I eat veg. I eat meat. And I eat cheese. So here's the low down. I wake up at 5 or 6 in the A.M. on either Saturday or Sunday and haul my butt to Big (HEB). It's never busy at that time, contrary to what other reviewers have said about it being busy all the time. That's only if you're a lazy college student who can't wake up before 12. I like too see the butt crack of dawn on my weekends off from working, which must be rare because it's usually empty in Big at that hour. The only downside to going that early is that the deli is not open yet and sometimes they're still stocking the produce section. If it's the weekday, it's safe to go even up until about 9 or 10, since most people are working. I always start my grocery adventure in the produce department. Not sure how everyone else does it, but that's how I roll. I skip the fresh baked bread section and their prepared food items section because, well, have you looked at the crap they put in their food??? You wouldn't think bread would have so many ingredients you can't pronounce. And the ones you can pronounce are like corn syrup. Ya, in bread. So, unless I need cuts of deli meat, I go straight to produce. The produce guys there are awesome. I mean, I am not exaggerating. Ziggy works Saturday mornings and if you don't see what you want, or it's not fresh enough to your liking, you can always ask him or another produce guy if they have more in the back. Sam works Sunday mornings and knows I like organic kale, so whenever I see him, he asks me if the kale looks good and if I want him to get more fresh produce. I usually buy organic if I can. I am not the only one who gets special treatment. They are friendly to all their customers and cater to their needs. They don't always have more in the back, but if you ask, they are always obliged to check for you. The produce guys get six stars from me. I then mosey on to the fish section. Their fish is always fresh and at that hour, they're setting the display up, but will always stop to help. They have a pretty decent wild-caught fish selection. I do wish that they sold whole fish, though, which I've never seen here. I think it's good to appreciate that certain foods had eyes and a face and were sacrificed for our survival. Anyway, I digress. Their wild-caught salmon is good, but I don't like that they only sell 7 or 8 ounce pre-cut fillets. I like buying bigger cuts because they seem to hold flavor much better. Then off to the meat section. Their organic selection is not good. You can pretty much only find organic ground beef (80/20) and some measly cuts of grass-fed beef. As for chicken, they have skinless, boneless chicken breasts, an occasional whole chicken, chicken tenders, and sometimes thighs. You'd probably have better luck at Cornucopia across the street, or the New Braunfels farmer's market on Saturday mornings. But, if you don't mind jus' plain ol' meat, they have a pretty good selection at reasonable prices. I then double back to the bulk aisle, which has lots of fun nuts and health options. The only thing is that they don't have much raw nuts. I couldn't find raw pistachios or peanuts here, which I thought would be a no-brainer. Their fresh ground peanut butter and almond butter is so good, though! It grinds the nuts right before your eyes! The next aisle is the bread aisle. It's pretty vast and smells fresh. An aisle or two down is the canned veg and beans aisle. They have a good choice of Central Market brand organics here. I usually get their chickpeas and whole black beans and some whole tomatoes. I try to ignore the baking aisle or I could get in trouble. If you're serious about bacon, their Central Market brand bacons, located next to the organic chicken, may be right up your ally. It's expensive, but is so freakin' good. I get it as a treat, on occasion. They have a good milk section with lots of choices of alternatives for milk, such as unsweetened soy or almond milk. Also, in the dairy/yogurt section, they have a lot of HEB brands that imitate premium brands, such as Oikos Greek or Chobani singles. They're pretty decent. I usually get either the HEB plain Greek or the Fage brand. If you're gluten-free, don't fear. They have a decent selection of gf items in the frozen food section with Udi's bread. Plus some gf snacks near their bulk aisle. Well, that was probably a lot more in depth than you would have preferred. But I'm kind of really serious about my food. I hope you find everything you need here, but if not, there's always Cornucopia, which is a mom and pop health foods grocer, or Central Market in South Austin, if you're that desperate for specialty foods. Also, don't forget to hit up New Braunfels' farmer's market Saturday mornings and go early for the best choices! read more

As far as grocery stores in San Marcos go...this one is as good as it gets. It's no Sprouts, Mr. Natural, or Whole Paycheck (Whole Foods) but it's all we San Martians have. I'd love to be able to grow all my food and buy the rest from the local Farmer's Market, but that would be nearly impossible. This place has great meats, breads, and produce. Mary is right...this place is ALWAYS slammed. Makes grocery shopping almost miserable. Go before or after the peak hours. Five stars because I have never been stopped by the HEB gestapo. read more

