I just purchased a ribeye steak from this establishment. I got it home and had to trim the large pieces of fat and gristle and 30% of my steak was not edible!!!! I feel riped off paying 25.99 a pound for 70 % edible and 30% waste. They should be ashamed of themselves! read more

My husband is a beef jerkey connoisseur, and he LOVES the jerkey here. We come by routinely to pick up some jerkey and also dabble in other items like the beef sticks or the brats. We find the quality to be excellent at Von Hansons and the staff to be both friendly and knowledgeable. it's a great place to go if you have a specific question or a special request. In many ways it reminds me of the old-school butcher shop, though I know they have many locations! A few complaints about this specific locale -- there's never any parking in that crazy tiny parking lot. We wish they were open for longer hours, especially on the weekends. And we wish they would run more coupons -- occasionally we get some in the Star Tribune or other local coupon book type pamphlets that come to the house. But we do appreciate teh quality, expertise and service. Lovely! read more

It really seems like your focus on product variety is lacking. I was hoping to buy a leaner beef roast from you and all you offer is chuck roast. No arm roast, top or bottom round roast. But these cuts were common with the old fashioned meat markets. The current coupons are for prepared stroganoff hot dish, apple crisp and dog bones. The employee was friendly but I had to go elsewhere for that old fashioned beef variety. read more

Absolutely nothing special about this place. Prices are higher than at kowalskis or lunds and they don't even have any original offerings that you can't find elsewhere. They say in their history and their "philosophy" that they wanted to bring a local butcher service with only fresh meats but you walk in there and half of what you see is frozen, the other half is Boars Head and it's all overpriced. I've been to locations all over the twin cities - avoid this place like the plague. read more

When I brought in my venison from last season to have ground, I told them very explicitly upwards of 12 times that I didn't want it combined with any beef or pork. Like full stops and triple-checks explicit. Guess what's in it. Tons of hamburger and tons of fat. It doesn't even look like ground venison. I find out later that you don't even get your own meat back; they just weigh it, combine it all, and you get a certain amount of packages back. Well anyway, it's therefore ruined for my wife, so I'm pretty much giving it away. Never again, Von Hanson's. There are lots of places that will grind and package your meat for a boutique price. All I can say about this place is quality, quality, quality - anything you buy. Not much fish, but as feather and fur goes, they've got it all - fresh, great quality, and good prices. Lots of wonderful side dishes, drinks, and other offerings as well. Pretty much a one-stop shop for food for a social event. Friendly, knowledgeable help. They clearly don't hire from college IT departments, because these folks actually make eye contact and smile, and come around from behind the display counter to hand you your purchases, instead of throwing them over the top. Obviously, somebody here knows something about gracious service. You need to be warned - their dill-ranch pretzels have been classified as highly addictive. My brother who lives in Toronto used to live in Columbia Heights and I used to travel all the way to Blaine, Endor really, to pick up the gigantic chicken breasts at VH's. We've now moved to South Minneapolis and the Ford Parkway now is closest to us. I'll admit, the service doesn't feel as authentic but to be fair, a lot of things are weirder in Saint Paul. That said, the chain boasts similar quality meats no matter where you go and the Ford Parkway location is no different. The chicken breasts are the clutch things to get due to their size. Sure, they're American size and you have to wonder how they got that big, but when I'm attacking a double size piece of meat, I don't have time to breathe, let along think about the meat. Their massive meat package things for $99 or $199 or 4 easy payments of $149.99 seem ok but remember, you don't get to see the cuts. Often there is a side of fat to help with a 4 or 8 oz. cut. I was less than impressed. Try their pretzels and meat sticks on the counter, they're quite good. For the cost, they're tasty and I get them when I see their email or newspaper coupons. Speaking of the coupons, the Buy-One-Get-One deals are the best and I'd check online if your newspaper magically doesn't have one or they don't have a newspaper deal that week. The cost is a deviation high, but the quality is also slightly higher. Getting a coupon with near to zero work definitely makes it worth it. Stopping by Von Hanson's to pick up meat and then stopping by Lund's makes for a perfect grilling evening. Try it out sometime. read more

I'm in town to visit my family and decided a delish pork loin roast would be fab for dinner. We checked out Von Hansons - my sister stops in for sandwiches at lunchtime and thought we'd find a quality deal here. Oh My! Cut and tied to perfection, I slathered on a mustard/honey glaze, scooted into the oven and voila! Juicy, flavorful, tender, full-flavored pork. We also grabbed a loaf of their Parmesan bread. Yeasty, fluffy and a nice complement with the roasted veggies and cabbage slaw we also served. This pork loin put a smile on all our faces and the meal is a memory none of us will quickly forget. Great place to get good meat.

