Guitar Center in Canton is Awesome. Sure, they have a great selection of instruments, but it's their people who make this store stand out. Each and every one of them is helpful. I'm especially impressed by Martin in Guitars. As a fledgling guitarist, he was extremely patient and knowledgeable in helping me select an instrument (several actually) over multiple store visits. Gonna have to give them high marks because they hit all of the marks. I rocked up into GC Canton a couple of hours before closing on a Friday. They were there to greet me at the door and asked me what I was coming in for. I joked that I was there for the presidents day sale and was really looking at picking up a spark2 and looking at some guitars. They let me peruse the guitars at my own pace and try them out as I pleased. I must have played about a dozen different ones before I found one that I really liked. I took the instrument up to the front and asked them what they could tell me about it and they gave very informative responses and told me about the features of the instrument and what else (besides the feel when playing) differentiated it from other lower-priced offerings from the same manufacturer. I was satisfied with the answers and chose the guitar and left with the guitar, spark2, and some accessories like strings and picks and a capo. Picked up a new stand for my guitars as well -- works great. All that and I was in and out of there in a little over an hour because nobody wasted my time with waiting or BS. Colin and his team did a fantastic job and then when I had checked out and was ready to go he walked me to my car with the guitar in the cold and I appreciated that as well. Just all in all a fantastic experience and I was really pleased with the level of service I received from Colin and the team who were working the store Friday night. The person who seemed to be the shift supervisor wearing a blue shirt/smock was very boisterous, loud and used inappropriate language. Racial & other things all within earshot even from another area. The cashier first told me they did not have an item that the website was wrong. Then he saw me look at it on the wall behind him. Then "oops... here it is. The website is always wrong!" Then the item was an open box so I asked what price off the $379? He said it's 10% off the price. So after he rung it up for FULL price anyway, I paid so that I can take it to my regular store in Southfield to talk to a manager there. The Southfield store is excellent and they treat all customers with respect. I buy all my studio equipment there. Canton store .... Never not even 1 star, I wish I could erase it read more

Selections use to be a lot better about 10 years ago with all their products. My main problem with going here's the employees always seem like the biggest jerks. very pushy about selling things and very rude to everyone. Aside from that they will pay you the lowest amount possible for used gear. I have spent thousand there on gear and when I try to sell something back in near mint condition they want to give you maybe 1/6 of what its worth. Even top brand names. I wanted to sell a Gillien Kruger speak that I had bought from them 3 years ago and they didn't want to buy it because it was too big ? despite everything working perfectly fine. They also tried to lowball me on a Marshall Tube head. Telling me the market right now is over saturated with musical instruments. I understand they need to do a markup as well but I'm going to spend my money at the local shops from now on. Never stepping foot in here again. read more

I had bought a Martin guitar from Canton Guitar Center years back. My original experience with the customer service/manager was exceptional. The end pin on this guitar keeps coming loose and I had to take it in a couple of times - again exceptional service; they were patient, kind, and thoughtful people. This week I had to take it in again. The service was so bad. A young man was at the counter. He would not even listen fully to why I was there without cutting me off. Then he went on to curtly say that I will have to wait 1 month to get this done. Contacting the manager was of no use - a guy named Kevin - who repeated the same message with the same attitude. One month for a 5 minute job? May be they should fire the manager and hire a tech instead! I wonder whether this business can survive this way. It is a far cry from my pre-COVID experience. Disastrously poor service and product quality. Many products appear to be "new" but are in fact open box, missing parts and pieces and not labeled as such. Unreliable order process too (including in store). Made the mistake of ordering a christmas gift at this location - the product ordered was incorrect. Worse still, after I accepted that the wrong product would be okay, they didn't even get a new product... it was open box AND missing parts... worse STILL they never bothered to inform me, despite timing (right before Christmas). Result is I had to scramble to find it elsewhere and now it is unclear if it will make it on time. All this happened just a couple months after another incident where I bought something in store only to find out once home that it was used and missing pieces... I apparently an a glutton for punishment dealing with this joke of a place after being burned multiple times (more than the above two issues...) No more. read more

