The Old Courthouse Cafe - Delicious carrot cake and banana cake

A hidden, cute cafe, with two tables (2 and 4 seater). We needed wheelchair access and it was…read morereasonably ok (slight incline to get there and some paving where we had to reverse the wheelchair just before entering). A warm welcome, with a yummy choice of hot chocolates, cakes, cold drinks and ice creams. Service was quick and friendly. The carrot cake was moist and super sweet, but so moreish. Banana cake also hit the spot. Yum! I got the feeling that this place could be popular with parents and toddlers when the weather is warm as there was a play area and playground nearby. Off peak this is a lovely quiet spot to grab a cuppa and chat. Tip: By car, parking is available on Manor Close (easy to miss as it could be mistaken for a private driveway). Drive to the end and it opens into a car park with the cafe to the left.

They were just about to close when we came in for coffee & cake (sorry guys!) and they were very accommodating. No vegan cake that day, but they did have a gluten free option. I had some fancy kettle chips and checked out the very cute collection of art, knick knacks, lotions, candles etc from small-time craftspeople while the Mr perused the day's papers. If you're in the area and can't bear to sit in a chain coffee shop in The Spires, or if you're just having a walk through the pretty grounds, I would highly recommend having a sit down in here!

Having worked all week at the Ministry of Muffins, an angry muffin gets hungry on weekends…read more I used to frequent this place on weekend mornings in the hope of sustenance, casually strolling the open doors and to my horror... 9am (not an unreasonable time for breakfast) the venue is open and welcoming patrons, both human and muffin alike, alas, the kitchen is not open! This is a recurring issue. In my more leisurely days I chose to wait on the promise of a 20 minute cook time. As I sat there basking in the rather clinical ambience; I would people watch. The weekend patrons coming in for hangover cures and lunch time pack ups was dough-warming. Then my gaze would turn to the staff; a friendly bunch, and none tried to eat me so that's a good sign, yet they run around like headless chickens. One has to wonder if they do indeed work there or just stumbled in and got trapped, Venus-fly trap like. 40 minutes later and my food has not yet arrived... angry muffin becomes angrier. And hazaar! The bountiful breakfast is served. As I plunge my face into the plate with no regard for anyone within a 3 meter radius, I discover half of the food is stone cold and half sizzling hot. A huge disappointment especially after waiting what seems to be an age. So I devour the food and call my muffin mother in Estonia; I cannot hear her however because the high energy dance music is way too loud for a coffee shop (and weekend morning). Maybe these staff, maybe they are Friday night revellers who just haven't finished the party, I don't know, I have no brain; for I am a muffin.

After reading a few of the reviews on here, I felt I must have been on an odd day since my opinions…read moredo not parallel the rest. But the previous reviews are 2010-2013... SO, 2 YEARS LATER..... Wednesday afternoon I came here and making my way to a nearby hotel. I would have dined somewhere else if there were anywhere available nearby but decided to take a chance here. I wish I ventured somewhere else. The place was spacious and had lots of food to order. However, what is the point of space when practically no one is there to attend to you. The waitress or cashier, saw us for a few minutes, nobody bothered. We had to go to them and ask them for a menu and order. by this point i lost interest and decided to take away. While waiting, I decided to buy a 1.5LT Evian bottle (NOT THE LARGEST) . This woman looked at me and said one moment, I asked how much it was and she left me and took another lady talking in their dialect and looked at me. She said it was £3,20. I buy the very same thing for £1.90.... I paid it annoyed because it wasn't even cooled and i didnt see the reason of it being so pricey. Moving onto the food, we purchased and paid. We ate and the amount of dark sauce swimming around the "FRIED NOODLE" made us think we ordered noodle soup instead. I mean as we opened the Tupperware, the black sauce was oozing out and it seemed like it was more of noodle soup than black bean soup. I order Pork chop with rice. It arrived as RICE AT THE BOTTOM, GRAVY AND 2 MASHED WHATEVER. The only good food we order was the vegs spring rolls and squid balls. Barely edible. I hate low reviews but this one, it had to be done.

It reminds me a bit of a cafeteria, which is fine. Service is quick and meals are very reasonable. The menu is HUGE with a variety of Chinese, Thai and Malaysian cuisines. We got a few starters as well as mains, all of which were tasty. They do have beers and wine as well as non-alcoholic choices. Service it's spot on and friendly. The restaurant brings in a mixed crowd and there were a few people stopping by for take-away. And with two hour parking available at Homebase plus multiple buses nearby, it's an easy to access sorry if place. Along with the restaurant, there also exists a bakery, which was closed in the evening. Might have to check it out!
