These guys are fantastic. I did more than my fair share of mortgage shopping. I started working directly with my bank until I heard a tip that banks often treat you better when a middleman (aka mortgage broker) is involved. It was counter intuitive, but I acted on the tip. It proved to be accurate. I actually started the process of obtaining a mortgage with another well known (but not Guardhill) mortgage broker. I was sufficiently impressed with the rates they were quoting me relative to my direct-from-bank offers, so I paid them an application fee and got a few weeks into the process. Then tip #2 arrived. I was told to check out Guardhill Financial. I was skeptical that one mortgage broker would be much better than another -- especially given that the first broker had already delivered quotes vastly superior to those I got from the bank. But I was wrong again. Guardhill blew away the other mortgage broker. I'm not entirely sure why, but I suspect it is because they are willing to live with a smaller fee (the broker gets paid by the bank based on the ultimate interest rate paid by the borrower; so if they offer you a lower rate, it means they will get paid a smaller fee; in Guardhill's case, I think they do so much volume that they are content with lower per-transaction profits). But beyond the lower rate, which will save me many thousands of dollars over the next several years, Guardhill provided a fantastic service. They anticipated every issue and walked me, a first time mortgage borrower, through the obtuse process. Overall it was a great experience, and they deserve the very highest recommendation read more

I had an unpleasant experience working directly with a loan officer at a bank and Guardhill was able to get my girlfriend and I approved for a loan when we were denied by the bank. They have an extremely professional team of folks and are able to work with your needs. Guardhill not only works with other banks but also loans their own money. It's hard to find a good mortgage broker, as the industry is full of conflicts of interest (eg the lower your interest rate, the less money your broker makes!) and shady characters. Guardhill turned out to be a great choice. Our broker, who managed the process, was upfront about all details, on top of things, and very helpful. They turned me down after a 3+ month process, and kept over $1500 in fees. The issues could have been flagged in the first week. I got no updates during the wait. The way I learned about being turned down was by receiving a difficult-to-understand rejection form from their back office, with no explanation or even cover note from the consultant, David Breitstein, who was supposedly on my side. I asked for a more detailed explanation and was not offered one. I asked to speak with David's boss, who reached out once and then never replied to my emails. This is a bureaucratic operation that does not provide the service you'd expect from a broker. Bitter? Yes. They wasted my time, took my money, and were rude. read more

I have never experienced anything as terrible as doing a mortgage refinance with Guardhill. This is my fifth mortgage transaction so I am not a novice. The broker had absolutely no command of the process and didn't seem to get the concept of customer service. The first mortgage she attempted to manage for me fell apart after I was approved by underwriting because of a "surprise" that the product was not being offered any more. Two months lost in what ended up being a 6 month refinance transaction. It started in May and ended in November. I get the pandemic has made things very difficult. However, basic customer service tenets still apply. All that said, her management, namely Stephen Rybak, is to blame for everything. He never reach out to me knowing my dissatisfaction, even after emailing him directly. And, he had the audacity to send out a boastful, promotional email during a deadly pandemic: "GuardHill Surges Forward as Lenders Pull Back ". The email boasted about quick closings (mine took 6 months) and an easy process. I would like to escalate further but I work at a senior living community with a Covid outbreak. Going through this company was a huge mistake. They promised a lot, but were very careful not to put anything in writing. By the time I realized what a terrible deal I was getting, it was too late. They had already taken hundreds of dollars from me and there was no time to secure a loan with a different bank. I had great credit and savings- I could have had my pick of lenders. Instead, I ended up with insanely high closing costs. They insisted that I not lock in my rates early on, despite my concern that rates were on the rise. a a result, I ended up with .5% higher interest rate than my bank would have given me, resulting in a loss of thousands of dollars over the life of the loan.