Loyal customer, and I will never return. I dropped a display guitar off to have it restrung because I really didn't feel like doing it myself. So, no setup, no repair/rebuild, no problem, right? I dropped it off (done this before) and as per usual, I expected it would be a few hours or so, and the employee indicated as much. Returned three hours later and told it wouldn't be done same day. So I called a week later, crickets. Showed up at the store two weeks after dropping it off, and still...no strings. The employee asked if they called me to let me know, and I told him this story, so he got my guitar and handed it to me without a word, no apology, no effort, no way I'm patronizing guitar center ever again. HEAVILY mixed bag depending on the staff working not only that year, but any given day. I've had an older salesman straight up accost me for ordering a guitar online (picked up in store) instead of through a salesman. "Why would you do that? Don't you know we get you better deals?" Ok, then how come every time I ask about pricing you say you can't go lower than the listing? There used to be a younger guy in his 30's with slicked back black hair and a beard who was great, but I haven't seen him lately. The last few times I've been there they had much younger employees who didn't seem to know exactly what they were doing and were shockingly unprofessional in front of a customer (example... complaining about their hours and coworkers). I don't really care about that, but it caught me off guard and many will find it off putting. But they were chill, just didn't really know workplace etiquette. People will complain about the somewhat awkward checkout system, particularly when the usual desk person is occupied elsewhere (you just kinda wander around looking for someone or floating around the area) and made worse by how long some people can take to checkout, but this is something you get used to after visiting like three times. If it's not busy, you will likely get good service. They aren't inattentive. Maybe not professional level, but what you'd expect and they're generally nice to you (old salesman yelling about online purchases aside). However, if you come when it's busy and you don't know exactly what you want and how to checkout, you will likely be in a quite awkward position. They have solid inventory and a nice used collection. The walls are always full. It's not like some of the sad, empty guitar centers you see online. If you want something, you'll find it here. Bought my first vocal setup! Ready to rehearse! Ran in 15 minutes before closing. The staff was friendly and though I didn't know the drill for entering and exiting, the guy at the door didn't tackle me, though the look in his eye showed maybe he was trained to and it took much effort to stay polite. We wrapped up our shopping as quick as you can and left confident we got some good advice for first-timers. Love my setup and look forward to our next visit. read more

First I'd like to say that all guitar centers are not created equal . After reading the other reviews for the Canton store,I feel validated . At first I thought it was me, I'm older and a women, go figure. Now I know I'm not the only one who's feeling this. My 1st time in this store in about 15 years. I also had to stalk someone to help me and then it was like pulling teeth for their time .(It wasn't busy.) No one offered any assistance what so ever . I stood there watching employees chat it up with each other while I and other customers stood there wondering what the ----. Some of the employees were rude and abrasive . The only thing that kept me going back to this store was convenience. In my search for the right guitar I'd visited the Southfield store, the AllenPark store and the Detroit store . The customer service I received from them was impeccable. The Canton store lacks the very element that keeps people coming back. The element would be ( kind mannered customer service). I just dropped 2 grand on a guitar in this Canton store and the manager or whoever that was didn't even say thank you for your business. WOW !! I feel like they just want your money and then get the ---- out. Don't ask questions and don't expect much...Just buy it and GO. My worst experience ever in my whole life buying a guitar and not to mention the thousands of dollars I've spent in this store over the years. I was looking to purchase an audio mixer for my podcast. After explaining to the salesman that I already had mics, cables and mic arms he recommended I buy a $1,600 starter set that included mics, cables and mic arms. I again explained that i only need the mixer. He said my cheapest option was $600. I already had researched some of the mixers and really only need something in the $100-$200 range. I left the store in Canton Michigan feeling like I had been a part of a short change trick. Matters could not be handled there. They said guitar center bucks and the 10% discount for used equipment trade in cant be used at the same time.They were wrong, a 5 minute call to the 1 800 # proved them wrong and I was quickly compensated. They do have a good selection of inventory and I find myself going there only if my local music store does not have a part. Prices are reasonable depending on what you need, though you can get better deals online. Its a circus throughout the place, so loud and noisy especially on the weekends. Most of staff are wanna be rockers who have not the slightest clue about an instrutment even though they pretend they do. Hard for me to take them seriously with the whacked hair, multiple tattoos and piercings. It seems like the only musical talent some got is the ability to play a couple bars of Smoke on the Water. Be prepared to up-sold on parts and equipment that you really do not want or need. Buyer protection? seriously you have to be kidding. read more

This place is terrible. I've been standing at the register for 10 minutes and the employees have passed me many times. When I asked if anyone was working the register they act like the didn't see me. Also I return a guitar stand which had a gift receipt and they insisted the return go back on the person who gave me the gift credit card! Okay so I have to ask the person for the money? I have been playing for about 8 years now, and got a nice American Strat here, as well as a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp, some stomps etc. I gotta be honest - I don't like going in here. I find the staff more pushy than helpful, and don't like being made to feel like a criminal every time I leave. When I bought the Strat, the clerk set me up with a Fender strap -- they hassled me at the door on the way out like I was ripping them off, telling me guitars don't come with straps and there wasn't a strap on the receipt. I told them the deal and they still didn't buy it - we had to get the clerk (or was it the manager) over to the door. That said, they do pretty much have the best selection within a 20 mile drive. You can run in and pick up just about anything you need. I don't know though - if they actually had any competition, I would be doing some comparison shopping. read more

