Best Guinness Beef Stew in Ireland! Of course drank a huge Guinness with it and haven't stopped dreaming about it for 8 years....

Based on all of the five-star reviews of this Pub, I feel peer pressured to also give a five-star review. During a cold and windy November afternoon, we drove to the piers to see and feel the fury of the Atlantic Ocean. The wind was strong enough to be able to lean into it, and the spray from the waves gave a nice shower every time the wind whipped you with the small beads of water. Many photos later, frozen to the core, we drove up, and stopped at the first pub, with happened to be Gus O'Connor's. We walked in right as the coal fireplace was being stoked, and were thankfully seated right next to it. As we warmed up, we started to look around, and were impressed by all of the US police/fire patches, the woodwork, the fireplace itself, the conversations between the locals and staff, and the overall atmosphere. It certainly felt like the most Irish pub I've ever been to. I order a beef with potatoes, and while not bad, for a fine restaurant, it would have been a very low rating. However, I reason that this is not the place one goes for a fine meal. I would very much come back here, have a few drinks, sit by the glowing coals, and enjoy their delicious seafood chowder. read more

We decided to come to Doolin on our Ireland trip due to its close proximity to the Cliffs of Moher. The night before seeing the cliffs, we wandered onto the Main Street in Doolin. Starving, we ventured inside. There was traditional Irish music playing from an incredible band. The atmosphere was so welcoming! After a couple rounds of Guinness, we had a delicious dinner. Couldn't have been happier stumbling upon this gem. If anyone is staying in Doolin, I highly recommend stopping here for a lively and delicious meal. We popped in for some seafood chowder after a cruise from the nearby pier out to the Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher. We almost had the place to ourselves on a March afternoon. The lively, colorful interior is always a pleasure- it's cozy in all the ways a good pub should be yet spacious enough to handle any bus loads of tourists that may pull up. The seafood chowder was excellent, to no one's surprise. Ditto for the fish and chips. And the price for the four of us was very... palatable. Based on prior reviews, we stopped by this venue for lunch. BIG MISTAKE. * Nasty staff - including management and the owner. * Ordered hot food that was cold. * Service was terrible! Waited for 17 minutes before a server came to take our order. Saw servers (3 of them) smoking cigarette between taking orders. * While using the restroom, a server used the facilities (toilet) and let without washing her hands!!! * Requested tap water and was served bottle water (5 euros each bottle; discovered when we got the bill). Restaurant claimed the tap water wasn't "drinkable" and decided to give us the bottle water without any notice to the tap water. Restaurant refused to remove the undisclosed water charge or even discount it. * We watched the staff using the tap water to wash glasses. When questioning the female (bleached blond hair, middle-aged) about the water, she snapped back, "we don't give out tap water, you have pay for water!" * Truth is, this place is discreetly, underhandedly, hiding gouging customers. My recommendation, find another local place to give your business to. read more

Three words: Fish and Chips YESSSS!!! This was my first time having Fish and Chips and it was amazing. We stopped here on our Galway bus tour and the food was amazing. The only annoying bit was that we had to go up to the bar to order, but once we did, it was so worth it. The food came out very quickly and this is a really local bar (with the exception of us tourists). I really enjoyed coming here to get a feel for what a rural Irish town would be like and I wasn't disappointed! The fish was cooked to golden perfection and the chips weren't your average potato hunks, they were crispy and golden and complimented the chips perfectly. My gal pal and I were on a tour to the Cliffs of Moher and mid-day we had a lovely lunch stop at Gus O'Connor's. When I think of Irish Pubs, Gus O'Connor's is exactly what would come to mind first. They've got good beer, great pub food, friendly (but sarcastic) staff, live music, and a cozy and fun atmosphere. Everything you'd want in an Irish pub. Our big group came in quarter past one and were told to find tables throughout the pub. We had to remember our table number and order up at the bar. Easy peasy. I decided to go for tha bangers and mash (mashed potatoes and pork sausages with gravy) and my friend went with the cheeseburger and chips. We also ordered 2 Coffees w/ Baileys - which hit the spot perfectly! By the time we got back to our table (a short 30 second walk from the bar), our food was already there. It had to be the quickest service I'd ever received. And yes the food was fresh, hot, and delicious! My friend and I didn't realize how hungry we were because our whole meal was silent and us eating. Also, the food was just that good that we had to devour it very quickly. I have to give props to the wonderful staff. They have to deal with large groups of tourists every day - but hey, that's how they make their money right? Regardless, they were very kind, patient, and hilarious. If you ever make your way through Doolin, you need to stop by Gus O'Connor's! Plus there are cute shops right next door that you can visit after your meal! read more

First time in Ireland and this was one of our favorite places! Great pub food and music! If you come to Doolin, don't miss this place!

