Love coming to the Guild to catch all the newest releases. They make great efforts on having a variety of films to interest all cinephiles. The Guild partners with local and statewide film organizations to assure their patrons are on the cutting edge of what is happening in the film industry. Pick up one of their quarterly schedules and be sure you mark your calendars. Many films are so popular that they sell out. Advice: Get there a few minutes early. It is an exceptional theater that prices movies reasonably, caters to the community on all levels, shows films of every persuasion, hosts community events, and loves every one who attends the films . The Guild is a fun little theatre. Mostly play an array of cult classic films along with some lesser known indie films. Regardless of what they have showing, I find they almost always sell out! I've seen To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, Rocky Horror Picture Show and most recently Akira there. It's always a lot of fun to gather with others that enjoy the film as much as you. I always wonder if anyone among the seats has seen the film as much as me? I think they may have possibly a 100 seats? So recommend you come early and snag as many seats as you need. The Guild is one of those rare cultural gems that not only delivers a stellar array of every possible genre of cult classics and independent films, but also offers talented local filmmakers a chance to screen their labors of love in a real theater with a supportive community based audience. The owner, Keif Henley, actually gives a damn. He supports film art and artists and Albuquerque would be a lesser place without him and his unparalleled level of commitment and hard work. IMHO Central would be lost without The Guild as its vibrant anchor point. BTW I just went to watch the extraordinary Fancy Dancing and was sobbing (joy and sorrow in equal measure). Great prices on tickets and concessions. They're always showing something unique and interesting. Lots of nice dinner and drink spots nearby if you want to make a night of it. What's playing changes very frequently so keep an eye on their website. read more

Guild cinema is a small theater in nob hill with one screen. It's next to some really fabulous restaurants and shops so if you're waiting for your movie to start there will be plenty to do. Even walking around the area was pleasant with the neon lights and a great atmosphere. Tickets are affordable and the owner Keith was there making sure everyone was happy. They don't sell tickets online but they say they rarely sell out so if you're worried about your movie selling out you can get there early to make sure you get a seat. This is now my preferred theater :) read more

The Guild Cinema is one of my favorite places in Albuquerque. They have a well-curated lineup of second-run and independent films. They have a variety of events as well. The theater can be rented, so sometimes there are events that bubble up from the community. The theater is cozy. Yes, that means small. But I've never felt I couldn't get a good seat. The concessions are reasonably priced, which is a surprise in this day and age. Admission is usually $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. read more

Ever since I moved to Albuquerque in 2012, I have been frequenting The Guild Cinema every chance I get. The theater houses an array of eclectic films every week with special events sprinkled in (Midnight Movie Madness; screenings with Q&As from film creators or local experts). Some of my favorite viewings have included Ma vie de Courgette, Airplane!, and Tickled. The co-owners are super nice and work every facet of the business to make sure their patrons are happy and well looked after. Shoutout to Keif for being a true bro and letting my friend use a student discount recently when she forgot her ID. I would highly recommend visiting this theater. From the moment you step in to the building, you can appreciate the hard work and passion that goes into every screening. The popcorn is always delish and the drinks are always fizzy. I got my undergraduate degree in Media Arts right down the road at UNM. In this major, we were required to attend at least one screening here for each semester-long class--tough assignment, right ;). So, it's safe to say that I've spent quite some time at the Guild. This small cinematic arts theater has a little bit for everybody. They show experimental work, late-night cult classics, and even host some live performances. Tickets are usually only $8 and they offer student and senior discounts for some events. I am most familiar with the Guild in their partnership with Basement Films, the only micro-cinema in New Mexico. Basement Films is operated by one of my former professors and they have an amazing collection of footage. The Guild is one of the few places where they'll screen their collections. The Guild does a terrific job in providing a rich artful experience for all. They show films pretty much every night (check their online schedule or pick one up next to your local newspapers). I also highly recommend going to one of the film festivals they host. I've attended everything from an international children's cartoon festival to their annual experimental film festival, Experiments in Cinema, to Pornotopia (yes, it is what you think it is). Basically, if you haven't already been to the Guild, just go. You'll see why it's 5-star material. read more

