Feeling very disappointed in Gurney's right now. Weeks ago, I ordered a Carmine Jewel dwarf cherry tree from you. I had the option of ordering from you or several other nurseries and chose you because you have such a good reputation (in spite of your prices being higher than elsewhere). My ship date kept getting pushed back, so I reached out to your customer service to find out whether or not I was actually going to receive the tree (since I had already received the Romeo dwarf cherry I ordered). Later that day, I checked my order status again and the Carmine Jewel was no longer showing on the "to be shipped" list (although the invoice total remained the same). After multiple attempts to reach your customers service, I finally received a response to my emails today letting me know that they are out of stock and I won't be receiving my tree. Had someone let me know sooner, I could have tried to order from somewhere else, but now everyone else is out of stock too. If my order was accepted weeks ago and the only reason it hadn't shipped yet was my planting zone, it seems incredibly unfair that you would sell a tree that I already purchased. I guess northern buyers need to be aware that with our planting dates so late in the spring, we may or may not receive the plants we order from Gurney's. EDIT: I just spent time reading post after post after post from other frustrated Gurney's customers. What happened to this company? My grandmother and mother and aunt all swore by them. Theya lways said their seeds were the best around and that they were an honest company. My mom is the reason that I chose to buy my cherry trees from Gurney's rather than one of the many cheaper places. When I told her the price difference, her response was "it will be worth it when you have a successful planting and don't waste a year or two growing something that won't live or won't produce." Well, I've wasted a year anyway and have no chance of having success since I didn't even receive the dang plant I ordered. I ordered 5 different bare root plants in February for delivery in April and May. I April, I received an email that 2 were out of stock. I received a refund for 1. I called customer service and it was corrected. 2 weeks later I received another email that 2 of the other plants were out of stock. I did not receive a refund. Customer Service said that email was incorrect and that I would be getting those plants in May. In May, I received notice that one of the plants was actually out of stock, and that I would be receiving 2 plants mid-May. Later in May I then received a refund for 1 plant, and I received 1 plant that was clearly dead and was clearly NOT an Iris as expected. I will not order from Gurneys again. I have also tried to unsubscibe from their daily emails with no luck. read more

I decided to give this nursery a chance since they are only 2hrs from me. They forgot to mail one onion set and they sent them after a call. However, of the asparagus, peppers, tomatoes, and seeds did not survive. One pepper plant is still being babied and unlikely to bare fruit this year, and the others couldn't even revive with care and attention. So I gambled and it did not pay off. I have had to repurchase at local nursery's and won't be ordering again. read more

Gurneys has gone downhill. For several years, it had been my go-to nursery. No more! So sad, my purchases this year were expensive crap.

I ordered sweet potatoes May 11th (spring) they said they send them out in spring... I hadn't recieved them weeks later. I asked for a refund and they said they'd give me a "replacement Certificate". I wanted a refund but they said their policy is not to give refunds and I quote "for an item that is not currently in stock but is scheduled to return in a future." Only giving one star because I have to! I am so disgruntled with the dishonest email promotions of free shipping with discount codes that never work. Since this is an order I usually make once a year I just always end up paying the shipping costs that should be free and shrugging it off but today I tried to contact customer service after two hours between a buggy chat function and call my problem was not able to be resolved. I was given a variety of useless "free shipping discount codes" that never work and told I'd have to spend $15 more in order to get it to work. It's regrettable I have to give this place a one. I ordered three plants end of March and I still have not received two of them. Their customer service does not answer emails. You wait a long time on the phone before they finally answer and when they did, I never did find out where one order went, and the other order is evidently on backorder. It's unfortunate that I lost my magic wand and crystal ball in the 1980s or I would've known that because I certainly didn't receive any notification from gurney's. Additionally, I said I would like to cancel the order and she said I couldn't even though it was on backorder and they didn't know where my other order was. Here's what you need to do. Don't waste your time with gurneys if you have a billing issue, contact your bank and dispute the item with your bank and request them to do a charge back. Keep all of your documents. If you have any kind of decent bank, they will charge the amount back. I just requested a charge back earlier today and I've already received notification from my bank that they're on it. I ordered 2 different types of potato starts, not only did they arrived mostly dead. I followed the instructions to revive and then plant and every single one has died off. I was issued a credit they don't do refunds. Don't bother ordering from them the customer service is terrible and they won't refund you. Additionally, it took almost a month to get them. First off, they sent me an email stating my order was sent on 4/22/25 via USPS first class mail with no tracking information. The order finally arrived today, 5/3/2025. The cost of the seeds was $42.94 but they also charged me $10.99 for shipping and handling. I decided to give Gurney's a try and my experience was mediocre. I ordered onion sets that arrived on time and as expected. They have done well, so far. I also ordered garlic bulbs and received an incorrect variety. I called and spoke to a very nice man that told me the type of garlic that I ordered was already sold out. He offered me a refund. I didn't accept at the time but he told me if the variety I was sent failed in my area that I had until June 30 to request a refund. I also ordered some heirloom tomato varieties that have not done well with less than 20% germination rates. I might order onion sets and garlic from them again but I will be purchasing seeds from a vendor with better/proven germination rates. read more

