Our recent trip to Gypsy Gold Horse Farm was the highlight of our trip to Ocala. The farm is beautifully laid out with large live oak trees everywhere. Our tour started with a introduction to the Gypsy Vanner Horses, their heritage and how they came to America. Then we got carted around the 40 acre property and visit several of the horses, donkeys, and mules that call this place home. The animals are absolutely beautiful and majestic. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly and more than willing to answer any questions you might have about the amazing animals. And if you are in the market for a truly one of a kind animal they are a working farm that can set you up with one or more if you are interested. Absolutely going back! I'd recommend to anyone. I had 3 toddlers under 3 with me and my mom is handicap and uses a walker. Erin really made us feel welcomed and comfortable with the entire experience. From a mom to a mom, she showed us around so we could roam the grounds at the kids pace. What an incredible place - made so memorable by the owner's story about how this came to be as well as the Gypsy Vanner origins. He was very engaging and gifted at storytelling - and the property is lovely with the live oaks. I didn't know what to expect and it did not disappoint. For those with mobility issues, the tour does not have wheelchairs available but allow you to drive the route we walk, but one of my family members with difficulty walking did fine, just took her time. It would help if there were 2 or three benches (and a few wheelchairs) placed along the route for the compromised to catch their breath or people with searing back pain or pregnant to take the edge off for a few moments, but we all loved it, loved meeting the horses. Very majestic! There were no kids on our tour but I am sure they'd love it. The talk had Q& A as well- and then a horse walked through lol! read more

An important baby Vanner horse was born recently at this awesome farm. GG The Big Bucks was born to GG Sweet Angel...he is also the great grandson of 00001Cushti Bok (the first Vanner horse in Ocala that was brought over from Great Briton) GG The Big Bucks and his horse mama, GG Sweet Angel, have been sold to a private buyer in Columbia. They will be trailed to Miami and after their quarantine is complete they will be flown to Columbia. This farm owned by Dennis and Erin Thompson is a 40 acre, pristine place, where you can see the Vanner horses, donkeys, mules and the 13 macaws that reside there. What an amazing farm. My friend and I came to Gypsy Gold because I saw it featured on the local news, and we are both animal lovers. These horses are absolutely Gorgeous. They also have Donkeys, and Birds. They are all so friendly. The staff were so friendly, and accommodating. The owner was so intriguing with his stories, and how his journey got started, if you pick that package you can hear all about it. The history of the breed is very interesting. You can bring apples, and carrots to feed the Horses and Donkeys. Once the donkeys that are loose on the grounds see you have carrots and apples they will follow you around. Sooo cute!! This is truly an experience, and a treat for anyone who comes. We connected with the visitors who came as well such great people. This is well worth the price. Spent yesterday morning at Gypsy Gold - great experience! Erin welcomed us and we visited with a few of the horses and some gorgeous macaws (rescues, a whole 'nother story), then Dennis told us the story of the Gypsy Vanners. He is an exceptional story teller and has led such an interesting life. The talk was history, humor, personal anecdotes - I have difficulty sitting still for long spells but was enthralled. He has lots of plans for his horses and farm, but sure would like to read a book about his life as well - if he has any spare time for writing that! Such an interesting history and science to this horse breed. Then the second part of the tour - the horses - what some magnificent creatures. . . We were able to visit with beautiful horses from new foals to retired guys. They are the Fabios of the horse world and look like something from a fairy tale. Words don't do them justice (go for a trip and see). Also a crew of donkeys, miniature donkeys and two very handsome (even though there were girls) mules. The farm itself is such a pretty place, lots of oaks and shade, green pastures, winding paths - a great respite from nearby Ocala and I-75. This is a great adventure, exceptional value for price, easy access, great for a day trip (we came from Lakeland), would recommend it to anyone looking for something fun to do. The Farm is very nice and the owners extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They host a tour of the Farm a few times a week. The tour consists of a presentation and talk about the unique breed of horse that is the purpose and focus of the Farm. If you have a love of horses, I would absolutely recommend this tour. The knowledge and passion of the owners for the animals is tremendous and evident in everything they say and do. To be honest, I know very little about horses and much of the presentation was over my head. Especially in regard to breeds and breeding of animals. The presentation/talk lasted over an hour and was followed by a walk around the Farm and the many horses and mules that live on the Farm. I enjoyed the tour much more than the presentation. Visitors are encouraged to bring appropriate food/treats for the animals, such as apples and carrots (which were the clear favorite) and it was fun interacting with these beautiful animals. The owners have some plans for the future expansion of the activities for the Farm that will certainly enhance the experience. Overall, I considered the fee for the tour to be expensive for the experience. read more

