GW MFA PRIMARY CARE is going downhill fast. I had an excellent primary care physician there but she relocated to SC. After waiting 7 weeks to see the new doctor, my appointment 9:15am primary care manager calls me 8:03am to say the doctor will not be coming to work, that my appointment is cancelled and I will have to make another appointment. WHAT I am already downtown via a 20 minute ride to the METRO - 2 TRAINS - 10 MINUTES WALK TO M STREET Primary Care dismissed ALL the inconveniences PARKING EXPENSE OF METRO and TRAIN FARES. On Tuesday, December 10th, at 4:20 p.m., my sister-in-law and my 90-year-old mother-in-law arrived at the X-ray department at GW for an X-ray of mom's chest, as ordered by her doctor, due to concerns about pneumonia. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Upon entering, they encountered a woman who came out of her office shaking her arms and screaming at two other patients waiting for X-rays, telling everyone they had to leave because the department was closed.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It would take too long to serve them (they close at 5 but tried kicking everyone out at 4:20). [[HIGHLIGHT]]She also stated that they were not part of GW and were a separate company.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]She insisted that everyone come back at 7 a.m.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My sister explained that she had a doctor's order for my mom's X-ray and that it was necessary. During this exchange, the X-ray technician came out, appearing extremely frustrated about having to attend to my mom. The woman had a very unpleasant demeanor, prompting my sister to inform her that she would need to contact the administration regarding the situation. Once my sister mentioned this, both the woman and the technician calmed down. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The woman then asked my sister to provide her with my mom's forms, which she proceeded to check-in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Then, she stated that my mom's name on the form did not match her name in the system and that she could not do anything about this (a lie).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The woman then instructed my sister to go to the third floor, claiming she could not update my mom's last name in the system, which would complicate insurance processing. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My sister went to the third floor, sharing her troubling experience with a very kind lady who promptly helped update my mom's name in the system.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Afterward, my sister returned to the X-ray department, where the woman had toned down her attitude.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The woman asked how the person on the third floor could update my mom's name. Sharmeen Mustafa seems to think patients MUST come in for a steroid shot if they prefer a pill for a steroid treatment. Seems to think that a patient should have a lab (that they have had repeatedly with no change in outcome for the condition) to determine "something new" (please go work in research if you want a lab rat). No amount of labs or shots will change the outcome of a periodic arthritic flare-up for a patient. Stop acting like every patient's body must respond as YOU expect it to. I also had to inform the doctor that the NSAID medicine that she was suggesting as an unhelpful alternative for arthritis treatment was not advisable for a patient with my condition (I'm uncertain why I would need to educate a doctor with basic information so that she didn't prescribe something harmful to me). read more

Everyone planning to make an appointment with GW Faculty please DON'T. I had to see a Neurologist and my primary doctor recommended GW as top experts. In full fait I made the appointment. I arrive on April 21, go to the counter ask again if the doctor takes my insurance and of course they say YES, he does. A month after being seen I receive a bill for $479!! For what??? Yes, I been deceived to believe they take my insurance but they DON'T. Terrible service. Went in for a sinus infection. Saw a resident who was nice enough. I had a few other issues as well. I was prescribed tylenol. Nothing was done about about the sinus problem, and it progressed into bronchitis over the weekend accompanied with an ongoing cough. I wanted to message my primary care doctor, but messaging service says that if a provider spends more than five minutes my insurance will be charged. I am in the process of changing a physician from GW MFA to another health system. I requested medical records be transferred. I completed all of the necessary paperwork. My new physician's office never received the records. I am a Board-certified internist, currently licensed in Maryland and Virginia. I am also a 77 year old widow, with an immunocomprising condition, living alone in Bethesda, with no close friends or relatives to help me in any way. I do have Medicare and FEP BCBS supplement. A year ago, after attending a book talk in a crowded room, I woke up with Covid. I rushed to the pharmacy, tested positive, started calling the GW clinic in Bethesda (where I was registered as a patient, they had my records), to get a prescription for Paxlovid. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called and called starting at 10 am, no one answered, eventually the telephone hung up, I had to call again. It took 30-40 minutes to get someone to answer, to call in the prescription.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Even with the Paxlovid, I was deadly ill. Without the Paxlovid, I would have died. Was I supposed to go to the clinic, or urgent care, exhaling viruses with each breath? [[HIGHLIGHT]]Needless to say, no one ever called to follow up.