I needed some deli meat, not really big on sales here on these items, still $9 something a pound on boars head. I swear even these good "brands" are feeling generic. But I'm still thinking way back to the family butcher shop. Why I let this slide, is that they carry skirt or hangar steak. I had a discussion with Robert on this topic, and he doesn't get why it's not as well known either. It's not as cheap as it used to be, but I believe flank is more expensive. Which is usually used for stir fry and fajitas, and you'll be happy with the skirt, even just for a solo serving. It's the diaphragm if you're interested. The other draw is the samples of dill ranch oyster crackers, which I kept grabbing like I'm getting away with something. They are highly addictive and I'd recommend them for any party. I noticed some wild rice amongst other goodies, including a brand of ice cream I haven't seen before. read more

Not only is the food excellent quality every time I buy there, the guys are truly interested in knowing what you want and offer genuinely helpful tips and options to make certain you are happy. About the Boar's Head deli offerings: Rhonda G has clearly not been to the deli for BH in quite some time. I have been to many of the upper-end grocery deli's to find BH and the prices are ALL higher than Von Hansen's. Particularly the cheese, which is why I now plan a regular weekly trip to this shop for my deli needs. I almost fell over when I got the Oven Gold turkey at $10 #, Buy One Get One FREE! last week. These guys rock consistently. BTW: try a snack of the free samples of their own Ranch Dill pretzels or Dill oyster crackers at your own risk. I rarely indulge in those snacks but ended up buying one out of embarrassment of eating so much of the sample container... read more

Wonderful butcher shop. I particularly like the wide variety of beef sticks. I went in yesterday to get lamb for kebabs. The head butcher, Casey, was extremely helpful with determining what would be a good cut for that at a great price. I ended up buying a whole shoulder. I have also ordered whole pigs from them in the past for pig roasts. They even took the time to brainstorm with me about how I was going to cook it. If you give them enough lead time they can find most anything for you. Great meat and service. read more

Visits to Von Hanson's always make us feel like kids in a candy store. So much good stuff and we felt guilty leaving without enough stuff to fill our freezer. But over time we found the quality of the cuts of meat to be poor, below the quality of your typical grocery store butcher. We thought we were imagining things for a while so we continued making the trip across the river to pick out some meat goodness. But we could not ignore the bone chips in ground beef, grissly steaks, or uneven cuts. We felt like we were paying a premium for meat that was not worth the premium at Von Hanson's. read more

Every time we go there we get attitude from 2 old crotchety guys behind the counter. They don't make you feel very welcome. The meat is awesome but the customer service sucks the big one. Stopped in to buy something on special. When I was finished I noticed that I was overcharged, and wasn't given the sale price. I asked about the sale, which he knew nothing about (seriously?), then he re-weighed the purchase. The weight was 0.32 pounds, and the sale was 2 dollars off. He told me the different was 16 cents and laughed at me. Several problems here. Don't laugh at me, no matter what. In this case, I should have laughed at your math. Take the 50 cents you couldn't calculate and buy a math lesson. He even used a calculator. Unreal. Decent meat at this place, but double check the bill. read more

I recently had a very unpleasant experience at the Von Hanson's in Highland Park, St. Paul. It was Thursday, August 6th, and I had the afternoon off from work. I had a long list of meat items to pick up, e.g. marrow bones for stock, beef and pork roasts, pork belly, pork ribs, etc. and was really looking forward to working with the staff to pick out some good things for future meals. It was ruined from the minute I walked in the door. The dowdy clerk, clearly bored to death with his job and irritated at being disturbed, didn't even bother to say hi. I stood at the case for several minutes before he glumly walked over and acknowledged my existence. We started with the marrow bones. He reluctantly went in the back to prepare them, and I immediately thought I should just head for the door. This clearly wasn't going to be any fun. He came out with the bones (35% more expensive than the same bones at Kowalski's) and waited for me to ask for something else. I pointed to a lovely beef roast in the case. I explained that I was cooking for one, and it was rather large. He reluctantly agreed to cut it in half, and I asked him to wrap both individually so I could freeze one. I was getting more unhappy by the moment. But I went gamely on. I asked about bone-in pork roasts. He condescendingly told me that they don't come small enough for one person, but I could try to come back tomorrow. I explained that I had bought them there before. He said I was just "lucky" then, and tried to lecture me on pork roasts. He said he was doing me a favor by "educating me". That was enough. Instead of just running out the door, like I wanted to, I just told him to ring up what I had. I told him that I just wanted to get out of there, and that this experience was ruining my day. He clearly didn't care. I will NEVER go back. Oddly enough, there were several signs advertising jobs available, but only for people that are "motivated, upbeat, friendly, helpful, customer-driven, etc." The sad sack who waited on me was NONE of those things. Why come to Von Hanson's when I can get MUCH better service at Kowalski's, Rainbow, Cub, etc.? It was a rotten experience, and I will NEVER go back. read more

VonHanson's is the best meat for the buck in the Twin Cities. If your grilling, baking, or frying stop at VonHanson's. I will not eat a Ribeye, or Prime Rib from any other meat market. They are absolutely the BEST! Hands down and miles ahead of the rest. read more
