We ordered a refrigerator and had it installed. It had a water/ice option. Pros: They had stock and were able to deliver in a reasonable timeframe. Everyone we dealt with was pleasant. Pricing was along the lines of other stores but included delivery, install and removal of the old unit. The installers were considerate about not banging doorways etc on the way in and out. Cons: I had asked the salesman if the temperature displayed was the set point or actual temperature in the unit. I was told it did both. It does not. If you don't know the answer, say so, don't just say what you think the customer wants to hear. It is important to do a thorough install thus reinforcing the reason to shop there verses a big box store. This would include removing every bit of tape and packaging. Run water thru the line until it ran clear (flushing the carbon thru the line). Finally I would lower the little feet at the front so the refrigerator didn't roll when the homeowner opened the freezer. None of these things were done but should have been. The install is a lasting reminder of the purchase process and is probably the most important step! read more

If you want to get lied to, go to Gulgren's Appliance. Once they get your order and deposit money, they do not care if you are happy or not. Spent almost $9000 total with them and on delivery day of a fridge we ordered in October, I was bullied by Mike Gulgren himself. No effort was made to fulfill lame promises made by the salesman, Gary Dinelli. Gary said what we wanted to hear on October 5, 2020 just to make the sale. What Mike does not know is that he left a handwritten. note behind that showed he never intended to do what we were promised originally. Mike Gulgren also seems to have a problem dealing with women as proven by some of the other reviews on Yelp. I wish I had read these reviews before we ever walked into their store. Hopefully you will not make the same mistake. Go to a big box dealer instead. read more

Hmmm. I really want to support local businesses. Probably more than most. Which is why I shop at places like this. I've bought several things from Gulgren's over the years. The last two times they have quoted things really high -- in fact so high they were well over MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price: The inflated price manufacturers set so that stores can offer the product at a "discount" or on "sale"). Of course they're willing to negotiate a little. The guy there begrudgingly said he could reduce his price to MSRP. What kind of a deal is that? I bought it anyway because I needed that particular item and it's not carried in chain stores. But it left me feeling like I didn't get a deal. And the warm fuzzy feeling of supporting a local store just isn't enough for me. I want to save some cash too. I walk in there and I feel like I shouldn't be there - like maybe they deal with contractors and homebuilders and aren't really set up for an individual. Do NOT use this company for service or quite frankly anything else. Had them come out to service my 12 year old Maytag washer that was continuously showing the same error messages. The service person couldn't find anything wrong with the washer and told me what he thought it "might be". I was told upfront what the service call would cost and what the diagnostic charge would be. All said and done, I have no problem paying the service call charge ($106 just to show up) but a diagnostic charge for telling me "what it might be" is ridiculous. I asked for my diagnostic charge to be refunded which Lexie told me she didn't have the authority to do but would have the service manager/part owner call me to discuss. The tone of her voice indicated that she would give him the message but don't expect a response which is what I got....no response. He got his money and doesn't care about what people think. Bad business philosophy and they won't see any future business from me. Remember Gulgren Appliance, when people have a good experience, they tell 3 to 4 people. I also had a similar experience only over the phone with Gulgren's. They are listed as one of only three Danby Portable air conditioner service shops in the Northwest suburbs. When I called them last year to ask about replacing a water tank on the unit that was leaking the seemed annoyed by my call. I pushed the service man a little to see if he could get me a part or tell me why the unit might be leaking water onto my floor. He said "we don't service those things any more" That was the end of our conversation. I called Danby and told them that they should remove Gulgrens from their list of shops. Our dryer broke and we had watched some troubleshooting videos online and decided it was probably the belt. My local Ace Hardware referred me to Gulgren's to buy the part. Asked the guy at the counter about purchasing the part and he started asking a lot of questions about what the dryer was doing and proceeded to tell me it was no way that it was just the belt. He quoted me for a new motor at over $200 and then starting showing me brand new dryers at over $600. He basically refused to sell me the part because he 'was positive it wasn't what I needed'. Frustrated and second guessing myself, I went home and had my husband take the dryer apart to be sure... and guess what.... it was in fact just the belt. I ordered the part online for $30 and dryer was fixed. What a crock! Can't believe this guy tried to sell me a brand new dryer when I came in asking for a belt. I think he assumed because I was female that I couldn't possibly know what I was doing! Women beware! Do not let them scam you into buying more than you need. Trust your gut! read more