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] What if I had been an ordinary 77 year old widow, sick and confused?? I went for a primary care visit. This was my first time using my own insurance and scheduled a visit with GWU MFA with a nurse practitioner. I ensured the provider was in-network and wrote that the reason I was coming was for a well visit. The visit was okay. The Carlos, the NP, seemed dismayed that I scheduled a primary care visit and repeatedly asked why I came. He didn't do any of the normal well visit requirements (e.g., vaccinations, STI check) During the visit, I mentioned I was vegetarian and I once had low iron. He ordered lab tests at the in-house laboratory. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I got home, the office called me saying I had a copay and I told them that was a mistake since it was a preventive visit. They agreed and said they would escalate it. I never heard back[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] A month later I received a $259 bill for the office and $44.78 from Labcorp. I have a HDHP plan so these were the plan's negotiated rate. I am was dismayed that I got a bill since I was very clear it was preventive. I checked the codes they billed and they bill for a non-wellness new Low/medium E/M visit 30-44min and a complex add on-code. I am a certified professional biller and work in health consulting and I can tell this bill is miscoded and upcoded. It's one thing to charge the MDM visit instead of a preventive visit but to attach the add on complexity code is the definition of waste fraud and abuse. The visit didn't have any longitudinal elements nor any complex care. Thankfully, Aetna denied the code. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I tried calling GWU MFA about the bill and Aetna. GWU said they would review the clam however its been a month and I have received 2 phone calls and 2 emails about the outstanding balance. Scheduling is a nightmare!!!!!!!!!!! There has to be a better word, nightmare is not sufficient! We have called two numbers to schedule an appointment. over an hour and a half ago - still on hold on two cell phones... We first called phone line 741-2210, at 8:24am. We decided to try calling another number 741-2634 from another household cell phone after 30 minutes on hold with 741-2210. We thought we'd have two chances!! I received a message on 741-2634 that I need to call between 8 am and 5 pm. It was 8:58 am. We decided to try the same number 741-2634 again and again, finally we pressed the provider number #9 rather than patient needing to schedule choice #2. I urge you to AVOID going to GWU Medical Faculty Associates. I've had numerous MFA doctors since 2011, and they're mostly excellent. However, there are a number of serious problems with the business side of MFA. In case you haven't read the other reviews, here's what I have heard are the reasons behind the dreadful, months-long wait you'll have if they even let you make an appointment: 1) MDs are leaving GWU MFA as fast as they possibly can. 2) Not having enough doctors means no matter how many years you've gone to a particular doctor, you are either NOT getting any appointment at all, or you can take an appointment in three months. And it doesn't matter what your medical/health situation is. I recently had an urgent eye issue, so called the Opthalmology Dept. for an appointment. I've been an annual (and more) patient there since at least 2011. The receptionist said she had an appointment available in FEBRUARY 2024--and I called on 9/26/2023. She said, go to the hospital. [And be treated by a GP doctor/fellow who's not an opthalmologist. Um, no. I've done that before, fellow/resident had no idea, sent me back to the opthalmologist.] The other issue is perennial: the 90% of the admin staff are awful. Although the main issue of no appointments isn't their fault, don't address me as if I don't understand English, i.e. "I said ... Go.... to.... the... hospital...") It's disrespectful, condescending, and doesn't accomplish anything but piss people off. read more

This is specific to the Neurology section of MFA. My partner's neurologist referred him for an evaluation in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. [[HIGHLIGHT]]He was given a date a month in advance and was told there would be several contacts prior to the admission. None occurred.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] He had been given a written description of the program that included several contact telephone numbers. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We had questions and called all of the numbers. No one ever answered and no voicemail ever resulted in callbacks.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We gave up. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Then the hospital called on the appointment date and asked where he was. We cancelled and asked to reschedule.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]MFA did call back to reschedule but the nurse had no explanation for the lack of contact.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]She promised a followup email within two days. My review like MANY others does not reflect the doctors in the Dermatology Department. This also only reflects the DC location. The now permanently closed Bethesda office was always a treat for me. I loved that entire staff, going there and contacting them was just easy. I finally pulled the plug on receiving care here in DC. After a year and a half of putting up with the beyond rude staff, namely the reception and call center staff I had had enough. After being given the run around from everything to a making a simple appointment to prior authorizations. There is little to NO interactions between the doctors and the rude staff because they both contradict themselves. I often wait 2-3 days for a call back from yet another rude staff member just to schedule an appointment in a 25 second phone call. There is nothing more stressful than an office where the gate keepers are just awful awful, uncaring individuals. I hope one day there is a massive overhaul and change in this location as it seems like a huge waste of incredible doctors when you have countless reviews on Yelp and Google making it incredibly clear that there is a rampant attitude problem with the staff. To anyone in a position like me to find other specialist doctors, I hope you do so because