I've been going to Michael for 8 years now and have always gotten my horns back in tip top. He's the best repairman in the country!!!

Great experience with this shop. The staff is always helpful, and Jeff has taken care of a few of…read moremy instruments now. He previously swapped out a bridge on a student instrument for me and checked over a 5-string pochette violin to inspect a potential rib crack and assess the setup. Recently, I brought in an unfinished 5-string violin project. He set the nut, bridge, and sound post properly, and his work made the whole project completely worth it.

The serial number places it from the Yamaha factory in Japan in the early 70s. They said that it would be inspected and I would get a phone call about an estimate. They did not review the horn with me. It should have been my first red flag. A few days later I get a call informing me that 'the instrument needs a complete overhaul and that when they put a light in it it was just full of leaks everywhere and would cost $1500 in labor and $200 in parts and that it wasn't worth it because of the value of the instrument' in an arrogant judgmental tone. When I picked up the horn, I was again told about leaks. This told me everything I needed to know because I too have put a light down my instrument to find the leaks and know exactly where a 1972 vintage alto that's never had it's pad replaced is leaking. And it wasn't were he was pointing to. I don't know who hurt you or which horn you're confusing mine with but I felt like I was being lied to. If you didn't want to do the work, simply let me know. Telling me my instrument isn't worth fixing is unacceptable. I determine the value of my horn, not you. And being rude about it is even more unacceptable. I guess with the closing of AG Music in Oakland and abundant USD student rentals, there's no space for the community musician in their shop. Be warned when you cross their handyman-grade aluminum threshold.

We always knew she had vocal talent, but she had no formal training and under Kate's direction she has flourished. Kate is extremely positive and nurturing which has really helped my daughter come out of her shell and take risks to audition, perform solos, etc. Kate is also a dream to deal with from a parent perspective - lessons are at your own home and she's very forgiving with our constantly changing schedule. I would highly recommend Kate for children and adults, regardless of your vocal aspirations.

I used to sing when in high school and college and my husband is also very musical, but we were struggling with working with our daughter on her vocals, as she just was not as open to feedback from us (I'm sure other parents can relate!), so we figured a teacher would be better. Our daughter immediately clicked with Kate and just LOVED working with her from the start. Kate has helped her make incredible strides in her vocal ability over the last year, bringing her true voice out! In fact, she just finished her performance as one of the leads in the school musical Once on This Island (see photo posted by Kate), and I'm certain that her work with Kate made a big difference! Kate has also acted as a life coach (my daughter's description, not mine!) as she's helped her work through times when she was lacking confidence or second guessing herself in her song selections. Not only is Kate a fantastic vocals teacher, but she's also a wonderful person that we have all come to adore and consider a friend! I can't recommend her enough.

I actually had a 1 star experience, walking out thinking, "This store is failing, is going to die,…read moreand I know why," but I am giving 3 stars because I want little brick and mortar music stores to survive, especially in places where they are automatically going to have a hard time doing so. I walked in with cash in my pocket, hoping to be surprised and be forced to buy a guitar I didn't expect to run into, as I do whenever I'm in a new or unfamiliar place against my will, as on this day. As I walked in the door, which I was glad to find open during business hours (often these days, doors aren't, especially with guitar and music stores), and was one of 3 customers in the store, the other two already inside, far from the solitary visible employee, who never looked up from the computer or spoke to me until I asked him two guitars on the third row of wall guitars up, that I didn't know by sight, to ask what they were. Instead of answering, he asked me if I was going to buy anything. How do I know if I'm going to buy anything, when I'm asking you what I'm looking at, when you ask me that? I'm going to say this was a "socially awkward person" issue, but that's not going to make me ever come back to this store. Someone at this store does not understand that once you alienate a customer who is apt to return if they feel good about you, you're never going to see that person again. But I hope you all survive. You are going to have to change the way you view and treat people walking in off the street to do that, otherwise why are you paying overhead to have a brick and mortar store just to make people feel unwelcome and suspect, when they walk in. I thought, walking out, this place is doomed, and maybe that's for the best, because the model of personal conduct shouldn't survive. I felt disliked, and unwelcome for no reason, other than that I must be stupid for walking through the door. It seems impossible this is not a common experience. "Are you going to buy something?" What kind of person responds with that when a customer asks what a retail item is (because they are trying to find out whether it's something they would want to buy).
