Whitman Walker's Walk to End HIV (2017)
 Dignity Washington's group

Whitman Walker truly provides excellent medical, dental, and behavioral care to our traditionally under-served and often maligned LGBT community. Many of us literally would not be on this planet, I being one of them, were it not for seeing just the right W-W folks when I had some very "wrong times." For many years, there was a sign in the medical waiting area that said, "We don't see patients. We see you." So true. I always felt they saw me as a person, not as the next payer to be perfunctorily checked, then sent on my way with pills and a bill. Over the years, I've made ample use of Whitman Walker's medical, dental, and behavioral care, starting with visits to the legendary and indispensable Elizabeth Taylor men's health clinic at 14th & R St. NW. Thanks so much for the always compassionate reception I received during my first difficult years coming out. No lectures. No telling me bland "It will get better" nothings when I arrived in one of those moods to yell at someone, anyone on a few really bad days that I recall. Rather, it was what I needed, a place to vent a bit to people who knew that all of us have days like that. Then, time and space to calm down, and talk about what might help next time. So reassuring to me was the underlying, if unspoken, premise that there would be a "next time" for me -where things could be better. I've seen the bash jobs on pharmacy service, appointment scheduling, and other frustrations in dealing with the front office admin functions. I agree that they will not get 5 stars there from me, either. However, I seriously doubt if those so quick to give out the one stars have dealt much with other medical practices in our area or any other. I have, extensively, in 50 years as an adult. From specialists to hospitals to primary care physicians, waiting on hold while the washer completes a full clothes cycle and having to navigate arcane call handling menus are the norms. However, with Whitman Walker, once a live person answers, real help is soon on the way. But then, I also don't tend to get snarky with the person who picks up the phone after a long wait listening to Muzak's Top 100. I don't fathom how yelling at any person who is supposed to help one motivates or helps them, in any way, to do so, as opposed to if one tried being nice. In fact, having seen so many others do the "off with her head" bit, the yelling often makes the poor target so nervous about being yelled at again, that he/she can't muster concentration needed to do the task at hand. Also it totally escapes me, why, after a long time on hold, some even brag about giving the person who eventually answers a hard time - as if he/she had caused the wait in any way, or had any influence whatsoever with respect to implementing or changing the call handling system that all - patients, doctors, and operators alike, .are constrained to use. As for the pharmacy, there are often around 5 or so folks seated in the waiting area and a few more in line at the pickup windows. Yes, milk and cookies would be nice while we wait. But I can see the yelps from the "One-star" crowd now: They were too hard, too soft, or were "skimpy" with the chocolate chips in each cookie." Wait times do not seem different than at CVS, Walgreens, or any number of places I know in the 'burbs. Lines generally move steady, with a few "waits from hell" on rare occasions. That is, unless some genius forgets to do what each of us needs to do as a patient going for pickup: Have Insurance cards, ID, money/credit card READY Not "somewhere" in a big purse, stuffed "somewhere" in a wallet or pocket, possibly still in a car parked a block away - maybe still "somewhere" at home. I personally think the pharmacy aides should get combat pay when yelled at by customers over insurance info that the customer "couldn't" find or simply chose not to bring. And yes, CURRENT cards - that have not expired. I personally would like to know on what planet those customers live, where the first thing requested when they go ANYWHERE for ANY medical service is not to see insurance cards. But still, so many go to the counter, where they moan, they whine, they yell. The whole world picks on them. Just them. Yes, in a "perfect" world, the front office admin functions at Whitman Walker could stand to have gobs of TLC slathered over them. But so could just about every one of the front offices of the 50 or so doctors, pharmacies, and other medical offices I've visited-over many years. The difference is - once one gets past the front office, which is not that difficult for the minimally patient, one gets high quality medical care that is not dispensed according to some truly hateful social norms that are out there. I've been to W-W many times for so many serious and not-so-serious things over a decade or more. That's more than enough to draw a pretty accurate baseline. Never I have been mistreated or ignored. Never have I received inattentive or less than fully competent care.

Deficiency in Pharmacy pickups. On average, the line takes 5-9 minutes to process each pick up. You need to expect very slow moving lines.

I wanted to call to see if I could come in for a quick blood work lab which has never been an issue with any of the other urgent cares I have ever been to except for this one. I repeatedly had to tell them that I was not a member and that I had never been to their clinic before and their 5 combined brain cells could not understand that. I am writing this review while still on the phone. I am at 1 hour and a half with no more progress than how I started. I have been transfered at least 7 time and it seems like they do not pass along any information bc the next rep is just as clueless as the last. Then after asking why I am being transferred to much I was met with the most rude and downright disrespectful rep I have ever had the un fortune of speaking to. I am trying to figure out if my cancer is back and now that vile woman has put me on hold with no end in site for 10 minutes. If you are going for a quick check or needed life saving care DO NOT trust these bastards. This has been by far the worst experience I have ever had and I went through 8 rounds of chemo.

The office staff are very responsive over the phone/email and in person and helpful too. Dr. Loomis spent a full hour with me during my first visit (the initial visit being a video call according to their pandemic procedures), more than the allotted 45 minutes! (Maybe it's because I already knew him from his public appearances and had a lot to chat with him about, as well as a lot of health questions.) He definitely knows a lot about nutrition (this being a specialty of Barnard Medical Center), but is knowledgeable about medical issues all around as well. He helped diagnose a significant vitamin D deficiency in me and prescribed a supplement. He also referred me to specialists for other issues. My second visit was an in-person physical exam, and again, he went above and beyond the typical standard for physicals. I'm so lucky to live in the DC area!

In the meantime, they instructed me to go to Urgent Care or the ER! Several other times, owing to minor issues such as ear infections and conjunctivitis, they insisted I do a Telehealth appointment or otherwise, go to Urgent Care or the ER. Further, annual physicals have not been comprehensive. Moreover, for my first physical with Barnard Medical, they assigned a medical student to conduct it, in its entirety (w/o any other doctors present). In addition, this was despite the fact that I had requested, in writing in my medical records, that I did not agree to be seen by medical students. It appears as if the doctors rarely even come into the office! The lovely Nurse Practitioner, Kristine, is the gem that seems to hold the office together! She shows both care and concern, and although there is a lag time to see her, too, at least you can get an appointment with her in person (eventually).
