    New England Clam chowder

Casual atmosphere friendly staff and decent food define this location. American pub classics a few twists and even a sushi bar next door are all part of this establishment. Food is good, the wine selection is average a good place to have a good time with a large group.

My review may be impacted by the fact I ate here right after a 20 mile race, but honestly it was totally deserving of the rating based on what I had, which was heavy on seafood/sushi. I would try more again if in area forsure. Crab Cake (really good) Wings (good) Black Cow Roll (great) Red Sox Roll (great)

Excellent low cost parking available on site, this location is on the Merrimack River front. Order was taken quickly, accurately we had the Nebbiolo Italian red wine very light Pinot noir type, the clam chowder was light on salt so that you can add at table if you so desire, half Caesar salad & large portion of Baked Haddock w spinach & garnised top very good tasting. We sat outside 2nd floor terrace. The weather was perfect 75 degrees w a light wind coming off the river. Recommended.

The food was fresh and pretty quick. The sitting area outside overlooks the marina which was beautiful. Our server Allyson was fantastic, prompt, and informative about the menu. We will be back!

Chose nonna's meatballs. Overall too much basil but still good with the dollop of homemade ricotta. My dining partner chose the lobster roll which was generous. Outdoor patio is exquisite. Great spot in Newburyport. Server was attentive to our needs. Ambiance stellar as it gave a great view of the downtown.

The Black Cow is a good restaurant, but there are better in Newburyport. We used to dine here more frequently when they were situated on the water, but tried them once after the move and was not impressed. We were back at a friends request and glad we tried it. We had pleasant service, delicious cocktails and the food arrived from the kitchen promptly and hot. The food itself was quite unremarkable however. Nothing bad, just OK. The meatball appetizer had tasty meatballs, but was served with a pesto sauce that I did not think paired well. It also came with focaccia, which was nice add, but it was cold, hard and well not great. I'm not a huge steak fan, but do love a good burger. Once again the burger was just OK. It had some interesting add ons, like cajun onions, but the bacon was a fail. Little chopped pieces of woefully underdone and barely cooked bacon pieces. It's like eating fat. No savory bacon flavor and rubbery texture. I just don't like bacon that is barely cooked. We tried the peanut butter/chocolate cake for dessert which was nice. Anything with peanut butter an chocolate is a win for me. Not sure it was made in house, but decent enough. Without the view, the food needs to excel, and that that does not seem to be in the case at least for me.

i don't know why the review rating is so low! the black cow is a new american restaurant (if you read my reviews you know not my favorite cuisine) but this is a good "crowd pleaser" spot. i was satisfied with the food i had and the cocktails i was able to try. it almost reminds me of a spot in my college town everyone took their parents to when they visited because everyone could find something on the menu they liked and leave with a happy opinion.

Espresso martini the size of my head!!

Came here for a girls night. I live in Colorado now but grew up here and remembered loving this place. We each ordered an espresso martini, delicious and huge!!! New England portions for ya. We ordered the crab appetizer it was very good and again huge portion. A comfort food for sure. Then we shared a burger, also great. We both left satisfied!

    Short Rib Bolognese

The people who work here know what they're doing. It was very crowded but we put our number down, chilled outside across the street and got a call about 15-20 minutes later. We were taken to the outdoor patio on the second floor and it was a bit sunny to not have the patio umbrellas open but it's alright if you have sunglasses. The servers and hosts were great and the food was absolutely spectacular. I got the short rib bolognese. Besides a few fatty pieces that were inedible, the short rib was perfectly tender and went so well with the fresh pappardelle and Bolognese. I usually don't like meat with pasta or short rib on top of dishes like short rib mac and cheese or grilled cheese, but this was an exceptional preparation and went so well with the dish. We also got a really good chocolate cake to finish out the meal and it was beautifully fudgy. I can't wait to come back here again and see what else they have to offer.

I love(d) this place but after 25 minutes of sitting, we have menus but no water or service to speak of.

    Veal Milanese
    Dan S.

Excellent beer selection but quite expensive. They typically have about 40 on tap. I paid $12 for an 11 oz pour of Hill Farmstead Edward. It was damn good though. The sushi is good, not great. But is was ridiculously overpriced, average is about $25. The 2 rolls in my attached pic were $50. The Veal Milanese was like rubber. It was so tough that I needed a steak knife to saw through it. It was loaded with chopped garlic that wasn't sufficiently cooked so it was bitter and unpleasant. A $30 waste. The tall blonde hostess was the most unpleasant person I've met in quite a while. We almost u-turned out of there after dealiywith her attitude. The rest of the staff was pleasant. 2 rolls, one pasta entree, and one 11oz beer was over $100.

