Nice little spot in Newburyport. We stopped by for dinner last night and it wasn't too crowded. The lavender lemonade drink was refreshing. The Grog is a Newburyport staple well before self important restaurants have come and gone. It is good food and drink at a good price. Part of its charm is that not much has changed in decades. If you embrace that, you will love the Grog. We brought our twin boys when they were less than 1 year old for their first time out more than 25 years ago. For this visit, we were with our daughters and just wanted to stop in for some appetizers. The boneless chicken wings are made from scratch and were perfectly cooked with generous amounts of sauce, blue cheese, and ranch. The calamari was crisp and fresh. The seared Ahi tuna was as good as it gets in Newburyport, and it was served on top of seaweed salad with other vegetables on the plate. We've enjoyed muscles, the seafood, the bouilliabaise, the steak tips and so many other things on the menu. The floor-to-ceiling show pictures on the wall are always fun to look at. The bar is classic old New England. The booths are comfortable. The service is generally. There's even parking next-door for a limited number of cars. Rudest bartender I have ever encountered! We are two women in our 60's and this bartender couldn't have be less interested in serving us! No greeting ,Slapped some menus down, are you eating? He said.. we said no.. just some drinks.. asked my friend what do you want? Never asked me ! Made her drink and left me hanging.. oh I'll have one too! it was the end of the evening and clearly couldn't be bothered with me! Although what seemed to be his girlfriend was a few seats down! She got whatever she needed! We asked for another drink he said "I'm all done! " Excuse me? I didn't know what time they closed.. no conversation, just no even though other people were still being served and sitting and enjoying their meals . read more

My skepticism parted when I took that first bite. Let's be honest, this mainstay of Newburyport has seen better days - the tables and atmosphere are worn like an old shoe. However, this shoe still has some step. My fried cod sandwich was a surprise -- a fresh piece of fish with a good crunch on the batter. More seasoning would have helped me on the batter -- but overall a tasty bite. They even achieved the holy grail of thick cut fries crispy on the outside with a fluffy interior. Service was prompt and friendly, which would keep me coming back if I lived anywhere close. Worn is comfortable and satisfying -- and that's what I found here. read more

The vibe was great the bar stools where all taken on Monday afternoon, you could tell some are locals or regular. The service was great friendly and welcoming. Explains beer selection flavors. The food was good I did get the clam chowder said the best of 53 years I think, it was good but I might be A little spoiled living in RI seafood all my life. Pathetic bartender ...looking at every drop she poured of liquor which was next to nothing. Drink sucked. Saw the waitress once in a half hour. Food sucked. Chicken on cob salad was hard as a clam shell. Obviously frozen and old. Totally gone downhill from old days. read more

Big menu. Lots of options. Super friendly staff. Nice environment. Clean. Drinks were great. Margaritas and martinis and beer all great. Nachos toppings and cheese was too light Wings were well liked Careful with upcharges. We were asked if we wanted the guacamole with the nachos, that's extra $5, and do you want sauce with wings, yes bbq and honey mustard, each were $3. Meals, shrimp scampi, risotto, fisherman's plate all were well liked. One person in our party can't eat seafood and asked for the scampi with no shrimp but was charged full price. Had we known the person who could eat shrimp would have had the extra shrimp. The sweet potato burrito was not liked at all, it was mashed sweet potato in a large tortilla shell, no additional fillings. The server did kindly take that off. Deserts were good. Molten lava and brownie. Again, asked with or without the ice cream. Upcharge. Overall it's good pub food becaware of up charges. Typically I don't even notice. This bill was over $20 in upcharges. Just charge more for the food. Example. I'd rather pay a few dollars more for the wings and no charge for sauces. read more

Love Grog, old school not a hipster or prep in sight. No trendy furnishings, just books, wood and a great bar. We only ate the rhubarb pie a la mode made locally by Diane. It was a generous portion and was delicious. Plenty of beers to choose from - flight glasses or full pints. The service was friendly and helpful. read more

