I am above all things fair. My concerns about MedStar were multifold. My primary concern was billing. MedStar wrote off the bill. They should have I can now give them the four star review that they would otherwise deserve. I want to say that I commend the office of the CEO in having people with the capacity to respond, get back to me. Most of the time people complain about hospitals and healthcare systems. They're dealing with somebody in patient relations who has very little authority. MedStar had one of their higher working executives get back to me to address my concerns. I commend them on that. Note to moderators: I did not change this review in exchange for money. It may appear that way. The billing concerns were a central aspect of my concerns. I went for preoperative appointment 4/7/2026 to prepare for my upcoming surgery. It was a great first appointment. What was not great was getting a call at 8:29am 4/10/2026 to tell me they forgot to get my $20 co-pay and request to take a credit card payment over the phone. I work evenings and was pissed. Even if I did not work at night, who calls patients at 8:29am to request payment???? I told her that I was sleep and would call back. UPDATE Immediately after speaking to me, she decided to charge whatever card I had on file because at 8:36am an email was sent to me with a receipt telling me they processed a payment on my credit card for $20. Something is seriously wrong here. I frequently get emails and other advertising about Medstar wanting to serve all my medical needs. But don't try to see a primary care doc when you are actually sick. Schedulers just tell you to go to urgent care or ER. Need a physical? Plan for a 6 month wait. I scheduled a physical 6 months ago. They texted me to cancel it 40 minutes before the appointment. When they called to reschedule, they said the next available appointment is in August- another 6 months. This is after they canceled my last appointment in December with no real explanation. I have been a Medstar patient for a long time, and they just get worse and worse. In fairness, I will say that my PCP, when I can actually get in to see him, is great! read more

Came in for a mammogram appointment. Overcrowded small waiting area, grumpy reception staff. Arrived at 9:07 am for 8:30 appointment. Had to wait for 1 hour! ( was called in at 10:07). I would understand this long wait time for a walk in X ray appointment but for a timed mammogram appointments, one hour of waiting time in a cramped waiting area is not acceptable. It is either inefficient staff or inefficient system. Inside radiology, after you change in the gown, I was told to take all my clothing with me ( winter coat included), no bag was provided, I had to stuff multiple pieces of my clothing into the sleeve of my coat, carrying all of it in one hand and holding the gown opening with my other hand. Waited again in a small sitting area with an empty water fridge. Then I was hailed in, the technician didn't ask my name , only birthday date. After the procedure the technician didn't take me back to the dressing room, there were multiple doors, was not sure which one to use. The whole experience was quite bizarre in comparison with other multiple mammograms I"ve had. Do not get sucked into the MedStar system, their employees don't listen, are rude - I had a broken shoulder and one of their staff told me "It's not that bad, get over it!" The policy is to keep you just sick enough that they can keep funnelling you into the next system - PT, pain management, anything to keep you paying. Can you get a follow-up with the doctor? No, he doesn't have any appts this year. Can you get your records released so you get a second opinion, no, you need to fill out a form, what form? They don't have that either. Stay away. read more

The "nurse" cared more for her than me. I was in pain ,or I wouldn't be there. I was fasting from food water and pain medication. She made it worse by making me stand when I was there for foot surgery for longer than I can manage, reason for surgery. She took photos of me. I did not sign off on this. The med student was giving me instructions while she was slapping my arm. How I was supposed to hear any instructions with someone willingly hurting me. Someone needed to be there to watch this staff and how I was being treated like a piece of meat. Was this an emergency? It became one once she stuck me with a needle she doesn't know how. read more

MedStar doesn't seem to capable of manage communications via their portal or by phone in any consistent or reliable manner--I generally get slow or no responses from my primary care physician. I have to leave multiple portal messages and call and hope for any response at all. It can take over a week even though they say they will respond within 48 hours. read more

