Had a long standing appointment for today at 10:40 AM. I received a text this morning at 7:34 AM…read morereminding me of the appointment. Left the house for the appointment at around 9 AM. Received a voice mail at 9:13 telling me that they had canceled the appointment. I didn't find out that the appointment was cancelled until I was in the office and was told by the staff that my appointment was canceled because the referral from the VA has expired. I specifically remember at my initial appointment when Todd Williams mentioned that he wanted me back in 6 months to recheck the area on my back that he did a biopsy on, that I would probably need a new referral. He told me then that it wasn't necessary, that they would take care of that. What a colossal screw up and a waste of 2 hours of my time, not to mention the fuel expended on the 50 mile round trip.

I worked for PeaceHealth for nearly two decades, first as a CNA and then as a Registered Nurse. I loved being an emergency department trauma nurse, but in August 2023, while I was still employed by PeaceHealth, I transferred out of the Emergency Department to another department after repeatedly raising concerns about patient safety and violations of our union contract. After speaking up, I experienced what I believed was ongoing harassment and retaliation. Other staff members also reported concerns to management on my behalf, but nothing changed. On February 13, 2024, while I was still employed by PeaceHealth in a different department, I became a patient at PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center after suffering a severe dog bite to my face. I trusted the organization I had served for nearly 20 years to care for me the same way I had cared for thousands of patients. Instead, I left feeling abandoned. I was discharged with instructions to follow up with a plastic surgeon instead of being transferred for specialty care. When I called the plastic surgeon listed on my discharge paperwork, I learned he no longer worked for PeaceHealth. I was left scrambling to find the care I needed while recovering from a traumatic facial injury. While I was home trying to heal, I later learned that a nurse allegedly used a personal cell phone to screenshot private photographs of my injuries from my personal Facebook account. Those photographs, which showed me as a patient, were reportedly sent to my former Emergency Department manager and then circulated internally through unencrypted company email. As both a nurse and a patient, I was devastated. Following my union's advice, I filed a privacy complaint. That decision changed my life. Rather than feeling protected as an employee and patient, I felt like I became the problem. My health information, my trauma, and my experience as a patient became intertwined with my employment. Eventually, I experienced what my attorney described as a constructive discharge. I lost the career I had devoted nearly 20 years to building. I lost my home. I lost my financial security. I was forced to leave Washington, uproot my life, and move away from my family just to continue working as a nurse. I also lost additional employment opportunities after these events. My union initially advised me through this process, but later withdrew my grievances after PeaceHealth requested mediation as part of a proposed global settlement. Following the union's recommendation, I hired a private employment attorney and paid hundreds of dollars per hour for representation. A demand letter was submitted, but PeaceHealth denied any wrongdoing. My attorney then withdrew from my case. Later, through records I obtained, I discovered emails showing communication between my attorney and PeaceHealth's legal department that left me questioning whether my interests had truly been protected. The stress has permanently affected my health. I developed central serous retinopathy, a rare eye condition that my treating physicians have associated with elevated stress. I continue receiving treatment in an effort to preserve my vision. I have also been diagnosed with anxiety and major depressive disorder and underwent Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy in an effort to recover. One of the most heartbreaking moments came when my union requested my employee file. After nearly 20 years of employment, I was provided what appeared to be little more than my résumé. My performance evaluations and employment records that I expected to find were not there. It felt as though my career had simply been erased. The greatest loss has not been financial--it has been personal. I lost my confidence, my sense of purpose, and the career I believed I would retire from. There were times when the emotional pain became overwhelming. That is why stories about healthcare workers struggling with trauma resonate so deeply with me. I know what it feels like when the very system you dedicated your life to leaves you feeling unheard and alone. I am sharing my experience because I believe patients deserve safe, compassionate care, and healthcare workers deserve dignity and respect when they become patients themselves. My hope is that no one else--patient or employee--has to endure what I have experienced.

