I took my car to Guans for the first time today, despite having lived in the neighbourhood for close to 15 years. I'm WILDLY impressed. Took my car in for an oil change, winter tire swap, and a look at my squeaky brakes. It was done--including the brakes, which needed replacing--in four hours, was incredibly reasonable in terms of cost, and whichever of Derek's guys was working on my car popped out my dented bumper to be nice (at no charge). Be aware of main guy ( Dereck). When doing business with him , first ask for total cost or make sure to call around few auto shops to compare prices . I came in to change a tire and oil change (synthetic ). All together he was charging $150 Other auto shops usually charge $100. He will avoid to talk about total cost until the job is done . Make sure to get the price before anything gets done and make sure you are aware of this price when paying . read more

This past week, I brought in my car to Guan's for a routine oil change and was told that I needed to replace the spark plugs and rear brakes. I agreed but when I went to pick up the car it was leaking coolant from the engine on my drive home. I immediately called him as I pulled into my garage (I live 2 blocks from the garage). Because the coolant had completely drained, I brought the car back. At this point, Derek told me that the water pump was now broken and that this was a complete coincidence. He then charged me an additional $900 for fix the water pump on top of the $1300 I had already paid. I spoke with two other local mechanics who said this was an implausible story and that the water pump and spark plugs are in close proximity to one another on the engine block and that it is easy to damage the water pump when working on the spark plugs. I would have even swallowed having to pay for the water pump repair had Guan simply acknowledged that it had happened on his watch as an inadvertent error. However, his lack of acknowledgement and insistence that this was a complete coincidence was maddening and unprofessional. There are at least three other garages (Harbord Auto; Crawford Auto; Peter's Garage) within a 10-block radius of Guan's, which I have used in the past. Just moved to Toronto and found this business through Yelp. I am very picky when it comes to auto shops and many other service businesses, as many get a bad reputation. I did my research and I had a great experience so far. Day 1: Made an appointment and my car was looked at during the allotted time. Derek explained and showed me everything he thought it could be - oiled up some parts that may be a concern. Price was GREAT - $41.99 for a diagnostic rather than an hour rate like many other shops charge. He was friendly and explained things and was personable. Waited a few weeks and the sound seemed worse. He gave me a quote on parts and labour and I was pleased with the prices. The parts were much more affordable than other shops and they were the same quality and brand - he doesn't over charge for the parts - you pay what he pays. ie. other place, 2 of the same parts were $300 each, where here I got 3 parts (there's 3 arms for the tires, I wanted to change all 3), for $475 total. Waited again to make sure, then the noise got even worse and had to just change the 3 parts. Called on a Saturday, made an appointment for Monday. Went in, he ordered the parts. I left to drive the car and try to activate the noise (my noise wasn't constant, only showed up after a while of driving). Came back in about 2 hours and the parts were already there. His supplier is local and sends them over asap. I left my car there around 12noon and by 4pm (same day) I was able to go back and pick up my car. Only 1-2 days to fix my issue at a reasonable price and with great service. He explained in detail what he did with my car and showed me my old parts so I knew what the issue was. He also wanted to make sure the right parts were changed and he wasn't doing any unnecessary part changes unless they were needed. This is a smaller shop so they only take on what they can handle - they don't overbook their customers like many other shops do. I'm searching for a new mechanic so based on the good reviews I thought I'd try Guan's. Simple job-- belts slipping, need tightening. When I dropped in, he said he could get it in in about 45 min, which was fine, so I left it. He called about 75 min later to say the vehicle was ready. Excellent! When I went back and checked, the belts were very tight, so far so good. Then I saw all the cutesy "Thank you" messages on his whiteboard-- looking great . Then he says, "I'll only charge you 90 bucks," says it like he's doing me a favour. This is a 20 min. job. When I said, OK, you can charge me that, but I won't be back, he started saying that the mechanic took almost an hour. As we talked, that moved up to "over an hour." (Note the time line above.) So I'll keep looking for my new mechanic. read more

Called Guan's Auto Service today to get a quote to switch my summer tires over to my winter tires without rims for my suv. He told me it would cost $60 and up. I told him I would use my existing rims from my summer tires to place onto my winters tires. He asked what's the make of my vehicle, is it a suv or a car, my tires sizes and how many inches are my tires so I answered all his questions since I still was wanted to get a quote. He finally said $130 then makes up a BS story saying Costco only does flat rates. Appears he wants to rip me off because I am a female and he thinks this is my first time getting tires changed over. The tire changing machine for cars and suv are standard so as to why all these questions is ridiculous. Even my car dealership they will charge $90 tops to get tires changed over. I only called this place for a quote since it's a bit closer to me. I rather drive a bit further to my usual garage who ONLY CHARGES ME $40 flat without any questions. Don't go to this place unless you want to get ripped off and interrogated. read more