I attended the Radiology Department at Lafayette Center for an X-ray of my knee following a fall. The reception staff were brusque and uninterested - not quite rude but nearly. The radiologist was pleasant and efficient. A few days later, the problem was that I could see the X-ray pictures on the app but I could not find the radiologist's report to interpret them. I made 6 calls to the department to ask how I could get the report and each one went to voicemail. I left messages requesting a call back but no one called. Eventually, I asked the main switchboard to put me through and to stay on the line until someone had answered, on the assumption that the staff do not care to respond to the public but might answer calls from within the organization. My hunch was correct and this time, the 7th call, a human answered. This particular human was however unsure where I should look to find the radiologist report but, having been assured that there was one, some considerable time later I managed to find it on the chaotic Medstar app myself. So, all in all, Medstar Lafayette Center can manage to take X-rays but has real problems in managing the associated human interactions. ADDITIONAL COMMENT FOLLOWING MEDSTAR'S RESPONSE: This bland and anonymous corporate response provides me with the opportunity to point out that I tried to contact the relevant Patient Advocacy office for Lafayette Center. The switchboard operator spent some considerable time looking for it - and checked with her manager. She reported that they could find no way of contacting anyone in management other than through a feedback form. So - here is a challenge for the anonymous Business Customer Service person (or bot) who responded to my review. Please post your name, job title and phone number - and provide specific advice on what to do in real time when Medstar, yet again, declines to provide a reasonable service. read more

If you are in need of a urologist, I strongly urge you to AVOID Daniel Marchalik with this group. Dr. Marchalik failed to see that my massive kidney stone had in fact NOT passed, could not be bothered to answer any of my questions, and was largely dismissive of my pain and anxieties. After months of pain, seeing other doctors, and finally surgery to remove the stone he missed -- Dr. Marchalik sent me to collections over a $20 copay. It would be comical how difficult it is to get help at MedStar, if it weren't for the financial consequences I have to suffer due to their inability to get paperwork submitted in a timely manner, be it to insurance or LabCorps. For example, I've messaged and called MedStar so many times forwarding the instructions sent by my insurance. They love to put the ball back in my court telling me to check with my pharmacy/insurance. Of course I do my due diligence every and double check with my insurance each time before reaching out to MedStar to re-confirm that indeed they haven't received the documentation. This has been very time consuming as calling MedStar means waiting on hold, and sending a message means you may not hear back for days if at all. It's been literally months and as of now they still haven't gotten the form in. This is just one example of several instances of poor and untimely communication. It's too bad because the doctor is great, but it's not worth having to navigate this fortress. read more

That's fine, except when the reception staff takes a simultaneous 1.5 hour lunch break with no notification other than a hastily scribbled note taped to the 8th floor front desk. MedStar Physical Therapy at Lafayette Centre is the best in the DC region. After my second spine surgery, I went through a pretty exhaustive search to find the right PT Clinic for me and my needs. Since my surgery was during the peak of COVID and I had plenty of time on my hands, I wanted to approach rehab with a mindset as if I was a high level athlete again. As the Lafayette Clinic serves many top professional athletes in the region, they were the perfect fit in terms of personnel, programming, and facilities. If you are (or were) a high level athlete and are tired of the same 10-15 isometric, accessory movements that 95% of PT Clinics cycle through, this is the place for you. I worked with Karen (Clinic Director) and Chris for the majority of my time there and couldn't recommend both more highly. Karen runs a tight ship and helped properly evaluate my condition and put in place a solid plan of attack. Chris is a wealth of knowledge and, with a lifting background, he was able to move me into bigger, compound movements that I absolutely needed to progress in my recovery. Huge facility, big turf area used for baseball, soccer, and golf rehab. Half basketball court with state of the art motion capture technology. Zero-gravity treadmill, multiple squat racks, tonal resistance machine, high-fidelity gait assessment software. Squeaky clean bathrooms, showers, and dressing facilities. Cannot recommend the clinic enough, 10/10! read more