Waited there for like 15 minutes after the time slot they gave me and someone else who got there after me got their stuff first. I drive all the way home and realize. I am updating my review below- I have noticed since posting that there has been quite a positive shift at HEB San Marcos locations. In regards to HEB cashiers, I have encountered friendly and professional staff as of late. Thank you to those responsible for making the shift and thank you to cashiers who prove positive interactions matter. Old Posting: What is the problem with some of these HEB cashiers in San Marcos? Specifically, I have found several male cashiers to be especially rude on more than a few occasions. I am a mother of two toddlers wondering if professional ethics is included in standard of conduct for all employees. I'm tired of the lethargy combined with cold shoulder dismissal of these sort of employees. Specifically, it is most noticeable that with these rude employees, there is a notable friendly demeanor toward (#1)-male customers who are (#2)-without children preceding me; however, when I began my check out transaction there is no greeting (despite my greeting them), and complete avoidance of eye contact or verbal exchange. So which is? Because I'm a female? Or because I'm a mother of two young well behaved children? I'This is hardly a false dichotomy. Too many times I have witnessed this. Until lately, I have enjoyed HEB. Is HEB interested in transforming the shoppers experience for something worth their time and money? Or does it value the slack, disrespectful, less-than-mature mindsets representing their store brand? Please fire these folks. And please hire an individual specifically to step in when these individuals deserve to be led out. If HEB wants to entice families with children through HEB Buddy Bucks, it's imperative that staff exemplify appropriate customer interaction. read more

My very first visit to an HEB was just about an hour ago. Unfortunately, this is the very worst time to go to any grocery store so I had to mentally prepare myself for the crowd of shoppers. While the store is smaller than your typical Tom Thumb (which I am used to shopping at), they still had a great variety of products. I was just stocking up on essentials for a night in a hotel room (i just can't eat room service or pizza delivery anymore) but i found everything I needed! Including my Starbucks Via Iced Coffee, thank goodness otherwise i might have had a melt down in the coffee aisle. Everyone was super friendly from the employees to the customers even (lots nicer than the customers at my local whole foods, yikes!). Hoping there will be an HEB in Dallas sometime soon, but I'm still waiting on Trader Joe's so we'll see. read more

