I just moved into the neighborhood from out of state and went to the address on 17th St. NW. The office was closed and an handwritten sign on the door said : "due to unforeseen circumstances we are closed until tomorrow". It's been a week. Still not opened. I called main number to inquire and was asked if I was interested in leasing the property! This didn't sound like the pharmacy would be opening. In the corporate-centric world of DC it can get quite frustrating to determine which CVS on opposite sides of the same street corner is best. And worse yet, the times you really need to go to a pharmacy are often times when you just feel like crap. Standing in a narrow aisled store, packed with people and products, waiting for your prescription to get filled is beyond frustrating. I can assure you that every person in this town who has ever needed to get a prescription filled has their own horror story of going to a chain pharmacy. If nothing else, the lack of smile or attention from the person providing you with happy pills is very much visible. A couple of weeks ago when I came down with a nasty strep throat infection, I decided to try something new, try something different. I had been admiring the Grubb's Pharmacy on 17th street for a few months, and it always looked like such a warm and welcoming place, so I figured, why not, can't be any worse than the big red-signed place a block down. My first step in the door made me a customer for life. It's not covered in stained-up industrial carpeting, or so claustrophobicly organized that finding what you need is a difficult task. You walk in the door, see nice wood floors, simple shelves with basic medical needs, and a friendly pharmacist smiling behind the counter. A smile cannot be underrated. And Grubb's gets that. A pharmacy is a place where customers expect some interaction from the employees. When you (or your insurance company) are paying big bucks for pills that could have big impacts on your body if you take them the wrong way, having a caring, understanding and friendly staff member assisting you should be the norm. So I went to the counter, handed over my prescription as I'm sniffling and hacking, and sit down to wait. As I sit on the nice, bright bench, I took a look around at the other products they have. Specialty health and beauty (think Burts Bees and the like). While they don't have every pharmacy item you ever need, they definitely cover the bases with over the counters too. This Grubbs is heavily focused on infectious disease treatment and caters to patients with HIV/AIDS, but is a 100% fully stocked pharmacy for everything else too. After waiting a short 10 minutes, My prescription was ready at the counter and I went on with my sniffly day. Why the heck would I ever go back to a chain pharmacy that takes forever, is always too bothered to give me the time of the day when I could go to a nice, neighborhood establishment? I think the answer is simple and I think you should check out Grubbs if you are anywhere in the area, you definitely won't be let down. read more

Once or twice my guy waited until the last minute to reorder vital meds and they always ensured he didnt miss a dose. When we first started there a few years ago, I almost got mad at them because they refused to fill a particular Rx before they talked to the doctor. LOVE THIS PLACE. I came here out of desperation from dealing with CVS. It was not a bad one but I just got fed up of their service. Here I can call in and have my medications delivered to my home. There is a young gentleman called Jamal ( I think thats how you spell it) and he is just my favorite person right now. Super helpful. After a few times they will know you and the staff are just amazing, polite, professional and honestly even though that may seem like the basics, it makes a world of difference when the last thing you want to deal with is filling in prescriptions in life! I urgently needed a prescription filled today and Grubb's had the item in stock (they said they carry a couple for just these kinds of cases) and then they sold it to me even though my insurance didn't quite cover their cost and they would take a small loss. So kind! I needed to start on the meds asap today. Another time I picked something up and they had included a form in my bag I could fill in for a rebate, all without my asking. As the service was starting to deteriorate at the CarePlus/CVS Specialty Pharmacy--it's now fully deteriorated, it seems--I turned to Grubb's, which had just opened two or three blocks down 17th Street from CarePlus. I need a specialty pharmacy because of the several medical problems that I'm treating simultaneously, such as having had a liver transplant, having diabetes and CKD, secondary to the transplant, and so on. I am quite pleased--sometimes even thrilled, to be more exact--with the service I receive at Grubb's. Every single member of the team, from the pharmacists to the people at the front of the store, working the register, is courteous and intelligent. Indeed, I'm struck every time I got there by how dedicated everyone there seems to the patients who come with their prescriptions. I hope it goes on as it is for a long time. read more

Great Pharmacy!!! Great customer service! I had to pick up a prescription that was not available at other pharmacies and Grubb's had it in stocked and I only had to wait minutes to get it filled. If I lived closer I would absolutely continue to go here but I know where to go for certain medication. read more

I'd love to never go to any other pharmacy again. I started visiting Grubb's for prescriptions a few years ago when I had called all over DC asking whether or not a pharmacy could fill a script. Grubb's came through, and I've been a loyal patron ever since. The customer service is excellent, I never have to wait behind more than one person, they always have the medicine I need, and they'll fill it for you while you wait or walk down the block for a coffee. But the best of all is being able to support a local business. read more