Love my doctor. Management critically needs to invest in more staff: it is nearly impossible to get an appointment. I had to wait 2 hours for a scheduled telehealth appointment. Calls do not get returned, including for medication matters. Paperwork does not get sent. Every time I go, everyone looks busy and overworked. The staff that is there appears quite dedicated; it seems more that there has been a corporate decision to prioritize profits over service. read more

This place has the weirdest check-in procedure I've ever seen. At least other than for federal buildings, but that's what it felt like. You go in, and are directed to a sign in desk where they give you a bracelet and info on the floor to which you'll go. Then an elevator attendant directs you there, facilitating the different elevators -- not sure if this is just a covid thing or not. Then you get to the floor and fill out some paperwork, and see a specialist. Honestly everyone with whom I dealt was friendly and helpful, including the specialist (a GI doctor), but it seems they are understaffed for demand--if I had needed to reschedule the appointment, it wouldn't have been till February(!). So, the inconvenience of scheduling and the weird check in procedure makes me dock them a star. read more

As others have mentioned, it takes an unreasonable amount of time to get results. I have to call them over 10 days after my MRI to even have the results sent to my Doctor....by MAIL in another state. The receptionist was very warm and helpful and I had a short wait time but otherwise it was not a good experience. Also hard to find, it's around the corner from where the front entrance is and then you go down to the bottom floor. They got the job done. I had to call three times to have my results sent over, but if I didn't call, they wouldn't have been received in time. The staff wasn't overly friendly, just standard. Brenda checked me in and Neyin performed my ultrasound. There's not great parking. They do have a lot but it is much pricier compared to park-mobile. Lastly, the out-of-pocket due came in higher than the estimate. read more

To me my health is super important and that's why I come here. The staff is super nice, friendly and out going. Everytime I have gone, I didn't wait no more then 10 minutes until I was seen. My first visit, I was filling out paperwork and literally in 5 minutes I was called. Haha awesome! Also, the office smells good and it's always clean. OH, and the great part is that the elevators open up right to office. That's cool! And I got my lab work that same day there. What else do you need? HA! Oh and Dr. Anderson I must say is by far the best thus far. He explains everything very thorough and makes sure you understand. The location is great. Hated it! I really should not have rated it at all. I arrived early. I was kept waiting in the lobby for over an hour. When I was called back to finally see the doctor, I was kept waiting another hour. I was asked to remove my pants and put on shorts. I was told that X-rays would be taken. I was very cold so I asked for a blanket, but was given a sheet which was not sufficient. No one ever came into my room during that hour to say the doctor was running behind. As a matter of fact, no one ever told me the wait would be at least two hours In total. I was watching and everyone who came in after I did got waited on before me. EVERYONE! I felt totally taken advantage of and the staff showed no interest. As I waited for Doctor Svoboda,I was very cold and very uncomfortable. I waited so long I fell asleep on the examining room table in the room. When he finally arrived, he came in very loud and commanding. He asked me how I was feeling and before I could finish telling him he was over-talking me. He finally slowed down for a minute and asked, "what did you say"? I told him I was very cold and very uncomfortable. He never apologized for my wait or anything else. He talked the entire time. He never stopped to ask me if I had any questions. He addressed arthritis, however he never mentioned the cyst on the back of my knee until I raised my hand to ask a question. No one had mentioned arthritis so I was wondering why he didn't address the cyst. Again, he proceeded to talk and just bombarded me with information. Again, I raised my hand to ask a question. He said I didn't have to raise my hand, however I felt that was he only way to get his attention. I felt as if he had a game plan when he arrived that did not require my input. I called today (202-416-2000 RX line) to get a prescription refill because I am having heart palpitations and communicated this to Helena S., the representative who spoke to me regarding my prescription. I informed Helena of the two medications I've taken in the past for this issue and asked if she could check my file/chart. She stated she couldn't find it in the chart and insisted that I had to get the bottle.This information should be in my chart. She also wouldn't connect me with my primary care office front desk so I could get the information. Given I am at work and actively having palpitations, this is awful that they have unhelpful staff that can't assist with this simple task especially for patients experiencing symptoms. read more