If there was an option to give zero stars that would be my rating. My mom had ordered 2,400 worth of appliances from this business and she had a gentleman come to install in her kitchen. The guy (Fernando) was extremely unprofessional and hostile in my mother's house. He stood on his step stool to install the microwave and hit his head on the fan. The fan was already running when he started his work. He got so irate and started throwing items in her kitchen, slamming stuff on her counter...he told my mom to get out of her own kitchen....my mom felt so uncomfortable and intimidated in her own home she called the business while the worker was in the house to report his behavior. He finished the job and left. I called the store manager, Mike, to follow up on this and he of course, took his employers side. Saying it's hearsay. My mom is the sweetest woman and she had to deal with this in her own home and management does absolutely nothing. Unbelievable. He just kept staring how wonderful Fernando is. As a renter in Crystal Lake, my landlord ordered service on a Electric Stove/Oven purchased thru Gulgren's a few years back, as the Oven Door never closed completely. Landlord called and ordered service to tighten up hinges. Greg the service manager sends out Jose and apprentice to fix. They knock on door, let them in and lead them to the kitchen. My office desk is 10' from the Oven. I'm listening as they fumble thru the repair only to hear them hammering on the door. Before they even finish, I hear them call the Landlord and ask for payment to replace 2 hinges. $289.00 !!! She paid thinking they were done. They replaced the old hinges with 2 new hinges.They called to me to say they were done. I inspected their work and mentioned that one Hinge was not working. Jose said "it is what it is". I said," it's worse than when you started". I also said it was bad business to ask for payment before you even completed the work. I asked Jose to bring back his boss when he comes back with a new replacement hinge. Head down they walk out. Jose calls a few days later and says he will be there between 9-11. Upon arrival, without Gutless Greg, they start in again with hammering, while I'm on the phone. I'm thinking something is not right with this repair. 10 minutes after they arrive, their packing up and leaving. After a quick look the door seemed to be closer to the frame. They left and quickly. After my call, I checked the operation and now the door is out of kilter. I measure the hinges and one hinge shows exposure of 2" out from frame and the other hing shows 1-7/8" out from frame. The land lord just happened to call Gulgren's that same day prior to their arrival,to get a quote on a stackable Oven. A rep named Mike called me to stop out and estimate. Mike does measurement and I ask him what he thinks about the discrepancy in the hinges. I hand him a tape measurer and he agrees with my assessment.Out of whack! Poor function. He agreed! He said he would go back and tell Greg who was head of service. What a mistake! Greg calls me back and made every excuse in the book including being very positive the previous owner was a drunk and they fell on the door!!! He mentioned their name, and when I corrected him and told him that was not the renter, he lost it and said there was nothing more he could do. "it is what it is". He also said that I wasn't even there! I told him to bring back Jose and have Jose tell Greg , in front of me, that I wasn't there. Then he hung up on me! Common theme among Yelp Review. Wanted to help out a local business, warning signs there but still proceeded with the sale. Our first set of purchases was a range and over the range microwave. We had issues with the range and called service for warranty work. We were told that we lived too far away and could we do some trouble shooting over the phone. I'm not totally happy with this but I get it. Next set of purchases a year later: washer, dryer, and dishwasher. Shortly after our appliances were delivered the dishwasher stopped working. Again, got the same response that we were too far away, could we do some troubleshooting prior to them coming out. My husband did as told, however the service guy Greg, did not believe what my husband was telling him. They send out a service guy finally and low and behold we are correct in what we are telling them and there is a faulty part that needs to be replaced. Now (04/29/2019), this past week my dryer is making this clunking noise and I call to have them fix it. Well get a call today 04/30/2019 that the dryer is out of warranty as of 04/22/2019 and they will not cover any work. Greg tells me yet again that we are too far away, could I record the sound and call him back. I am extremely frustrated as initially I went to buy a different brand and totally willing to go to a big box but my husband wanted to support local business. Salesman tells me that the brand we were looking at is difficult to get parts for and sold us on a GE. So, I say to Greg, I will just call local repair company (Huntington Repair) as it is no longer warranty and we're too far. Well he tells me that said company is out of business. I get off the phone with Greg and call said company because I thought it odd that I did not hear they went out of business. Well they are not out of business and the lady that answered there advised me that they do not do warranty work but that I should call GE directly that they would do more for me than dealer. I called GE and they are covering the work under warranty. Call back to tell Greg that a.) GE will fix problem b.) That Huntington is not out of business c. that they had no problem taking my money when I lived too far. Of course Greg is not available so I tell lady that answered my message for Greg and stated that it is disheartening to have the experience we did when we wanted to support local business. She said she will forward to Greg and Mike. To which I replied the same Greg that I spoke too. Yep, you guessed it, Greg is one of the owners. Basically, I got my response of their customer care right there. I told her no need to forward because he does not care since he is the one that delivered the poor service. Happy to say that GE made the situation right, too bad Gulgren failed me three times...shame on me for going back. read more