Came in today to purchase an adapter for a DIY guitar pedal I built. There were several options that would satisfy what I needed and most of them cost a decent amount. I went to swipe my card for one of the more expensive and not necessary options and the clerk stopped me and asked me to wait for a moment while he spoke with the manager. They had the same adapter sitting around and just slapped it in my hand for free. This was approved by the manager. Of course I bought several cables and some other small items that I didn't really need just to show my support, but this particular store, it's staff, and it's management have gained my loyalty. I have been to some BAD Guitar Centers and this one really sets the standard for how they should all be modeled. I am very grateful that I live nearby this particular store, and though they may have given me a $14 item for free earlier today, I have a ~$1000 amp purchase that I was going to get from Musicians Friend and will now purchase from this store. Me and my mom got profiled at this guitar center. I guess we look like we can't afford a Gibson les Paul. Employees were talking bad about customers and complaining about customers. I would give it a 0 star but one guy was nice and helped me out. Me and my mom got told expensive guitars are not to be played unless you are thinking about buying and is not for recreational use. Beautiful instruments abound, being a powerful corporate entity ensures that. But I don't like being hassled, haggled and having to dispute my needs upon checkout. Also, they need to take care of their used gear upon arrival. I've attempted to play non-working gear many times. They're usually friendly enough, but that's part of the pressure isn't it? I'm giving two stars but would give one if the first visit had gone differently. So I bought a purple ukulele from this center and the works an amp, mic, stand, wires, everything needed for a performance. After waiting a week the warehouse ukulele came in (the store one had scratches on it and was clearly not properly used) now the warehouse ukulele was just as bad, covered in scratches and nicks and completely dirty, there was a layer of dirt on the frets. The guy said it was from the finish but I knew better then to believe that since you could clearly see they were finder nail scratches and there was something handing on the bridge that wasn't even supposed to be there. I felt blown off by the people working there, the guy at the mic counter (we will call him bob) yelled at me saying I couldn't walk around the store with the mic that was already paid for, that I was exchanging. In the end and very unhappy I ended up taking home the store ukulele that was scratched and used with no discount or anything ; because there was no guarantee that by ordering another from the Warehouse would come new and I would lose the store one that was just ok looking. I should of just returned everything and gotten my 600 dollars back (which I'm still considering doing since I'm not at all happy) If you can tell it's used you should be giving people at least 20 percent off!!!! When I was getting rung out for the cord, the cashier (we will call him joe) yelled at bob behind the counter who asked for help and yelled at him again for something on the counter...that is not how you treat people. Even though bob yelled at me for wanting to carry my mic he still did his job by asking for help with 3 customers, and did not deserve that disrespect from Joe, especially in front of people it's just rude as fuck. This store needs to get its crap together I was there for over an hour just trying to get some answers and everyone walked away or ignored me because I'm a girl...I was the last person anyone helped and I had to stalk people at the store to get their attention. We are all musicians and should be happy to help but this store is filled with so much negativity it's hard to go in and find anyone happy. I have been a long-time customer of Guitar Center. I started shopping there in 1996. And Have spent over $30,000 at their stores in the metro area. Always had pretty good service at Northwestern location. However the one on Ford Road is an absolute joke and a disgrace to musicians and the general public. The staff is rude, and unhelpful. I've gone a couple times because it's closer to my house. The staff is so bad particularly one salesman that looks like Zack Morris from saved by the bell. He is a terror. And unfortunately has caused me to boycott the store completely after years as a dedicated customer. Sorry Guitar Center looks like you're on the way out obviously! I hate this store but it's the only one around. I'm new to the guitar world and I feel stupid with the questions I come in with,and feel even dumber when I leave due to the way I'm treated if they don't know you by name they have no time for you. How they gonna get to know you unless they take the time to try. Dumb me I'll be back. There's no where else to go. I was trying to get info on a guitar the guy would not stop and talk I had to walk and talk and walk and listen. Finally he goes tell him bring it it in, dude have you been listening to me ??? They have managed to get my time, but they will not get my money. I called this particular store, and they seem to have a very strong focus on encouraging customers to buy add-ons and upgrades. However, their grasp of basic listening and product knowledge was poor. I had to repeat my very simple product question multiple times. They kept launching into tangents about add ons and vague comments about the "amaaazing quality" and features of the instrument. After the 3rd time I repeated my question, they put me on hold for many minutes, only to state: "At that price, I can only assume the keyboard has that feature." I wonder why it took so many minutes to get zero real information.... read more