Find a Doctor Who is not in MedSTAR. I was having stomach problems; it turns out the lining of my stomach was hurt by the medicine I took for my rheumatoid arthritis. I found a gastroenterologist at Lafayette Center. I was prescribed omeprazole and as it's now beginning to run out I needed a refill. The pharmacy told me to call the doctor. I called and followed the links and was sent to a dead end and told in a message on the phone to go to the MedSTAR website. I went to the website and my old password did not work. I followed the directions to set up a new password. When I finally got to the MedSTAR app I was told I could not enter without an invitation. A dead end. I called the surgery center, and was finally transferred to a live person who transferred me to someone who could actually renew my prescription. Whoever is in charge of the phone system, the online MedSTAR system, and whatever else along those communication lines, is failing miserably. As a patient I am a customer and I could not get through. When I finally got to speak to the front desk person I was told that the machine was broken and that I would have to come back another day. So let me say that my experience with everyone except 1 person was 5 stars. I am going to talk to the office manager about the experience I received from the woman in X-ray was inappropriate. I am going to just say, you don't ask someone to remove their undergarment and there is a man in the room behind the window without pulling the curtain or creating any privacy. I didn't realize he was there until I stood up and realized someone was there and when I heard it was a man's voice my eyes welled up with tears. I wasn't asked to put on a gown before I went into the room. So as we get ready for the first X-ray, she asks...do you have on a bra? Well of course I do! I don't come out of the house with a bra! Thankfully (though I shouldn't have had to worry about it), because it was cold, I didn't just expose myself and with a frozen shoulder, did my best to remove my bra "on the spot" since she asked me right before they were going to do the Xray. After the X-rays, she asks, if I want to put my bra back on. HUH? Still without a place of privacy to put it back on. Right. I just kindly told her I couldn't with a man in the room that could see me and that I could have exposed myself without knowing he could see me and that was inappropriate on her part and unprofessional. So I have to wonder, does she think that is okay for everyone, or just me. Would she think that would be acceptable to her or is she disconnected when actually, geographically, we are one and the same? I felt disrespected and as a woman, my privacy disregarded. I thought she was the only one in the room and was still being discrete, but if there was a slight exposure, I would not have felt so bad. Anyone who has gotten a mammogram knows what I mean. This is why the 4 stars overall. 5 stars to everyone from the front desk to the assistant to the woman who came in the parking lot to find me to give me my PT prescription because I just wanted to leave after my cortisone shot, to the wonderful doctor that I researched extensively and selected. Everyone was great. Even the scribe and clinician who I instructed to please not let me see the needle. People were professional and friendly. The X-ray assistant was professional and friendly...just, unfortunately, a bit thoughtless. This office is one of the best I have been to in Washington, DC. I love the parking and location from the parking garage. I love the process and protocol in the office and everyone's personality and attitude. As long as my doctor is there, so will I until I am back on the golf course. I was looking for a younger orthopedic specialist than the one I went to for my knee so that I don't have to worry about finding someone else as I age. I love my older doctors because of their experience and thank God I found a great doctor with the experience that I feel confident in and quite frankly my other "mature" doctors approved of. I would recommend this office for people that are looking for a solid medical experience that makes sense. Simply put...a waste of time. Scheduled an appointment for 8:30am for an MRI but they weren't ready by 9am! Arrived, as requested, at 8am to complete paperwork. At 8:28 taken back to change. Was told it would be a few minutes as the tech was running behind. By 9am had not been seen any further and so I left without the MRI. This is my second time at a medstar facility to only sit and wait despite arriving before time for my appointment. Clearly the company culture does not value its patients time. read more