I watched a crazy customer yell at an associate while management stood back and watched. The young lady was trying to help, but he basically snapped. The two managers sat back and watched. They didn't step in to help at all! As a manager, I would NEVER let a customer treat a member of my team in a disrespectful way. Had an extremely bizarre and disturbing interaction with the checkout clerk and manager tonight. She was knocking food off the conveyor belt after it had been scanned, continued scanning when the conveyor belt was so backed up, food had nowhere to go but onto the floor. Salsa was knocked off shattering on the floor, she didn't even flinch, she kept scanning, never breaking stride. When asked to please stop scanning she looked up said if anything is damaged you can bring it back tomorrow and deal with it then. I am so confused all I can do at this point is stare in bewilderment at the man frantically trying to clean up the salsa off the floor and probably her shoes. When I asked to speak to the manager, they called over a girl who was a tad bit less abrasive towards my 60-year-old mother and I, but she too, continued scanning, stating they were to busy to worry about damaging items. (Just for reference, damaged products equals higher prices.) In my opinion, it would be well thought out for upper management to take some initiative and try to make this HEB at least a tolerable place to buy groceries. Very rude and unhelpful employees. I have shopped at this H-E-B many times before and recently I have been contemplating just driving to Trader Joes as their customer service is professional and they are helpful to their clients. Cashiers have terrible attitudes, baggers bruise your produce, store manager Jim is unkind. H-E-B is starting to behave as if they are a monopoly, unaccountable for the way they treat people. I have loved HEB since moving to Austin decades ago. However, this San Marcos location continues to frustrate for over a decade. Any product, especially gluten free, that flies off the shelf they do not reorder. Supply and demand are foreign concepts even with a warehouse in San Marcos. Walmart surprisingly has stepped up to the challenge. They have competition in gluten free food. The workers at this HEB are rude if they notice you at all,even when checking out. HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! Took a bachelor/humorous themed cake idea to the bakery... and they just looked at me in disgust and acted as though I was so terrible to even ask for such a thing. She told me they are family owned and would not participate in making cakes like that. When I asked her if she did any bachelorette/bachelor party themed cakes she said in absolute disgust "ugh no we are FAMILY owned business" well ma'am I'm a FAMILY gal and I dont appreciate being judged for wanting a humorous cake for my event. I was talked down to and degraded and honestly I felt embarrassed. She could have politely declined!!!! But NO she made me look like a fool and completely questioned my character while making me feel ashamed. She then told me "anything my grandma couldn't see" they couldn't make..... ITS A CAKE!!!!!! My grandma would not care and would personally have a sense of humor. AND I TELL YOU ONE THING even if she didn't think it was funny she would not SHAME me for it or question my character. I was not asking for anything that was a racial slur, contradicting, or offensive!!!!! (Which she said it was offensive) once again, politely declining would have been just fine but I didnt get that much respect and for that I will be placing my order elsewhere. For being in a small town like San Marcos, this HEB location is pretty remarkable for its selection. Their produce section is the thing that impresses me most, as they have a wide array of "ethnic" ingredients that I would not necessarily expect to find at a small town grocer, as well as a decently sized organic section (though they have never carried organic tomatoes that I have seen, which is sad because the heat killed my tomato plants this past summer). They also have an entire aisle dedicated to "health food" with an expansive bulk section as well as a few prepackaged items and a huge selection of dietary supplements. Their selection of pretty much everything is great because this place is huge, on par with the size of grocery stores I'm used to seeing in Houston. They also tend to have great deals and lower prices on a lot of items than some of their competitors, unless you're willing to buy your groceries at Walmart, which has always struck me as a pretty repugnant idea, for some reason. After all that praise, you might be wondering, "Whither the other stars, Mary? Why only three?" Well, I'll tell you. I only gave this place three stars because shopping here at any normal shopping time (between 4pm and 8pm) is like running a gauntlet of slow walking people with screaming children all packed into the aisles. This is one of the most crowded grocery stores I've ever been to. Almost everyone in San Marcos shops here due to all the good points I listed above. Unless you come early in the morning or late at night, you're going to experience the unholy press of the masses, and it drives me insane. I try to shop during off hours whenever possible because if I don't I almost always leave here on the verge of a panic attack. I don't do well with large crowds in an enclosed space. Also, they have a squad of "loss prevention" people in yellow shirts working the doors, and if I've just run in for a few items and I don't have a shopping cart full of things they ALWAYS stop me to check my bags. It's really ANNOYING. I've been shopping there every week for over two years now and I KNOW those people recognize me. I've thought about writing a letter of complaint about the blatant age-profiling they've got going on, because the vast majority of people I've seen them stop are my age or younger, but I doubt it would change anything. This brand is really letting itself go. Canned goods are often dented, I have found hair in the fresh cut fruit (watermelon, specifically), brand new food was spoiled when it was opened, and the birthday cake that my husband ordered was the wrong flavor. I love HEB, but this one sucks. If you want regular (not frozen and pre-cooked) sausage, you won't find it here. If you want a frozen breakfast food that isn't waffles, you won't find it here. If you want something you have purchased here before, it probably won't be in the same place as last time (or it's out of stock). The chicken is regularly still frozen when it's placed on the shelves. Sometimes, there's a woman who aggressively pushes gross pizza samples. She will holler down every aisle, like she's yelling at a misbehaving child, and seems to get angry if you say no, or encounter her more than once. Instead of adding a bigger selection of normal food, they built a huge addition to the building and added a dumb restaurant and a huge unnecessary gourmet cheese section. Seriously? The parking lot is always full, and has poor traffic flow. The cashiers are generally friendly, but I'm rarely asked if I want help carrying my bags to my car (I say no anyway, most of the time, but at every other store it's at least offered). San Marcos has 2 HEB stores. The employees at the main store are very courteous, But, the ones at the smaller store are not taught or trained to say thank you to the customers, One day last week, the milk cartoon wasn't put in a bag. So, I just asked the bagger to please put it in one. This guy looked at me in a rude way and got a bag and slamed the cartoon into the bag., This really upset me and ruin my day. I don't know why they have employees with this kind of attitudes. If, they don't want to work in this kind of jobs they should find some where else to work read more