I am very disappointed with the store manager. I paid for 2 day shipping. Ordered early morning on 11/14. 11/15 the site said "processing" I spoke with the manager I believe his name was Adam? He told me he would overnight the shipment. I just tracked it and it says 2 day shipping. So, 3 days and I paid for 2. The customer service Rep also told me that my order was in early enough for it to ship on 11/14. Some lazy associate decided it wasn't that important. Poor service on guitar center's behalf. People are very helpful at this GC. They know what they are doing. The ones that ask, make you feel bad if you don't buy protection on your purchase. It's fine if they suggest buying protection, but they should just take no for an answer...not make you feel bad. Doing that almost erases the good banter you had leading up to the purchase and drives people who spend a lot of money (like me) to the internet. This isn't just something that happened to me once, it's almost every time. Sometimes we don't want to buy all the add ons and protection. That being said! I like the place, it's nice to still have storefronts to bounce ideas off people. As long as they keep their prices close to the internet, I will pay a little extra for same day purchase and a little back n' fourth:) read more

Good selection of items, only non online place to get anything instrument related in the area really. Prices are pretty good, staff is usually real helpful. The only downside are the kids who hang in their smashing on drums and shredding away on guitar like they're the only person in there. While Guitar Center is a great store to buy effects pedals, amps, and accessories, I would advise you not to buy a guitar from here. Not to diss the staff, who aren't so bad, but on my last visit to this location the instruments were very poorly taken care of. No set up on these guitars so the intonation is out of whack, fretboards are dried out, many with sharp frets that need to be dressed, and warped necks with strings way too high off the fretboard. Most of the instruments on the rack need about $50-$100 of maintenance to be in playable condition. The guitars are in such bad condition, I don't know how any musician could come into this store and choose an instrument based on anything but the way it looks. As someone who takes good care of his guitars and plays them every day I cringe a little bit thinking of all the beautiful instruments in this store that are in need of TLC. Sure, you might save some money on a guitar here, especially with the coupons, but you will have to put that money right back into the instrument when it inevitably needs to be set up. read more

I have been into music all of my life. From playing guitar, bass, and more recently, producing my very own music, I cannot think of any instance of a bad experience here. I did have my guitar calibrated there once one time, and I wouldn't recommend that particular person, but aside from that, all positive. I go there just to hang out and to blow off steam sometimes. Always a friendly face, always someone willing to help me out. Of course, you're always getting recommended stuff you really don't need, but that's their job, to get you to buy. I will say that now, since I've been more into producing electronic-based music, the knowledge just doesn't stop there at the instrument section. The software guys know what's up as well. I go here for ALL of my music needs. read more

Some people hate Guitar Center Stores. I've never been to another one besides the one located in Canton Michigan. I've always enjoyed excellent service. That store seems to hire salesmen of all ages. Everyone that i need help with always tries to help. I've gotten great deals on harmonicas, guitar, basses, drums, and they have an extensive selection of strings. The guitar repairs are 100% professional. I love this store. read more

The Good: Guitar center has LOTS to choose from, and prices are usually low. The Bad: Everyone here is new. What I mean by that is that nationwide, Guitar Center employees only last an average of 6 weeks. People quit quickly, as wages paid to them are very low, and they have to sell unachievable high amounts of gear to "qualify" for their commission. As it is nearly impossible to get the commissions, employees quit soon, and are replaced by new people. As a result, the employee who helps you is PROBABLY new. They PROBABLY do not know the actual answer to your questions; but they are VERY motivated to get you to buy, so they can get closer to earning commission. SO, they will often invent an answer (which is going to be wrong), just to try to get the sale. In the drum department, I have been waited on by keyboard players, guitarists, and a wannabee lead singer or two. When I am waited on by an actual drummer, they are often high school kids with no idea about what a serious musician is looking for. On the rare occasion I have been waited on by an actual good drummer, he was gone by the next week when I came in. The Bummer: GC is a rock-n-roll only shop. For the musician who wants tools to play other music - look elsewhere. Percussionists will not find decent mallets (not yarn, rubber, timpani mallets, or any other kind) that are use-able on the gig. Final Verdict: If you need it cheap and now, and you know exactly what you want, call GC, and best of luck. If you need expert advice, do not go anywhere near them. read more
