Unbelievable fresh, flavorful pizza you can't find back home!
So this is my first review in Italy; I feel like I owed it to one of the best pizzas I have ever had. I've been to a few other places but the food here blew me away down to every single ingredient. Where to begin. The establishment is on the smaller side a few blocks down from a bridge. Not a bad walk at all (just don't get hit by the insane drivers). I had a feeling since we went around the time they opened on a Saturday night the crowd would be crazy. When we first arrived, the line was out the door extending to the corner. All of my friends and I were starving. We couldn't handle a long wait. I went up to the "host" where he explained to me, as well as he could: we place our order, wait for our food outside, and then we're seated once the food is ready. It's a ticket system during busy times. The wait wasn't bad at all like we were expecting. We were seated after 15 minutes (and mind you we had a group of 9 so we were worried). The guy that took our order wasn't the nicest, he rushed us, but I understand considering he probably deals with annoying tourists on a daily basis. Our food was put a top the shelf in front of where they make the pizza just a few minutes l after we were seated. We all ordered wine, which we didn't realize was self serving until we received our food. Once settled with wine and food, we dug in.
The pizza was glorious. I'm trying to figure out the next time I can get over there within the next few weeks. It was that good. And it was at such a decent price. I ordered the Calabrese pizza for €7 which included pomodoro (sauce), mozzarella, spicy salami and basil. Out of this world. Every ingredient was fresh and packed a ton of flavor, hence why I will be describing each one.
The crust: soft yet had a slight amount of chewiness. I liked how it had a substantial crust to it; thick and bready. The crust was beautifully colored with char at some points from the oven. I will say though, it was on the salty side but oh so delicious. It was a perfect support to all the juices and toppings.
The sauce: you could tell it was made fresh. It just bursted with a flavor I've never experienced from sauce before, which is saying a lot since I've come from an Italian family. I'm not a huge fan of sauce; I'm not one to dip crust, breadsticks or anything in it. But while I was eating dinner tonight I wish I had more of their sauce to dip the thick crust in it was so good!
The mozzarella: As delicious as I expected. It was so delectable! Soft and creamy yet held its form. My friend actually couldn't finish her entire pizza and she didn't want to bring it home so I ate all the mozzarella off of her last slice. I feel like in repeating myself but it just had such an unbelievable flavor. I can see myself just eating an entire ball of mozzarella for a snack.
The salami: Crispy yet fatty in a great way. I loved how the fat melded with the sauce and juices of the mozzarella to create a sauce in its own. There wasn't a significant amount of liquid but enough to dip some of my crust into it. Delicious.
As a cute little thing, my group and I signed our ticket number and put it in a barrel under the glass table top. There were hundreds there signed by people around the world. It was really neat.
Overall, I will be back here. No doubt. I want to get one in the shape of a heart. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a good Italian pizza. You even get to see them make the pizza (if there is room to stand in there)! I hope to go on a less busy day so we can enjoy the atmosphere more. I've heard authentic Italian food was good, but the ingredients just blow my mind at this place. read more