************NOT INTERESTED IN NEW BUSINESS********************* I went to this place for an emissions test 2 years ago. He remembered me when I called back and I told him what kind of car I drive. I explained I was looking for a new auto mechanic to fix my car. He seemed to pre qualify me through a series of questions. I asked if he could take a look at my car because of a clunking noise at the front when I drove over bumps. He asked me to call back after the weekend. When I called him back on the Tuesday he said "I'm booked up for the next two weeks". It was obvious through his tone he was not interested in any new business. Derek stands behind his work and goes the extra mile to get it right. My car wouldn't start. He fixed it quickly and also took care of some other problems that were there that we had been kicking down the road but that needed attention. Two days later, a Saturday, the car wouldn't start again. I called and Derek made a house call that evening after his full day at the shop. He sprung for towing the car back and then fixed a bigger, hidden problem within a day charging only for the parts and replacement labor. He waived any charges for the additional diagnostics needed to find the hidden problem. More than fair and as good an outcome as I could have asked for. read more

My car was leaking engine oil , from reviews i chose to come here . upon arrival i was told it would be $30 to plug in the computer to check why my engine light was on. i was told the engine was not leaking oil too much to be concerned which was relieving. I decided to get a oil change while i was there which i got charged $60 Dollars for , so far $90 bucks for basic work that a teenage will little experience can do . They basically upselled me more things that had nothing to do with the original problem i went there for . He asked me "do you wanna clean your headlights" like he woulda done it at no extra cost . He charged me $100 to clean the lights. also charged me $70 for a CABIN FILTER . somehow for all this basic work i was charged $320 . i argued how the hell the price got this high . he beat around the bush lied about price of material and labor cost. rather than raise my blood pressure or get into a heated argument i cut my loss short and left him with the money. I WILL NEVER GO BACK HERE.. He may of made a quick buck out of me but will not get returning business from me. THIS PLACE IS SCAM BEWARE FOR BULLSHIT COSTS ADDED TO YOUR INVOICE. Fast, honest and helpful! I'm usually cautious about auto repair shops because I'm a girl, and short, so usually people try to hustle/mislead me. Annoying to deal with a lack of trust when you're just trying to get your precious car fixed. Guan's was really fast - I pulled up and was able to be out of there easily within 15~20 minutes. I had gone to another place that speculated it might be a problem with brakes - but Guan's was honest and let me know it was just a damn plastic bag stuck to my exhaust. Folks were friendly and amenable. I appreciated being explained the process and what was wrong, even being encouraged to take pictures so I could document what happen! They even diagnosed an issue with my tires that I hadn't gone in there for or been aware of! Glad to finally have a good auto service place close to home. Absolutely would recommend! read more

Weirdest experience I've ever had at any service business. I read all the good reviews. This place is right in my neighborhood. Although I've been taking my vehicle elsewhere (dundas and hickory street area ;) ), and my usual shop is awesome, I just figured for an oil change that this place was much more convenient so I'd give them a shot. I have an old beater of a car. A 1995. This was the conversation at Guan's: Me: I just need an oil change for my old car. Guan's: What year is it? Me: 1995. Guan's: We don't work on it, it's too old. Me: It doesn't need to be worked on, it's just an oil change. Guan's: We don't have the right oil. Me: It's 5W30. Guan's: It's too old. I don't want to work on it. During the conversation, from early on, he basically did everything he could to not look at me and stare at his computer screen instead. ie: a very clear "buzz off, guy". Walked out of there so puzzled. The car being too old... fine. "We don't have the right oil"... that's a straight-faced lie to try and push me out... even though there were boxes of oil quite clearly visible in the shop. And it's 5W30... there isn't a garage that wouldn't have it. So not only a lie, but a lie hoping that I'm a complete idiot. Happy that others have had good experiences. The main owner does not like woman! Whenever I was there with my husband he was nice but I went one time alone and I have never been so disrespected in my life. He kept asking me a question I could not answer about our car (which he had worked on many times before) only my husband could answer the question who'd been a long time customer of his. I offered to call my husband so he could speak to him directly and ask him the question but he yelled at me "I'M NOT TALKING TO HIM I'M ASKING YOU!!" There were other customers witnessing it that told him to chill out. I called my husband who was furious with him and told me to leave. So I told the owner I'd never been treated like this before and that I'd just like my keys back and would like to leave. He threw the keys in my car and yelled "YAH GO!" I was shaking it was so upsetting. We will never go back. I did absolutely nothing to him other than not being able to answer a question about the car. I dropped by after the positive reviews. I had a issue that I am familiar with and actually met Derek after parking outside the garage doors. I was expecting him to be friendly but he was definitely not a happy camper. I tested his honesty about my issue and he totally shocked me by a much higher of a price he quoted me. He didn't seem interested to listen to what I had to say either. Maybe I met him on a bad day but I will not be going there ever. My first impression was the opposite of all reviews posted. Honest shop, reasonable prices, and fast turnaround time. Derek has also not charged me for small things here and there, for example checking why my engine light was on and resetting it when it was just a computer error. My only gripe is that he will sometimes do other things and then add them to your bill without asking you, and then tell you over the phone after the fact when he calls for you to pick up your car. The cost is minor but they are usually minor things that I would just rather do myself. He's done this with things like replacing light bulb, topping up windshield wiper fluid, etc. read more
