Overall excellent experience. Went to the emergency room for pain in my lower right abdomen turned out to be appendices. I had to have an appendectomy. All went well I was out in one day. I recommend to all patients who go to ANY hospital, you must ask questions. It will make your visit more comprehensible to you and your family. Know what meds you're getting, ask why is it being given, and ask about whatever you're diagnosed with. All questions are valid and help you and your team of doctors get the best care that's right for you. You have the right to refuse meds if you don't want them. It's all in your patient's bill of rights you sign upon arrival. The one thing that could have been improved on, was the communication of staff within themselves. I am lucky I'm not afraid to ask questions or question things. You must! it's your body and you should know what's being administered and why. Overall, this hospital was great. Dr's bedside manners were friendly and knowledgeable. The nurses were informative. I have to say I had a good experience considering I had to have surgery. I would strongly advise anyone to avoid this hospital if at all possible. My son was brought here by ambulance, so unfortunately we didn't have a choice because of where we were at the time and that's the only reason we ended up here. The ER experience was one of the worst I've ever had. Registration didn't even happen until 3 hours after we arrived, well into the visit. My son provided a urine sample that sat on a table the entire time and was never tested. While one nurse was a tad bit decent, the rest of the staff showed a shocking lack of professionalism and basic respect. Staff members (including security) were standing in the hallway laughing, having personal conversations, and at one point I heard someone ask a coworker, "Are you ready for your next victim?"--completely inappropriate in a medical setting. The cleanliness was unacceptable. I noticed red spots on the floor and brought it to a staff member's attention, concerned it was blood. I was told, "That's not blood, that's pizza sauce," and they walked away without addressing it. The bathrooms were in terrible condition! We saw urine on the floor, backed-up toilets, and even spider webs in the corners. The place smelled like old urine! There were patients in the hallway in beds because I guess they ran out of rooms? No privacy whatsoever!! It also felt like care was delayed due to a shift change--we were left waiting until the next staff came in rather than being properly attended to. Overall, the level of care was extremely poor, and my son's issue was never fully addressed. The most alarming part came after we left: I realized in addition to my sons discharge papers, I had been given another patient's discharge paperwork, including highly sensitive information like EKG and chest X-ray results, bloodwork, address, phone number, date of birth, medications, reason for his visit and medical history. I contacted risk management three times and never received a response. This experience was unacceptable from start to finish. I would not return here under any circumstances. I am sorry to say I had a very bad experience at the mountainside medical center ER: I hate to give bad reviews but I have bitten my lip for much to long now. It has been a year since I was carried into the Mountainside ER by the EMT and 4 Firemen, who I want to thank again! I was involved in a snow blower accident where by the commercial snow blower kicked back and then landed on my right knee. The pain was incredible, I could not move my leg at all and if it was moved even the slightest, the pain was enough to put me in shock. Well, once I was carried in ER. The doctor on duty scheduled a x-ray. MRI's are not available at this ER. Crazy! Also there was not orthopedic doc available. The tech came into my room and asked me to come with him. Ok, really. I told him I could not move at all. So he said oh, I wasn't told. He then left and came back with a portable x-ray device. The angles he tried to move my leg, when I say I would of rather had my teeth pulled out with no novocaine then this pain. After that was complete a 1/2 hr later the doctor came to see me to tell me he saw nothing on the x-ray. I was shocked. He told me to follow-up with a orthopedic doctor. The nurse came in with a full leg brace. She asked me to lift my leg so she could put the brace on. WHAT WEREN'T THEY UNDERSTANDING! I could NOT move my leg. Finally she tried lifting my leg and straightening my leg to fit in this brace thing. Screaming like I have never before. The PAIN I would not invite on anyone! Once my leg was in the brace, she asked me to get up. I still didn't get what was going on. I COULD NOT MOVE! The Nurse and my wife then help me off the stretcher. I wanted to shoot myself in the head at this point. No matter how I describe the pain I felt to you all. It is not even close to the real pain I felt. Well fighting through it, with the nurse and my wifes help I was standing up straight. Now what I said. The nurse wanted my to lower myself into the wheelchair. Now again, any slight move the pain was overbearing. So frustrated at this point I dropped into the wheel chair. SCREAMING ! The pain beyond what any human could take. I said get me up! GET ME UP NOW ! Well sitting was not happening. To now make this long story a bit shorter. I took baby steps to my car that my wife went to get. We have a SUV so she was able to help me get in and lay flat. Once home it was a Sh$# show. Getting out of the car. Up the steps. Well of course the pain got the best