In fact, I didn't know there were BAD dentists until I heard the complaints about others from friends. After taking a long hiatus from going to the Dentist, I did the walk of shame into Dr. Shieh's office, and there was no nagging or questions as to where I had been, but just a "hello! Good to see you". He doesn't try to sell you anything (except on the need to floss....). He also doesn't try to convince you of unnecessary procedures. Thanks to my dental hiatus, I was mighty close to needing a root canal. Since I had bad reactions to the numbing agents used, Dr. Shieh made sure he did the procedure that would be best for me AND my teeth. So if you need a dentist, go to Dr. Shieh. He makes it about as pleasant as I figure any Dentist can be (I mean - the Novocaine shot didn't hurt a bit. That is some mad skill.)

I came across a shady dentist in Arlington, when I first moved to Washington DC. Then I found a decent dentist in DC proper, but didn't love the way he did a filling - since he left it rough and not smooth, and seemed irritated when I wanted it polished. After 3 years of unhappy/so-so dentistry in DC, I moved to SF in August '07, and was again terrified to find a dentist. (Do they all want my $ from fillings? And sure, I wasn't flossing every day, but I was at least 3 x's a week!) So it gets better... I move to SF, and go to the dentist whom my OK dentist in DC recommended - Dr. Murakami in SF. My dentist in DC said she did amazing work (since he'd seen some of her old patients who had moved to DC), but I wasn't so impressed. Dr. Murakami had a great, sassy personality and demeanor, and she re-did my rough filling from the DC dentist, but then claimed I had 6 cavities! 6!?!? Really?! I was astonished. Clearly I needed a second opinion. Well, that was one strike against Dr. Murakami - but not necessarily a strike, b/c who really knows since cavities can be subjective on the watch & wait, or fix now scale (or so I'm learning). Well, the real issue was that Dr. Murakami didn't tell me before she fixed my cavity from the DC dentist that her office demands full payment up front, and then instead of them billing insurance, I bill insurance (and insurance reimburses me, not the dentist). Um... this is different. Best part: I don't find this out until AFTER she started drilling, and the service was done. I walk up to the counter, all ready to check out (assuming they'll bill my insurance, and then their office will bill me the remainder later). Um, no. Instead, I'm asked to fork over $869 right there. Yeah, shocker! Needless to say, I never returned, even though Dr. Murakami's office phone stalked me every week or bi-weekly for the next 4 months (even after I politely asked them to stop calling me, explaining that I wouldn't be returning, given their sketchy billing policy - they should explain their unique process up front, before any service is performed). My first impression was not great because he looked really unhealthy and his eyelids were hanging down half covering his eyes. However, I tried not to judge and give him a chance to prove himself. At first he didn't think what I had was a hernia, but after I showed him how I could push it in, he decided that yes, it was in fact a hernia. (Shouldn't he know what a hernia looks and feels like?) He assured me that he was very experienced at repairing hernias, and when I asked if he could provide patient referrals, he skirted the question by directing me to his 3 positive reviews on Yelp :-( He scheduled me for an operation within a week, at my request. But first he insisted I come back for an EKG before the surgery. When I returned for the 'mandatory' EKG he informed me that he planned to do a rectal, pelvic and breast examination as well. WHAT!?! for a hernia operation??? I think NOT! He really had a strange vibe that I was not comfortable with. He said that just because I look and feel healthy, doesn't mean that I am(?) and therefore I needed all of these other tests(???) I don't know what his real reasons were and I don't want to falsely accuse him of something he did not intend. But I did not feel good about his tactics and I left without doing any of his tests and cancelled my operation. I have chosen to take my business elsewhere. I have asked others in the medical profession about this and everyone I've spoken to says that it just doesn't add up to do all of these tests (except for the EKG) prior to a hernia procedure. Also, people think it's strange that he didn't even recognize my hernia until I convinced him. Just sayin' Be-aware.

He is really honest and doesn't rush to fill cavities if he thinks that they may resolve themselves. I would recommend him to anyone especially if dentistry in general makes you nervous.
