Mountainside Medical Center - Urine sample that sat on a hallway table for HOURS

The ER experience was one of the worst I've ever had. Registration didn't even happen until 3 hours after we arrived, well into the visit. My son provided a urine sample that sat on a table the entire time and was never tested. While one nurse was a tad bit decent, the rest of the staff showed a shocking lack of professionalism and basic respect. Staff members (including security) were standing in the hallway laughing, having personal conversations, and at one point I heard someone ask a coworker, "Are you ready for your next victim?"--completely inappropriate in a medical setting. The cleanliness was unacceptable. I noticed red spots on the floor and brought it to a staff member's attention, concerned it was blood. I was told, "That's not blood, that's pizza sauce," and they walked away without addressing it. The bathrooms were in terrible condition! We saw urine on the floor, backed-up toilets, and even spider webs in the corners. The place smelled like old urine! There were patients in the hallway in beds because I guess they ran out of rooms? No privacy whatsoever!! It also felt like care was delayed due to a shift change--we were left waiting until the next staff came in rather than being properly attended to. Overall, the level of care was extremely poor, and my son's issue was never fully addressed. The most alarming part came after we left: I realized in addition to my sons discharge papers, I had been given another patient's discharge paperwork, including highly sensitive information like EKG and chest X-ray results, bloodwork, address, phone number, date of birth, medications, reason for his visit and medical history. I contacted risk management three times and never received a response. This experience was unacceptable from start to finish. I would not return here under any circumstances. Please, if you have a choice, go somewhere else.

It has been a year since I was carried into the Mountainside ER by the EMT and 4 Firemen, who I want to thank again! I was involved in a snow blower accident where by the commercial snow blower kicked back and then landed on my right knee. The pain was incredible, I could not move my leg at all and if it was moved even the slightest, the pain was enough to put me in shock. Well, once I was carried in ER. The doctor on duty scheduled a x-ray. MRI's are not available at this ER. Crazy! Also there was not orthopedic doc available. The tech came into my room and asked me to come with him. Ok, really. I told him I could not move at all. So he said oh, I wasn't told. He then left and came back with a portable x-ray device. The angles he tried to move my leg, when I say I would of rather had my teeth pulled out with no novocaine then this pain. After that was complete a 1/2 hr later the doctor came to see me to tell me he saw nothing on the x-ray. I was shocked. He told me to follow-up with a orthopedic doctor. The nurse came in with a full leg brace. She asked me to lift my leg so she could put the brace on. WHAT WEREN'T THEY UNDERSTANDING! I could NOT move my leg. Finally she tried lifting my leg and straightening my leg to fit in this brace thing. Screaming like I have never before. The PAIN I would not invite on anyone! Once my leg was in the brace, she asked me to get up. I still didn't get what was going on. I COULD NOT MOVE! The Nurse and my wife then help me off the stretcher. I wanted to shoot myself in the head at this point. No matter how I describe the pain I felt to you all. It is not even close to the real pain I felt. Well fighting through it, with the nurse and my wifes help I was standing up straight. Now what I said. The nurse wanted my to lower myself into the wheelchair. Now again, any slight move the pain was overbearing. So frustrated at this point I dropped into the wheel chair. SCREAMING ! The pain beyond what any human could take. I said get me up! GET ME UP NOW ! Well sitting was not happening. To now make this long story a bit shorter. I took baby steps to my car that my wife went to get. We have a SUV so she was able to help me get in and lay flat. Once home it was a Sh$# show. Getting out of the car. Up the steps. Well of course the pain got the best of me and I fell from the pain and then laid on the ground for over a hour saying don't move me. Friends came later and got me into bed. I schedule a appointment with a orthopedic surgeon. I had to get there which was not easy. Here is where the story gets interesting. HE LOOKS AT THE XRAY AND SAYS HERE IS THE ISSUE. YOUR KNEE CAP (PATELLA) IS UP IN YOUR THIGH AND YOUR PATELLA TENDON IS COMPLETELY RUPTURED IN HALF. YOU NEED SURGERY ASAP. THANK YOU MOUNTAINSIIDE HOSPITAL FOR making me endure the worst pain imaginable and THE worst experiense of my life. I will never walk right again because of you. : (

The check in process was the absolute WORST! Their computers were down, however, that wasn't the issue, the issue was how the front desk reception team handled it and that was absolutely terrible! Rude, impatient and condescending. Then when they finally came around to getting a bit of order back, they handed me the wrong ID back and said someone would call me back shortly ... SIGH! I was there for a severely sprained ankle and instead of saying someone would wheel me back in a wheelchair, they saw me limping, asked if I needed one, and let me decide on what needed to happen. Once I was in the back I must say that it was a complete 180. The Physician Assistant, Nurses, Radiologist, Support Staff ... everyone was AMAZING! And I felt well taken care of and left confident in my "diagnosis" and follow-up care orders. This is an absolutely torn review because of the first impression ... because let's be real, that's the lasting impression. So, given this, 3 stars is all I can give overall .... If the front does better they'll quickly get to 4-5 stars overall.