Our dryer igniter died just this morning, so my wife looked around for a provider of parts, found Gulgren's website, good price ($20.14), so she called to reserve the part. She said when she called the price quoted over the phone was much higher in the store ($39.00). When she questioned it they referenced stocking fees, and indicated that they don't control the web price. They mentioned that they wouldn't match either , however, they said that when she came in they could work with her on the price when she arrived. When she showed up they only discounted it $9. Still a $10 difference. If we had more appliance parts stores in our area we would have gone elsewhere - (buyer beware). read more

I called Gulgren to diagnose problems and repair a Viking refrigerator in which ice was forming in the bottom freezer and the clock/timer on a Viking wall oven. I was able to make an appointment for the next day. The repairman arrived within the timeframe he'd given. Upon arrival, he quickly diagnosed the clock/timer problem and advised me how to remedy the oven and waited to make sure it worked. He diagnosed the icing problem and installed a part that corrected the problem and so no additional service call was required. I was very impressed with the service. read more

Ended up not needing part, never even attached it to the oven and they refused to accept the return. Tried to talk it out as I wasn't informed at the time of sale and they would not hear a word of it. So it wasn't just that they didn't communicate their sales policy, it was their overall unhelpful and rude attitude in addressing my concerns. Washing machine was moving when did small loads. Repair man charged $104 to tell me bearing was shot. Took cover off and said he balanced it. No need for immediate replacement it still worked, just loud. After he left tried to do large load. Machine jumped around and shook, rattled and was way louder than before he worked on it. My husband said the repairman stripped screw holding cover on. Now I need replacement quickly. Small, medium and large loads are all bad. Told me $40 of the cost would come off a new machine if purchased from them. I don't think so! read more

Poor attitude and customer service toward my elderly parents when they called to have a range repaired. Cost them 98.00 and.no repair was made after 2 trips, they were told different parts and more expense was required. then I called as my 87 yo mother was very upset, she still cooks every meal. I was told they would give me a $20 credit toward. A stove when I pushed, if we bought one from them ,again not real happy, . One of his comments was hes "a small business and needs to make money somehow" but figured oh well at least they're not out the entire 100 so we headed out to the store today to see what they had, he said that they could have something with prices starting at $550., nothing we could see in the store on display was even close to 550 When we got to the store and walked in no one acknowledged us , the guy at the desk barely raised his head and we were barely acknowledged, he appeared to be doing some paperwork, so we walked around for a little while and then I asked for help after some time, he said "just a minute", it seemed he was too busy to bother with us, no one else bothered to speak with us either, so after about 10 minutes we left , there were several other heads in the office you can see in the back open area, and they didn't look up or acknowledge our presence either. I'm all for supporting local small business but they need to provide quality, honest customer service first, and competitive pricing we bought a stove at Menards for $404 on sale. So the first 98 was for supporting them I guess? It did not pay for any parts, only service fees. I'm guessing this will be the last donation my family will make to their small business. read more

I had called Gulgren to fix my dishwasher and before I could even say anything the guy on the phone was quick to point out it was going to be a $45 driver/road fee and another $65 dollar fee, I thought OK it will be $100 dollars but it will be fixed. The tech comes out and within two minutes says the motor is shot ( BTW I was in my office and on the phone to come out and find him reading the paper that was sitting on my table) and will need to order the new motor. He writes the quote that included ANOTHER $45 road Fee ANOTHER $65 tech/hour fee and the $80 dollar part. I could not believe that they would try to charge me again after their two minute diagnosis. I tried calling to see if they could work out a deal since it was so quick to diagnosis and they said no that is our policy.I took my business to another local company that was great. read more

