For something like a guitar, where you are going to be spending a reasonable amount of money for something that you will physically be handling, you want to physically go to a place and play the instrument, especially for a first time buyer (like myself). It's definitely an investment. GuitarCenter had a great selection of guitars and accessories along with a lot of other musical instruments. They didn't have the exact model of guitar that I wanted, but they had something very close. It was a clean, well stocked store. My one negative comment was there was a bass player that had his amp up very loudly. In hindsight, I should have also plugged my guitar into an amp. The service was well balanced between offering help but not hovering over me and trying to sell me on something. The prices were competitive to online retailers. I wouldn't hesitate to go there in the future. read more

You've got to be kidding me. What's with the anti-everything-Guitar Center mindset? Yes, you can get better prices online (Guitar Center has a price match program) but you can not even try the equipment before you buy. Online purchasing is always a risk. Not all equipment are built the same and Guitar Center is convenient in case you want to try and/or return. My experience was wonderful even though I didn't purchase anything from the San Mateo location. I bought an Egnater Rebel combo from the SF Guitar Center. SF GC let me take home a floor model while they ship a brand new one for me to the San Mateo location. In San Mateo, they were helpful. They opened up the package and checked for any rattling parts. Great help and friendly people IMO. Criticize Guitar Center all you want if you've been treated unfairly, but some of the reviews for this brand new location were infantile. If you complain about teenagers playing metal music too loud, don't blame the store which is allowing you to test their equipment at such a volume. Blame the teenager instead. Give the kid 1 star. If you want to shop online, then shop online instead or give their price matching program a try. I never tried price matching though. Remember buying local always has economic benefits for your area. You spend $1k in Guitar Center, it goes to paying employees which in turn spend that money somewhere else, then that place spends it on something else, etc etc. If you just do not like corporations, then I'm sorry but I didn't find any other decent guitar store in San Mateo. NO inventory, NO service, me NO comeback. I was trying to look for the new American vintage series Stratocasters with no luck. Everything on the floor was pretty much the lower echelon instruments and amps. The few workers they had were all entertaining the kids trying to shred on the line 6 amps. So I had to look for what I was searching for on my own. They did have a couple of custom shop strats that were so high I couldn't even really see what they were. When you see a grown ass man trying to look, maybe you should help him. He can possibly purchase. One of the many reasons I really hate going to guitar center. At least at Stevens Creek they let me play what I want in the little vintage room where all the nice stuff are kept. Actually that's where I first tried the 65 strat reissue I was looking for. Maybe if I can't find one in a mom and pop, I will just have to go back there. GC Hillsdale needs to step it up. read more

By far the worst Guitar Center I've been to. It's really a shame since it's the closest location to my home- the product selection is also very limited. If you're a learned musician, it's quite obvious that the people who work here have no real knowledge of the products they sell. I went in about 1 week ago and received help from a younger gentleman. After he offered me earbud headphones and a performance microphone for Studio recording, it was obvious that he knew nothing about the products and that all he cared about was making his commission. Also, while I was being helped, the same associate kept walking away to help other customers even though there was at least 3 other available employees. I walked out, no thanks. read more