I placed an order totaling over $100 with Gurney's and was shocked to find out they shipped it without any tracking information. Their excuse? It was a "lightweight" item, so it went out via USPS First Class Flat--which offers zero tracking or delivery confirmation. When I reached out through their live chat, the experience went from bad to worse. The representative gave conflicting explanations, dodged my concerns, and ultimately ended the conversation mid-chat while I was still responding. Unprofessional and flat-out rude. Shipping expensive items without tracking in 2025 is unacceptable. There was no option at checkout to upgrade shipping or add protection. When your entire business revolves around shipping seeds and plants, how is there no secure shipping method for higher-value orders? We have used this company off and on for years. I know things have changed.The world has changed. However, we ordered three plants that arrived dead. We reached out. They offered to let us pick some new plants or seeds for the same amount. So we picked out six seed packets, and upon those being delivered, we didn't get one of the packets at all and one of the other packets was not what we ordered, it was something completely different. Said my zip code was invalid and they sent the product to someone else. I disputed the charge. It was the only way of getting my money back. I'd give zero stars if I could. Garlic bulbs were not packaged properly and broke apart into individual cloves during shipping. Once the bulbs break apart they need to be planted immediately and it is not planting time for another week or two. So the bulbs I bought are useless for planting and a waste of money. I contacted their "customer service" with pictures showing the problem with their garlic and no one has contacted me back. They say they guarantee satisfaction but they don't stand up to that promise. Also, they will send you several emails a day about new promotions and I had to unsubscribe as it was obsessive. I ordered onion seed, as Gurney's were the first seed catalog i came across who sold this variety. A month went by with no notice of shipping. Emailed Gurney's and received a prompt reply that another package of seed would be sent out. Ten days later the seed arrived and were planted indoors in trays. Zero germination-not one seed germinated. They were sowed in the same mix and in the same way as three other varieties, from a different seed company, all of which were near 100% germination. Meanwhile, I received the first order, damaged and taped shut. I replanted these seeds and am curious as to whether they will germinate or not. As it stands I am a 6 weeks late in sowing this variety, so I don't know if they will make. Gurney's used to be my parents go to seed catalog, but times have changed and I won't be ordering from them again. Too bad. read more

Two out of the three plants arrived DEAD and their customer service 'offering' of compensation didn't even cover my shipping costs. On 04/10/25 I called and was told order shipped 4/1/25 must wait 10-15 days before they will do anything on order. Phoned again on 4/18/25 and requested refund, was told NO NO you must wait another 24 hrs, it's 15 business days; NO REFUNDS only store credit or reship or order. Called today, 04/22/25 and again requested refund, why would I want store credit with someone I no longer want to do business with? Why would I want items reshipped when it is already too late? Customer Service continually regurgitated the shipping date of 4/1/25 by 1st class USPS, they can't track 1st class USPS. I live in growing zone 6b. Gurney would only send we plants in growing zone 6. This would put me 3 weeks from the planting date in 6b. They absolutely refused to send them earlier. They easily canceled my order. I was amazed a big company like this did not understand growing zones and would rather lose a customer than understand growing zones. I might also add that my pea seeds have not arrived and in this 6b area peas are planted in March. Totally amazed by this company!! I am placing a review here because Gurney's removed it from their website. Last year I ordered 2 apple trees, 1 arrived dead so they replaced it with a coupon. In Nov '21 , in order to get free shipping, I ordered 2 peach trees using the coupon to pay for 1 expecting spring delivery. On 5/18/22 I received both trees, 1 was broke just above the root graft. It had been broken prior to shipment because it was taped above & below the damage to a stick. When I called about the peach tree the customer service agent said she would give me a refund for the tree in a Gurney's certificate. I explained that this was a replacement tree & asked if she could just replace the tree instead of another coupon (so I would not need to buy anything else in order to get free shipping) & she stated that ALL peach trees were out of stock (in May). I asked if she could send an apple & they were out of stock...ALL fruit trees were out of stock. She asked me if there was anything else she could send & I had her send a clematis. I posted a review. In June I received a replacement certificate in the mail so I curiously checked my online account only to notice Gurney's has removed my review & pictures. This was a very reputable company when it was located in Yankton, SD. Now, not so much. I had given them the benefit of the doubt; 2 honeysuckle vines & 5 hydrangeas I ordered last fall have died as well. I will never order from this company again. read more

We are getting a bumper crop of fruit, but NOT FROM GURNEYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything they sent us was dead or dying. When we couldn't order EXACTLY what needed replaced, they charged us prohibitive shipping which ate up what we were "refunded" We gave up and went to a local nursery and now have wonderful plants that are giving us great fruit at half the cost. The only thing worse than their prices and quality is their customer service.