I give them one star because they offer delivery. Too bad they rarely deliver when promised OR deliver the correct medication. Six months in a row I was delivered the wrong generic and had to go 4-5+ days without required daily medication while trying to get them to resissue the right one. For more than 10 years I have patronized Grubbs because I believe it's important to support local businesses. Today, after waiting 6 days to get a refill delivered (again, of a required daily medication) and over 7 calls to the pharmacy just today, I'm done. If you need an occasional script and don't depend on regularly daily meds, and plan to drop off and pick up your medications, I'm sure you'll do fine with Grubbs. Just don't believe anything they tell you about when things will be ready--let alone delivered. read more

I really wanted to like Grubbs because it was small and local, the people who work there are friendly, and the space is really nice. But their record-keeping/precision is just not what it needs to be. I tried using them for almost a year before, after two big fails, I gave up and went back to CVS. The two big fails were losing my prescription right before I left to go on an international trip (after Frantic Search #4, they found it in some weird box where they aren't supposed to keep scrips), and giving my doctor and me conflicting information on whether the insurance authorization had expired on one of my medications, which dragged out me being able to get a needed refill on said medication. I thought that by switching to a smaller, non-chain-y pharmacy I'd get more personal attention, but Grubbs was literally like my aunt in that they constantly could not remember where they had put things. read more

They followed up with a phone call shortly after I left, when they managed to get my insurance to cover my script, which had initially looked like it would take several days, which was obviously much appreciated. read more

I have used this pharmacy for several years and the service is inconsistent. They've been both incredibly helpful and monumentally frustrating. As I lay here in pain, I must say I am more pissed than I've been in a long time. This is the second time that they have neglected to deliver my prescription when it was scheduled. This time, it's pain medicine. I have been sitting by the door for HOURS awaiting what was supposed to be a 6 pm delivery. Now it's 10, the pharmacy is closed, and I'm out of luck. We won't even mention the $130 I prepaid them for my meds. Please believe that they will get an earful tomorrow. I hope this never happens again to anyone! I wanted to like this place and support a small, locally owned business, however after about a year, I can no longer use this pharmacy. About a year ago, my insurance stopped working with CVS, and Grubbs NW was the most convenient pharmacy for me to switch to. In the past year, the number of issues and challenges I have faced with them as been astonishing. Every time my doctor faxes or calls in a script, they tell me they haven't received it, resulting in my doctor having to resend it up to 3 times. When she sends a script to any other pharmacy, no issue. Grubbs is also incredibly inconsistent with auto refill and whether or not they do it. I have 2 monthly scripts that I asked to be put on auto refill so I would not have to call every month to ask for it to be refilled. They said this was not a problem at all. Without fail, every single month there has been an issue with either one or both of the scripts not being filled. At various times I have been told they can't do auto refill so I shouldn't expect it to be filled. This in and of itself is ridiculous since every other pharmacy I have ever used has an auto refill option, plus I have also been told by the same staff at different times that they do auto refill. They are also incredibly inconsistent in calling to say when prescriptions are ready, so it is always on me, the customer, to follow up with them, often multiple times to find out if and when I can get my script. There have also been numerous times they have been out of common drugs. For instance, after a minor surgery, they told me it would be 48 hours before they would be able to fill a script of 10 Vicodin. I asked if that was common and they said yes. I had that script filled by Wallgreens, who told me that any pharmacy that is at all good at keeping inventory should have such a small amount of such a common drug on hand. There have been countless other issues, but that more or less sums it up. This pharmacy is inconsistent and unreliable in almost every way that a pharmacy can be. I makes me sad to write this review because I do want to support local businesses, but I cannot continue to use them with such bad service. read more

Emily gets 5 stars. I needed an intramuscular injection of a medications exactly 36 hours prior to my scheduled surgery. Unfortunately that meant that I needed at 2:15 AM injection. Emily delivered the medicine to my house on time and gave me my injection exactly at 2:15 AM. She was professional, organized, punctual, and competent. She knew exactly how to prepare the dose. She told me exactly what to expect. It wasn't painful and I don't have any bruising. I was not happy when my doctor told me a stranger was going to come to my house at 2AM and inject me in my butt cheek. But Emily made the best out of my bad situation. She was in and out in 5 minutes and I went right back to sleep after. Someone needs to give this woman a raise. read more

It seems weird to be so excited about a pharmacy but this place really is the best! No more waiting for drugs that are out of stock or getting attitude for trying to fill painkillers (thanks CVS). I recently stopped in to fill my Methotrexate and this is my first time taking it after a decade and the pharmacist was kind enough to give me a detailed demonstration on where to inject and how to inject. Each interaction I've had with a staff member there has been beyond kind and helpful. They're able to fill compounding prescriptions which is also really useful. Their hours are less convenient than CVS, but that's really the only downside. Highly recommend! read more

Almost every other time I go to this pharmacy there is some mix up with my prescriptions. Whether they forgot to call the doctor for a refill, or forgot to get it processed through insurance, or some thing else. I call in my prescriptions 2-3 days ahead of time, I call on the day I'm going to pick up, and still when I arrive there is always a problem. I really wish they would get their act together because I do want to support local pharmacies but at this rate CVS and RiteAid are looking much better. read more
