The outstanding crew from Holtz arrived early every day over the two weeks needed of the exterior caulking and painting project that our 20 year-old Hardy plank siding needed. Prior to the start of the caulking and painting, Holtz recommended a power washing team who did an outstanding cleaning all the mildew, dirt and other stuff off the siding, eaves and Soffit of our two-story house (with one almost 40 side wall). They did an outstanding job and exceeded our expectations in all the areas needed detailed prep work that we were unaware of and worked diligently to fix the detail items. The team was very professional, friendly and were happy to answer any questions of issues we had before the job began and throughout the job. The skills needed for this job were many and the Holze team covered every aspect from the broad to the tiny detail required. We wholeheartedly recommend Holtz Painting. First, the positive: everyone I dealt with at HJ Holtz was very polite. Now, everything else. I called to schedule an appointment to get an estimate on some outside painting. I made an appointment, and when I took the afternoon off to meet the appraiser, he was a no-show. When I called back, I was informed by the very nice office manager that my appointment had been lost because of the new scheduling software that had just been installed. OK, technical problems, I understand... not so thrilled to be out for the afternoon on a wild-goose chase, but fine. I rescheduled, and the co-owner was going to come himself and take a look. He showed up and was very personable; the job is pretty simple, so he was only there for about 10 minutes. Two days later I received a written estimate that was so ludicrous price-wise, I suspect HJ Holtz wanted to gold-plate my house. It was literally thousands of dollars more than any other bid I received. I wanted to do business with someone local to me, but unless you need gold plating and can't figure out what else to spend your vast piles of money on, look somewhere else. read more

I contacted this company to get an estimate on kitchen cabinet painting. My estimate came back as $5700 for painting!!!! Not only on my estimate did they claim that my cabinets were in a condition requiring "surface repairs" (they are impeccable just want color change) they came in with a ridiculously high price. I got a second estimate which was $2800 for exactly the same level of work. Unbelievable. I will say that the estimator was very nice and professional according to my husband. However, if you look towards this company I strongly urge you to make sure you get a couple other estimates to compare. When I politely questioned the proposal via email the estimator never even responded to me. I was very excited about this company and excited to work with them because I heard such great things, however there are many other paint companies that also carry great reputations. read more

We received a quote in July of 2019 for exterior painting at our home but missed the 2019 "painting season". Once we got an approximate start date in early April of 2020, H J Holtz & Son was terrific to work with. They coordinated power-washing with EnviroWash (who also did a great job) and the crew descended on our house for just less than 3 weeks. From start to finish, the crew (Casey [later replaced by Jose' when Casey moved to another job], Zach and with Gary at the lead) kept us informed of the process, went above and beyond in many ways (we have a 95 year old house) such as assisting with very old windows, progressed incredibly efficiently and gave us a terrific finished product! Communication was excellent all through the process and we are delighted with the end result! The final invoice was exactly in line with the July 2019 proposal. We had used Holtz in the past for exterior painting and were generally pleased. We contacted them for interior patching of plaster cracks and painting. I was very disappointed in the level of finish for the interior work. This was not a competitive bid and I made it clear that we were unhappy with the level of patching that was done prior to our purchase of the house. We did NOT change the paint colors and the sole reason for painting was for patching, then repainting. I apparently misunderstood the estimate which was not the evaluation of the estimator on what needed to be done in order for the job to be done satisfactorily for me, but instead what would be done by Holtz in order to make it look "okay" for them and then they could quickly get out. I was prepared for them to take their time, but it only took them 5 days for three bedrooms, vestibule, hall and an oversized living room. The level of work shows it. When I asked about areas that were questionable, and not acceptable to me, I was told that it was beyond their capabilities and that I should employ a plaster/drywall finisher - this was after they had painted. I feel that the estimator should have explained that they had different levels of "finishing" the job. DO NOT HIRE THEM FOR INTERIOR WORK WITHOUT A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THEIR WORK. Additionally, there were holes in the trim that were not filled before painting. I post this because I contacted Holtz after the job was finished to explain my disappointment and have not gotten a call back. I will not use them in the future. read more

Holtz is without exception the best painting company that you will ever find on the U.S. East Coast. They practically restored the interior of my Queen Anne Victorian, which has very elaborate trim and plaster walls. In addition, they did everything that was required to properly paint new wood (such as interior doors that we had made to duplicate the originals that were in the house) so that you didn't see the grain; they sanded between coats. They have made several visits to our house during the course of the restoration, and they will make at least one more--it is a job that has had to be done in stages. The painter they send to head up the job each time is excellent; he know everything about painting, including all the subtleties, and he is committed to doing things right. read more