I love this place! It's cozy with a down home feel. The food selection is very varied and always delicious. Not every visit has been perfect but neither am I. Was underwhelmed and a bit put off the first time I came for oysters (no brine, not the restaurant the fluid in the oyster, they were dry) Decided to give this place another try and was pleasantly surprised. Prices are really good for the area and the food is generous in portion and flavorful. My friends steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned to the gods. The chicken breast meal I ordered filled me up and at 24$ is one of the best values you will find in the area. read more

Never checked back ask how our meals were; we had to chase her down for drinks; she seemed to have a slight chip on her shoulder. Feels like a great local spot in the 80s. Large, kind of old school menu (French onion soup, spinach artichoke dip, baked haddock) with some surprising options (warm potato and salmon salad). Since 1971, the Grog has been a go to place. We live in Maine now, but we still manage to make it for lunch December 24th most years.

Oh my lord! An old fashioned venue with today's best food! My sister got the sweet potato burrito & asked to add chicken. I got fish tacos with Spanish rice & the best black beans. This restaurant is definitely family friendly. Compared to other places in the area, the prices are low. The decor is very old timey saloon while still being very cabin New England. Less nautical than the restaurants around town as well. The fried pickles and really anything else that was fried was actually very good, my qualms are with the fish tacos. Our waitress was definitely stressed out, she actually told us that she was sorry (for not coming to our table for thirty minutes) and that the restaurant was understaffed. Maybe if I went on a chiller night (we went on a peak Friday) things would be a little cleaner. read more

We've been dining at the Grog for decades but in recent years the quality of the food didn't seem to be up to par. Last night, on a Monday when our favorite restaurant in the neighborhood ( Carmine's ) is closed we decided to go to the Grog because one of our party who had never been there is a huge fan of Hannah Selinger's memoir of working there as a server ("Cellar Rat"). We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food: even things we had eaten there not long ago seemed much improved. We ordered the fried pickles appetizer ( which I've had before and like well enough) and everybody loved them. The lobster Rangoon was also a hit although none of us was sure there was much lobster meat in it. All our entrees were good. I had the Ruben sandwich which was vastly improved since the last time we had been to the Grog ( within the past year ). I ended up being served three rounds of elderflower martini but simply couldn't drink even half of my third because I was so sloshed. One of my pet peeves at restaurants is when they don't keep the drinks flowing, but last night our server seemed very in tune with my needs. ( it probably helped that half of our party was not drinking alcohol so it was clear there were sober drivers among us but as it happens we were walking home anyway). I got a great first impression from this place upon walking in. We were greeted immediately by a friendly woman who sat us right away. I was more than impressed after seeing the menu; they have more options than I originally thought, especially for gluten free diets like myself. For starters, we got the crispy brussels sprouts and spinach and artichoke dip. The sprouts are crispy, salted perfectly, and the sauce with it is flavorful and not too spicy! No complaints. The dip is satisfying and the perfect amount. I decided on a soup and salad from filling up with appetizers. The chili is excellent, although I would've been happy with more cheese of course! Caesar salad is good, just a little bit over the top with the dressing. All in all, I will definitely be back to try other dishes! read more

Really glad I came here. The interior is a very cool pub decorated with old French posters and statues. The menu is varied so you got everything from burgers to Mexican to pasta to seafood. The interior is a very cool pub vibe. To start they have an excellent beer selection. For starters I had the lobster bisque. It was excellent. My wife had the haddock sandwich and that was Also very fresh and nice. But the hit of the night was a sweet potato burrito which sounded healthy to me so I ordered based on that. I was not expecting much. Turns out it was an excellent meal. This is huge burrito which I could not finish. It was filled with mashed sweet potato and black beans. The burrito was covered in excellent chilly verde sauce and cheese . Loved it so much I'm going to try and reproduce it at home. This place is just cool and pre COVID had live music on weekends. I have been to Newburyport many times and we finally decided to give the Grog a try. My wife had the fish and chips but did not really like the beer batter on the fish. The fish itself she said was very good. I have a burger with fries and a side of onion rings. The burger was perfectly cooked and was outstanding. The steak fries were nice and crispy and the rings were lightly breaded and truly some of the best I have ever had. Prices were very reasonable.
