I've loved this bar for years. The bouncers are great as long as you don't cause any issues. There is a faint aroma of vomit but it is a college bar so that is a bit expected. Bartenders are great, especially Josh and Vinni. Food is pretty good, they have a great deal on tacos on Tuesdays and their Wing Wednesdays are worth a trip down. Not a high class establishment. I was waiting on my wife and got bored and walked around 5 points (I know not safe) but anyway. I went into group Therapy to have a beer. I was looking around realizing I haven't been here in 38 years. They even still have the Moose head. The bartender I believe her name was Crystal was very friendly and was showing me the changes. This place has great atmosphere and good tunes. I am here on parents weekend for the University of South Carolina. There is barely standing room only and as a dad I feel every bit my age. The biggest drawback is they only have one bartender at each bar. Complete Idiocy. After getting my first drink and coming back for a second I waited 45 minutes and did not get a service standing at the bar and left. Piss poor management as they could be making a ton of money. Other than that the kids have fun. I'm sure the place is great when is not so busy, but it's hard to believe that anyone is in capable of thinking ahead. Group Therapy is a monthly go-to! Keep in mind this is a bar, in a college town, meaning the main clientele they appeal to are going to be of a younger and more diverse crowd than your traditional bars in Columbia, SC. The bar is more of a "hole in the wall" but the drinks are decent and they are cheap! Honestly, none of the Five Points bars are that elaborate. Depending on when you visit Group Therapy, you can get house liquor for $2. Usually if you are looking for an upbeat bar that appeals to all people then this may be the place for you. This is one of the few Five Points bars that gives you a club feel, without having to pay a cover like some other bars. If you want your experience to have more of a club feel, I highly suggest visiting on a Saturday night when they are the busiest. If you are going strictly for the bar or food any day of the week works. (Five Points drink specials usually are Wednesday-Friday) This bar also has an outside patio set up that makes it unique. If you don't enjoy smoke smells then you may want to stay inside. The food here is definitely one of the hidden gems of this bar. This bar offers a decent menu with very reasonable prices. I enjoy their wings the most! One of my favorite things about this bar is the special they run on Wednesdays where you can purchase 14 wings for $7 versus their normal 7 wings for $7. The wings are à la carte but you can add on a side of fries or whatever you like for very little. With the Wednesday special, you can get a double order of wings and fries all for $10! You can't beat that! I HIGHLY recommend the Hennessy flavored wings, you wont regret! **Keep in mind this business is a bar, not a restaurant, meaning you will have to show I.D. to enter. Went last night with a girlfriend of mine I had one 8$ drink and tipped the bartender 5$. I look at my bank account this morning to find I was charged 25$ on my debit card instead of 13$. I look online at the reviews and what do it see? That they've had a problem in the past with people being charged the incorrect amount. Theres really no excuse for this it was a very slow night, there was maybe 10 people in there total at the time that I left. Your not stuck with just one DJ the whole night Richard brings people from all over to spin with him. Let's not forget my cutie patootie bartender. Love this bar! I totally miss this place that I used to go when I was at school. Love the bartenders. Love the atmosphere. Highlight: DJs on Saturday night if they're still doing this. SO MUCH FUN! Also, the fact that they have smoking in the back patio area is appealing. The fact that they started delivering food toward the end of my college years was a leading factor of my weight gain!!! If you love to smoke cigarettes and love the smell of them, then this bar might be for you. I, on the other hand couldn't stand being in here for more than 5 seconds. The stench was so horrendous, I just couldn't breathe. The main reason for this is that they have an outdoor area and all of the cigarette smoke flows into the inside of the bar, and anyone that goes outside reeks of cigarettes and brings the smell inside too. I'm pretty sure I saw about 20 people smoking at once, it was a lot. I wouldn't mind this bar that much if they didn't allow smoking, because they usually have a dj and he usually puts on a mini light show which puts them apart from other bars in Columbia, but this bar just isn't for me. Group Therapy - it is a Columbia institution. This place stays open late - i have stumbled out of there around 4am! They have an outdoor "patio" area in back and usually spin some good tunes there. This is a college bar so it is not pristine but it is a lot of fun and you will find all your friends here at some point! read more

I don't know if I got here on a bad night or what, but based off everyones fantastic reviews of this place I think I'll have to give it a second try. We got here real early on in the night probably around 9 or so and this place was DEAD. I went up to order three bottles of beer and the bartender asked me to tell her how much the total was, then almost forgot to give me change because as she put it 'it's hard to do math when you're so drunk you can barely breath'. I got it, you are tending bar and you'll have a drink, no problem...but I shouldn't have to worry about losing about 20$ because you can't control yourself enough to do basic subtraction. The guy next to me ended up having his tab totally screwed up as well. Overall, not a great experience, and I'll have to try again sometime. read more

This is an excellent club if you're into a certain type of music. From what I was told It's divided into "two" sections, one is hip hop and the other is Electronic/house music... I went there with a friend specifically because of the music. The live Dj was a plus, the music was like a drug and I want more.lol the Dj really knew what he was doing and the atmosphere wasn't bad either, most of everyone was there to have a good time and no issues arose. The bar was nice too, the two girls working were nice enough and kept my tab going because once the music hits you, you get thirsty.. but this section is outside with an over hang type deal so its not mixed into the hip hop section at all and its over a good spot to lose yourself in electro/ house or chat at the bar with friends. read more

I was a regular at Group throughout the mid-80's, during it's heyday. The line to get in often wrapped around the corner and into the alley. The music included all the cool things you never got to hear on the radio back then...lots of David Bowie, The Ramones, Robert Gordon, Grateful Dead, etc. In fact, I got to meet Joey Ramone (nice guy, mellow, very tall) in Group Therapy one night. He was signing beer bottle lables, dollar bills...anything people gave him to sign. George owned the business back then. I went away into the military, and worked overseas for a while. When I went back to Group years later, it was a totally different place. I heard that some of the former bartenders broke away to form Pavlov's, and used to see some of them from time to time, but that's for a different review. I understand George sold Group several years ago. To me, Group Therapy always had a slight whiff of vomit and disinfectant in the air, reddish brown walls with graffitti scratched into them, a concrete floor and the dusty old artifacts hanging behind the bar...and it still does, but everything else has changed. The moosehead is long gone. Many of the old black and white photos of past patrons and regulars have been replaced with new ones. On the few nights I've been during the past couple of years, the music is mainly hip-hop, rap and latino...even when the crowd is 98% caucasian. Group Therapy used to offer only beer...now they serve food and mixed drinks. They have a nice little bar outside under the stars in what used to be the alleyway...sometimes they have a band on the small stage back there. Not nearly as hip as it once was. Group Therapy is actually kind of common now. I would give it two stars, but I'm throwing in a third star for nostalgia's sake, as a tribute to what Group Therapy used to be. read more

The crowd is decent, but I've only been 2 times. I could've just been on subpar nights, but the bartender was awesome when I went this week. He was extremely attentive, lively, and made sure my girlfriends and I had a great night especially since it was my friend's birthday. Keep up the good spirits. You've got to order the nerds drink!
