I have always wanted to try this meat market but we generally only come over this way during dinner time so it's always closed. I finally made it over around lunch time and apologized in advance because I wanted to "taste test" a variety of different items. The gentleman who was helping me was super patient and just overall thrilled to have me wanting to try so many things so this was my spread & reactions: 1. Turkey jerky - very interesting compared to others I've had, a bit too salty for my liking but my husband said it was in his top 2 and is a turkey jerky fiend so I'd take his word over mine 2. Normal jerky - a little thinner than I prefer but really great flavor, easy to chew without being too soft nor hard like leather. It's in MY top two for sure! 3. Beef stick & cheese beef stick - these were both really good! The butcher helping me recommended trying the cheese because it's his personal favorite but I actually thought the normal beef was actually better! 4. Smoked salmon - this was actually my favorite of all the different snacks we tried, it was smoked really well that brought out the natural flavors of the fish. It wasn't dry or crumbled, but kept its own and easily was devoured without any morsel left behind! Although I didn't try anything from the freezers, they had such a huge variety we just have to come back again soon! Hackenmueller's meats and fish are very good. Price is high, but the quality is generally worth it. I have enjoyed shopping there for many years. Sadly, on recent visits the service has been bad, to the point of being almost rude. I have enjoyed supporting a nice old fashioned butcher shop, and I hope they pull themselves together. But there are a lot of other good quality butchers out there who treat their customers better. read more

Quite honestly, I don't understand how anyone could give Hackenmueller's anything lower than a five-star review, unless perhaps, they were vegetarians. My ONLY complaint ever has been that no matter how crowded they are, I never have enough time to decide what I want. This is because they have more staff than a crowded clown car behind the counter, waiting to help you. I have been shopping at Hackenmueller's for over 40 years. It seemed like a throw-back old-time butcher shop in 1979, and I mean that in the best possible way. You just don't see this type of place anymore. So what is so good about them? Their service is consistently excellent. The entire staff, who are mostly family, are experts in all things meat. The prices are more than fair, and lower than upscale grocery stores for comparable items, and higher quality than almost any other store. They say you can't have low prices, high quality, and great service, but they do! Their hams are the best and they will happily cut a half a ham into two quarters (we use one and freeze one). Pro tips: You can buy ham slices by the pound and they will be blow your mind. Also, people in the know buy their beef sticks and finish them before getting back to the car. Their steaks and pork chops are always top-notch and probably the items i buy most often. All items are carefully wrapped and labeled. There are freezer cases with lots of stuff from seafood to frozen hamburgers to onion rings. I also know that they are very civic minded and have donated food for local fundraisers. Honestly, there is nothing to not like. If they ever closed, there would be a permanent sadness for me and for their many other loyal customers. Long live Hackenmueller's. read more

This place is fantastic! For years, I've had steaks from this place that my buddy bought. But I finally went there myself, and got 2 New York strips, a bunch of their wonderful beef sticks and jerky, and finally a chicken wrapped in bacon cheese and mushrooms. Everything was awesome. They have a wide range of selection and I've never been disappointed with anything I've gotten. I'm obsessed with their homemade salmon spread. If they allowed six or seven stars I'd give them to Hack's. I have been shopping for fresh meat at this place for 25+ years and have never had anything close to even a mildly unpleasant experience. It does help if you know what you want and don't hem an haw and ask 10,000 questions, but I would guess they would do their best to be patient if you did. They will also do their best to accommodate special requests, within reason, and are always, always pleasant, or as pleasant as time allows, given the fact that the customers are usually about three or four deep at the counter, and they do need to get other orders. It's a business after all. The only place to buy bacon, ground beef, chuck roasts. Steaks. Yes, they are not cheap. But then who is? Their ground beef is ground daily, sometimes multiple times a day, and it is likely it is the freshest anywhere. Minutes old. The best butcher shop on this side of the metro and it's not even close. You have to take a number and I experienced some old-timey joy pulling a number and waiting for my turn. Bought 4 T-bones, they were quite large, and at nearly $60 on the top end of price, but butcher shop steaks are totally worth it! Picked up a bag of jalapeño jerky and teriyaki jerky. Both were scarfed down by my family in a matter of minutes. The jalapeño was slightly preferred to the teriyaki. The beef sticks were also super popular and eaten in a hot minute. Overall a terrific meat market and butcher shop. A+: house made ham and bacon are simply the best available I have found in the Twin Cities. Although they are now slicing the bacon VERY thick which works for some, but my personal preference is a little thinner for this style of bacon. Also their homemade hotdogs and smoked franks are similarly tops. You wont want to buy again from a grocery store. A: Beef, pork and chicken are generally all better than any grocery store and on par with other good butcher shops. No aged beef though :(. But they do have excellent homemade corned beef in the spring. B: I am not a fan of their breakfast sausage though, links or bulk. Made fresh in house yes, but the only seasoning I can taste is black pepper and the meat is paddled to a consistency that makes it a but gummy. Even though their bacon is top notch, I will also get pork belly from here when I make my own bacon. Finally, while they will do a custom order and cut of any meat they regularly stock, that base stock does not seem to change (e.g. no lamb in the spring). read more

