I recently had an L5-S1 disc bulge, diagnosed by MRI. It was insanely painful, and sharply limited my mobility. I'm happy to say that PT with Derric Lee at GSPORTS has almost completely removed my symptoms. It's a great shop. Derric did a thorough intake/evaluation and developed a progressive program of stretching and strengthening. It took a few weeks, but I saw steady improvement and am now largely symptom-free, about two months after discharge. Around the same time I developed a strange and hard-to-diagnose foot issue. Podiatry thought it was a Morton's neuroma but after several failed attempts by the podiatrist to treat as such, an MRI showed that there was no neuroma. Neurology was perplexed and thought it could be lingering connection to the back injury. So I went back in to see Derric, who did a deep dive into what might be going on. I really appreciate Derric's devotion to his craft! Derric set me on a regime of foot stretches/strengthening and I saw slow but steady improvement. The foot still isn't 100% but I am now back to cycling and hiking and am no longer mobility-limited. I crashed my motorcycle on a dirt road months before seeing Derric. While I didn't break any bones, I was not able to recover with the same mobility I had before the accident. I had several areas of mobility related pain including my neck, chest, shoulders and more. Derric was quick to identify the problems I was having and we made pretty quick progress to alleviate those areas. We are still working through it, but I am seeing progress after each visit. It truly does make a huge difference, and if every physical therapy office is like this one, I would encourage anyone with pain/mobility issues to go get checked out. The staff is friendly and accommodating, I like showing up to my appointments, and we always get started right on time. Had a big flare-up of sciatica-like pain following foot surgery. Went to physical therapy at GSports after acupuncture and chiropractor were not helpful. At that point, I was dubious whether PT would be helpful but figured I'd give it a try anyway. Dr. Lindy Elloway was assigned to be my PT, and Dylan was doing the follow-up therapy in the office, prior to the SIP orders in March 2020. I could not be more pleased with the treatment plan/exercises I've been doing with Lindy. She's extremely knowledgeable and has crafted a personalized plan for me. She continues to add new and challenging exercises which strengthen my core and my pain has improved greatly! She has an uplifting personality, which is a plus and very important in a therapist. After Covid19, I have continued with virtual appointments and it's going very well, much better than I probably anticipated when first starting the virtual appointments. This is a very long-term review (almost a decade since recovery), but all the more perspective on how thankful I am for the care I received at GSports from Jackie. I spent about 2 years battling increasingly debilitating sciatica just before turning 30. Sitting was painful, I walked with a limp, and people often asked me what was wrong when I squirmed from pain at work. Some suggested I shouldn't be lifting heavy things for the rest of my life. Numerous attempts to find care did not help, and neither did any visits to back specialists who simply shrugged things off as degenerative disc disease. That's when I took another chance on physical therapy and found Jackie at GSports. The approach at GSports was completely different from anything I had previously experienced. Jackie was thoughtful, well researched, and incredibly thorough in her examination of every single muscle that could contribute to my condition. We tried and tested areas one variable at a time. After a while there was an "aha moment" that revealed some deep muscles in my lower back had somehow stopped firing, affecting the stability of my spine. From that point forward it was a straight path to recovery with targeted exercises to reactivate the muscles. Within 3-4 months I made a full recovery with no recurrence of the issue since. I've never written a review online. But after suffering an injury and realizing how difficult it was to know which medical professionals were right for me, I figured it was time I paid it forward. In July 2021 I fell rock climbing and tore three ligaments in my ankle. It was a serious injury that left me unable to walk for months and that would take almost a year to heal. I wanted to begin physical therapy as soon as possible and started looking for a provider the second my doctor said I was ready. I wanted a real physical therapist, not just a personal trainer who did rehab. And I didn't want some big box physical therapy chain that would just run me through a one size fits all protocol. I wanted a place that would take me in and really get to know me and my injury. And I found just that at GSports Physical Therapy. My experience there started with Jacquie. When I called I had already been shut down by other offices that couldn't see me for at least another month. At first I was disappointed when Jackie told me their system was down, but she made a note of how soon I wanted to come in. When I called back later that week she said they were booked into the next month, but that