Kids loving their hot fudge Sunday
    Jennifer B.

We were traveling from Florida back home and found this restaurant. This is everything and more that southern cooking and hospitality should be. This is a community oriented restaurant where you see locals not only dining, but also exchanging kindness and conversation. Our family was warmly welcomed and we split up between 2 booths so we could fit our party of 6. Kids loved having their own table! I cannot express enough how warm the atmosphere was. So many smiles and "hellos"...we had a conversation with the nicest couple at the booth next to is as well. My southern roots could not get enough! I ordered fried flounder and got collards and mashed potatoes with it. It was perfect down to the last bite! My son had bbq with slaw and beans - he said he had never had better bbq. Clean plate club! My husband had bacon cheese fries to start with and they were crinkle cut, fried crispy, and covered with real cheddar and crispy bacon. With ranch as a dipper, they were perfect! His main was chicken pie- open faced with the a generous amount of white meat, chopped chicken. The chicken was served the pot pie sauce / gravy with bits of crust throughout. It was so tasty! No veggies inside, which was new for us, but not a negative. He had Mac and cheese with his and it was gooey and perfect! Kids had hot dog and grilled cheese and ate every bite. My other child had fried chicken and kept saying, "mom...this is the best chicken! You should try it! I wish we lived here so we could come every day!". He asked if I would go o line and give Gunther's a 5 star review to share just how great it was! So, here I am! The kids had hot fudge cake too - it was huge! I recommend sharing unless you're still just super hungry after you have a meal there. The sweet tea was like my granny made and I wish I had a gallon to take back home. We will be back again and look forward to it. From the kindness to the food, everything was perfect. In a day and age where we are feeling disconnected and tethered to social media, worried about where we are going as a country, and generally stressed, Gunther's is where you can sit and enjoy and just be present. Share a meal, a conversation with family or a stranger, and take in a beautiful and more gentle pace.

    Bacon cheeseburger and onion rings

This is a popular local place and has solid food. I would rate the burgers three stars, but onion rings and fried okra were four stars. Lots of trucks and lots of locals. They have a pretty extensive specials menu, including barbecue pork, barbecue, chicken, pork, chops, lasagna, chicken livers, shrimp, and catfish. Also extensive sides: mashed potatoes, sweet, potato, casual, potato salad, broccoli, casserole, slaw, collard greens, cucumber, salad, Black Eyed Peas, beets, squash, fried, rice, peaches, and cottage cheese. Whew! If you're in the area and need a meal, it's a good place to stop.

    Blueberry Lemon Cookie...YUM!

Love this locals diner spot! We eat here each time we are here camping at Linney's Mill. Home cooked choices like veggies that aren't all fried. Friendly service. The 8 oz burgers are good. I get the one with pimento cheese and bacon.

Gunters Family Kitchen is Absolutely !!! Everyone always gives you a warm welcome soon as you walk in. Food is Absolutely delicious I always make a point stopping in whenever I'm passing thru. Most importantly, it's always a pleasure sitting at the counter chatting with all the locals. You be surprised some recognize ya being a regular stopping thru at times.

True indication of the sanitation of those place. Complacency prevails!!

This place is just damn filthy. Long haired women working the kitchen with no hair nets. Nothing homemade it appears, food is from Sysco I guess. Dump it from the prepackaged plastic bag, heat and serve. And they don't even keep the dang door clean!!! If the door looks like that, i can't imagine what the kitchen looks like! Just gross! I'm glad I went, cause I ain't going back!

Fifteen minute wait on a Sunday morning. Great homemade biscuits! Server was very nice. The bathrooms could be cleaner.

Great Country Diner…read more Located a bit off of I-77 on Hwy 901 West is Chip's Cafe. A favorite with locals and now one of my favorites. Stopped in because someone had recommeded Chip's because of the great Hush Puppies. Without anymore detail, you think Hush Puppies in the areas and you are talking about either a Seafood Restaurant or a Bar-B-Que joint. Turns out Chip;s is much more than that. The special for the night was Salt and Pepper Catfish so we both decided to give it a try. She ordered it along with rice and grave and another side of fresh slaw. I had potato salad and okra with mine. She had the Hush Puppies and I had Texas Toast. Out of this world. The Catfish was some of the best I have ever had. Large, moist, flaky, flavorful filets that melt in your mouth. Forgo the tartar sauce and just go with lemon and it's great. Potato salad is very good but could use just a hint of more mustard in the dressing. Service is great. Very friendly and helpful and they did a great job. As for atmosphere, what can I say. It's a country diner where everyone is welcolm and everyone feels instantly at home. Highly recommend for local and travelers but be aware, it's a little over a mile off of I-77 westbound but well worth the trip. Will be back

Damascus Diner -- Damascus, VA…read more I'll admit it--I'm not usually a diner person, and I actually debated driving back to Abingdon for breakfast. But we were staying in a cabin along the Virginia Creeper Trail, and walking the trail into town for a traditional Southern breakfast sounded like the more authentic mountain-town experience. I'm so glad we did. The portions were huge, the prices were incredibly reasonable, and everything we tried was good. My husband ordered "The Hog"--2 eggs, country potatoes, sausage, bacon and pork loin. The sausage was his favorite of the meats. I had the Mt. Rogers with 3 eggs, hash brown casserole, and upgraded to the 8-oz sirloin. Both meals came with toast or a biscuit, grits, and peppered sausage gravy. They were out of biscuits, so we had white and sourdough toast instead, and it was all good. The food was hearty, traditional, and exactly what I was craving. But what really made the experience was the Southern hospitality. The young woman serving and the host were both so kind and cheerful. Sometimes the best travel experiences aren't the trendy places--they're the local spots where you walk in hungry, leave completely stuffed, and feel genuinely welcomed. Damascus Diner was one of those places.