We came to Newburyport for a day trip and needed a meal before we headed for the commuter. The wait was an hour but luckily they have enough seats for 4 at a bar area upstairs. The space itself is really big with an upper outdoor area with a bar that spans from the inside and out as well as the downstairs dining area which looked mainly inside. Our server who also seemed like one of the heads of the bar area was really nice! I could tell they were really busy and he was running all over the place but every interaction I had with him was very sincere and enjoyable. I ordered the rock and roll sushi which was so yummy! I kind of wish I have ordered more rolls but I was kind of in a rush because my train was leaving soon. I also ordered three of the daily oysters and unfortunately it took so long for some reason for them to bring out but the gentleman kept apologizing about it. We were about the leave and I was closing out the check and it came out lol.

Awful bar service. Don't recommend. Prices are ridiculous too. Better places to go in Newburyport.

** Burger and Donut Review **…read more Outstanding space with a rustic modern look, a 4-sided bar, balanced seating (booths, tables, high-tops), an outdoor patio, and a private room. My wife and I had the pleasure of sitting in seats more akin to living room furniture-- that's a good thing. Also good was the breeze that blew in from the deck on a hot day. -- Blackened Cod Sandwich: This was my wife's lunch and it looked very good, with a brioche bun, and no shortage of condiments. Most importantly, the tall portion of fish was very moist and very well seasoned. My small taste didn't have the classic "blackened" vibe, but it was very good. A mini basket of fries provided plenty. Probably frozen, but good quality and a good balance between crisp and droopy. -- Dry Aged Burger: As a burger aficionado, that's what I came for, and a dry aged one-- a rarity around Boston, sadly-- gets my attention immediately. This one, ordered medium rare, brought a decent crust and decent moistness inside, though both could be more pronounced. It was probably closer to medium than medium rare, and the brioche bun was a white bready under the dome, but it worked. The dry aged flavor came through immediately. Good supporting cast among the sauces and vegetation, and same fry basket treatment as on my wife's plate. Overall, good instead of the hoped-for great. -- Donuts: We came at brunch, so this was a nice option for us to treat as a dessert. My opening came when I saw another server walk by with a plate and I asked her upon returning, "What was that plate of meatball-looking things?" She said those were the apple cider donut bites, and proceeded to gush that they were her favorite thing on the menu and a don't-miss item. This prevented me from having to twist my wife's arm, so it was a done deal. The "bites" were fairly large, closer to baseball size than golfball size, with a nice thick outer crunch yielding to a very warm, still-moist-but-fully-cooked interior. Delicious cinnamon flavor on the outside, natural donut dough flavor inside, and kicked up by a thin, cinnamon-maple sauce underneath and a whipped cream (they called it and vanilla anglaise) on the sides. Fantastic, and in an era when "artisan" donuts run $5 apiece even out of a fridge, getting six warm ones of higher quality for $12 was a steal. The burger was closer to good than great, but overall a good meal, good service, great space, and surprisingly good value (on all three items). I'd be interested to try them for dinner.

Entering I was greeted by the friendly owner who was also tending the bar. From what I saw upon entering the bar is very clean and neat. It may be because now is considered off-season, it was busy but low key & people who were there were obviously enjoying it. I decided on a table & within minutes my friends showed up. The bar does not serve food. So I stopped and got 2 pizzas for us all to share. We ordered drinks & walked up to the bar to pay. We were prepared knowing beforehand that they only take cash...so no issues with that. I did not order an alcoholic beverage... Others did & liked them very much. It seems like they are priced . moderately. My drink was a diet coke in a tall glass.. just right. So it became time to play and the nice DJ came over to explain the game and pass out cards and markers. One of my group won the first round! They brought her over a bag loaded with swag .. I don't know about you, but winning is exciting & gives an adrenaline pump - usually no matter what the prize is. So on came the 2nd round & a winner from the other side of the venue. The next and last round ended up being a coverall! We thought .. no one will win this one. She played 50 song bits & no one was winning. So she cheered us on and asked if we wanted 5 more. Otherwise without a winner the pot grows. So we said yes! And low & behold... I ended up winning! I won __ in cash!!! It was decided between us that we will definitely return : - )