she had saved a spot just for me to start the following week. I was and still am so grateful for Jacquie's thoughtfulness that allowed me to begin my healing journey so soon. I could not have been in better hands than I was with my physical therapist, Dr. Derric Lee. When I began treatment, I still in pretty rough shape. But Derric handled my bruised and swollen ankle with such care and tenderness, and spoke to me with such genuine empathy for what I was going through. I could tell how badly he wanted to help me get better. That was just the first day of my long road to recovery, and I am so grateful to have had Derric by my side every step of the way. During the early days of my treatment, he eased my swelling and started me off with gentle range of motion exercises. Then we slowly built up the strength in my toes, the muscles of my foot, and around my ankle. He helped me progress from two crutches, to one crutch, to walking in just my boot. The first steps I took on my two bare feet were uplifting, but with them came complications as the parts of my ankle learned to work together again. This was the hardest point for me because I had come so far, and it was discouraging to realize how much farther I still had to go. Derric saw my disappointment and took it to heart. I didn't learn until months later that Derric was staying up late into the night and morning researching my condition and studying his old notes to find anything that he could try to help me. But that's just who he is. It's the same dedication he showed when he let me borrow his cushioned athletic socks to alleviate the pain of the stiff metal in my brace. Seriously, the man gave me his own socks just so I'd be more comfortable. But my experience with Derric was so much more than his skill as a physical therapist. It was his gentleness and understanding, his levity and humor. It was our talks about what was going on in each other's lives, about music and going to shows, sharing stories and shooting the breeze while he worked on my ankle. It was his cheerful greeting of "Hi friend!" or "How's it going friend?" and I really do consider him my friend. But I know I'm not the only one. It's clear that Derric's other patients feel the same ease and camaraderie with him that I do. Of course I owe my recovery to many others at GSports. My time there would not have been the same without their PTA, Michelle. No matter how frustrated or discouraged I might have felt, Michelle always somehow brought a smile to my face. Her lighthearted singing and silliness brightened up my darkest days, and the attentiveness and diligence she brought to her work made me feel well taken care of. I know she'll make a wonderful physical therapist one day and she'll touch so many lives the way she's touched mine. I also have to give a shoutout to their other PTA, Cameron, who did an excellent job and dutifully stacked 60 pounds of weight onto my leg for calf exercises at every visit. Lastly I want to thank Patrick Gee for lending his expertise throughout my case and for working on my stubborn tendon. I appreciate his valuable perspective and for his help targeting areas to get stronger these last few weeks. It truly was a team effort to get me to where I am now. And so it's bittersweet that I'm discharging today. I'm delighted to be at a point where I am able to walk comfortably, to hike and dance. But I'm sad to be leaving the only real community I've known here. Moving across the country during a pandemic and promptly injuring myself was a challenging and isolating experience. But going to see my friends at GSports was the highlight of every week. I will proudly recommend their services to anyone, and if I ever need physical therapy again I know where I'll go. This is a wonderful choice for physical therapy. Everyone who works here is highly professional. My therapist is Michelle and she's great! After my knee surgery she's worked with me 2x a week and I've seen really awesome results. She knows how to progress movement and strength exercises. She's a really good listener and is always positive and cheerful. I know I'm in good hands. All the other staff are great too. Davey helps with exercises and is fun to work with. With my insurance my copay is $15 a visit so it's very reasonable. The facilities are kept really clean, and it's small and quiet - never overcrowded. I had an excellent experience with GSports. Jacquie was amazing finding space for me in their busy calendar, and was always warmly welcoming and responsive. Dr. Gee (Patrick) was amazing with his manual therapy and effective and safe treatment program. Cameron and Kyle were awesome supports for my PT routines and ice/heat/stim. I came in with a shoulder fracture, impingement, likely torn rotator cuff and could barely use my shoulder and was weak as a kitten. Now I'm doing full pushups and regaining strength after my injury. Most of all, the entire team works together to create a truly professional, convivial and caring environment that feels like a happy place. We were able to quickly get me back to "functional" and then continue making gains toward higher and higher athletic performance. I'm a mountain sports athlete and I'm very demanding of my body across many athletic disciplines (rock climbing, ice climbing, skiing, trail running) and Michelle has been super helpful in helping me maintain and improve performance through this injury recovery period. I just finished a stretch of rehab with GSports and my experience was absolutely wonderful. Right from my first phone call to them to understand their services and how they work with patients all the way to my actual treatment plan with their hands on support to my final exit interview, I was so impressed with their empathy, courtesy, and knowledge. My therapist, Michelle, was absolutely great to work with. She took the time to understand what I needed and then created a plan for me and worked with me through it. Along the way, she was very knowledgeable and flexible, explaining the exercises and evolving them as I got stronger. I went in with lower back pain brought on by a small tear in the muscles around my sacrum. This was also tied to some problems with my sciatic nerve that make the muscles in my left leg tighten up. Michelle understood my problems end to end and suggested an evolving exercise regimen and frankly the pain started to subside and I started to get stronger right from week 1. I came into G Sports with a couple of painful areas: my hip and my shoulder. We first focused on my shoulder because the pain was related to a fracture from a recent fall. Then we switched to my hip when I found that the hip was keeping me awake at night. I was assigned to Lindy for a physical therapist, and various interns cycled through to assist her. I especially liked the intern named Dylan. I could not have asked for a better physical therapist than Lindy. Although she was busy with multiple clients during an appointment time, she spent enough time talking with me to get to know me, and for me to get to know her. She has an upbeat personality, and I always left feeling better than I had felt before I came in, both physically and psychologically. She got my body healing, and she cheered me up. Lindy adjusted my in-clinic and home exercises to accommodate quirks of my body (cramps I usually get in certain positions), and she always put the exercises onto the G Sports online application. I could fetch the exercises at any time, with full written instructions, as well as good drawings and videos. I appreciated having this reinforcement so that I could focus on DOING the exercises when I was with her, rather than having to remember each step of each exercise. Lindy helped with both my hip and shoulder. She started me with baby exercises so as not to hit the pain, and, over time, we moved onto exercises that challenged movement in the painful areas. Lindy was very mindful of my not overdoing the exercises so that my painful areas could heal. I also like the size of the Berkeley G Sports clinic. This review is long overdue, as I completed my therapy this spring/summer. I injured my shoulder early last year and originally went to a different physical therapist. While the other PT helped, my shoulder didn't fully get well, and I ended up aggravating my injury later in the year playing tennis and climbing. At this point, I decided to give GSports a try, inspired by all the glowing reviews. I was not disappointed! I worked with Lia as my PT, with Davey as the aide for most of my visits. Lia really tailored my treatment to my specific situation, constantly assessing my progress to make sure that the exercises I was doing were the most effective. Slowly but surely, I learned a lot about how my shoulder works - not only did Lia help with the pain, but she also helped me understand how to maintain a strong and healthy shoulder and prevent further injuries moving forward. And on top of everything else, Lia and Davey were literally the nicest, friendliest people ever! Derric Lee has been great in helping me with my arm/shoulder rehabilitation. One of the greatest things about him is his willingness to look at the body as a system rather than just treating the problem spot, in this case my elbow, in isolation. With his help I am making progress not only in healing the injury itself, but also learning how not to injure it again by developing strength in the muscles of the shoulder and back that hold my arm in proper alignment. The receptionist, Jennifer, is professional, a pleasure to talk with, and does an excellent job juggling the scheduling. Andrew and Julia did a fantastic job helping me rehab my right hip. Andrew was great at explaining why I was doing the prescribed therapy and exercises and keeping a watchful eye on my technique. Julia's coaching as I performed my exercises helped me quickly tweak my movements to ensure I was performing my exercises correctly and her companionship made my workouts go by quickly. I looked forward to and enjoyed my weekly visits, and now that I've improved my hip issue, I'm going to miss my PT appointments. I sprained my ankle quite severely 5 months ago, leading to a partial tear and (at times) very slow and painful recovery. Working with Dr. Andrew Monteleone and his team, especially Julia and Hector, made this recovery process so much more enjoyable, comforting (but with a good challenge), and speedy. Andrew met with me twice a week for the last few months to pinpoint which areas bothered