Unfortunately they discovered that the front seal was damaged. He advised me that the rebuild of the transmission would be about $4000 , but based on age and mileage more than 250k he didn't recommend that. I really respected his honesty and advice. He could have tried to convince me to spend the money to fix it,but he didn't. That kind of honesty is rare in the auto repair business in my experience. He did give me some advice on how to keep the van running a bit longer and I appreciated that. I 100% would recommend this shop if you have transmission issues.

We also have dinner plans 6 hours away that next day and if we can't get this fixed quickly the next day we are not going to make it. We had this exact scenario happen along US50. The car suddenly starts slowing down on its own, we limped off the highway onto a (what seemed) remote road and pulled into a parking lot. Instantly I'm checking Yelp for towing services and repair facilities. I found that we were just a short distance from Athens Transmission. They were closed, but I made sure my vehicle was there waiting for them first thing in the morning. Patrick contacted me first thing, just before they opened. He said they should be able to take a look at it today. He asked if I was just passing through, which I was. I had a nice lady that was willing to drive us to and from our BNB and I didn't want to put her out. About 11am that morning Patrick called to let me know it was all finished and ready to pick up. I was stunned! I was already looking for car rentals or a Uhaul to drive home. He explained it was just a radiator hose and they had one in stock and were able to get me on the road right away. We are so grateful! I know they were busy, but they were able to squeeze us in and get us back on the road. What a team! We even made our dinner arrangements :) When I received the follow up a couple days later to check that all was well, I was even more impressed. A great team, friendly people, impressive service, and professional follow up. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Athens Transmission and their amazing service!

He gave me a quote of $3,000+ to replace the engine. However, he recommended that I junk the car. He said he'd give me $350 for it and would haul it to the junk yard. I agreed, thinking the car wasn't worth another few thousand dollars since I had already put in over $1,000 at his shop. That was a few months ago. Today I drove by and saw the same car for sale. I stopped in and asked him how much he wanted for it. He told me, "Whatever I can get." The point of the story is that this guy either lied to me or he's trying to sell a hunk of junk. Steve and his shop are not trustworthy. Avoid them.

He will be coming back to the states next month to finish his last two years before retirement from the Air Force. He isn't going to have a lot of time when he gets to Parkersburg before he has to pick up some belongings and head to Utah. He asked me if, since I was his power of attorney, I could go ahead and find a good truck and sign all the paperwork for him. My wife and I spent a day and drove through all of the car lots in Parkersburg and Marietta and found one that had all of the options he wanted at Matheny Motors. We expressed to the salesman that we would take it. There was an issue that needed resolved but regardless we would take it and be back. The salesman was off the next day and for whatever reason, the truck was sold the day he was off. When I called at 9AM the next morning when he returned, he told me what had happened. Needless to say I was upset but there is nothing that can be done at that point. Heather Whitlock, the new car sales manager found out about the issue and called me. We had a discussion and she simply asked what she could do to fix the problem. After some more discussion, she began looking for what my son was interested in and within a few hours, called me with what she found. The vehicle she found had more options and was, really, a better vehicle then what we had originally chose. We went down, test drive it, loved it, and sat down to work out a deal. Heather immediately said that she felt terrible about what had happened and offered a price that was truly, better than I had ever imagined. There was no haggle and no back and forth. The next day I took a check to Heather and picked up the truck. I have purchased new and used vehicles for many decades but have NEVER had such an outstanding experience in buying a vehicle. Heather Whitlock and Sean Tallman, another salesman that assisted me were the best, and both bent over backwards to make this the sales experience we all dream about when we think of a car purchase. If you are interested in a great deal with great staff and a great dealership, I would highly recommend visiting Matheny Motors. I do not think you will be disappointed. And one more time, thank you Heather and Sean!
