The Gulf Coast Humane Society (GCHS) is a shining beacon of hope for Corpus' homeless pet population. Without it, there would be a many stray cat and dog without any chance of going on to have a better quality of life. Firstly, the Humane Society: The Humane Society is a non-profit organization with a mission of helping neglected and abused animals. They have a good cause, and for that, I support them as a whole. I have looked into their mission, and they are pretty straightforward, without any weird ideological angle or catch. I am very biased towards the Humane Society, as that is where I adopted my household firstborn, Pinto (my English/American Bulldog / Dogue De Bordeaux mix). I will give you some backstory on him, just to give you an idea of the lengths they will go to for their rescues. Pinto was found at about 10 weeks of age by a construction worker in Southeast Houston. He was emaciated, worm-riddled and covered with mange. The kindhearted man brought him to the Houston Humane Society, where they diligently treated his skin condition, and brought him to great health. Now, the GCHS is just as great a branch as any Humane Society location. However, you must understand that Corpus has a real problem with neglected, homeless, and roaming pets. Not that this is a problem exclusive to this city, but if you lived here, you would notice that it is pronounced. There are many ways to support the Humane Society. You can volunteer, donate pet food (try to make sure it is "grain free" please) or blankets to your local one, or you can also donate directly to them. They make it very easy to setup one-time or recurring donations directly from your bank account if you wish to do that. It is the time of year to be thoughtful and considerate. Perhaps you want to give to a good cause. This would be one of them, IMO. Also, if you are in the market for a new companion, consider adopting one from here. Adopt, don't shop! read more

This is by far one of the nicest Humane Societies I've seen. They have done a wonderful job with their "tropical oasis" park and pool area. A wonderful effort to minimize shelter stress. The outdoor runs are big and well maintained. Good job. read more

I got my cat microchipped for FREE here on valentines day! They had a free microchip drive thru for the first 100 pets! It was quite a wait despite being early :( There was maybe 10? cars ahead of us and we waited for an hour.... The staff were so nice, welcoming & helpful and I appreciated their service!! Now the reason why I didn't give 5 stars was because I know someone who wanted to get in contact with GCHS and have them take in a stray cat he found and they said they didn't have room and that was it. I 100% understand there is a capacity limit but I feel like they could have given some other resources and shelters for this stray cat or some guidance to this good samaritan but no - they didn't provide any other help than "yeah no we don't got room" :( *on a brighter not tho: he decided to keep the stray!* Last note: kittens/young cats get adopted SUPER QUICK HERE!!! My bf & I were considering getting a young cat here and after we decided to adopt him after a few days that cat was GONE LOL read more

Very caring staff to surrenders and make sure the animals are well cared for. Had 2 strays at my place of business for a few months. I tried other shelters but everyone was full, I tried GCHS again and was able to get the dogs taken in. It did cost me money but well worth it knowing the dogs would get the care they needed. read more

This is the second time I have found an animal running through the streets. Out of the goodness of my heart I picked them up and brought them to the GCHS. Both times I was told I would need to " make a reservation." But of course, they aren't available on the weekend. I was then told " I'm out of luck , and good luck." How is it that you can be a humane society where you " care" about the humane treatment of animals but you expect people who find these animals to then keep them for multiple days. It sounds like you've set a system up to discourage the good people in this world and allow the animals to fend for themselves . That's the truth . And it's disgusting. read more

All of the staff my child and I spoke with were very friendly and helpful. The facility was very nice and the animals seemed to be taken care of very well. We saw one of the dogs being bathed and several of the other workers outside giving the animals love outside of their kennels. My child is very picky about the pet she wants and we didn't go home with a pet yet but we will definitely go back to look again. read more

My husband and I volunteered here over the summer. It is very easy to get started after orientation. They make it super easy to come when you can and walk dogs. We enjoyed volunteering here. However, we wanted to help with clinic. We were asked to come in at noon and we stood around waiting for the clinic coordinator to come in for over an hour. Then they stuck us in a room with the parvo puppies to help socialize them by ourselves. We noticed over 30 ticks on the walls, the dogs, and some on my husband. The coordinator finally showed up and introduced herself then left us alone again. We were not sure what to do and had to tell a worker about the ticks then waited another hour until everyone showed up again. Then we walked two dogs and got asked to scrub kennels. We were told the worker would come help us but she never did. We were asked to commit to Monday and Friday for 4 hours and didn't feel like this was a good place for us. It really disappointed me because I am in school to become a vet tech and the clinic experience would have been amazing. We promptly went back to just walking kennel dogs and absolutely love it. I think Melissa is a wonderful coordinator, I think Yvonne needs a lot of guidance and mentoring from Melissa if she wants people to volunteer under her. Other than clinic being disorganized for volunteers, we loved our time there. read more