me the most and honed in on specific exercises I could do to remediate them. He is extremely caring, attentive, and thorough (not to mention, hilarious!). Every person's game plan is different, but mine included: focus on the tissue, joint mobility and hip strength. I would recommend him any day. Everyone I met here has been so, so sweet which I'm incredibly thankful for because this was my first time doing physical therapy (and I was initially really worried). I've seen Dr. Jacqueline Perez for several injuries this year and have received superb care. She's extremely knowledgeable and skilled at working with sports related injuries and has a warm and engaging manner that makes me feel I'm not just another name in her busy schedule that she's trying to rush in and out. All the staff I've interacted with have been friendly and helpful, and the front desk staff have been great at dealing with the insurance side of things. I've broken bones, had surgeries and tested the limits of my body but never have I needed physical therapy until recently. I had a shoulder surgery, which rendered me feeling almost useless in my normal day-to-day activities. I couldn't put a dish in the cupboard or reach out to open a door let alone rock climb or play tennis. If you've never been to physical therapy and you're feeling this way, it can be nerve-racking to go for the first time since you don't know what to expect. I was going to go to the G Sports in SF since it's near my work; however, they couldn't get me in for my initial evaluation for over a week and I didn't have time to wait. I had several friends recommend the group to me so I opted for their Berkeley location since it's somewhat near where I live in East Bay. This was a phenomenal decision and worth going out of my way to get there. I was scheduled with Jackie Perez, who is their clinic director and an incredible physical therapist. Her knowledge is vast, she's welcoming, patient, understanding and will push and challenge your limitations in a positive way. In addition to Jackie, there were aides, who were physical therapy students on a rotation to get hands on experience. They were just as friendly, eager to help and caring. The entire staff has a way of making you feel like you're their only patient. Regardless of where you go for physical therapy, you have to be determined to get better, dedicate time outside your sessions and fight through your mental roadblocks. If you want the best experience and care, I highly recommend seeking out G Sports and Jackie Perez. I can't imagine letting anyone else help me through my recovery. read more

I worked with Jess for nearly half a year on a long-standing shoulder injury which flared up after an ultimate frisbee tournament. Those six months of PT challenged me physically and emotionally. Jess' support throughout helped me immensely; she was a wonderful conduit to the healing and strengthening process. To get into more specifics, Jess' compassion and resolve stand out to me as her strongest traits. She stayed connected with me through the ups and downs of my healing. She was upset when I overdid it with my shoulder (as I was wont to do), but I never felt like she lost faith in me and my healing. If anything, I think she saw setbacks as challenges waiting to be conquered. That is a fantastic attitude and one I want in a healing professional. I am happy to say that, with Jess's help, I am now much stronger than I was at the beginning of PT. As a result I have gotten back to biking, running, and playing basketball and ultimate frisbee. I've never been to a physical therapist before this year when I had first experienced shoulder pain due to weight-lifting. I worked with someone for about 4 months prior to my time at GSPORTS physical therapy, and I must say that the quality of care just did not compare. Jess was amazing with my shoulder. I was 100% confident in her expertise, and my quick improvement is a testament to her abilities. What I appreciated most, was that she answered all my questions thoroughly and helped me make sense of what my body was going through. I can't say enough good things about the PT's at this place. This is the second time I have come for a different series of treatments. First time was for my knee a couple of years ago and this time it was for shoulder impingement from CrossFit. After a doctor told me "don't do that", meaning...don't lift things overhead to avoid discomfort, I decided that wasn't good enough for me. I dunno...call me crazy, but I kind of want to be able to lift things over my head. So I called G Sports and saw Andrew. He assessed and worked with me for several weeks with lots of varying exercises. It has taken quite a bit of time but I went from not being able to open my car door with my left arm to lifting 75 lbs over my head and doing handstands. Its kind of amazing how effective physical therapy is, honestly. The key is consistency and working with people who know what they are doing. Andrew and his assistant, Julia are pretty awesome people and I cannot thank them enough for helping me get back on track to breaking some more PR's. Thanks guys! read more