What a beautiful farm, filled with beautiful horses. Dennis and his wife make you feel very welcome and are happy to share their story of how these horses came to be her. We were told there would be a 45 minute discussion while we were seated under huge trees and then a walk around the farm. The discussion lasted over an hour and was more information than I needed. I admire their tenacity and dreams, but I am not a horse person, so it was way too detailed for me. We were unfortunate enough to be in a group where a family brought an unruly child. He was disruptive, was poking sticks at the birds, climbing the fences, and petting horses we were told not to touch. It was very annoying for all the other guests, but nothing was done about it. Be sure and take along some apples and carrots as the horses loved them. They are very gentle horses and loved being petted, which was sweet. I wish them the best for their dreams of making this farm bigger and better. read more

A fun and happy horse farm, nestled deep and the heart of OCALA, perfect to take the kids to. We made reservations and bought tickets for the morning tour, unfortunately had to cancel them due schedule conflict on our end. They were very accommodating and said to just to show up for the later afternoon tour, no call aheads or reservations needed. The late afternoon tour had a shorter briefing of the history, but just as long of a walk about. The horses were happy, very well loved, and so were the donkeys! We took our own treats and the foals were so cute! read more

A most wonderful experience. The 40 acres are beautiful and the Corrals filled with gypsy gold stallions, mares and foals. There are many burros and mules, as well as numerous huge colorful parrots. The owner/docent gives a detailed talk about the origination of the breed from the UK, and how he brought them to USA. A fascinating story! Then a detailed walk to see them all. I drove 4 hours from Miami to this wonderful place and it was completely worth it. The owner is very charismatic and gave us a lot of info about the breed, as well as historic anecdotes and plans for the upcoming future. The horses are absolutely beautiful and gentle. I'm a horse lover and I even went to Chantilly, France and various other places just to watch horses but in this farm you can touch them, nobody will rush you and that is wonderful. So I was in Florida visiting my grandparents and my mom and grandmother were super excited to come to the Gypsy Gold horse farm and take a tour. Both Mom and Grandma grew up on farms and love horses. My grandmother had stumbled upon this place somehow and had been wanting to go for a while, so what better excuse than us coming to visit. My mom was excited and had followed them on facebook before we went, especially since one of the horses was expecting, and was hoping to see a new foal. When we arrived, Erin, the person checking us in recognized my mom and was familiar with her just from interacting on facebook. That was my first sign that the people here care. When driving to this place, or looking at it on the map, don't worry if you feel like you're going to a residential place. You're still headed to the right farm and they have clear signs as you get close marking where to go. I feel like I could start by telling you lots about the Gypsy Vanner horses and why they are so interesting and how fascinating their back story is, but I won't. Just know it's quite interesting. Your tour will start with a talk by Dennis, the owner of the farm and the guy who "discovered" the breed of horse, in a barn of sorts. At first I was dreading through what is a 45 min or so talk, but it was truly fascinating. Dennis is a great story teller and his passion for sharing the knowledge of the horses and the "gypsies" who bred them is clear. Dennis will then lead you around the stables and give you a bit of information about some of the horses. He knows so much about each of the horses and their stories and it's clear he loves them deeply. You can reach across and pet them and you are welcome to bring appropriate snacks for the horses. They also have some mules, which have their own interesting stories behind them as well. The horses and mules are friendly and you won't just be staring at them from a distance. As you approach them, they will come right up to you. There were a few kids on my tour and they were delighted with the fact they could pet the animals and got to feed them. You'll also find some other animals - chickens, parrots - on the farm, but they are not much of the tour. Don't expect anything crazy like to go inside of the stables with the horses or get on them, as this tour is designed for information, learning, and appreciation of these animals. However, at the end of the tour they do bring one of their horses out and you can get up close to him and take pictures and such. They do have a small gift shop with items to purchase. The walk around the farm is fairly accessible, but know you'll be walking through a working farm, so be sure to dress appropriately - especially the shoes. In the main barn there is a bathroom (just one stall) you can use. Out of all the tours I've been on of various places around the country, this may have been one of the best. If for no other reason than the people giving the tour were truly willing to talk to you, share information, and hear suggestions on all sorts of things. They do not rush you and let you walk around after the "official" tour and revisit the animals. If you are a horse lover, want to learn more about horses, have an interest in good story telling, or just think this may be an interesting place, I definitely recommend you go here. read more

I usually start losing focus if I have to sit and listen to someone for that long, but he's a great storyteller. After his presentation he takes the group for a walk around the farm. The horses & the grounds are beautiful. We were lucky as there was a foal that was four days old. The horses are gentle & we were allowed to pet them. You are allowed to bring carrots, but you're asked not to hand feed them. You are also allowed to take as many photos as you like. The only negative is the presentation regarding the history of the horses is a bit too long. read more

Wow what an amazing experience! I have never been so intrigued by any speaker ever. The first hour was an awesome lecture by the owner and honestly I could listen to him talk all day. In fact I wanted to invite him home for dinner!! Anyway, I had my two younger children with me that enjoyed the talk and was given horse pictures to color which kept them entertained. My older daughter and husband were just as amazed as I with the lecture. After, we toured the farm visiting all of the horses with such a better understanding of them and their history.
