I trained at this school for nearly two years and while starting out things seemed fine my…read moreexperience became more and more negative. One of the first "red flags" if you will was the lack of personal attention from instructors. Being a smaller woman, ~125 lbs, there were moves that I wouldn't understand, would have difficulty doing, or needed some extra assistance just in general to be frank. There is a higher-ranking woman at the gym, but I always felt as though I was given the cold-shoulder while other women were treated with a more amicable attitude. Next, during a class we were doing a king of the hill style drill with wrestling takedowns. (Side note I wrestled in high school and was well versed in the drill we were doing) Next thing you know I'm on my back, broken nose, and concussed with the male responsible not only not saying sorry but also annoyed that I was crying. The only person who said anything was my now husband, who they ended up kicking out citing this situation as one of the reasons. I ended up having to stop training for at least a week and when I got back nothing was said about my concussion/ broken nose. The male responsible continues to train there to this day and to my knowledge was never reprimanded for his actions. The final red flag was someone who was one of my main training partners when I started there because of his similarity in size. I began helping out with kids class around a couple months after I started and he began helping out a few months after that. Neither of us taught the class we were both just assistants. During a class, while the kids were doing a drill, I mentioned to him "Hey, maybe if you held them a bit higher they wouldn't hit their elbow." He proceeded to smile, tell me he knew what he was doing, and to not correct him again. After the kids were done and everyone was allowed to get water, he physically stopped me from getting off the mat and told me to apologize. Shocked I kind of laughed and asked "What?" He then told me to apologize and told me to never question him again and that he knew what he was doing. Stepping in front of me each time I tried to step around him. (Mind you that no one helping out has any authority over the other and we are all just assisting the instructor with the kids). I was unnerved by this situation but chose not to mention it because I assumed he was having a bad day... To my dismay I continue to hear his words "a lower belt shouldn't question his authority" from men and women that I've never met. When mentioning this to the owners of the gym nothing was done. I've since been banned, the reason being "tension" and the fact that this male is allowed to now teach the kids, and some adult classes. I would not recommend this gym, not for women, not for anyone with PTSD who might suffer from triggers in physical situations (because one of the owners will brush you aside and tell others that "it's fine [she] just cries"), not for anyone who is on the smaller scale. I hoped for so much more from a gym I heard highly about and instead received a broken nose, concussion, slander, and belittlement. If you choose to train there, good luck.

I dropped into Caio Terra, for the fundamentals class. Charles Hiersche was teaching the class. I was treated very well and welcomed into the class. The instruction was informed and explained for all levels, and the guidance superb. The fundamentals class was attended by all levels of belts, which was refreshing. The class ended in a series of 3 minute rounds (semi competitive rolls), that took my body from feeling good about coming back to feeling like I needed this more than I knew I needed it! I was a little disappointed that they don't sell branded gis (the BJJ kimono with a Caio Terra brand sewn on). In fact the don't sell anything except classes and TShirts. Well, no problem. Charles explained that he focused on the TRAINING, which is fine by me! Amazon sells gis, and Charles also teaches No Gi classes (shirt and shorts without the gi). This fundamentals class did not start with warmups in basic movements (unless that happens at another time). Shrimping, forward/backward rolls, bridge, etc are typically the first 10 minutes or so of any class. However, diving right into the material, and leaving time for more rolls at the end was better for me personally. I feel confident that a beginner would be walked through the basics, and have no problem catching up. In summary, I believe that this small school was really worth my time investigating it, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Brazilian Jujitsu is probably their most popular offering, but I spent the last year learning Muay Thai here and although I am not currently attending classes here, the experience was life changing! The Brazilian Academy has a very in depth Gi Jiu Jitsu program that has become invaluable to me as I develop in the sport. In the KC area, there are two places that I would recommend for BJJ training. I can't pick which one I like best, so I switch between them in rotation! If you are looking for solid BJJ training, then go here. My only complaint is that they do not advertise their programs and schedules well enough to promote everything that they teach! I would have found this place sooner if they did. Why BJJ? I am glad you asked, because now I get to ramble into how it has changed my life, and how I stumbled onto the Brazilian Academy. I got into BJJ two years ago because I stopped kickboxing and gained a ton of weight. I needed something I could do in my passion for martial arts that wouldn't give me CTE. I remembered how much hard work it was to earn a green belt in Judo back in the 1980s, so I found a school where I was working at the time that taught BJJ. I found that I had been missing this in my life! I was foolish to avoid the ground game until my 50s, but I chalk that up to the brainwashing of "stand and fight like a man" that old school Karate fighters pushed at you before the rise of UFC. I lost 75 pounds in the first year, and many of the "old guy" aches and pains have gone away. My flexibility is slowing returning, and every aspect of my life from chasing my grand kids around tunnels and trampolines to running through airports to catch a flight to hiking trails at altitude in Colorado has gotten easier and better! Since I started, I have been to 10 or 11 different BJJ schools around the country. I choose BJJ schools that also have a boxing program (for fitness and fun), but shy away from contact fighting. I collect knowledge, branded Gis (uniforms), and will likely never be promoted because I move jobs and change schools just before I might earn it. I continue to travel, and will continue to find a school in the next city I visit. However, when I am at home in the KC area, I want to train as hard as possible. I need a place with Boxing and BJJ, of course, and I found one that pushed the old school tenants that I am used to. Life was beautiful, util I ended up getting a serious illness that put me down for a while. To get back up, I looked for a fundamentals class that would be a little easier on my old body and new inhaler. I tried a few other places in town, and that is when I came across the Brazilian Academy. The class schedule is awesome with two morning BJJ classes starting at 6am, and 2 evening classes every day except Friday. I started with the morning class, because it was very small, and thus easier for me to recover. Since then, I take both morning and evening classes, then drive to the other school for their evening class. I seriously don't like either one better than the other, but the Brazilian Academy is the only one with a 6am and 7am class. I think training here is going to be an essential part of my competitive game (if an old rusty fellow like me can be competitive). I'd be in complete heaven if both the schools I love decided to move in next to each other... and further south closer to my house...

Watching her train as a color belt with all of the instructors was amazing and now watching her compete all over the country as a 3rd Degree Black Belt is so much fun. It is great to see the instructors work with individual students to develop their abilities and bring out the best in everyone. It's a credit to the instructors to see how parents and students support each other.