Guitar Center as a whole have lost me as a long standing customer. This review spans both San Francisco and San Mateo stores. 04/12 Needed to purchase an NI Komplete Kontrol S49 Keyboard Controller. Since I live in Mountain View, I checked San Jose, followed by San Mateo which neither had any in stock. San Francisco's Van Ness store did. So I placed the order for in-store pick up, despite the 80 mile round trip drive. I also had to pay $5.00 parking in the garage around the corner for a 15 minute visit. The staff were very nice, followed Guitar Center protocol and I picked up my "brand new" keyboard at the door and left. I got home and opened the box, which had clearly been opened before, only to discover that they sold me a floor model or very used piece of equipment. Fingerprints and grime all over the equipment, cables had been unraveled and dumped in the box, definitely not the $600 brand new keyboard I paid for and was expecting. I immediately called the store and asked for a manager and spoke to Matt Cox. He was nice and understanding and agreed to have a brand new replacement sent to the San Mateo store for me to pick up. But not same day. He said to go ahead and play with the one I already had and consider it a "loaner". Upon trying to authorize the software for use in my DAW I received an "Invalid Serial Number" error which indicated someone had already registered the equipment. Now I am pissed because other than standalone, the equipment was useless for my purposes. 04/13 10:29am I called San Mateo GC and spoke to Andre. Again, very nice person. I asked for an ETA of the new equipment and was told if it was coming from the central warehouse it would be 2 -3 days. If it had to come from the manufacturer, 4 - 6 weeks. More pissed, but ok as I was hoping for the best. I was told they will email me when it was ready for pick up. 04/14 3:42pm I called San Mateo GC just out of curiosity to check the ETA since I basically did not have anything solid. I spoke to Rodney, who was the nicest yet. He had to call me back after he called Native Instruments for the ETA...uh oh. But ok. 04/14 3:55pm Rodney called back and told me the ETA was 04/20, over 1 week after I had purchased the used equipment in my possession. I called BS and said I wanted to cancel my order. He said ok but he needed to transfer me to Andre. Andre asked if I was sure I wanted to cancel my order and I told him yes. I then said I would drop off the equipment I had, when I had a chance. At no time did anyone seem concerned about the situation. The gas I burned, the frustration, the deception of selling me a used piece of equipment as new (which is probably illegal to some degree). It was dishonest to allow me to leave the store with a used piece of equipment that I purchased at full price. Despite the niceness of the staff, there was little to no customer service. It just felt like "Oh well too bad for you." I will not be using Guitar Center following this issue. read more

I walked into this store the day before Christmas and bought some gifts. among the gifts was the "String Club", great idea, give $60.00 worth of strings for the price of $20.00. I was giving it to my GF's brother, I was told he would not like the gift. So I went to the store to take it back for an exchange or girt card... anything would have been good. But when I ask the sales person about the refund he said they do not refund "String Club". I was bummed, I had to eat the $20.00. But, the sales guys said "wait, let me talk to my manager" After speaking with the store manager he needed to speak to another associate at another store to make sure if he could give me a gift card. After confirming that they could not give me a girt card or store credit, he told me I was stuck with the "String Club" card. I was double bummed now! But he said " why dont you look for something in the store for 20 bucks, and I'll work something out. So he asked my sales guy to help me find something in the store to offset my "String Club" purchase. So we set out to look at some other gift ideas. But at this point i'm not really getting the big picture on what im getting into. So I asked my sales person "What are we actually doing, will I have to buy whatever we find" and the young man said with a smile "No, our manager is awesome" he's giving it to you. What I didn't know was that the manager was walking up behind me. Being that he heard what I had asked the sales guy. he said in a joking way "OK, what did I do wrong now" So I asked again "will I have to buy whatever I pick out" He just grinned and said No. Just have a great day! So he wrote some stuff into the computer and took my name and handed me the gift I picked out. I just could not believe that this manger went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that I got my moneys worth! Above all this, he didn't want the "String Club" card back. He said give to someone else. This was just a great act of kindness on the part of this manager, and he made my day for sure! read more

My Gibson acoustic needed polishing so I got the Dunlop Formula 65 polish at Guitar Center at Hillsdale Shopping Center. When I started to use the polish it permanently clouded up the finish on the guitar. I took the guitar back to Guitar Center to show them the damage. After much back and forth with their tech in Concord they said I could bring it to him in Concord and he would try to buff it out or fix it. First, the store should not be carrying an inferior product like this Dunlop polish. Second, they should at least warn the customers that this polish may do permanent damage to the instrument. Third, they should have offered to refund me the price of the polish (they didn't). Terrible customer service response to a lousy Dunlop product. Also, it would be more pleasant in the store if they had a private room for the shoppers testing out basses! They have a private room for the acoustic guitars and another for the drums. The guys playing bass in their are too LOUD. At the very least, give them headphones because I don't want to be subjected to listening to their awful playing. So, buyer beware - - this store provides low-level customer service and sells inferior products. read more

Quick disclaimer: I come here to play instruments and have fun. I've honestly never bought anything here, so that may make my entire review insignificant but I'm writing it anyways. I love coming here just to jam and hangout with friends! I'm probably not helping their business by saying that, but this place is the place to go. They have most instruments here that are just fun to play. They try to do a lot of fun stuff for the community by trying to host certain events, but I'm just here to play on the instruments. Especially for a high schooler, this place is like the go to place for after school, just being able to hangout with my friends and do something fun, not just window shopping (I hate looking at things I can't have, if I'm going to go shopping then I want to buy something!) Anyways, I don't know too much about actually buying things from this place, so I hope I haven't wasted your time... But if you're looking for a place to chill, come jam out! read more