life is already looking up for me at my new doctors office. Don't let the copy and paste reply "As a patient, your concerns are important to us. We want to help you solve your problem in a timely way." I've always had great experiences during my visits at GW but the only downside is the rotating door with Nurse Practitioners. Since going to GW, I've had three. Thankfully they're all amazing but it sucks because you build a bond with them for years and then one day you find out that they're no longer with the hospital. Since COVID-19, I will say that I'm not a fan of the rotational schedule because chances are you may not be able to get an appointment with your actual NP. The staff is always welcoming and the wait times aren't typically that long but can be if they're very busy. I feel as though when I talk to the NPs, they're attentive and concerned about my health and well being. They make the environment very comfortable and give great advice. If you're looking for a place to go to for women's health needs, I definitely recommend them. read more

I encountered a rude receptionist who acted as if she was inconvenienced by taking my call. I was given a date for orientation and then she hung up on me. Ok, everyone is entitled to a bad day. The day of the orientation, I have no Zoom link. I called to get it and got more attitude... no thank you. Dr Robert Dean in Urology was fantastic! He took time to answer all of my questions and give me the root causes of issues after taking the time to get a full case history. He ordered an important test for me, gave me supplement and product recommendations, and a physical exam to make sure all was well. His Executive Coordinator Destini Gooden was fantastic as well- she always gave prompt responses, was organized about adding any labs I sent to my file for Dr Dean to quickly access. Every time I've tried to contact the office directly, I keep getting redirected and it's been incredibly frustrating to talk with anyone. Only option to speak with your doctor is by leaving a message in the patient portal. My doctor also left GW MFA before her planned last day so my messages were ignored. I called and the administrators had no idea that she left the practice. Regardless of the quality of the doctors, the absolute lack of communication isn't worth it. I came here to write a review on my experience in attempting to book a derm appointment with Dr. DeLuca and am not surprised to see all the negative reviews from other patients. Dr. DeLuca was recommended to me from a friend. There were a number of things I was considering for my appointment, including: annual check, mole removal, and laser hair removal. When I called to set-up the appointment, I was immediately placed 'on hold'. There was no answer, just an immediate re-direct to being placed 'on hold'. I was 'on hold' for 10+ minutes before the receptionist answered. I knew immediately that this was not going to go smoothly as the receptionist seemed completely put-out and bothered to be responding to any calls. I explained the purpose of my call and started asking a few follow-up questions, particularly about the device they use for lasering. She immediately cut me off and said she didn't know anything about the lasers and if I wanted a mole removal I would have to do it in a separate appointment. I then mentioned that I at least needed information on the type of laser used at the office because I wasn't going to book an annual with this doctor not knowing whether or not it was the type of laser I was interested in. She put me 'on hold' and then came back a few minutes later saying the 'girl' who had the information on lasers was out and I should call back later, "like an hour", if I wanted more information. I don't mind the give and take in interactions with business, but come on- you can't gather the information for me and call ME back? The whole experience in just attempting to book was bothersome. Why would I trust this facility when their front-facing staff are rude and don't give an F about their job or your clinic. GTFO. I've been going to this clinic for at least a dozen years. I used to be satisfied with it but my primary care physicians kept leaving. I am now considered a new patient and no real doctors will see me, even specialists I have gone to regularly. The best they will do now is set up an appointment with whatever resident is available and I have to wait weeks or months even if I have a current medical problem. Their solution is to refer me to their urgent care facilities, which negates the point of having a primary care physician. Even when I go to an appointment, I feel like the service is assembly-line caliber. I don't understand the point of going to medical school if you're not interested in patients. I understand that there is a shortage of primary care physicians and many doctors are choosing to cut back hours or retire. This clinic is an example of how the health-care system is failing. Don't waste your time if you're a new patient or they consider you a new patient even though you're not. read more

First off, I need to put this out there because when people use Yelp to express concerns and share their experience about a particular business or establishment and those supervisors, managers, or owners who respond and DO NOT have any intention of solving the problem, are the biggest problem here. In my last review, I rated the physicians and not the employees, well today the employees rating is way below zero in my opinion and the physician rating is ZERO stars. The fellows/individual who saw me for my appointment was rude, she did not introduce herself. Instead she was more concerned about my camera not being on. I had to ask why am I not speaking to the doctor who I'm supposed see? Neither her or the doctor never bothered to review my record before my appointment and disappointment with that over six months ago yet they said here wasting time and asking redundant questions. He said he would have his medical assistant contact the vendor and do what they need to do, but instead this chick called me 2 days ago for me to get the fax number for