The 'Big' HEB has recently gotten bigger. They have an incredible, well-priced selection with friendly staff. The only bad thing is that the size is approaching overwhelming. I usually spend at least 20 minutes and 20 dollars more than I plan, but that's more of a problem with my self-control. Over the last decade I have noticed a decline in both San Marcos HEBs. It's to be expected that the little HEB would be sub par. It's sort of their outlet store for used product. However, the big HEB should and could do better. I won't even mention the lack of parking, (well I guess I just did). The produce is looking worse and worse. If you don't eat an avocado on the way home it will be brown by the time you arrive. The rotisserie chicken is undercooked. The rest of the produce is questionable, especially the pre-packaged salad and fruit. They cater to the college crowd so have stopped carrying some of my favorites. They have some empty shelves most of the time. But my biggest aggravation are the baggers. Who puts a large coffee creamer in with eggs or bread?! The baggers are the worse. They fail to carry great Texas brands at this store like Texas Squeeze juices made in Austin. Can't wait until they build another HEB on Wonder World. read more

This is for ONE PERSON in paticular working in the PHARMACY. I LOVE this HEB. Go there several times a week with my family and get all my perscriptions through this pharmacy. I've almost always had great experiences. Today however, I called to refill a perscription but was out running errands and didn't have the number on me. Monica answered the phone and asked me questions to get the right person and perscription in order to fill the order. It was windy today and when she asked my birthday and name of my perscription, I couldn't make out what she had said. I replied, "I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" to both questions when asked, and when she replied and repeated the questions it was in THE RUDEST way possible and super slow like I was stupid. i was never rude in our conversation so I just figured I'd brush it off, no big deal, she's probably just having a bad day. Then as we were finishing on the phone, she told me when it would be ready and I said, "Okay, thank you so much". Her reply? An aggravated, "Uh huh" and then *Click*. She was the rudest person I have ever spoken to over the phone. If you get that aggravated with someone over asking you to repeat two questions, maybe you shouldn't be working in a setting where you have to deal with people who have questions all day. (All you have to say is "birthday?' or "Name of Perscription?" It's not like I asked you to repeat the terms of use for the medication or something that would take more than a minute of your time). I was beyond appalled when she hung up that way. Monica is very rude and not professional in the least bit. I can understand if I was rude on the phone to begin with but that wasn't the case and I saved my rude comment for her until AFTER she hung up on me. Next time I get Monica on the phone, I will either be asking for someone else to assist me or asking for a manager to tell all of this to. read more

I shop this HEB every weekend and spend on average $100 bucks. My suggestion is that their staff be trained in coupon sensitivity. I use maybe 2 coupons per visit, usually for cat food and I am careful to ensure that the coupon is not expired and I purchase the correct quantity and follow any other rules that apply. This morning, oops, I only purchased 10 cans for this 12 can minimum coupon. Honest mistake. Since the coupon was "rejected", she made the bagger dig to the bottom of one of my bags to count them. Twice I told her "forget it! It's not worth it! We're holding up the line!" I moonlighted at HEB years ago and I would give the customer the benefit of the doubt and manually enter the coupon, especially if I knew it was an honest mistake and that this customer just spent $100 + on groceries! A .75 cent coupon is not going to bankrupt the grocery chain. You learn who is trying to get away with something, but you know when it was a simple oversight. GIVE THE CUSTOMER CREDIT FOR THE DAMNED COUPON. read more

Disappointed shopping here after living in Austin for 17 years. There is a definite difference in caliber of stores compared to the ones in Austin which carry much more organic and healthy choices, are cleaner and fresher. The response at the San Marcos HEB is pretty much "Huh? We don't have that." And they also took down their suggestion box...guess it was getting too full of requests! Frankly, I live here now but still drive to Austin for my Central Market and Whole Foods fix....SM HEB has a looooong way to go to become the quality store I am used to.....and I've always raved about how great HEB is to my out of state friends, but am afraid this one doesn't cut it..... read more

great place to shop, the prices are affordable, store is clean, I use the pharmacy and the service is great! I went in recently and had some questions about my medications the pharmacist on staff, Javier was extremely patient and knowledgeable. The clerk, a Jewels was so helpful and rang up some items I had. Every time I shop the staff is so kind and nice to me. A woman named Monica is always so cheerful when I'm picking up prescriptions. The layout of this HEB is great. Hard to find a parking spot at times, but other than that great for the weekly grocery run. I finally tried out the car wash the other day and I have to say I was disappointed. For a seven dollar car wash I would expect more than just a spay of water. This HEB is great. When I moved here from Florida I didn't know what I was going to do without a Publix for several hundred miles. I've never seen a grocery store that has as many craft beers as HEB, it has more than the twin liquors down the street.