of me and I fell from the pain and then laid on the ground for over a hour saying don't move me. Friends came later and got me into bed. I schedule a appointment with a orthopedic surgeon. I had to get there which was not easy. Here is where the story gets interesting. HE LOOKS AT THE XRAY AND SAYS HERE IS THE ISSUE. YOUR KNEE CAP (PATELLA) IS UP IN YOUR THIGH AND YOUR PATELLA TENDON IS COMPLETELY RUPTURED IN HALF. YOU NEED SURGERY ASAP. They just hold them there as long as their insurance allows and then commit the patient and dump them elsewhere. The screeners are from Clara Maas and are incompetent. If you or a loved one requires psychiatric care, DO NOT BRING THEM THERE. They mock their patients and abuse them. No actual care happens. Folks what ever you do in the world don't ever come to this place! First off valet is nothing but some lazy bums! These guys are so lazy that they refuse to move from their little booth. The guys who were there was a guy who seemed Peruvian and a guy with a long pony tail. The Peruvian was yelling at me from the booth asking if I'm waiting for valet..... I said yes I need valet, he then says are you picking up...????!!!! Like what?? Huh??? Then he says drive down here.... There was a guy in a truck before me who got frustrated with these guys as well and he drove off as did I. Mind you I had 2 infants in the car with me......... then after I had to park around by the emergency room ( the Latina who was inside the valet parking garage didn't want to roll her window down so I can ask her a question, she just said no.... I was trying ti ask a question like cmon where's the customer service?????? Next after walking all the way around the building the Peruvian guy and the guy with the pony tail tried to argue with me about the valet and what there job is ( they both seemed as if they wanted to attack me in front of my children) ( this was Thursday afternoon around 1/2pm) Then when entering the maternity ward I ring the bell I tell the nurse the room number and she acts as if she didn't hear me so I yell it out and then she buzzed me in while talkin to another nurse saying " these ppl disgust me". At this point I myself was disgusted with the way this hospital staff not only interacts but overall behaves........ the next thing is the kitchen staff got our food wring 3 days in a row!!!! Forgetting the diet drink as I'm a diabetic, ( they sent Pepsi) next the the shift change nurses were not only mean and rude asf but they don't care too much for the patients because my wife was calling and asking for meds and the one nurse pushed everything off on another nurse....... ( now this nurse was very nice caring and attentive) next while filling out paperwork for the birth certificate they had a questionnaire about my job, my home, my background. I told her I refuse to put any of that done/fill this info out there's no need. She then tried to argue with me and say oh it's mandatory ( folks that's not mandatory ) she then left with an attitude. Next was valet the final day which was Saturday afternoon at 11:30am this tall Caucasian male ( but he was Latino) was not only arguing with me but was arguing with the older women at the desk when they were speaking to him about allowing ppl to park so they can pick a patient up. Same day medical / endoscopy reception/ intake is the absolute WORST. My first appointment was supposed to be at 11:30 on a Wednesday. They called me the day before and told me to show up 2 hours early. For what??? I did it anyway and basically waiting in the waiting room for an entire 45 minutes because a physician (not mine) was running late and was causing a backlog with intake. On top of that, during the phone call the day prior, I was asked for my social, my employer, literally all the things that are not necessary for medical care (I work in healthcare) and I declined all. What happens when I walk in? I start being asked all of those stupid questions again so I had to politely decline AGAIN. My other issue was I declined a pregnancy test because, unless I'm the Virgin Mary, there was no way I could be pregnant. Male anesthesiology attending made me get one anyway after some extensive back and forth where I kept declining. And they even have signs in the stalls that say you can decline care you don't think is appropriate. Anything so they can bill insurance, right? My next time I had to show up a month later, I was told again on the phone call a day prior that I had to show up at 7am for my 8am appointment. I asked why. Was told they need prep time. Ok. I live 35 min away. As I'm pulling into the parking lot at 7am, I get a phone call from reception asking if I can come an hour later. Are you absolutely kidding me? You call me at the moment you asked me to show up? Did you think I hadn't left yet? Did you think I could magically teleport home? Did you really think that phone call at the exact moment I was supposed to show up was going to do Jack all? Then, cherry on the top, guess what they ask me when I go to check in? Social, employer, etc. At this point I said, I already declined all this a month ago, to which the same exact receptionist that I spoke to last time goes "I don't know anything about that." I ended up waiting an hour and a half to go in. Then another hour for questions that had nothing to do with what I was there for. The actual thing I was there for took five minutes. Unfortunately, this was a terrible emergency room visit and I have already told people I know to steer as far away from this ER as possible. I went because my doctor requested I get some scans as I had