this vendor for her. If not that then I am supposed to log into my cart and leave the fax number there for her. Well, why would I have a fax number handy? This applies to the office they took over in Silver Spring (fka Cameron Medical). I had been going there more than 11 years with the same prescription since I've started . When asked to come in for a physical, I always do so, but if it's been more than a year since the last, they make sure I have enough prescribed through the next appointment. Two weeks ago, my pharmacy texts me my physician refused to renew my prescription. I get a call from the office saying I have to come in for a physical. I immediately say I can schedule and they schedule it for late October (first appointment they have available). Then I'm told I need a medication management telehealth appointment because the doctor refused to continue my prescription without seeing me because I was last in over two years ago, in May 2020. I immediately said I had a physical there in August 2021 (I had medical records through their online system that definitively proved that I was there in August 2021). The person on the phone said she'd let the doctor know that I was there in person a year ago so I can get another prescription to last me until my October 2021 physical. I told them on the phone I was down to my last few pills and needed it refilled soon. I hear nothing. On Saturday, I ask my pharmacy to again request a refill. Crickets. On Monday morning I call the office again because I'm down to 4 pills and getting agitated (I suffer from severe depression (with a brother who committed suicide) so the idea of not having my medications is quite scary ). I am told the doctor was informed I'd been in in August 2021 and had not authorized a refill and there was nothing the person on the phone can do but put another note for the doctor. I asked for a follow up so I know it's been done and was told to call back at 4pm. I call back and get told that the doctor wouldn't authorize my prescription because it was more than 2 years since i was last seen. I again say I was seen in August 2021, as evidenced by my medical records. Then they transfer me to a manager who says the doctor insists I haven't been there in two years (and put in her notes that I refused a medication appointment) and I have to make a telemedicine appointment for a prescription renewal. I say that this is ridiculous as I clearly was there a year earlier and this seems like a ploy to get an extra copay out of me when I have an annual physical already scheduled for a month later but because the office manager insisted I had to make an appointment, I set one up (and told them to cancel my physical, as soon as I got my prescription, I'd find a new provider). This morning I go to this telemedicine appointment. First, the doctor ( Sheikh Bidora) is 15 minutes later (understand I'm sitting waiting at a computer and can't do anything else while I'm waiting). I call and am told she's with someone else and I have to wait another 15 minutes and I'm like if you're going to be late, why can't you just call me when she's ready and I'll sign in then.... obnoxious to have me waiting an unknown duration of time for a telehealth appointment rather than just have me sign in when she's ready. It made it clear they do not value my time. Then she gets on the screen and I tell her that I just want my medication refilled. She says I hadn't been seen since May 2020. I say that is not true, look at my chart, I was there in August 2021. She says, that wasn't a physical so you weren't here, no one signed your chart. I say, I have no idea who signed what but i was there, look at the records, I was diagnosed with hemorrhoids, do you think I examined my own butt and diagnosed myself? She starts asking me the name of the doctor, I said I don't remember, and she chides me for not knowing the doctor's name (like I should know a doctor would fail to sign a record). I tell her I feel like she's gaslighting me by saying I hadn't been in since May 2020 when I was there August 2021. She threatens to end the appointment and not prescribe my meds. So I shut up because I need my meds.Then she insists that anyway it's been more than a year so I had to come in. I said, I was willing to, the first appointment was in October, I just wanted medication to last until then. She says, I can't do that, I've never seen you before. I said, but I've been with this office for over 11 years I can't help it if the office got all new doctors. I am out of space but suffice it to say that any medical provider who would deny a patient with mental health issues a prescription for anti-depressants (the same ones that patient has been taking more than 11 years since being with that office) should have their credentials questioned. I had an amazing experience at the GW MFA physical therapy. My physical therapist, Jose, was incredibly kind and thoughtful. This review is referring to the GW MFA rheumatology. The worst patient experience I've ever had trying to book an appointment. First, they said I had to send over my bloodwork and referral (even though with my insurance, I shouldn't need a referral, but fine). I sent my referral and blood work over via fax twice WITH a confirmation and they kept saying "we never got it". But then suddenly a week later they "found it" and called me. I made an appointment but then I had to reschedule. The got my message (which I left over a week in advance) saying I need to reschedule and they just rescheduled me for a time and date without even asking me, then told me "you didn't show up to an appointment" that I didn't even know about it. I found out about this missed appointment when they returned my call which took almost TWO WEEKS despite them saying "we will call you back within 48 hours". God forbid you get disconnected- you can't EVER call them back - you're always forced to leave a message which they won't return for DAYS to WEEKS. The workers have a horrible attitude as well. Avoid if possible. The level of care I received was subpar, the billing is insane and the customer service representatives are rude.