This is a non-profit medical center. Whatever that means. If you don't have health insurance, they have a "sliding scale" option. However, since a certain Congressional legislation was implemented, not sure how this "sliding scale" is going to work. They are not a "walk-in" clinic, but I did manage to get a "same day" appointment. I called at 8:00 right at opening, and was on hold for five minutes. Hmmmmmm.......... They keep a whiteboard hanging where they notify people of the wait time. At the time I came in, it was blank. However, at the 30 minute waiting point, I inquired as to why there was no information on the white board. The desk person said, "we usually wait for them to tell us" but she decided to go inquire. She then wrote "50 minutes" as the wait time. At exactly the 50 minute point (50 minutes past my appointment time), I was seen. There is a sign that says, "if you have been waiting past 15 minutes, inform someone." But the medical tech that took my vitals indicated that sign is pointless as they routinely run late. 50 minutes is the "norm." I have to give them a "thumbs up" for the fact that they did NOT ask for my SS number. There is no legal reason health care providers need your SS number.

Meanwhile I'm awake until 5:30 in the morning when, out of desperation, I drink 1/2 bottle of Nyquil. which leaves me feeling terrible every day. I've spent hundreds of dollars on supplements that don't work either. My last recourse will be trying THC washed down with some wine. The same issue with refills came up with the same RPN last year. This is totally unacceptable. The only positives about this place are their excellent Phlebotomist, several great people at the Front Desk and the Pharmacy Tech. I saw the nurse practitioner the first visit, who I did like. She ordered some x-rays. and was very empathetic. I was under the impression that this was a follow up with the doctor, who would proceed further with the course of action I had talked about (at length) in my hour visit the week prior. Boy was I wrong! This doctor entered the room early, while the nurse was still taking my vitals. He introduced his intern/ med student, by insulting her school in an awkward joke. Then he asked what I was "in there for today." He very obviously handn't even looked at my chart. But before I was able to answer fully, he launched into a loud aggravated tirade about how, "Obama ruined his ability to do his job by requiring evidence based medical treatment." He ended the lecture by staring at me and demanding that I agree with him. I tried to redirect by saying I agreed that insurance companies make it very difficult to get procedures and tests approved. Then after a short couple sentences related to the x-rays, he asked me "so where do you think your neuropathy comes from." I said, "I think it's a result of my lupus." He belly laughs," Oh you're one of the lucky whites with an autoimmune disorder." aren't you lucky! Then he started on a history lesson about the black plague in Europe, which explained why "Whites get auto immune illnesses more than THE Blacks." and How it actually comes from our superiority and adaptability through natural selection and the plague. Again he stars at me like some maniacal college professor and asks, "how did the plague travel from the east to the west? (pause) Go on! take a guess! try!" I said, "trade routs." "YES! good job!" then another few minutes of The blacks the whites and the asians.... a little cursing. Then he says," and why did whites travel so much? because we're more curious than the blacks. and because of this we're more prone to addiction. especially heroin. (looking me dead in the eye) Don't ever try heroin. Me, "ok." At this point I wanted to ask, "BUT are you on it now? Maybe they need to Pee test you." (They are very big on pee testing everyone.) He asks his intern to go see if they can find the MRI of my back. They couldn't find it. So it's another round about Obama and how "in the good old days he could just give me a shot in my back based on where the pain is in relation to his nerve chart, but now we need EVIDENCE based medicine. so there's nothing he can do today. But they'll try again to get the MRI, or maybe order a new one." and maybe they'll focus on my knee pain because that's easier, but we'll need an x-ray for that. and.... that's it. That's what my $40 copay and the hour drive to olympia got me today. I left just gobsmacked - what just happened? I'm still in disbelief. And he talked sooo fast! It was absolutely insane.

It appears this Quack is only interested in pushing narcotics. My wife and I were in shock from the lack of professionalism from Dr Vogelgesang. Had the appointment lasted any longer this A__Hole would have been picking himself off the ground.