I have been having knee problems for a while now and when I finally decided to go to physical therapy, GSPORTS seemed to be the best option. To this day, I am still glad that I chose them for my PT. Everyone single person there cares and wants to help beyond just the therapist. Both of their admins, Morgyne and Ayaka, were always super friendly, and were super flexible when it came to cancelling or rescheduling. Made it very stress free when other engagements came up. In my time there, I had a couple aids that helped out my therapist, Jeff and Hillary. I worked with Jeff the most and he was awesome. He would always make sure I was doing my exercises correctly and was awesome at explaining why I was (or wasn't) feeling the exercises correctly. Was sad when he had to switch schedules and I no longer got to work with him. Hillary was the next aid that I had because of the scheduling swap. She stepped in without missing a beat. (She also picked up quickly that it was a requirement to give me a hard time, so well done!) Able. Able was my therapist and I can't say enough good things about him. He was always trying to give me the best help that he could. We had to try a few different plans of attack as my knees were a bit stubborn. He was always very good at explaining why we were doing things a certain way and always answered my questions in a way that was easy to understand. Able was also very helpful outside of the practice. There were times when I wasn't able to make it in but would email with questions and he was quick to respond and answer. Was nice to know that even if I wasn't in the office, he was there to help. I would definitely recommend GSPORTS to anyone that is looking for a place to go to get physical therapy. They are wonderful. Jackie, the clinic director even knew about my issues and would check in with me from time to time which made me feel even better about going there. If you are looking for a great place to get great help, where you feel like you belong (even if you don't want to be there), this is the place. Not a bad word can be said about them. read more

Updating my earlier review after completing my course of therapy with Derric Lee, ably assisted by Michelle, I can't compliment them and this practice enough for their completely professional, caring and supportive efforts in getting me back to basically 100% of my condition prior to arthritic debilitation and hip replacement surgery. Because of the pandemic I had had a lengthy period of inactivity in which my hip muscles engaged in many adaptations to keep me moving through the pain prior to the surgery, so getting me back to normal and essentially pain-free mobility and range of motion was challenging. Derric and Michelle are great communicators and motivators, in addition to being technically skilled at their profession. The environment is welcoming, the facility is well equipped, and the operation is managed very well. Scheduling and rescheduling appointments was handled very efficiently by Jacquie. Anyone considering physical therapy need look no further than Gsports in Berkeley. My friends there will take good care of you. read more

I love GSPORTS! I have a shoulder impingement that I've been struggling with for months. I started going to GSPORTS last month, and the control and strength of my shoulder is really improving. I've done PT in the past, and it never resonated like it does w/GSPORTS. I understand the exercises (they intuitively make sense), and I am doing them on my own, as well as with my personal trainer to get the most out of the work. The folks at GSPORTS spend a lot of time with you during your appointment. I've had a far less positive experience at Gsports than have other reviewers. I've been to more than my share of physical therapy clinics over the years and have preferred all of them to Gsports. At other physical therapy clinics, I've always gotten a full half hour with the physical therapist. At Gsports, they use PT aides, who are in some cases working with clients before they are adequately trained. You get roughly 15-20 minutes with the physical therapist and the rest of the time is spent doing exercises either independently or while a PT aide monitors you. On the positive side, the PT I worked with was very good (hence the two stars) but the way the clinic is run made this a very negative experience for me. If you prefer working with a physical therapist for a full session, this is not the right clinic for you. read more

I just started going a couple weeks ago for an injury in my high hamstring. I was discouraged by my prior PT because I felt as though I had plateaued. G Sports has been so thorough! I am working with Lea and she is kind, thoughtful, friendly, and super knowledgable. G Sports does a great job individualizing your care to your needs, abilities, and preferences. My back was in a lot of pain when I started with Dr. Sarah Jay. Over the course of a couple months of therapy, she got me out of pain, feeling strong and capable again, and even back to activities I had been forced to stop. She and the staff were kind and patient, even to those of us patients grumpy from pain and frustration (like me at the beginning!). I "graduated" with a worksheet of exercises I can continue to progress with on my own. A great experience overall and I highly recommend G Sports! read more