Albuquerque has definitely been bitten by the "Go Local" movement - and with good reason. So many fantastic small business offer quality services and goods with an added bonus of personal experience. The Guild is no exception. Whether it is that one movie you saw when you were five years old, or that really freaky horror movie you saw a trailer for, or some random Bruce Campbell movie (ty Guild for introducing me to Bubba Ho-Tep), they play movies that fit the preference of any movie buff. Of course they offer movie experiences but they'll occasionally have events like comedy shows, community events, and other interesting event... thingies (Pornotopia anyone?). A fantastic independent movie theater! The movie selections that are shown are thought-provoking and worth the visit. The Guild hosts a variety of festivals such as the LGBTQ film, Pornotopia, etc. They offer student discounts with I.D. The popcorn shouldn't be passed up! It's not overly salted and you can add so many seasonings to it (at no additional cost). Beverages are actually affordable as is the candy selection, if one is so inclined. I had never been to this theater until last week. It shows foreign and eclectic films that you won't likely see in big chain theaters...to be honest, you may never hear about these films until after they have come and gone. It reminds me of the old theaters I went to when I was young. No frills. The staff was very nice. The prices for concessions beyond reasonable. The cost of a 1st show of the day $5! A small but cozy venue. Friendly staff was helpful and knowledgeable. We attended the Albuquerque Funny Fiesta on a whim. It was an enjoyable, entertaining show. Anyway, this review is about the venue. The seats were comfortable and provided a clear view of the stage, even with people occupying the row in front of our row. That's how my friend-turned-Portland-transplant, Colter, described Run Lola Run in 1998. It was like a Yelp film review: skipping the details, he captured the essence of the movie immediately. The next day I caught a matinee at The Guild, and all was right in the world. Just last night, I watched a poet wax and pine on the stage in front of the screen for an hour as part of the Revolutions Festival. These experiences and so many others epitomize how this little art house has improved my existence in the 505. I've read every review, our community says it all. We came here for a screening of A Blood Red Sky, a documentary film that is independently traveling across the country through various cities. I was surprised at how authentic the theater was. It had the original box office window, water fountain, a nice little snack bar with REASONABLE prices for popcorn, candy and drinks. An independent movie theatre is one of the most important staples to a city for me, and The Guild delivers. It has an awesome selection of movies and documentaries, it's supports local film festivals big and small, and it has live comedy! Everything is reasonably priced, and way cheaper than a typical movie theatre. Every preview they show for upcoming features leaves me thinking, "I wanna see THAT, too!" The only bummer is that more people aren't in the audience whenever I go. It seems like a "hidden" Albuquerque gem that should not be a secret! The owners/managers are so nice! My boyfriend accidentally left his little sketchbook behind, and Keith made it his priority to recover it and see that we got it back. I feel like every dollar I contribute to The Guild goes right back into supporting the arts. Bravo! read more

No doubt I'm a regular here. Small comfy cinema with thoughtfully selected films. One of my favorite places in town.

Businesses come and go in Nob Hill, but if The Guild Cinema shuts down I will hurt myself as way of protest. The Guild screens an astonishing variety of independent and foreign films, along with great classics, documentaries, cult, animation, midnight movies, mom's matinees, PLUS they rent their space out for private screenings AND have great popcorn which you can slather with real butter and nutrional yeast (for all you children of hippies out there). Keif and Chris are amazing, interesting, eclectic individuals you should consider yourself lucky to have a conversation with, whether it be about film, music, local politics, education, beer, censorship . . . seriously, pick their brains if the opportunity arises. I love beer and coffee and pastries and free-range eggs and office supplies and overpriced clothing just as much as the next person, but The Guild brings something truly special and irreplaceable to Nob Hill, and I defer to them as an arbiter of local culture. The next time you find yourself in the area for coffee, drinks, or a bite to eat, consider rounding out the experience by taking in a movie at The Guild. Their monthly program is always available outside the theatre so you can plan which of their variegated offerings to attend. My attachment to this place of business is merely as a denizen of Nob Hill, but I strongly urge you to patronize The Guild. I love the Guild and you probably should too. They show a great mix of documentaries, foreign, indies, classics, local films, and other really fun esoteric stuff. Keep tabs on their calender because they have a lot of cool events and themed weekends. I think my favorite was a sort of curated "grab bag" of shorts where you had no idea what you were going to see. It was a lot of fun. They've also been doing cult movies at midnight which is a great opportunity to see some favorites on a big screen. Also, considering the sky-high price of movie tickets these days the Guild offers a pretty good deal on tickets, $7 for general admission, $5 if you have student ID, and $5 for matinees. It's a great date spot because no matter what you've seen you'll have something to talk about afterwards, you're already in Nob Hill so you can just walk to or from dinner, and film enthusiasts are hot. read more