So I visited this Guitar Center with the inention of trading up my instrument. Prior to me arriving here I called another guitar Center to value my trade in and it was not much. I figured if I purchased the instrument I wanted that the value of the one I wanted to trade in would at least cover the tax, so to me it was worth it. So when the gentleman asked me if I needed assistance at the San Mateo guitar center, I told him what my intention was and right away he was very discouraging. He told me since the item that I wanted was already on sale, I would not get any more discounts off it. I already knew that. And then he told me that the item I was trying to trade in would not be worth much at all. I already knew this coming into this situation, I figured at least it would be a win for me because I got rid of the instrument, and I wouldn't have to go through the hassle of trying to sell it. This sales person didn't give me any options and I felt brushed off. I too am in sales and I felt that he did not want to assist . Maybe in his eyes, his intentions may be coming from a good place (I doubt it), but my perception as a customer was not positive. I would have appreciated a more welcoming approach with a much kinder delivery with an explanation of my options. Instead he was assumptive and told me that since the item I wanted was already on sale, I was not going to get any more discounts off of it. Again, I already knew that, but I did not want to explain to him because I already knew that I did not want to do business with him or this specific store. I will never come back to this particular location, I would rather go to Emeryville where I bought this particular instrument a few years ago because they were much friendlier, or I would even endure going into the city to visit that location. read more

This place smells ridiculously new. Every Guitar Center outside of this one usually has the low latency twinge of d00ds looking to be the next big thing. It's been a while since I've picked up any of my guitars and the co-worker who is a pretty damn good bass player, decided to look at a 5 String Ibanez bass. They've got some interesting clearance items, and I started checking out some of the Gibson SG's. Hmm even on clearance many of these are still in the 4 $$$$ range. Must rethink the wants. Jared from Guitar Center was ALL. OVER. IT. He made sure that I received the model of the guitar that I had won (a Mitchell MD100 -- it's so pretty!). He updated me about the shipping status. Not at all happy with the store or the personnel. I was shown some speakers and DJ Mixer - but when ready to buy, found out that they were out of almost everything that we saw on the floor. Finally bought a speaker, but after coming home found out that it was not working. When I called them the next day, they specifically told me that they had 3 new (un-opened) boxes. So drove 45 minutes to the store just to find that someone made a mistake and there was no new speaker in stock. And worst part was the manager, who was not at all interested in finding out who's fault it was - just telling me that ignore it, no one will take ownership of that mistake. 7 of items that I saw on the floor or that is needed for making up a DJ'ing system - they were all out of it. I just wonder, this is precisely the reason why stores are closing down and people are moving to amazon or other online stores. Sorry, will never shop at this store or any other Guitar Center. Some staff is great like Andrew (guitars) and the guy with the long hair that helps with drums (sorry, forgot his name). However, one of the store managers isn't. He's a weird combination of being short with you, but smiling the entire time and pushes you to sign up for a credit card (again while smiling). You'll probably spend the same amount at a local shop and likely get a better experience. They have an ok selection and are helpful with purchasing something online if the store doesn't carry it. read more

Amazon is usually my go to when it comes to making just about any purchase, but when it comes to very expensive musical items I tend to be a bit cautious. So I decided to head to the closest Guitar Center to pick up a Launchpad Pro. It was the same price as Amazon and I wouldn't need to wait 2 days to start playing with it. When I got there I was greeted by Robbie who showed me where the Launchpads were and then when it came time to purchase he went out of his way to see if there were any coupons that might save me some money. I was already set on paying the full price but when he found a coupon for 15% off I was floored. I never expected that to happen. If I would've bought it on Amazon I would have had to pay full price and wait 2 days for the delivery. This experience left such an impression on me and honestly made my day. It's experiences like this that remind me why sometimes its better to actually go to a store and have great human interactions. read more

