Some instructors are better compared to others. My daughter had a free trial class and the instructor was great. We ended up signing her up. During her actual class though she ended up with a different instructor and she was newer and didn't seem to be able to handle some of the roudier kids in the class. I expressed my concerns and my daughter was moved to a different class. We now have no issues. They have large upstairs parent viewing area with a large glass window which is great! It does get crowded quickly. They have a foam pit, trampoline, rope climbing, balance bars and so much more. We visited a few gymnastics gyms before choosing this one. read more

The GOOD: The class flexibility is GREAT!!! I say try it and you will like the fact that you can fit a class in around your schedule. I have not found a lot of facilities that have this type of variety for classes The BAD: It smells....like stinky feet. It is gross. The office staff is nice when they are collecting payments. But boy, for the most part, customer service is not at the top of their list. So much for southern hospitality. In Short: Don't use your nose. Breath through your mouth and you will be fine. :D Ignore the staff and just focus on the kids. Will we keep coming back. NO! My daughter has done a few of their 8 week sessions here between the ages of 4-6years old and Im sorry to say that I would not recommend. If you're just looking for something to do on a Saturday morning in the winter I guess it's fine but personally I would not waste your money (it's not cheap)! Regardless of the current staffing issues, my problem is when the group of girls and their coach (about 6-8 girls per coach) move to an activity such as the balance beam, bars, etc.... One girl goes at a time while the others sit and wait for about 10 minutes for their turn. Why not have them doing jumping jacks or ANYTHING to keep them moving!? They are just sitting and watching. Then, when it's finally their turn for the activity they go for about 30 seconds while their 'coach' is barely watching and I've literally never seen my daughter or really any of the other girls for that matter get any type of instruction. I presume it's different when the girls are in the more advanced levels (this is beginner) but my daughter actually wants to learn and get better. Unfortunately there is no possible way she can achieve that in this environment. Lastly, I want to note that I did address this with an employee at their front desk one day, she said she would relay the message however there haven't been any changes made. read more

This is week three for us. So far, so good. During registration, staff was very professional. They helped us find the right class for our 12yo (skill level and age-appropriate). Although, the class times we wanted (Saturday or late weekday) were filled up (shocker) the staffer was able to recommend options for us, such as enrolling in the open class and place our name on a wait list (we would have been first) for the Saturday class and that we could do a free trial to see if we like the coach and class time. We ended up enrolling in the 4pm weekday class, which wasn't ideal since my DH and I both work in Durham but the gym has WiFi. So I can work during the 2 hours waiting for my daughter and make up the time leaving work early. No problem. My 12yo likes her class and coach, who is attentive to each child's skill set. Pluses: + Large gym and plenty of apparatus to work on + Staff/coaches are professional and seem to know the kids well. They're there for the kids not for us parents and that's the way it should be. I don't need to be best friends with them. Besides, a lot goes on during the class transitions and there's just no time to be chatting with parents when you're making sure that the right kids are going home with the right parents, and the kids are going to the right coaches for class. + Free trial class + Offer summer camps, track out camps and tumbling clinics + Offer big viewing room on the second floor with picnic tables and benches, and bleachers + WiFi available All in all, I'd recommend giving Gymcarolina a try. read more

Both of my children have been enrolled here. We left because the coaches were routinely aloof, blasé, and not very focused on the kids. We came back to try it again because the location is convenient. But after one day, no way. A very young coach had my 7-year-old daughter attempt a drill that was beyond her skill level. She almost got hurt, and none of the coaches noticed. And they did not take constructive criticism well. From past experience, there is virtually zero communications with parents on curriculum, coaching points, or drills we can try at home. My children have seen little improvement after spending lots of money at this gym. This stuff ain't cheap. For the amount we pay, I would expect much higher quality coaching and at least some communication with parents on curriculum and coaching points. We will try somewhere else. read more

I really like Gymcarolina. Our teachers, Ms. Alina & Ms. Julie have been great, and my 3-year old daughter always comes home very happy. I love that you can watch the classes from the top floor. The only thing I would like to see more of is class-specific communication. My girls are also enrolled in a local dance studio and it seems like they are always receiving newsletters, class specific activity updates for the holidays, etc. I don't recall ever receiving those types of communications from gymnastics, but then again, it's probably not a fair comparison :) All in all, I'd recommend Gymcarolina to anyone with small kids who are interested in learning gymnastics. read more