I'm surprised by the low rating for this hospital but then again, I can only speak for the ICU. Every doctor and nurse (ok, almost every nurse) were amazing in their attentiveness in caring for my father. No request we had was too great. No questions were a bother. Everyone was extremely helpful and took the time to explain and go over everything that was happening, about to happen or might happen. I just want to shout-out the angels (aka: nurses) of the ICU, especially Jon, Olivia, Barbara and Sean. The ICU waiting room was definitely a second home for the three weeks of nearly daily visits that I made here. Patient Services is located inside the waiting room and they definitely put up with dozens of family members sitting around for hours with Dunkin' Donuts Box of Joe's and loud Polish voices talking and laughing at all hours. Patient Services hooked us up with playing cards, stress balls, blankets and allowed us to use a reclining chair in the room so we could take turns napping. Best of all, they put my family on a list for parking so that we wouldn't have to pay the daily fees. That made visiting a bit less stressful to maintain for three weeks of constant visitations. I wish I wasn't there at all and that I didn't meet all the amazing people that work here, but I did. And for that I can't give them anything short of 5 stars. (Kind of morbid to be reviewing the ICU on yelp, I realize that. No one ever ends up here by choice.)

I originally wrote this review before the 2024 Memorial Day holiday weekend. I rated the facility a…read more"2" then, but more recent experience on May 28, 2024 requires I lower the rating to "1"! You should read the review, but what caused today's revision was learning the MRI report I was informed had been sent the ordering physician on Friday 5/24/24 was not the whole story. A fax was sent Friday, but it was not the actual report. The incompetent party who sent Friday's fax sent a questionnaire connected to my MRI report, but not the actual report. So, it took multiple phone calls on 5/28/24 and tons of frustrating wasted time on 5/28/24 to finally get it done. So? I had used both the hospital and their ambulatory care center a few times previously. Both are in Livingston, NJ. This review regards an MRI that was performed on May 20, 2024. The procedure itself was unremarkable. I did not wait long for an 8AM appointment, which is one of the pluses. The staff were also pleasant and professional. So, why only a 2 out of 5? Everything that followed has been nightmarish and totally unacceptable. It seems since Robert Woods Johnson took over, this place has gone to hell. The followup post-MRI has demonstrated a dysfunctional, disorganized, and non-empathetic group of medical practitioners. What I think of them is unprintable. It's now Friday May 24, 2024 and for three days both I and the ordering physician's office have been calling to get the MRI results sent to the ordering physician. We keep being told the results are not ready and can take 5-7 business days. Huh? I've had MRIs before and results should be available within 24-48 hours. This 5-7 business days is an inexcusable travesty. There's worse though! Worse is there's no one to talk to about why the MRI results should be expedited. This lack of a report is delaying another procedure. And I'm suffering physically due to this facility's lack of efficiency and lack of caring. Every call I seek a patient advocate, but there's no such person. I am told to speak with Ed Figueroa, the radiology department head. That would be great, if he'd answer his phone or return his calls, if the alternate phone number on his voice mail was an actual existing phone number. Unbelievable? It sure is. Uncaring and unsympathetic. No patient advocates? Unheard of. I also tried the ambulatory care center's concierge desk. Donna, a pleasant sounding woman tried to help me. That ultimately went nowhere though. I called her again 2 hours later. Again she's pleasant, but ultimately of no help. Call backs thereafter and she will not pick up the call. Now she's dodging my calls. This is an abomination. This place is to be avoided. If I had real convenient alternative choices, I'd make them. For now, I'm stuck with these folks.

This was an all star experience!…read more If you'll recall, my Gastro devised a dastardly plan to get me from the rooter to the tooter (endoscopy + colonoscopy) at the same time. The appt was originally scheduled for July but I had too much going on at work and in life to also have to navigate anticipatory fat bias in the hospital so I rescheduled. I'm really glad I did. Be aware I am speaking only of same day procedures and the endo clinic specifically. Read on: -Sprawling, modern, clean facility. Masks readily available. -Ample individual and bench style seating (yay!) in all waiting areas -Friendly and patient staff in Registration -Nursing team Awesome! Friendly, discreet, reassuring -Nurse asked her usual list of questions and I know height and weight was one of them but I saw another nurse show her something on a screen and she never asked me aloud. Now, I'm not ashamed and I was with my husband so it was ok to say. He's right where he wants to be after all. But I appreciated the care taken - and I hope that's a practice extended to all patients. You never know someone's struggle. -Gowns that FIT! Even though I had to have it open at the back, the cold air never crossed my peach even when I had to walk the unit to get to the bathroom lmao -Patient with blood pressure readings. Fat patients usually run inaccurate due to ill fitting equipment (hence the anticipatory fat bias). They took it at the start (crazy high) and then a couple times again later once I was relaxed (normal) and didn't make me feel bad about it. -Anesthesiologist - Normal, funny, didn't tell me I'd die once put under because fat (yes that's happened before and guess who's still here alive and kicking). Weight never came up and he gave me the same rundown as the patient next to me. Yes I listened. Because anticipatory fat bias. -My actual doctor was great which is why he's my doctor. The team working with him was kind as well. -People touched my body, repositioned equipment, rubbed my arm in support. Small things that in my experience, are not always done with fat patients but go a long way to easing anxiety. I fully concede the bar is in hell but after 2 days of colonoscopy prep I was already in hell soooo. -Great recovery process. I wasn't rushed and I was given the option of being walked or wheeled down to my car. I had a number of colonoscopies when I was younger due to IBS. And I had an aborted endo a few years ago (I still can't talk about that bc of the trauma). My point is even though I'm familiar with these procedures I was still waiting for the other shoe to drop because of how I am often treated as a fat - and Black female patient. It never happened here though. I hope I don't have to come back BUT IF I DO I know I will be well taken care of. Enjoy the pics of my colon. J/K. Unless...