just had surgery and was having some breathing problems, and most of the staff was condescending, rude, and unhelpful. Special shoutout to Nurse Nelda and Dr Anthony Strobolakos (the main ER doctor) for being the worst medical providers i've ever had the misfortune of dealing with. He specifically seemed like he could not care less about my health or me as a person. Nurse Nelda was trying to convince me to open my freshly wrapped sutures (that my surgeon had checked the previous day and said were FINE) just because Dr S was the main physician and that's what he wanted to do. They wouldn't stop pushing for it until I called my surgeon and he had to tell them no. I was there for 5 hours which was expected, but had to do 3 extra extremely unnecessary tests (of course). Also, there were mouse traps everywhere- gross!!!! Please go literally anywhere else and you would get better care than the Mountainside ER, I wish I could give my experience 0 stars. read more

So I went to this hospital since my boyfriend recommended it to me but I was hesitant to go due to all the bad reviews on yelp. He recommended it to me because I was in severe abdominal pain yesterday. Upon arrival all of the staff members from the security guard to the secretary, nurses, technician and doctor were all extremely friendly and professional. The person that made the biggest impact on me while I was there was a nurse named Tracy. She accommodated me so I could feel more comfortable. She made me laugh because I was crying due to the severe pain I had. And also she insured me over and over that everything was going to be all right because she saw how nervous I was. Another person that I remember quite well was Gaston, even though all he did was escort me from the ultrasound room to the regular patient room the whole experience on the way there he made me feel comfortable because once again he saw how nervous, afraid and how much I was just overall in pain. The only complaint I have is that I feel as if the staff from nurse one to nurse to to the head nurse to the technician to the registration person ... should have just overall better communication with one another because I had to keep on repeating over and over to different people (5) The exact same story over (of why I am there & what hurts) and over and over again. And when you're in pain it gets kind of annoying doing that but like I stated in the beginning, I really enjoyed this hospital and I'm really sad that a lot of people have given bad reviews because I don't think this place deserves that. Now I'm a healthy woman I exercise on the regular, which means I highly doubt I will be back anytime soon but if I do happen to have an emergency then this will definitely be my first pick. I can't express enough how horrible my experience was at Mountainside Hospital. If they had strapped me to a gurney and left me in the parking lot for the evening, alone in the middle of winter, that would have amounted to the treatment I received. I had my kidney taken out and was supposed to be in the hospital for a couple of days. I woke up feeling sick and rang for the nurse to ask if I could have something for the nausea. Literally 30 minutes later she poked her head in and told me, "We can't give you anything." (and they meant ANYTHING - not a glass of water, not jello, not an aspirin...nothing). About a half hour later, I got violently ill and started throwing up. My stitches broke open and I was bleeding all over the bed. In addition to this, I had a catheter which they had taken the full bag off but never replaced it, so now I got to throw up, bleed and pee all over the hospital bed. I rang for the nurse and about an hour later someone poked their head in. They left and came back about 45 minutes later with some band aids. I told them to call my doctor (it was 3 am now) and since there was blood, vomit and urine all over at that point, they were starting to look nervous . They took my blood pressure, which, at that point was up to 180. (I'm normally about 130/80) The nurse kept telling the woman working with her, "Don't write that down!" The next morning, I told the doctor I was fine and wanted to go home. In real life, I would have been in an actual hospital for a few days. He signed off on me and I asked 4 different people to take the IV out of my hand. No one did, and about 2 hours later, I ended up taking it out myself (with my discharge papers in hand) and leaving. No one came with a wheelchair to pick me up, so I finally just walked out. I slept for 2 days and to this day I still have a scar left over from my stitches coming out. Horrible just isn't a strong enough word to describe my experience. read more

I was neglected for hours and when I asked after a simple urinalysis the charge nurse came in the room and was incredibly aggressive and confrontational asking me if I " had a problem " after my urine had not been processed for 2 hours. I saw the same nurse berate a college and ignore me when I asked where I could exit. She encouraged a patient who made nasty comments to me while expressing myself and was incredibly confrontational over a urinalysis that her staff failed to complete. I waisted 5 hours of my life. It seems strange to write a review of a hospital on Yelp, but I have nowhere else to go. I was a patient in January, it's now almost the end of March. I have Crohn's and was experiencing an extreme flare, not great but not extremely out of the norm (happens a few times a year). Went to the emergency room, as I'm new to the area and didn't have a new GI yet. The highlights: - They admitted me overnight