My son and I had a lovely meal here last week. I had the Made in Italy pizza and he had a panini. Overall we were both pleased with our selections. They both had fresh ingredients and were cooked properly, but I will admit, the pizza could have used a little pizzazz to kick it up a notch. I'm not sure what it's missing, but I felt like it was a little bland maybe due to the potatoes. Maybe it's meant to appeal to the local taste but that's just my opinion. Open until 10:00 but did not seem prepared or interested in serving customers arriving at 8:30. The tables were all covered in dirty dishes. She asked us to wait while she cleared a table but then did other things instead, so we had to wait a bit. She took our order fairly quickly and the food came out fresh and hot and was delicious. I had the vegetariana pizza with pepperoni. My granddaughter had the Fettuccini Bolognese except they were out of fettuccini so they made it with a pasta similar to penne. The flavor was still good. When we finished eating, the servers were too busy talking to bring us our check. I had to go and ask her for it. Definitely not good service. read more

Perhaps I committed sacrilege by visiting Italy while in Scotland, but it was worth it. Besides, I have plenty of pubs in a row for the rest of the week. Made In Italy combines friendly service with tasty drinks and treats, plus the whole meal if you're so inclined. Run from pub lasagna (does such a thing exist?); run here instead. My macchiato was a crafty combination of beauty and taste. I almost couldn't drink it, staring at the lovely cup and perfect foamy colors. The toffee crunch wasn't overly sweet and of course paired perfectly. The hardest part was choosing. Don't confine yourself to coffee/dessert; they have many lovely pastas, flatbreads, pizzas, charcuteries, etc. I'll return since it's across the street. read more

Stopped in at first just for a coffee and to get out of the cold when they had most likely just opened but decided to try a bit also. Couldn't resist ordering a small basic pizza with pepperoni, so happy I did. So, we went there around 8:30. It was very convenient to where our hotel is but also near the Edinburgh Castle so still very busy. We were told that there was no dining inside left for the rest of the evening and we can sit outside if we wanted. We decided to since we were so hungry and it was late. Our server took awhile to bring out for the water and finally we got to order. Very slow!! I wouldn't typically be so impatient but at this point it was 9pm and we had to sit outside and it was 45°. Finally when I couldn't bare it anymore, we were grabbed to come inside when they had an open table. We had ordered while we were outside. We got the garlic cheese bread to start and I got seafood pasta. Since the food took awhile, we luckily didn't get it until we were warm inside. The food was delicious. The seafood in my past was all huge - the mussels and the shrimp. Even though the service was slow - our server was extremely friendly. And I'm glad I was able to enjoy the food in warmth. read more

Service is terrible, never remind what we ordered include garlic bread already, we could avoid double order, we pay more. It doesn't make sense that the veg plate include garlic bread but didn't show on menu. Pizza without cutter on service! I didn't know they offer pizza as a whole, and it turns you have to cut by yourself, but the waiter doesn't offer the cutter unless seeing myself trying hard with cutlery! Also my pasta, the server ask whether I need any parmesan cheese, I said yes, but it never comes. Also it's very rude for foreigners, who cannot follow their speaking speed, robotically repeating and looks quite racial discrimination! The environment is quite terrible as well, tables are so close, I'm back to back with strangers. Also my bag was been knocked off several times! Finally, food quality is normal. Located in the heart of the Grassmarket, my wife and I arrived here late one morning after freshly coming in from an overnight flight to Edinburgh. I was starving as we approached our Airbnb. We saw this place and decided to give it a try. It was very busy so we sat outside. It has great views of the Grassmarket and it was bustling. I had a cappuccino (which was good) and ordered the vegetarian English breakfast. I ate almost everything. Not the best breakfast in the world, but it came out quickly and filled me up. My only qualm with this place was trying to find our server. When I asked why nobody served us, a waitress brushed me off with a 'understaffed' reason. While that maybe the case, this is no way to treat the customers. This place was packed on a Friday night, but it was rather frustrating for our 2 person table to be ignored. People who came long after us got their food first. It took over an hour to get our appetizer salads, and about 40 more minutes to get our two 10-inch pizzas. The big upside: all of the food was absolutely incredible. My starter salad consisted of only rocket greens, generous shavings of parmigiana reggiano, and luscious balsamic vinegar, and it was fantastic. I had the four cheese pizza, and the cheese was fresh and bountiful, the dough perfection. My husband was likewise impressed by the food. After a long day of walking around and being tourist we stumbled upon this delicious spot. The smell is what seduced us to walk in. Truly glad we did. I had the lasagne which was hands down one of the best lasagnas I have ever had. We ordered garlic bread for the table, which had us fighting over the last piece. Four stars because it was good food it didn't blow me away, but was very good. A lot of the pubs in this area stop serving food around 8, so we ended up here by chance. Nice outside patio along a busy street, and the inside was just okay nothing special. We had the meat lovers pizza, made in Italy pizza, the burrata cheese pizza, bruschetta, and mini arancini balls. All of the food was delicious, we couldn't decide which pizza was our favorite. They were all pretty thin crust, and we split three among 6 of us. Service was good, everything came at once. First time eating here! Was a great atmosphere, although a bit cozy, but reasonable considering this is a touristy block. The food was excellent and definitely tasted loyal to Italy (based on my limited knowledge). My wife and I had the Spaghetti Carbonara and it was fantastic. Made in Italy offers great food and excellent service, and is in a central location for people to grab a tasty lunch or dinner as they pass through the Grassmarket. The restaurant has a really friendly and inviting atmosphere with lots of neatly laid out, clean tables and plenty of interesting pictures and ornaments to look at around the walls. The staff are all warm and efficient, know the menu intricately and don't harangue you as can be the norm in some places. The menu has a great range of Italian dishes and I went for their Rigatoni Mamma Mia which had meatballs in a delicious tomato sauce. It was served quickly and in a big, filling portion which was definitely sufficient for an evening main. As a group we spent about £10 each altogether which we thought was an amazing deal considering how good the food was. read more

