Having moved from CA and not knowing anything about Overland Park, all I knew was I wanted to get…read moreback into shape. So I looked up the closest gym with the best schedule for me. I started at E3 August 2022 with the intent to just do personal strength training for the accountability. But out of pure curiosity about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), I signed up for an athletes challenge that included both strength training and once a week private BJJ lessons. The athletes challenge got me down over 15 pounds which I have kept off to this day. More importantly I gained more confidence and a sense of control over my body again. It surprised me how much I began enjoying the challenges of jiu jitsu and decided at the start of 2023 to commit to coming almost everyday to do both gi and Nogi classes. (Both those terms, amongst many others will start making sense when you start training). I started with the small group essentials BJJ foundation class, which helped build my confidence to do the regular classes. My concerns with starting a very physical sport in my 30s and coming from no previous martial arts experience quickly went away after adjusting over the course of a couple weeks. Everyone here at E3, from the techniques learned from my coaches to those I had the opportunity to roll with, all prepared me to compete in my first BJJ competition in May this year. The opportunity to train with top athletes from Brazil, to meet and grow with other members of the gym, and to really be part of a community that empowers individuals to feel more in tune with their body - I feel fortunate to have come across this gym. With the support of everyone at E3, you get a chance to see what you can be capable of. I truly cannot recommend it enough for anyone to try BJJ, especially with everyone here. I think the change you will see in yourself both physically and mentally will speak for itself. See you on the mats!

I highly recommend E3 to anyone interested in giving Jiu Jitsu a try -- incredibly welcoming and…read morecompetent instructors and a great place to build confidence and get a great workout in!

The place is legit. If you train here, you will come away with skills and knowledge that you can use for matches, tournaments, or just to wrestle your kids away from the TV remote. In my quest to continue to improve my own health, I needed a place where I could continue to regain my knowledge in boxing and to increase my knowledge of Jiu Jitsu. I wanted a single roof to work out with back to back classes, and looked all over before finding this place almost by accident. It's a bit of a drive for me, but well worth it on the weeks that I am not traveling out of state. I train in a similar place in New York and before that in Chapel Hill, NC. Before I found Chute Boxe, I simply didn't know of any good cross discipline places to train in the KC area. Chute Boxe is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but it is not your typical Gracie academy. You can do some research into the history of the two. In the short time that I have been training in Jiu Jitsu, I have had the pleasure of training in several different formats. These Chute Boxe classes focus on technique that seriously improves my understanding of what to do when I'm stuck. Each class also goes right into rolling, which is where you will kill those carbs and hopefully solidify your knowledge. The fitness and the technical boxing classes are done with bags. I have not seen any sparing yet, but that is perfectly fine with me. My arms are past dead after every class, which is my goal. I don't want to have gas in the tank when I leave! The kids classes look both fun and like serious work. I have a two year old that will fit that energy nicely, and I can't wait until she is ready to hit the mat! There are fundamentals classes and also Muay Thai classes, but I have not taken those. I assume they are as high quality as the classes later in the evening. I have so far to go before I am in any kind of good shape, and the 2 and a half hours I spend here is exactly what I need to completely remind me of just how far that really is!

Good work outs and a friendly atmosphere. Muay Thai classes come in two flavors: fitness which is…read moremainly bag work and technical which is pads and all the other good stuff. You can do both with the Muay Thai membership. I like that I can pick if I feel like working on technique or just hitting the bags for an hour. Either way you'll get a intense workout. Trainers are great!

I trained at this school for nearly two years and while starting out things seemed fine my…read moreexperience became more and more negative. One of the first "red flags" if you will was the lack of personal attention from instructors. Being a smaller woman, ~125 lbs, there were moves that I wouldn't understand, would have difficulty doing, or needed some extra assistance just in general to be frank. There is a higher-ranking woman at the gym, but I always felt as though I was given the cold-shoulder while other women were treated with a more amicable attitude. Next, during a class we were doing a king of the hill style drill with wrestling takedowns. (Side note I wrestled in high school and was well versed in the drill we were doing) Next thing you know I'm on my back, broken nose, and concussed with the male responsible not only not saying sorry but also annoyed that I was crying. The only person who said anything was my now husband, who they ended up kicking out citing this situation as one of the reasons. I ended up having to stop training for at least a week and when I got back nothing was said about my concussion/ broken nose. The male responsible continues to train there to this day and to my knowledge was never reprimanded for his actions. The final red flag was someone who was one of my main training partners when I started there because of his similarity in size. I began helping out with kids class around a couple months after I started and he began helping out a few months after that. Neither of us taught the class we were both just assistants. During a class, while the kids were doing a drill, I mentioned to him "Hey, maybe if you held them a bit higher they wouldn't hit their elbow." He proceeded to smile, tell me he knew what he was doing, and to not correct him again. After the kids were done and everyone was allowed to get water, he physically stopped me from getting off the mat and told me to apologize. Shocked I kind of laughed and asked "What?" He then told me to apologize and told me to never question him again and that he knew what he was doing. Stepping in front of me each time I tried to step around him. (Mind you that no one helping out has any authority over the other and we are all just assisting the instructor with the kids). I was unnerved by this situation but chose not to mention it because I assumed he was having a bad day... To my dismay I continue to hear his words "a lower belt shouldn't question his authority" from men and women that I've never met. When mentioning this to the owners of the gym nothing was done. I've since been banned, the reason being "tension" and the fact that this male is allowed to now teach the kids, and some adult classes. I would not recommend this gym, not for women, not for anyone with PTSD who might suffer from triggers in physical situations (because one of the owners will brush you aside and tell others that "it's fine [she] just cries"), not for anyone who is on the smaller scale. I hoped for so much more from a gym I heard highly about and instead received a broken nose, concussion, slander, and belittlement. If you choose to train there, good luck.