This is a top notch facility. The staff is great. The facility has great equipment and they have tons of different time slots to fit your schedule. They work with kids of all different skill levels, and they all feel like they fit in. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I really wish that there was more involvement of the parents as far as the coaches at least getting to know our names. That may not be possible because the place is so big with so many classes, but my child comes 3 days a week and I still don't know any of her coaches' names and they don't know mine. She's beencoming for over a year. I'd just like that part to be a little more personable. But I have no complaints. My child thrives here. It's a great environment. Gymcarolina has been great for my daughter. We have been going there for 2.5 years and will continue. We have been in preschool classes and now on the Specialty Team. I'm thrilled with the skill level of my 5 yr old. And she loves it! They are organized, put on great birthday parties, extra events, skill classes and the best thing about them is you pay by session. Love that you don't have to pay by the year! They even offer a makeup day at the end of each session. And the best thing are the coaches! Katherine is awesome! They're okay. I haven't had experience with another gymnastics center so hard to compare. It's close to my home so convenient from a distance perspective. The center is "BUSY". There's a lot going on so it can be overwhelming if you're not used to it. I dont like how they have classes no matter what, even on spring break. And for make up, they only do it once a month on a sunday. So not convenient for changing schedule. So if you need to cancel or reschedule a class, you can't. You have to miss it and attend the once in a month make up Sunday or you just dont get credit for that missed class at all. So that piece is a bummer. The teachers are decent. We've had 1 lazy one who just stood there but the rest seemed to care. Prices are okay. read more

My 5 year old daughter was enrolled in track out camp and a gymnastics class to follow. The staff put her into the wrong class at the wrong time so when it was over, they lost track of her. She was unsupervised until I got there at her regular pick up time. I was given a multitude of excuses of why this happened and all the check and balances they have in place, But NOT ONE OF THEM WORKED. The staff didn't even know if she was there or not. I would not recommended using them for any of their camps ,classes and DEFINITELY NOT THEIR AFTERCARE! read more

Love the parent and tot class (Mr Corey is awesome if you can get him as a teacher!). The preschool class is good, too, but it is a longer class and I pay more, and I feel like there is more sitting around and waiting and less actually doing. My son had his Birthday party at Gym Carolina and he and his friends had an absolute blast. After an hour on the gym floor doing obstacle course, trampoline, foam pit and parachute play, the very sweaty and exhausted crew moved up to the play room for pizza, cup cakes and drinks. My four-year-old son is largely ignored in his class. Have given it a fair chance (4+ months) but when kids rotate through activities, his teacher spends her time helping the girls achieve better positioning and can go 5 minutes or more without even giving him a glance. If he cannot do the activity after a few tries (usually with no help) he loses focus and either sits down, wanders off, or puts himself in some danger, such as by jumping into a foam-block pit nearby that bigger kids are falling into off the balance beam. I tried impressing upon him before class starts that he needs to stay focused, but 60 minutes is a long time for a four-year-old to stay on-task with so little ongoing direction during the class. It breaks my heart when he comes out of class and asks "Mommy, was I good?" At best, he's learning nothing and at worst he's going to get hurt. Will not be going back or recommending to others. If four is not the right age for gymnastics class, so be it, but then why do they have a group specifically for four-year-olds??? My older daughter has a pretty good teacher or else this would be a one-star review. read more

This may be a great gym for the serious, intense, dedicated gymnast, but this is not a good choice for a trackout camp. My daughter is 5 1/2 and we did our research for fun, educational camps for her first experience tracking out of kindergarten. I called Gymcarolina and asked all the relevant questions. The staff assured me that children of all ages and all skill levels take part in their camps and the staff puts safety first. Unfortunately, this information was not passed on to the teachers. My daughter was injured twice. She was kicked in the chin with a cartwheel the first day and suffered a back injury later in the week severe enough to leave bruises and require a heating pad. Not one individual at the gym alerted me of either of these injuries. I am not sure how they avoid the requirement of parents signing injury reports?!! Also, my daughter was very down one day because she said her teacher repeatedly told her that she did not know how to do a cartwheel correctly, and that she was old enough to know how to do a cartwheel using the correct form. Thanks for the self-esteem boost Gymcarolina! I would NOT recommend GymCarolina to anyone as a trackout camp unless their children were experienced gymnasts. I was not at all impressed with the staff and felt their only concern was banking their $215.00 for the week. We were so unhappy with it that we skipped the last day. Of course, no one from Gymcarolina called to asked why...big surprise. ;) read more