All my doctors are now at Lafayette Center and I am happy with everyone so far, especially the wonderful LabCorp (I am a hard stick), and the pros there are so swift and painless with the needles, and so professional, I will never go anywhere else! The check in is a bit odd but everyone treats me well and I never had to wait long for my appointments. I like it so much I try to schedule all my doctors there, including my PT. There are a few buildings at Lafayette square that house multiple doctor's buildings. Driving to Lafayette Square can be a challenge but metro is easy. There is also a circulator bus 2 blocks away. Make sure you know the building number and floor number of your appointment. It is easy to confuse them. Knowing your doctor's number can make your visit smoother. There are so many practices that they don't all know each other. I have called the switchboard and spoken to a receptionist who didn't know my doctor. Ask for the department or doctor you are visiting. The waiting office is comfortable. read more

Worst medical experience ever. Checking into the building is like walking into a dungeon. Scheduling was done by a 3rd party call center. Dermatologists keep leaving the medstar system so when I finally rescheduled 3 times more than 8 months later, doctors did not know why I had an appointment. I told doctors that a treatment was already tried in the past and did not work but they prescribed it anyway to desperately finish the appointment. read more

Made an appointment to see her, drove all the way to DC from Burke VA to be told at appointment time that she will see my mom virtually not in person. My mother is 75 years old it is already risky for her to come to a hospital for anything with Covid happening. We could have been told the virtual option BEFORE We drove all the way over by the Children's Hospital office for this doctor not to mention wasting 3 hours of our time. I would give cardiologist Dr. Joel Rosenberg 4-5 stars, if he want in this office. He is knowledgeable and generally easy to talk with. The office is clean and nicely appointed. And appointments are generally on time. HOWEVER I cannot communicate with him. No matter what telephone number they give me, I cannot reach anyone directly. I leave voice messages IF I can at least reach voice mail. Often I just get never ending ringing. And when I use their online platform, it's really no more effective. I will be changing cardiologists just so I can have one I can actually reach. read more

Saw Dr. Casscells today at the Lafayette location on 20th St for an ankle injury. So friendly, kind, and patient in addition to being professional and very efficient. He potentially caught something that the urgent care missed in my x-ray. He made the visit as painless as possible and took the time to answer all of my questions plus pull in a colleague - Dr. Kessler, who was also super nice - for a second (hand) injury I mentioned last-minute (sorry!). Will be recommending him and Dr. Kessler to everyone I know!!! Front desk was also polite and check-in was quick. read more

My son had a septum deviation surgery here. Everything went quite well and timely. We were in and out in less than 4 hours ( including paperwork, anesthesia, operation and recovery). There is parking available under the building. Everyone from reception staff to nurses were courteous and responsive. Dr Picken was excellent. read more

This review has more to do with the office staff than the doctor I saw. Two weeks prior to my first appointment with MedStar, I needed to fill out medical release forms so that my previous doctor could transfer my med history to Dr. Singh at MedStar. I was confused about how to fill out the forms so I went into the office and asked for help. They gave me incorrect information, so that when I had my actual appointment two weeks later, my medical forms hadn't arrived. I told this to Dr. Singh, and she apologized for this, even though it wasn't her fault. After my appointment was done, I filled out new medical release forms. I needed these forms because I needed to know what vaccines to get before I traveled internationally. About two weeks later, I called MedStar and they said they still hadn't received the forms. So, I then called my previous doctor, and they said they faxed the forms the day after MedStar asked for them. Also, when I had called MedStar again, I informed them that I needed a rabies vaccine, and the nurse said they don't provide it at this location. But when I saw Dr. Singh, she told me that yes, they do provide the rabies vaccine. So who knows what's going on here. Dr. Singh was really great and attentive, I was more than happy to make her my new primary care doctor. However, the office staff at this location, while very nice, just don't seem to have their stuff together. There is definitely some miscommunication going on. Overall, it wasn't a good experience so my search for a new primary care doctor continues. read more