GUITARRRRRRRRRR CENTAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUURRRRR I can't be the only one who remembers those ads. Right? Well, those ads adequately reflect the volume in the store. Which -- as someone else wrote -- is to be expected. After all, this is a place that has entire walls of electric guitars, a section devoted to DJ equipment, and functional keyboards easily within reach of a seven-year-old's itchy-to-bang-out-noise fingers. (NB that's the one down side. If you are really there to try out a keyboard, rather than screw around, it can be a challenge to *actually try an instrument out.* The guitar section is a little less crazy like that, actually.) I will cop to being more of a looky-loo than a constant customer -- although I have made purchases. Everyone here has always been helpful and friendly. No staff member has ever given me "that look." (If you've visited a record store and not been "cool enough" per the staff, you know the look of which I speak.) I feel reasonably sure that I'm getting straight answers, and that no one's laughing behind my back because I came in asking for something by description ("it looks like a...") rather than by make and model name. I'll say that my favorite room houses the acoustic instruments. Blessed quiet! And beautiful instruments. One day, I'll learn how to play them... Anyway. This Guitar Center is a fitting replacement for building space that used to house a Tower Records/Good Guys. Stop in, take a look at the gear for sale... it's a fun way to spend some time. read more

Music stores can be tricky because musicians are dynamic people and when they aren't playing music sometimes they are working at music stores. I didn't run in to any of the usual issues at this GS store. Every employee was helpful and friendly and I was asked no fewer than five times if I needed help with anything. No one sharked me and tried to push a sale and I found everything I was looking for. The lay out is open and it's easy to see where almost everything is directly when you walk in the store. The selection is incredible and like any music store, there are a number of kids playing drums and guitars but you'd have to be a special kind of picky to want a music shop to be silent. The manager of the store rung me up personally and we talked about gigging and home recording and when he took my information and asked if I wanted to be on the mailing list I said no and that was the end of it. He didn't try to push it on me. It was all a very pleasant experience. So I envite anyone who has had a bad experience with GS in the past to check this store out. You might be surprised. And if not, at least you can play around with all the goodies before you go online and buy them. read more

I think it depends on who you get here. I found Michael Griffin, he rocks. He did not try to up sell me or talk down to me (I often fear this when I am not shopping for something I know a lot about). Also, this was a last minute gift and I knew I was taking a risk with such a big purchase. Oh, I got a Seagull S6 acoustic for my husband, it's made in Canda so I was happy about that. Many of the guitars you will find are made in China which I was not going to buy. Maybe you can call ahead and ask for Mike / Michael since it seems like the sales people vary quite a lot. I did look around at local smaller businesses but as it goes there is not as much selection. I literally almost bought a different guitar at Heirz in Burlingame but I think it worked out better this way. Mike is cool and knows his guitars. He really helped me get to what I think is the best choice for a beginner guitarist. read more

I called 2 guitar centers and UPS and they could not give me any answers. When I called Julissa at guitar center in San Mateo she was extremely patient, compassionate and empathetic. She went above and beyond by calling the store that shipped the package and found the location along with the time it would be delivered. I am so thankful that Julissa was willing to do this for me. Bought a DW hi-hat stand today and the package was already open. Made a specific point of telling the guy helping me that I was concerned that the package was open and perhaps parts might be missing or it had been returned. Even went with a different model because I told him I wanted to play it tonight and wanted to make sure I could get it all set up. He assured me everything was set. Got it home and, of course, the INSTRUCTIONS are missing and one of the nuts will NOT loosen with a drum key. I have been going to Guitar Center on a weekly basis for at least a few years. We go there for music lessons and to purchase anything related to DJ equipment or a drum kit. The service we have received has been consistently good, with the exception of one employee. Robbie is EXCEPTIONAL !!! His knowledge of the products in the store and online is fluent. He even knows exactly what your particular drum kit needs and how to tailor it to your personal preferences. His advice has always proved beneficial and delivered with professionalism and confidence. On a more personal note, but very important, his patience with my young drummer is something I'm very thankful for. We are just ordinary customers, but many times I have said things like: "listen how Robbie talks to people on the phone", "ask Robbie which vinyl you should buy to hear the best drummers", "ask Robbie if there is a book about musician that might be interesting to a boy your age", "ask Robbie how you can fix your drum". We have never been disappointed, in fact we always leave feeling great. read more

