    Macchiato
    Paul V.

Perhaps I committed sacrilege by visiting Italy while in Scotland, but it was worth it. Besides, I have plenty of pubs in a row for the rest of the week. Made In Italy combines friendly service with tasty drinks and treats, plus the whole meal if you're so inclined. Run from pub lasagna (does such a thing exist?); run here instead. My macchiato was a crafty combination of beauty and taste. I almost couldn't drink it, staring at the lovely cup and perfect foamy colors. The toffee crunch wasn't overly sweet and of course paired perfectly. The hardest part was choosing. Don't confine yourself to coffee/dessert; they have many lovely pastas, flatbreads, pizzas, charcuteries, etc. I'll return since it's across the street.

On holiday and of course you have to have a pizza night! This place was an excellent choice. The service was nice. The dough was exceptionally tasty. The meat pizza had a selection of high quality meats that did not disappoint. Tempting to go back!

A beyond delicious gingerbread latte. It was amazing

Stopped in at first just for a coffee and to get out of the cold when they had most likely just opened but decided to try a bit also. Couldn't resist ordering a small basic pizza with pepperoni, so happy I did. Wasn't able to snap a picture of that though, it some how disappeared the second it hit the table The staff were just lovely and the restaurant is located right in the grass market and was so peaceful and welcoming at that time of day. I talked about that pizza and coffee the rest of our visit in Scotland

Fried burrata - this is a can't miss

Pretty good stop. Enjoyed the fried burrata, especially when spread on the crusts of our pizza. The service was fast and friendly as well. Plus, we managed to get in without a wait or reservation. Great little place for some Italian cheesy goodness.

So, we went there around 8:30. It was very convenient to where our hotel is but also near the Edinburgh Castle so still very busy. We were told that there was no dining inside left for the rest of the evening and we can sit outside if we wanted. We decided to since we were so hungry and it was late. Our server took awhile to bring out for the water and finally we got to order. Very slow!! I wouldn't typically be so impatient but at this point it was 9pm and we had to sit outside and it was 45°. Finally when I couldn't bare it anymore, we were grabbed to come inside when they had an open table. We had ordered while we were outside. We got the garlic cheese bread to start and I got seafood pasta. Since the food took awhile, we luckily didn't get it until we were warm inside. The food was delicious. The seafood in my past was all huge - the mussels and the shrimp. Even though the service was slow - our server was extremely friendly. And I'm glad I was able to enjoy the food in warmth.

    Vegetarian English breakfast

Located in the heart of the Grassmarket, my wife and I arrived here late one morning after freshly coming in from an overnight flight to Edinburgh. I was starving as we approached our Airbnb. We saw this place and decided to give it a try. It was very busy so we sat outside. It has great views of the Grassmarket and it was bustling. I had a cappuccino (which was good) and ordered the vegetarian English breakfast. I ate almost everything. Not the best breakfast in the world, but it came out quickly and filled me up. My only qualm with this place was trying to find our server. Would have loved to have tried some of their actual Italian foods too, but what I really needed was breakfast, and breakfast they do!

This place was packed on a Friday night, but it was rather frustrating for our 2 person table to be ignored. People who came long after us got their food first. It took over an hour to get our appetizer salads, and about 40 more minutes to get our two 10-inch pizzas. The big upside: all of the food was absolutely incredible. My starter salad consisted of only rocket greens, generous shavings of parmigiana reggiano, and luscious balsamic vinegar, and it was fantastic. I had the four cheese pizza, and the cheese was fresh and bountiful, the dough perfection. My husband was likewise impressed by the food. That said, I wouldn't go there again based on their service.

I had lasagna and my friend had a chicken dish. Both were full of flavor. Then we decided to treat ourselves to dessert since they are famous fir their gelato. Wow! I ordered the Haggis Ravioli as it was on my list of delicacies to eat in Edinburgh but the rest of our orders were the sweet stuff. We got the Affogato served with espresso in a moka pot which was a first time for us. The crepe and the chocolate caked served with gelato were even better. The main restaurant has Italian caricatures and murals which was a nice touch. The secondary dining area (The Hispaniola) had feels of a Spanish pirate ship which was odd for an Italian themed restaurant. The latter was the site of the Rutherford's Bar (1834-2007) frequented by famous clientele and then was transformed into a Treasure Island themed restaurant. Food was really good. I'll even come back when in Edinburgh. Service could use a little work though.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. Pork cracklins were a bit hard and crunchy, but everything else was perfect. We had fresh bread and langostinis for starters, along with a smokey whiskey cocktail, the Smoked Indiscretion! For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. Highly recommend a visit to the Devil's Advocate, if you can book a table in advance.

But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.