I LOVE this, our only art-house cinema in ABQ. The following story is not a critique of this business, but rather of a pair of its patrons with whom I had an uncomfortable confrontation yesterday. This morning I sent this private message to the FB page of the Guild. The offending bovines were arguing with the owner/manager after the movie, and when I came out of the theater, I heard the lady say, "Here he comes!": "I must apologize for your having to deal with the outrageously ill-mannered couple yesterday after I very politely asked the woman two rows behind me to please chew with her mouth closed during the 3pm showing of Holy Motors. The behavior I witnessed from this pair I would expect from teenagers at an 18-screen superplex, but certainly not from ADULTS at a single-screen art house. They first sat down right behind me a few minutes into the film, and proceeded to have a running dialogue. After I turned my head in their direction a couple of times, they got up and moved a couple rows back. And continued their discussion of the weird foreign film! Then, about 40 minutes before the end of the movie, "she" began to chew her cud like no one's business. Now, most of us learn to chew with our mouth closed in polite company. But I put up with it for a good long while, not wanting to destroy an otherwise pleasant atmosphere. But after 15 minutes or so of the inane racket, I turned and asked--but politely--if the "lady" would not mind chewing with her mouth closed. And then, of course, all holy hell broke loose, and they in no uncertain terms told ME how rude I was being! That's when I called this lady a "cow." Which, sirs, she certainly was. I really should have said something when I came out to use the bathroom. Again, I apologize for the disturbance. I just received this awesome response from the Guild: "Hi Tom, thanks for the message. I got the impression she was a little bit off. I've never seen her or her husband before. If you want too see HOLY MOTORS again in a better circumstance you can be my guest though I'm not working on Sunday and that's the last day. Let me know and I can let the Sunday guys know. The Guild Cinema is not only a great place to see a variety of movies that you have heard about or seen previously, but it is also a fairly safe gamble for those with the desire to see something they've never seen or something they've heard very little about prior. Over the past twenty years I have been to The Guild numerous times, and had a positive experience on every single occasion. I don't always enjoy the movie being screened, but I havr never had anything but positive experiences at the location and positive interaction with the staff. The cost for a movie at The Guild is surprisingly inexpensive, especially for students. One might think that low ticket prices must be subsidized by ridiculous snack prices. While the snacks are less cost effective than a convenience store, they are still far lower than any other movie theater in town. If you're looking to burn a few hours watching a movie you may not understand, or perhaps asks you to think a bit harder than an Andy Cohen produced television show, then you are likely to be satisfied with a visit to The Guild. The only warning I would have is that on occasion The Guild screens locally written/created "movies". While I tip my hat to The Guild for supporting local artistic endeavors, I suggest you find another night to check out the business. Often the house is filled with friends and family of the writer/director, who can be quite obnoxious and disturbing throughout the screening. Not to mention that often someone from the creative team, usually an overweight, curly headed, 40 year old, male, director with self-esteem issues that can only be held at bay by casting young women from the university that will praise him, smile at him, and stroke his shriveled ego, because they don't know any better, will be spouting nonsense about his process which really just boils down to the fact that he no longer feels anything valuable about his life, which is only exacerbated by the fact that his unattractive wife, who he settled for, no longer has any kind of love or devotion to give him. To be fair, she's also suffering from a lifetime of settling due to failing miserably at her own inadequate creative endeavors. read more