from the ER for an emergency colonoscopy - The nurses who put the IV in my arm nearly collapsed my vein - Patient liaison was requested to discuss billing, had to request 3 times - Doctors did not listen when I told them the usual care procedure for my flares, gave me a different care procedure that has failed in the past, flare continued for 2 months - In pre-op, a nurse thought I was post-op and started wheeling me back upstairs, wouldn't listen to me, another nurse stopped her. - They attempted to charge me for 3 nights when I'd only been admitted for 1 - It's been almost 4 months, insurance processed my claim within a week, the hospital still will not release my bill so I can pay my copay DO. NOT. COME HERE. The only reason you should come to this hospital is if you're unconscious in an ambulance, and then when you wake up, have them transfer you to St. Barnabas or Morristown. Came here a couple months ago on a Sunday for my son. I had a little wait in the waiting area with my son bleeding from his chin, but they were busy. About 15 minutes. After that we were taken to the room with the nurse, took our information down and moved to a room. we didn't get to see a doctor for another 10 minutes because again, it was busy. But as soon as we got taken care of the Dr was able to stitch up my son's chin and off we went. Dr and nurse was very nice and we appreciate that they calmed me down because this was my son's first emergency room visit. I had an endoscopy with a Bravo. The dr. and the nurses were excellent. Hoever, the patient amenities at the hospital were awful, its in the 90"s. First, your immediate family member(husband, wife, son, daughter) isn't allowed in Pre-Op or POst-op. The CEO needs to wake up, Covid is an endemic virus. Secondly, I had to cry to my nurse for my husband to be allowed in post-op, I had genreal anesthesia and I didn't remenber half of whay MY GI told me. Thank goodness my husband spoke to my dr. Finally, St. Barnabus and Morristown provide food , from the in-patient's kitchen and with the advice of a nutrionist; you can order a meal in post-op. St. Baranbus has a Starbucks in the hospital for the patient "s families. Mountainside doesn't-you get an F. I was given a muffin and I was in pain, I couldn't eat the muffin, and the coffee was awful. This hospital's CEO and Board of Directors need to spend some funds , which they get from the insurance companies and remodel the waiting room for family members, Mountainside's waiting room is on a different floor. By far the worst hospital I have ever been to. Everyone is rude and acts like you're bothering them. Unhelpful. Slow. And did I mention RUDE. My boyfriend and I went there as he had an accident in the kitchen and cut his hand open on a broken wine glass. the nerve was exposed and it was bleeding like crazy. He was nearly crying out in pain the entire time. After waiting for nearly an hour, and asking several times, with only 2 other patients, they finally stitched it up in the worst way possible. It was so bad and he was in so much pain that we ended up needing to go to a hand specialist the following day. He had to have surgery just to get it fixed. Needless to say- spent money in an emergency room just to go and spend even more money on a hand specialist and surgery just to fix what mountainside messed up!! I just visited Mountainside Same Day Medical to receive a Cardioversion (electric treatment for heart arrhythmia) and was so touched and impressed with the warm and caring treatment I received. The staff was so attentive and supportive, and always with a good sense of humor. I wish I could remember all the names, but Terry, Chris, Stephanie and Eric stand out. They all worked so seamlessly together. Later I learned that the computers were down so they had to generate all the records in hard copy. That must have been very stressful, yet none of the staff showed it. The work these nurses and aides do is so important and yet is often thankless. So I want to thank them all. Probably the worst I have seen in the amount of time it took from getting to the ER and be seen by the DR. We got there at 7:30PM.,admitted at 8PM and the DR decided to see us at 12:30AM! Oh wait, let's order some tests. It is now 3AM and we have been told that since it's after 11PM, the results of the CT won't be avail be until the next day! So I ask myself as I patiently shake my head, why is this hospital still around? I've seen other reviews and I'm clearly not the only one that has had to wait for such long hours. The initial ER experience was unsatisfactory since my husband was admitted and had to wait 6 hours for a room. The skill level is adequate but it is the lack of compassion that has to make you wonder why these individuals chose a field to care for humans yet treat them so poorly. Finally moved to the 2nd floor and was provided initial care at 3pm on May 7 by two WONDERFUL nurses. They epitomize the definition of what nurses should be. However, only a few short hours later there was a new nurse who was totally the opposite and very much like the review from Danise of April 15 2023 seems to hate her job and was taking it out on others. We've been waiting on a 2nd urinalysis since 6pm. 3:30pm just to get into a room. 5pm for a nurse to come to the door, and just now at 8:30pm did they take my wife's vitals, they took her pee twice her blood and gave her meds at 6:30pm. This is a pathetic hospital to go to. Please do yourself a favor and go to another one. You'll sooner bleed out in the emergency room before you get seen here. I was in the ER yesterday ( 9/9/19) for 