The Staff truly care about the animals and want the best homes for them. The dogs and cats are kept in clean kennels and exercised a lot. The medical care is great for these animals. One of the best places to adopt an animal. read more

14 years ago (this coming December) I adopted a 4 month old kitten from the Gulf Coast Humane Society. It was about 6:00 PM when I walk into the room all cats were asleep except him. I was looking around when I notice him sticking his paw out of his cage moving it like making the sign of "come here"!, that was it, I said "I will take that one"! At the time of the adoption I was notified he had some kind of problem with his pelvis and if I wanted to exchange him for another cat, I could. I did not have the heart to send him back to his cage. So I decided to give the little guy a chance and let me tell you, I don't regret it, not even for a minute. He is so much more than a pet, he is my best friend! When the time comes for his departure (which I hope wont be for a long time) I will go back there to give another kitty a chance for a better life. The people here at Gulf Coast Humane Society have only been thoughtful and helpful in my dealings with them. Their job has to tug at their hearts daily. People in Corpus Christi need to be aware that dogs outside in our heat is NOT a good idea. Plus, dogs dig out and sometimes get hit by cars. A pet needs to be loved just like a member of your family....do not think your family members would like to be outdoors all the time here in this city. SO,...think before you get a pet, be willing to spay/neuter them to keep them healthier. If you can share your love and be a responsible owner, you will be rewarded with unconditional love. We found a stray and couldn't find anyone to adopt her on our own. We took her to the GCHS and they said they were too full to take her. I can understand being full but this isn't my dog. When I asked what we were supposed to do with her they suggested Animal Control. Are you kidding me? These are supposed to be compassionate animal lovers. They didn't care what happened to this homeless puppy and made no other suggestions. It was obvious they just wanted to lock the doors and go home for the day. Not impressed!!! read more

They save animals from being euthanized at animal control. Yes, they are very demanding about the homes the animals are going to but they do this to protect the animal from being abused or dumped if things do not work out. We adopted a cat years ago and I felt it was tougher than adopting a child but I realize they want a good home for the pets. read more

There was a woman with long curly red hair who was completely rude. I had to drop off a couple dogs last night because Things were getting crazy at my house I have three of my own animals. I couldn't house two big dogs and I don't have a proper yard for them. I wanted to come in today to visit them because I missed them. I had a female puppy for about a week that I took car of. I showed everyone I knew to see if anyone wanted her and they posted on Facebook. No responses well an adult male pitbull showed up the other day, a real sweetheart and clearly belonged to someone. He is not fixed and had a blue color with silver dog bones on it. And kind of a bad leg he didn't limp at first but the second day it progressed I knew he needed help and I just don't have the resources. When I showed up at the GCHS the dogs were still in the kennels outside. I went in and said that they were dropped off and I wanted to see them. The redheaded girl asked, "well how do you know they were dropped off?" and I told her I dropped them off and told her all the reasons I couldn't keep them anymore. Then, in another rude tone she says, "well you just dumped them here, there out there still because they are probably trying to find space for them, this isn't a dumping site." I was so pissed and I told her. "Don't make me feel like shit, this is a home for animals, your suppose to find them homes, and I don't have the proper space for them." And I demanded for the puppy back. She just nods and looked all stupid while she tried to figure something out. She walks out of the room I fill out some paper work(info about the puppy) , I donate my money to some other lady. And there was a helpful man that told me the vet has looked at them but was busy with a cat that was also "dumped" that was in bad shape. And I understood and I told him the pitbull has a bad leg that he needed to be looked at, no wounds or signs of external injuries but I wanted the puppy back and I'll find a home for her myself. He understood and talked to some people and he said I could take her. Took my name and number down and informed me about the cattery that does cheap spay/neutering. I will never volunteer for this shelter. I will never bring another stray here again. Nor recommend it for any other reasons. I used to give this place such praise for helping animals. But when other people look to them for help with strays they clearly fall short. I still donated my money because no matter how rude they are its about the animals and thats all I care about. read more

I've got 4 dogs from this place, and my experience was great! I read some of the other reviews and think a lot of the bad reviews must be people full of shit lol no complaints here all 4 dogs are doing great and the people were very nice and professional. read more