On my third trip to Edinburgh from the US, my family and I stumbled upon this little gem in the middle of Grassmarket and it quick became our favorite go to for breakfast and lunch. The service is excellent and very friendly and they have wonderful pastries and pizza. Also, the espresso was excellent! If you are in Edinburgh you must stop in and enjoy a bite to eat or just a cup of coffee. You won't regret it! read more

Their Bellini salad with grilled Chicken is one of the best salads I have tasted in Edinburgh. It has some lovely sundried tomatoes, black olives, peppers as well as a balsamic dressing. A friend also usually enjoys the vegetarian Calzone, excellent value at circa £5. A great place to people watch when sitting outside in the summer with the Grassmarket Sunday market and at this time of year bands playing from the jazz festival. One negative was that outside tables now have to pay for their meal when they order. I presume that they had too many people leaving without paying - sad reflection of our society. We didn't order coffee or afters as we decided to wander elsewhere. I feel that they will ultimately lose out on the amount each person spends per meal. Time will tell. read more

We came here 3 out of the 5 nights that we stayed! The wait staff was super friendly and the pasta was delicious. The sandwich that we ordered the first night was like a grilled cheese sandwich with ham. The rest of the nights we ordered pasta and pizza; it was scrumptious. We were seated right away even though it was crowded, they squeezed us in. This is a very good restaurant and I highly recommend to anyone that likes pasta and/or Pizza. I also found two "hearts"/stumps, where the meristem originates from the plant. i.e. the hard part that you do not eat. My pizza was burnt edges with undercooked dough, resulting in a very interesting experience as i tried to saw through it, flinging toppings across the table. after trying to signal the waitress for our bill, gave up after 15 minutes and went up to the front to pay for it. I'm beginning to lose count of how many times I have walked past Made in Italy on a sunny day in Edinburghs Grass Market and thought 'Wow, that looks like a great place to go to'. Thats because on those rare Scottish sunny days, I would forgive you for thinking you were actually in Italy - or at least thats how it felt as soon as we took the plunge and grabbed on of the quickly filling seats outside Made in Italy. From the moment we sat down, we felt as though we were in authentic Italy - a real Italian waitress who was impossibly charming greated us and took our orders. The food was fantastic - my pizza not only being square, but thin and crispy with a delicious topping of mozzarella and vine tomatoes - yum! The coffee we then moved onto - we were reliably informed - was award winning, what ever that means - but it did taste damn good. In a city that is full of Italian eateries of various kinds, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd. So here goes with my verdict of Made in Italy. Like Jonathan, I had walked past this place a few times before going into it. I went in for lunch, and sampled one of their pizzas. It was a pretty good pizza, all told, and the Grassmarket relaxed ambience merely added to the feeling of enjoyment. Whilst it maybe doesn't compare to a Zizzi or Pizza Express, it was still very good for what it was. I would be prepared to go back here if I was in the area; it's perhaps not the sort of place I would travel a distance to eat at. read more

This quaint café in Grassmarket is best enjoyed on one of those rare sunny days! It's one of many cafés in a row, and on days like today, where I was just there for lunch, it can feel like you're on holiday, sitting somewhere in a southern European piazza. They serve antipasti, pasta and pizza dishes as well as paninis, desserts and ice creams! I would definitely recommend the Veneto Panini, a fantastic dish of chicken, pesto, mozzarella and olives, which I think is priced pretty fairly. I'm also a big fan of their ice creams. I've had a meat calzone here, which wasn't on my top ten calzone list, but it was alright. Great place to sit outdoors on a sunny, lazy afternoon. read more

The food here is excellent, but it struggles sometimes when it gets busy. Normally you don't have to wait too long, but the last time I went in (during the festival) it was absolutely rammed, and it was quite a long wait for the food. To be fair this is because with the pizzas the dough is made fresh so takes a bit of time, but if you're in a rush then it'll be tight. The food is excellent, I had a pizza with king prawns, garlic, onion and sun-dried tomatoes and my friend had basically every meat you could imagine. His was amazing and mine was really good, but I was a bit disappointed by the lack of prawns (only 6 on a 12 inch pizza). They have a range of pizzas and pastas and a create your own pizza option all at good prices. The service is efficient and friendly and it's generally a really good eating experience. read more