8 hours in excruciating pain due to a fall post total hip replacement at Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. In all that time I wasn't given any pain meds that helped at least tone down the pain. I had to ask for a blanket and a pillow (lying on a gurney for all that time isn't comfortable in the least much less with an extremely painful leg). I had nothing to eat or drink and even after asking for water I never got it. The ER doc did his best to keep up with everyone in the ER but it took hours to get a bit of medication, and to get the xray and CT scan and the results. I never ever saw or spoke to the orthopedic doc re my injury or follow up procedures. When I was finally discharged I was given a sheaf of papers which included someone else's test results. The meds that I was on weren't as I reported to the nurse (not Eric who did the best he could). And finally when I was able to go I had to once again remind the tech that I couldn't bear weight and was in a lot of pain so required a wheelchair. I was then rolled out to the curb, the wheelchair locked, and the tech went back inside leaving me to wait for my ride and fend for myself getting into my friend's car, once almost falling as he wasn't sure how to help me. Overall I wasn't impressed at all with any of it. The staff who helped me with xrays and CT scan were fine. Eric did the best he could with his case load but I really didn't get the feeling that anyone knew exactly why I was there or what I needed, no matter how many times I repeated it to whoever I came into contact with. I had hoped to be taken to St. Barnabas' ER instead of Mountainside but wasn't able to get there due to Bloomfield EMS having only 1 truck and crew working Monday morning. Bottom line I hope I never have to deal with the ER at Mountainside again. read more

I've had a battery of tests over the last few months and have honestly been very thankful for the kindness of everybody involved. On my last trip on Friday, I had a colonoscopy--which is never going to be a "fun" time--but everyone involved, from Diane at the desk, Dr. Arena (gastrologist), nurses Josefa, Eric, Terry, Christopher, and Dr. Giannuzzi, were pleasant and patient an exuded competence and got me through an anxious occurrence with speed, yet calmness. There's also a facility with great doctors across the street. Seriously, I don't get all the bad reviews (I guess there's a lot going on at hospitals that makes people not want to rate them highly), because of all the ones I've been to, this one just has the best vibes, transparencies. Even once when I had a freakout due to an insurance/paperwork issue, the administrator in radiology sat down with me til we figured it out and the procedure got done. All depends on the doctor you get in the emergency room. I arrived last night in servere pain from Interstitial Lung Disease and massive scar tissue...I need a lung replacement. Dr Maroon was great....listened and responded. Then he left and a Dr SAPIRA apparantly took over the shift....I sat unable to sleep overnight in pain for over 5 hrs in the ER room, only to have this QUACK tell me I have Chronic Pneumonia and he was discharging me. Never checked me physically at all, never asked any questions of me, didn't really talk to me at all...He looked at me and cast judgement. He then wrote me a script for meds I already take. When I pleaded with him , he turned his back on me he said 'We don't negotiate here'. Horrible experience due to luck of the draw, I got the shortest straw DR SAPIRA... read more

I was rushed to Mountainside Hospital with a crushing head ache. It felt like a metal band squeezing my head. I explained my condition. They rushed me in the examination room right away. They then sent me to Saint Barnabus Hospital in Livingston, NJ. They in turn took me straight to the O. R. Turns out, I was having an brain aneurysm. They did a procedure right away that stopped the bleeding in my brain. I'm forever grateful to the Mountainside Hospital staff, St Barnabus, Dr. Nair and his staff as I, Thank You Father God, have no visible effects due to the fast action everyone took. read more

If I could give this hospital some advice and no stars . Hire more people. I am trying to be kind because I realize the whole world is short staffed but when you have to see your elderly parent suffering and stuck in the ER from 9 am till (as I am writing this) 915 pm and still not admitted to a room. It's one thing if it was only me but to hear the discord even amongst employees THATS when you know there is a problem. I can't say enough nice things about the nurses and receptionists but that's where my nice words end. I do believe this hospital needs a refresher course in kindness and compassion. This will be my father's last time coming to this hospital. We will take the 10 minute extra drive to Saint Barnabas in Livingston. The CEO Mr. Tim O'Brien needs to check the yelp and maybe give us a call back / email back or better yet....have one of his loved ones spend a day there when they are sick read more

Came in with a sprained ankle ... they took an x-ray. 18 months later I get a bill for $5698. Called them , said it seemed outrageous... asked them if there was any way to make this bill more reasonable as covid has put me out of work for the past several months. Came here for the emergency room after some severe trauma to my toe :( Was a bit skeptical as I usually go to Morristown Memorial for anything and everything. I was quite pleased with their services. Staff was EXTREMELY friendly and accomidating. Wait time was non existent.
