Goleta H&R Block Two years ago our long time tax preparer retired. Last year and again this year we just went with H&R Block in the Fairview Center, Goleta. Both years they were incredibly slow and did not return calls or respond in a timely manner. This year, 2024, for the 2023 tax returns I was a bit blown away. As we went through all the documents with the "Sign Here" tags on them I carefully read what each document entailed. Two of the documents had absolutely nothing to do with preparation of our tax returns. One document authorized H&R Block to spam our mobile phones with their advertising. The other authorized H&R Block to sell our contact information to other spammers so they too could spam our mobile phones and email. Additionally, the bottom line fee for H&R Block did not include a discount that was offered. We declined to sign the spam authorizations and asked that the discount be included in the bill. I got my credit card out and was ready to pay. The representative who was assisting us took the documents and said she would have to return them to the tax preparer, who was not going to be back in the office until the following Tuesday, to redo the documents. I told her that neither the IRS nor California Franchise Tax Board cared one whit about the spam notices or discount on their bill so I didn't understand why the preparer would have to "redo" the documents. But she insisted that it was necessary to return all the paperwork to the preparer. I asked to speak with the Enrolled Agent (EA) for the office. She informed us that the office did not have an EA assigned. We'd have to go to the Santa Barbara office to speak to an EA. It's "that" Tuesday as I write this post. My wife called the office to make sure the agent was in. She was informed that the agent would call us back sometime within the next two days. Never again. Next year we will find a local tax prep office in the Santa Barabra/Goleta area. It will not be H&R Block. read more

I scheduled an apt on Sunday April 17th, at 9am. I arrived early, the office looked like it's been closed since last year . What do you know, nobody ever showed up, and the store is still closed!!! I would avoid this business ! Unless you want to get pissed off for wasting your time like I did with their internet appointments ..... WORTHLESS !!! read more

Ask about the fee increases before you start!! My 16th year getting taxes done by HR Block. Third at the La Cumbre location. Will never use any location again. Was not informed of a massive increase in fees this year. It has gone up a little over the years, but never this insanely so I didn't even think to ask. Pretty rude not to be told, especially being a long time customer. Left two messages for the manager, 3 weeks now and no call back. Got a voicemail from the tax preparer basically saying "yeah sorry fees went up". I paid $450 last year. $790!! Picture of my receipt and list of forms attached. Tried to get the $40 piece of mind taken off BEFORE I paid the receptionist, here's exactly what she said today "I'm sorry I'm just a receptionist I don't know how to do that." My tax preparer was with another client, she offered to interrupt her, but I just wanted to end this miserable experience. What's $40 when you're already out $800? For taxes that took 1 hour. H&R Block - Tax Services Near Me - Santa Barbara, California

I usually do my taxes myself online. Simple 1040A. This year I wanted to be sure of my prepared taxes (via Self Employed QuickBooks Online), and in order to avoid high costs, I naively went with H&R Block. After reviewing my tax preparation with an accountant, I was advised it would make sense to file with H&R Block as they were a less expensive option. When I showed up at my appointment with Catherine Cox, I provided her with a QBO Tax Summary and a P&L, along with additional details of my Schedule C deductions as I am an independent contractor and work from home. I asked her how much it would be up front and she told me it would be "by the form", but couldn't tell me how much each form would be until we were all done at the end. As a former bookkeeper, I keep excellent records throughout the year and after performing a heavy audit (myself and with some advice) I had a very large loss and made minimal income, as this being my first year in business. Additionally, my state return was equal to $46.00 and my federal return was equal to $436.00.  I sat through 2 appointments with Catherine Cox (first consultation for 30 minutes, and second "filing" appointment for 1 hour), where she was on her cell phone for about 60% of the time. She also mentioned that she did not care about "clocking-in" like her other co-workers because she made most of her income on commission. This should have been a red flag. As Catherine enters my information line to line, she decides to go ahead and add about 10+ forms to my tax return which I later find out were unnecessary. At the end of all of her "adjusting" and playing around with my numbers (subtracting office expenses that were feasible, etc.), she quickly presented me with my final taxes due along with filing fees. Here is what I was presented with: * $52.00 in total owed for both State and Federal taxes * $726.00 for "filing fees" As you can see the discrepancy in what was presented and the numbers were given were way off. In addition, I have never ever heard of $726.00 for filing fees with a business who had a loss, especially with the little work she performed. I gave Catherine accurate and definite numbers, which she manipulated to increase my number of forms, which "coincidently" increase her commission. I was completely shocked and still am. I was so upset that I went back to my accountant, who was also shocked. Additionally, my accountant told me the maximum number of forms that should have been filed were THREE. A big difference from Ms. Cox's filing of EIGHT plus forms. I have found 100s of reviews with similar complaints, and a review on the exact "Tax Expert" I dealt with, Catherine Cox (see "not recommended" review below). This was in 2014, and I can only imagine the number of complaints since 3 years ago. I don't understand why this woman is still employed, but apparently, it is because of her high sales volume. Very unprofessional and don't know what they are doing. I called to make an appointment to complete a rapid refund loan and the man told me I didn't need one I could walk in and be taken care of that same day and have my money. I went in later that day and the first thing the lady asks me is if I want to make an appointment to fill the paperwork out. I said I had called earlier and was told I don't need one and then she tells me that she wasn't aware she is the afternoon shift and they didn't debrief (why are you telling me this I don't care). Then a man takes me back and fails his login page, can't find the documents I need to fill out, then tells me he just got called in 30 min ago (again why do I need to know this?) and he can't help me. Then they both try to contact a coworker on break who they don't have the phone number for...what Business doesn't have their employees contacts on hand? After waiting 30 min they then told me I can't get the rapid refund loan until January 5th.... educate your employees. read more