I was a patient of Dr. Joshi, he provided great care and information, however, his meetings are rushed through, he seems to have better patients to work with, or at least that's what he made me feel. His front desk staff barely gets up from their seats. They don't tell you anything unless they're asked. I was scheduled a surgery appointment, which I anticipated for 2 years. The staff email was not written in a professional manner, their office number does not display the caller ID which seems like a freaking prankster. I was told that my surgery was canceled by the hospital but not their office. I was surprised and so was the hospital staff, they didn't know the reason and asked if I was informed. I called the office to get the answer that my insurance was not going to cover for surgery so they simply cancel it, rather than letting me know, rather than asking if I was willing to pay for it, which I saved up to have the surgery done. I asked the staff if I take care of the payment will the surgery be on the same day as I don't have much time left before my classes start, and she said no. I called the insurance and they said Dr. Joshi is not in network, the rep asked me, "Didn't they tell you that?" I seriously don't know what to say, I have no time left for the surgery because I relied the professionalism of this office. Don't waste your time here. read more

Give up now. They may have the best doctors in the world, but no one answers the phone or returns a voice mail. Ever. You will wait weeks for a response. Look at the thousands of other reviews here saying the same thing. It's a problem they appear to have no intention of fixing. read more

GW Medical exemplifies the dysfunction of the American medical system. It's a behemoth provider with a non-responsive, unaccountable bureaucracy and some of the highest fees in the area. I have had a number of healthcare providers in my lifetime, and have never encountered the administrative incompetence and lack of empathy that plagues GW Medical. I stuck with GW Medical for over two years because I was reluctant to take on the hassle of changing providers. But GW Medical is actually pretty terrible at even basic functions. In the past year, GW Medical has repeatedly ignored two different pharmacies that have contacted them about refilling some common medications. Each time, I had to call several times to press the refill requests, which GW Medical staff mostly ignored. GW Medical is also terrible at communicating. I called to request a refill, which GW Medical agreed to, but then they changed their minds, rejected the refill, and never bothered to tell me. I had to wait and follow up with the pharmacy and GW Medical staff several times to figure out what was going on. Then GW Medical staff would only approve a refill dosage that wasn't even covered by my insurance. As a result, I experienced a long gap in my medication and finally just gave up and paid out of pocket for the refill. That was the last straw, and I am changing providers to avoid any more stress and expense due to GW Medical's inability to get its act together. I know other patients have had similar experiences and have also switched providers. Don't make my mistake. Avoid GW Medical! read more

AVOID like the plague! Where to start? Got charged copay for a preventative visit / annual physical, improperly. Dr. Provost nattered away about a test that I'm not due for until mid 40s. I'm in my 30s and had nothing remotely relevant to it in my history. She boasted about how she gets her husband extra Epipens to be on the safe side, but messed up my dose and ordered a child size, then was totally nonresponsive before & after the holidays when I tried to correct & get an ADULT size of an emergency lifesaving Epipen! She ordered SOOOO MANY tests I don't need, without my approval. More tests than in my last 2-3 physicals combined. She also did not take my history correctly and wrote a past issue down as a current issue. Then, I was in administrative hell between their lackadaisical front office clinic & central GW billing team, each passing the buck and blaming the other. Billing stated my labs were not properly put down as preventative. Clinic took days to contact me to finally say to call LabCorp. LabCorp rep told me the insurance was done correctly, the doctor just went hog wild with testing. Typical academic doctor relying on a glut of data rather than critical clinical/exam skills. There's also a phantom "telephone visit" in my chart on a day I was never contacted. I'm stuck with a $$ lab bill and being strung along by GWU Patient Experience (a joke of a name). Folks - if you are healthy and just need an annual physical, STAY AWAY! Don't be saddled with a big lab bill & hours wasted dealing with this incompetent, uncaring, unprofessional business. My spouse, who is healthy too, also got an unexpected bill after specifically telling Dr. Provost only to do tests covered by insurance. LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES AND GO ELSEWHERE!
