I called several contractors needing my roof replaced on short notice due to a series of bad roof leaks on an very old flat roof system and was in a rush to get the project started with the Spring rain well on its way. Shawn Whalen himself CAME TO MY HOME THE VERY NEXT MORNING after we spoke on the phone to evaluate my roof. While I had to chase other contractors down for their bids, he sent me his bid in a timely manner. Not only that, HIS BID WAS COMPETITIVE with the other 2 estimates I obtained and more importantly, HE AGREED TO PUSH BACK OTHER JOBS to accommodate our roof project... it was an emergency since our roof was actively leaking! We had to wait a week or so for the weather to warm up to start the project due to the manufacturers recommendation. Shawn really listened, because he knew my wife and I were very worried about the leaks and we had bad weather coming. So two days later he came out with one of his guys and patched our roof. That day after the patch job, we had a big rainstorm and were able to sleep through the night. It was the first time we hadn't worried about our home getting additional water damage in several weeks. We were really nervous leading up to the project because firstly, it's such a big financial commitment, and second, we didn't want to have to deal with any roof issues going forward for a really long time. The days leading up to the install, I was frequently texting Shawn with questions as well as requests for colors and materials I preferred for the re-roof. HE WAS ALWAYS QUICK TO GET BACK TO ME with answers and to confirm the changes to my order and NEVER GAVE THE IMPRESSION I WAS BOTHERING HIM. When the project got delayed a couple days due to the weather, Chuck from his office kept me updated. Big shoutout to Chuck! His project manager got sick the first day of the install so Shawn showed up to make sure everything got started without any problems. HIS CREW WAS WELL STAFFED, EFFICIENT, AND FINISHED THE JOB IN 2 DAYS. They came back on the 3rd day to do a quality check without me asking. They put in a new French drain system and properly sealed the entire basement, creating additional living space for our teen girls.They replaced all the uneven floors and made the entire home not only much more functional- but breathtakingly gorgeous. The problem is then the left the house unfinished, never completing it. Six months later- their electrical work caused a house fire. We hired this man on Time and Material and boy was that a mistake! He was hired to remodel a…read morefinished basement with some electrical wiring and putting in a door. He started at the beginning of December and snuck out like a weasel while we were gone in mid March. What should have taken maybe a couple of months turned into four and still the job is not done after many assurances it would be finished. He is excruciatingly slow working. He was only on site for 6 hours at the most per day and charged us for travel time. Many smoke breaks. We starting warning him two months into the project that we were going to run out of money at this pace yet he did not change his routine. He promised he was a "nice guy" and would finish the job without being paid any more than we had already given him (15K cash not including materials!). He didn't show up for a week and a half because he "hurt his back." He had his wife call to tell me he wouldn't be coming. He was a one man show with a "clean up" man who picked up after him and he continually called him stupid. Eventually, the clean up man stopped coming. Ray gathered up all of his equipment one day while neither one of us were at home and left. While I thought his work was very meticulous, upon closer inspection, it turns out he was just slow. He is very good at laying tile (slowly). He put speaker wires through the walls to where we wanted to hang small ones and without checking that they worked, proceeded to finish the walls. One speaker does not work. He "cleaned" the perimeter of our brand new concrete flake floor and used some sort of solvent and that part of the floor is now missing it's top coat of polyurethane and it is a darker color than the rest. After he snuck out and many attempts to contact him to ask what his intentions were, he then put the blame on us that we were insulting him (we never said a bad word prior to this) and that we needed to thank him and apologize to him before he would come back. Needless to say, he will not be coming back. I hope no one else falls for his "act" of being a "really nice person."