Take a number right away when you walk in to get yourself in line! This is where I come for summer meats to grill. During the winter months I have also purchased their quality variety meat packs. They had 50lbs. or 100lbs. options with roast, chicken, sirloin, pork chops and ground beef. Add some of their delicious homemade sausages and smoked jerky. I would say the maple is the best. Along the outside walls of the store, there are a lot of frozen options like ground meats, shrimp, sausages, cheese curds, bacon, fish, egg rolls, and pot pies. The staff are helpful, so just let them know what you are looking for and they will find it. Last time I was here, I was looking for pork shoulder and did not see it. The staff member let me know they actually keep a lot of the pork in the back, not in the front case. Get any additional sides, spices as well. read more

I drove an hour and a half to get some sausage because where I live, there isn't much of a variety and I'm giving a dinner party and wanted something special. When I got there after drinking coffee all the way there today for gracious enough to let me use the restroom. Now onto the sausage! Well, I haven't tasted it yet their selection was amazing and I even found a potato sausage that I didn't think even existed. What can I add to the many enthusiatic accolades bestowed upon this carnivores paradise by numerous fellow Yelpers? Perhaps I can only hope to echo others in heaping praise on this old school meat market. I first discovered this establishment in the early 1980's when my wife and I purchased a home in the Victory neighborhood of Minneapolis. I have yet to find anyplace offering a better bone-in ham. Whether piping hot out of the oven or fresh off the grill, it is superbly flavorful, moist and tender. Get a larger cut then you might think you need. You'll be grateful when you make sandwiches, omelets, scalloped potatoes or whatever your imagination fancies with however much is leftover from your feast. The stuffed pork chops are savory and satisfying. Porketta roasts are juicy delights. Homemade sausages and various jerkies beckon temptingly from behind glass. It's always a challenge to not leave with many more pounds of butcher paper wrapped sumptuousness than one may have intended. If you arrive on the weekend or before a major holiday expect a large crowd and much general commotion. YASSSS. So far, a local butcher shop has been the #1 perk of moving to the burbs. I walked in and was immediately surround by some amazing cuts of meat and a warm welcome from the staff behind the counter. The gal who helped me was willing to answer any questions I had about the flavors, cuts, best options and when asked provided some helpful recommendations. (From now on, all wedge salads shall be made with bacon ends and not regular bacon in our household! Holy yum). The selection was vast and everything appeared super fresh. I ordered a ribeye, garlic butter marinated pork chop and bacon ends for my other half's birthday dinner and every single bite was delicious. We cannot wait to go back. What a gem! read more

Hackenmuellers is an amazing little meat shop definitely worth the trip or your 10 minutes to stop when you're in Robbinsdale. Being pretty much right across from Pig Ate My Pizza, now you have a double reason to stop! The store is primarily a butcher shop but the thing that really draws us in most regularly are the meat snacks. They have a wide array of jerky that we really love. Not only is there beef jerky but there's also turkey jerky and pork jerky. Get some pork jerky. It's an unusual offering and delicious. Just leave some for us! They also do a wide variety of meat sticks that are fun to check out (last time I was there, the guys in front of me ordered two meat sticks to get them from the store to their car, lol). And they have the most fabulous thick cut bacon. If you patronize area stores like Von Hansons, it is definitely worth the trip to check out Hackenmuellers.