Thanks for checking out my review! I purchased a Bass guitar and a bass amplifier, and the purchases were 2 months apart. The bass (Fender Jazz Bass) was pretty much a wall stock and was probably hanging on the wall for a couple of months. One thing I'm disappointed with is that they don't give the Fender hex tool or the manuals--as well as the free Fender Sticker--when you buy the guitar. However, I asked politely and they gave me the hex tool. My experience with the bass amplifier was satisfactory as well. I wanted to get some advice beforehand, and had a difficult time getting a hold of the manager Andre. The employee I talked to said he would tell Andre to call me, but I never got the call and had to call him instead. How embarrassing & unprofessional of them huh? This wasn't too bad of an experience but it can be quite annoying. Besides that, I stop by here almost every month to pick up strings or the occasional accessory. I'm closer to the SF store but the parking there is terrible so I always come down to the Hillsdale one. On any day I stop by, their staff is generally helpful and polite. So, if you are planning to do business with them, you may (or may not) need some extra patience. But overall, I believe they are fair game when it comes to doing business with them! read more

I was very happy with the customer service at Guitar Center. I was looking for some recording equipment, and I received a very in-depth explanation of potential setups from a staff member. While the prices on equipment were just okay, I try my best to keep in mind that they have an enormous storefront, and therefore relatively high overhead, and they can't necessarily compete with some guy with a warehouse in South Dakota who ships straight to consumers over the internet. This is a very cool store, and management has done a great job finding enthusiastic and helpful employees. read more

This place is great and the manager Dave is a good guy. I traded my guitar in for a Yamaha and he gave me a great deal. I am also taking lessons which were very reasonable. Yes the place is loud FOR GOD SAKE IT'S A MUSIC STORE people should stay out of this store if they are going to complain about the noise and people playing instruments. Anyway every employee I have been in contact with have been helpful, respectful and friendly. The prices are reasonable and the selection of merchandise are plentiful. If you decide to take guitar lessons I highly recommend Robert, his method of instruction is excellent and he is a very talented guitar player. Bottom line is the young and old can come into the Guitar Center and find any instrument they want along with having the sale clerks who are knowledgable and talented musicians. Dont go here, such a waste of your money. I walked in, having bought my first guitar and explained that i was looking for a case. The manager greeted me at the front and showed me where the "cases" were. Proceeds to pull the $190 one from the top. "This is what you're looking for" I ask if there are any other ones he says the only other one is $110, actually $130 i learn later. I grudgingly agree, his sales tactics are pretty forceful. Then I ask to see the capos, he tries to sell me the most expensive one they have saying "It will fit all your guitars".... like i only have 1 and said i wanted a basic capo. gives me the 20$ one, i kindof brush it of. Walk out of there pissed about how much I spent. Ended up returning both and buying the case and capo I actually wanted on amazon for half the price. They obviously took advantage of me being new to guitar, but I could tell it was waaay overpriced. So not cool Guitar Center, extremely overpriced and just inconsiderate. Such a great experience. Mike the Guitar Technician was friendly, extremely helpful, and did a thorough job. I bought my step-son a guitar for xmas and was unsure how to properly set-up and tune a Floyd Rose Tremolo equipped guitar. I called early in the morning today and spoke to a very friendly guy who said, that tuning and initial set-up like I was describing was not actually a billable type service they perform, but he was sure that if I just came in anytime, there would be several staff members who would tune a Floyd Rose for me. I did not purchase this guitar from them, so I was pretty shocked that he said that. I got together some serious xmas tip cash and headed down there at 4:30 pm today. The front counter guys were awesome and guided me to Mike the Repair Technician who was very busy replacing pick-ups on a Strat. He stopped in the middle of his job and said he'd be happy to set up my guitar. He painstakingly explained everything I needed to know about a double locking tremolo and step by step instructed how to tune it. He did this for no charge. I would have gladly paid a premium for this service as it was a skilled task, but he insisted. I'm not to be perceived as a cheapo, so I at least bought the tuner he used and got some pretty nice studio headphones as well. Mike is an asset and should be commended by management. Great Service as a whole as well, and I will certainly be back! read more

This guitar center is a fucking rip off to start off I wanted to buy an acoustic bass for around $200 and a gig bag for around 10 $so I found a dean acoustic bass for $220 and a gig bag for fucking $40 but they ended up charging me $300 for everything because of "tax" when I could've bought it online for $190 with free shipping and a seven dollar gig bag this place will just fuck you in the ass. read more
