I was in commercial real estate development for over 30 years. I was responsible for the development and construction of several million square feet of industrial and office buildings. However, this time I was in need of a residential concrete contractor because my second story deck and porch were starting to move and were out of level because the concrete patio area underneath my deck and porch structures was cracking and heaving. My patio door would not close properly! I was concerned that the next freezing and thawing cycle over the winter would perhaps severely damage both structures. I also needed my front sidewalk either repaired or replaced because it was sunken in one spot and cracked in another. I looked on Yelp for some favorable reviews of residential concrete concrete companies. I saw that Hage Concrete Works had some excellent reviews. I knew their location because I had driven by it several times there were also several other concrete contractors to choose from however, I chose Hage to come out and give me an estimate. They also have a great warranty. Mike Hage promptly came out that week, looked at my job, and forwarded me an estimate. It was a complex job, however, their estimate was fair and detailed exactly what they would do to remedy my concrete issue. The estimate detailed specifications for the job that seemed logical. They also had quite an extensive list of previous work. They had done in my area. They were about 6 to 8 weeks out before they could start construction. I was OK with that as long as it was done before winter. I sent Mike an email and said that I would accept their proposal and forward them a check for down payment on the work. Hage hired a residential contractor by the name of New Leaf Restorations to brace up the deck and patio because the old deck posts and footings we're going to be removed by New Leaf and new footings poured below the frost line at a minimum of 5 feet deep and new posts would be installed to on the new footings to support the deck and porch. New leaf came, braced the deck and porch and removed the posts. Then the next day a Hage crew came and removed the old patio and sidewalk. The following day, the forming crew came and prepared both areas for new concrete. The day after that, the new concrete was pumped into place, trawled and leveled out. A long line was stretched from the street where the pumping machine was to my backyard in the lower level. It was quite an operation to observe. The new sidewalk was also poured and they took special care to slope it away from my house so that it would drain properly. Everything is now level again and my patio door closes properly. They took special care to clean up after themselves when the job was done into repair the damaged lawn next to the concrete with new black dirt. I was so impressed with them for taking such care and to be sure that I was a happy customer. I have to say that all the Hage employees and those of subcontractor were very skilled, professional and personable. I have had a lot of experience with construction companies and subcontractors in various fields, and I can tell the difference between a good construction company and one that does shotty work. Hage Concrete Works is a wonderful company to work with and they do excellent work! Their subcontractor is also very good. I would recommend to anybody in need of a good concrete construction company to consider Hage. They are a family owned company that have been in business since 1930. Whether it's a complicated job like mine or an easy job, I'm sure you would be very happy with the work they do and the great employees that they have doing the work. read more

Their customer service is second to none while their crews are very professional and willing to do whatever needs to be done to make the results perfect. Scott and Adam were wonderful at running various aspects of our (second Hage) project and the concrete finishing is just fantastic. (Our adult son who is in real estate development saw the concrete stairs and stoops and declared them to be "perfect." I agree.) As a formerly registered Architect, retired General Contractor, and an active real estate developer, I can attest to the extremely high quality of their work, follow through, and communication. Ok, so I've had three different masonry operations out to work on my "ooops, it's a fixer-upper" house. The first company did (mostly) good work, but was a mess on the backend. The second was an absolute nightmare in every respect. Hage, my third masonry go-round, is The Goldilocks Company. So far, Hage has: built me a beautiful brick retaining wall; redone my front walk (it looks great and is SO MUCH EASIER to shovel); repointed my stone foundation; rebuilt the concrete cap on my basement walkout; and rebuilt a stone wall that Contractor #2 damn near destroyed as part of some attempted change order scam. In the next year or two, I'll have Hage back out to fix/rebuild my stone porch. Is Hage the cheapest concrete company out there? No. But they do excellent work, and they're extremely easy to work with: professional, knowledgeable, & communicative. If you've ever had a bad contractor experience, you *know* how priceless true professionalism is. Personally, I prefer to pay my contractors in money, rather than in a combination of money, stress, years off my life, & small-to-moderate chunks of what remains of my sanity -- and the great thing about Hage is that I got all this work done without a single free trip to Contractor Hell. I have used Hage for three projects and have been extremely happy with them. I give them my unqualified recommendation. They are not inexpensive but the quality of their work is very high. The most recent project was the most extensive that they have done for me. It was the re-paving of my garage floor, the apron in front of my garage, and a moderately long driveway. My old garage, apron, driveway combination must have been at least 60 years old and was badly cracked. I had,however, put off having the work done as I was worried about the disruption because of the proximity to my back yard to the apron. I envisioned an entire precious Minnesota summer destroyed by jack hammers, dust, trucks, destruction of my lawn and garden, etc. But in the event Hage came in and completed the job in three days with a minimum of discomfort and disruption of our lives. The project supervisor Kelly and his team have been together for 10 years and it shows. The group worked together like the proverbial well oiled machine. They did a quality job with minimal disruption even though they were working in tight quarters between my house and that of my neighbors (as you can see from my photo). I am extremely pleased with my entire experience with Hage and wouldn't consider anyone else for any future work I may have done. read more

Hage replaced a platform step for me that is above an old well room on my home in Richfield. I am very happy with the final result, but am giving four stars, because it did take two rounds to get it right -- the first step they installed leaked into the basement. However, I was VERY impressed at how seriously they took the issue and made sure it was corrected properly. They clearly seem to stand by their work, and I would use them again. The final result is beautiful. I also really appreciate their suggestion of doing exposed aggregate to match my patio -- it had not even occurred to me until the sales guy suggested it. The estimate was a little higher than competitors, but after walking around neighborhood we noticed that the quality of Hage work was superior. It was easy to spot Hage's work ... not only because of the artistry and craftmanship, but Hage sinks a small "HAGE" plaque into each finished product. I urge you to call Hage, get an estimate and walk around the city looking at previous jobs. When you see the HAGE plaque, observe the attention to detail and the different concrete finishes they offer. I recommend the Old St Paul finish. The transferable warranty and follow-up service will leave your home with invaluable curb appeal for the next 100 years. Did a great job replacing front steps and sidewalk to garage! Would recommend Hage Concrete.

We chose Hage to replace our concrete steps because we thought they would be a trustworthy company. Mike Hage told us he wasn't sure they would get to our project before winter but we could put a 10% deposit down ($595) to hold the price for next year. In retrospect, that should have been a red flag because every other contractor we talked to wouldn't take any money until they showed up to do the job. We ended up changing our plans before Hage even scheduled our project-- still telling us they might not get to it until next year. We asked for our deposit back and he said no, essentially because in a document they sent us (but not the contract we signed) it stated that deposits are nonrefundable. We asked if he would please consider a partial refund, as I can understand the time it took to give us the estimate (even though those are free). He replied saying that our $595 deposit doesn't even begin to cover the work their office does "printing photos, making job packets, and purchasing the permit." I asked if any of that work had even been done considering our job wasn't even going to be done until next year. He replied saying, "I am your salesman not the owner or your scapegoat. Please direct any further inquiries to the office directly as I have no knowledge of what has or has not been done-which makes no difference anyway." Shocked by this rude and inconsiderate response. No accountability from Mike Hage of Hage Concrete. Hope this review prevents someone else from getting swindled. read more