Gee, I wish I came here on some evening after all the tour buses disposed of all the tourists far away from Doolin. You can just tell this place has a lot of charm and probably room for a little musical ensemble playing Irish tunes for a spirited crowd. But I wouldn't know since I was a member of one of those buses from hell and was subject to a zoo-like atmosphere of chaos when my tour group ate here prior to our stop at the Cliffs of Moher nearby. There was no method to the madness when it came to ordering lunch. Just a snappish attitude with a guttural brogue like it was the West Irish outpost of Chicago's Wiener Circle. I wish Triumph the Insult Comic Dog was with me ripping the hostess to shreds. I ended up ordering a € 4.95 bowl of Vegetable Soup, which was thick, filling and tongue-burning hot with a piece of warm brown bread giving it even more gravity (see photo). Then I went for a € 10.00 bowl of O'Connor's Caesar Salad. The hearty salad was ladled heavily with their creamy dressing with a generous serving of chicken interspersed with the hearts of Romaine (see photo). It was quite good, but the problem was I had all of ten minutes to devour it before returning to the bus. That's because they forgot my order amid the anarchy and didn't think to compensate me until I flagged down one of the hard-working waitresses who finally took pity on me. Guess the luck of the Irish didn't rub off on me. I give these people such props for dealing with all of us tourists. They make it work so well with a set menu and everything flows quickly. Our table has fish and chips, seafood chowder and a burger. The two that got fish and chips raves about it. The burger was super beefy and the chips were also tasty. The chowder was good but could have used a bit more creamy flavor. I was confused by the sandwich selection but chose chicken and it was quite tasty. The men who were working behind the bar and the other staff bussing tables were all very nice and doing a great job. Went on a tour to the Cliffs of Moher and the bus stopped here for lunch. Very nice pub and very efficient at serving a bus full of people. I got a Pint of Guiness of course while waiting for my grub. Guinness is excellent with everything and this point was no exception. Cold and Refreshing! The Beef and Guinness Stew was excellent with tender lean beef and vegetables. Excellent choice on a cold rainy day, real comfort food to warm your soul. I would definitely get this again. For lunch I had the beef and Guinness stew. It was really tasty. It had a lot of vegetables in it and the stew itself was really tasty. It came with town bread as well. You guys this is nuts. They had a coed bathroom & everyone just went to the bathroom (i assume) & then they left & nothing bad happened (while i was there). Anyway i also got a steak sandwich. This place was packed! So for sure you knew you were getting some good food if it could draw a consistent crowd like it had when we were there. This is the type of place you order food and then you go find a seat. The place is oddly shaped so you may end up in the most random place for seating but still its great because it seriously had a lot of its own character and style. The menu was a little bit limited if you have a restricted diet but luckily there always something on the menu for those wanting either a vegetarian or chicken only option. The place is a legitimate pub style place, lots of people and crowded all over. I didn't think it be easy for the server to find us since we were tucked in the back but she found us and gave us our food. This was our lunch stop on a tour to Cliffs of Moher. The driver raved about this restaurant and I had to try it. The food is ordered at the bar. But, first you have to get a table which was a bit hard to get as two tour buses had already come at the same time. Still, the restaurant staff managed the situation. Ordered atlantic mussels and the beef and potato stew. A bit expensive - total came out to around 34€, but I suppose Doolin is more remote. The food was amazing and the price was even better. We sampled a few different things, because when were we going to be back? A great pub down Fisherstreet in Doolin that brings in nightly traditional session musicians to regale the monstrous post-Cliffs of Moher crowds. You can pretty much bet that O'Connors will be packed with tourists, which has its pluses and minuses. On the downside, it's not really a place you'll go to shoot the shit with the locals and have some authentic craic. On the other hand, the local musicians are ALWAYS fabulous and the crowds can be downright euphoric, because who isn't happy when they're on vacation?! Although the scene can be a little gimmicky and forced, with renditions of "Dirty Old Town" and "Wild Rover" not uncommonly belted in sing-along fashion, the traditional music at this pub has always impressed me and I've found the musicians themselves to be quite welcoming to outsiders. The food here is a solid 3.5 stars. Chowder when we last went was a winner. The stew and fish & chips are quality as well. The prices are certainly higher than in other places in County Clare, but for Doolin it's reasonable. Pints of Guinness are delicious and the staff are always friendly and efficient. Beware the hoards of tourbuses that congregate on this area during the day. It really can turn into a madhouse when a few of them pull up. My advice is to stay in Doolin and to walk down the road for a pint, a pie and a bit music at O'Connors. This is the best way to enjoy it -- without the rush of a tour bus and the hassle of a herded crowd. The music starts at 9:30. Get there by 9 to secure a good seat. read more

Great place to eat & drink (responsibly) after a day at The Cliffs of Moher. Tis is the most popular place in a tiny town that is full of restaurants, pubs, and gift shops. Be forewarned, that ALL of the tour busses bring people to Doolin after the Mohers and Gus's place fills up quick. Every table has a number and there is NO table service. You order everything at the bar and tell them your table number. Do not be put out if some of the servers seem less than friendly, it's probably because they are extremely busy hosting impatient Americans. The food is great! read more

They do get very busy at times as a lot of tour buses stop here, however they have a great system to get people in and out fast. You go in and grab a table which has a number on it.