Dean & I needed to purchase a new washer. We decided to shop local so we went to Gulgrens in Crystal Lake, IL. We purchased our washer on the 29th of June, the $$ was taken out of our account the next day. They said they would call us to set up delivery because they didn't have any models in their store, made sense. So we waited for the call and waited and waited. Finally after 2 1/2 weeks Dean called them but our salesman wasn't in and no one else there could/would help him so he had to leave a message, really? When the salesman returned the call Dean was unavailable so the salesman left a message, "hey Dean just returning your call, what's up", really? Nothing about our washer. So we waited some more for some kind of info as to when we would get our washer delivered. Another week passes by and Dean has to call again because no one from Gulgrens has called us, mind you they have had our $$ for over 3 weeks. So when he actually talks to our salesman he is told they no longer have the model we purchased, over sold. What... You have got to be kidding me! And NO apology! We are told we can have the floor model of the washer that is a step down from the one we bought, I don't think so..... So then he says we can pay more $$ for one that is a step up. Dean said no we want the one we paid for so the salesman proceeds to make Dean feel like we are a bother and says he will have to call around to find one, like shame on us for making him work. So we come to the end of last week and get a call that it is in and set delivery up for today August 2, 2017, 8am. Today, 8 am rolls by and no washer, no call. 9:30am they call, again NO apology, just said yeah change of schedule we'll be there somewhere between 12pm & 2pm. Dean kept his cool, I would not have! Dean told them he couldn't guarantee he'd be there when they come because he had other plans. They did show up around 1pm, NO apology, again. We stayed local to help the area but it was a big mistake. Gulgrens does not care for their customer. They are one of the worst customer service business we have used. You all know the amount of years Dean & I have working in retail, so we know how a customer should be properly treated. What definitely should have happened would be an apology for selling us a washer they couldn't get, never called to keep us informed, then changed delivery without speaking to us first and NEVER one apology. Then they should have adjusted the price or offered some other compensation for all the hassle and time. We are letting all our, friends, neighbors, families, folks we work with and anyone else we come in contact with to NOT shop at Gulgrens. Went to Gulgren's to purchase a washer/dryer pair with the hope of supporting local businesses. Gary was professional enough during the sales presentation and we subsequently departed for more product study after our visit. Only after further investigation on our own did we realize Gary was attempting to sell us a washer which was no longer being manufactured!! This of course is allowed by any merchant however, the associated disclosure above should not be revealed by the customer to the merchant! Both Gary and Mike at a subsequent date just stated that manufacturers are always changing models!! In spite of this misstep we proceeded with a purchase. A week after the purchase date we had to call Gulgren's asking about a delivery date. No call to us had occurred at all about this. Gary was not able to offer a delivery date at this point as well. Today, twelve days after the original purchase we initiated another call requesting delivery date status and with no return call back for three hours from this call, we proceeded to the store and requested a full refund for this entire debacle and it was issued. Not quite sure what is happening internally in this store but when most merchants today issue customers computer produced order/purchase documents and Gulgren's still uses carbon copy manual receipts, maybe there might be a causal relationship in this occurrence. read more

Ordered and paid for a refrigerator on Friday morning, as ours died while we were out of town. Told Gulgren we needed it asap. A week later they call to say fridge is to be installed. Crew of two arrives at 11:00 am. Adam is surly, insulting, negative and really unpleasant. Ricky is delightful and helpful, wanting to do a good job. After two hours listening to Adam insult our home, our door sizes, having him call the homeowner a PITA, and refusing to level the 5 doors and drawers properly, stating the drawers don't have adjustments on them, Ricky, who was trying very hard to be helpful, called in the boss. Two and a half hours later Mike arrived and leveled all the doors and drawers in about 10 minutes time. When we notified him how poorly Adam behaved he defended him stating it was "hard to get good help." OK fine, you want to retain help that drives customers away, fine with us. This is the second time we have ordered and needed an appliance in a hurry only to be put off, we were not told the truth about possible rebates and then had to deal with this surly individual at installation. High praises to Ricky, who tried very hard to keep things positive and to do a great job. As for the rest, we will no longer put ourselves in the position of working with these people. We'll go to ABT instead, where installation is timely, courteous and done correctly without complaints. Customer lost. read more

Outstanding service. We called for dishwasher repair. Repairman came out, replaced a part, and said we were good to go. One week later same problem. Called again, service came out again, replaced another part, good to go. 2 weeks later, same problem. Now this was an intermittent problem, and it is hard to ensure the repair has worked because you need to run a full cycle in order to determine whether the issue has returned. Gulgren then replaced the entire board, which still did not fix the problem. I felt bad for the service manager as they had come out quickly to repair, but the problem was still intermittent. After 3 service calls with 3 different parts replaced (seems it might have been an electronic problem), Gulgren replaced our dishwasher. Each service call the repair person clearly articulated what was happening, what the attempted repair was, and continued to keep their manager in the loop. We had tremendous communication, and timely response, and now have a dishwasher that works!!! Yay!!!! We will continue to patronize this business as they very clearly stood behind their work, and provided continuous outstanding service. About 9 years ago they fixed a Zenith console TV and were honest, and I thought the price was very fair and a lot better than buying a new one. Because of this experience I went back to Gulgren's to buy an over the range microwave and have it installed. After making the purchase I went home and started checking prices. I know it was a little late (but I trusted the local store) and to my surprise I had paid way over the MSRP. Since nothing had been installed yet I called and they were willing to refund the overpayment, but the whole experience really was unsettling.
