Travers Park has been a fixture in the Jackson Heights community for the better part of the last 70…read moreyears. It has been a haven for outdoor everything (#1), an ideal spot for the youngins to unleash some energy, and is the site of the weekly Jackson Heights Greenmarket (#2). Named after the local community icon Thomas Travers, it was unveiled to the public in 1949. After a few facelifts in the past few decades, it's become one of the more utilized parks in the borough. Most recently there has been some serious renovation to improve the playground and the half acre of land known as Rory Staunton Field. Fast forward to 2022, it all looks lovely. At just over 2 acres, it's sizable for NYC standards. There are a lot of areas to lounge and lay out, a handful of chess tables, a sprawling kid's area, and plenty of benches to sit on. It's a great people watching area and is in the quieter part of the neighborhood; a stone's throw away from the congestion of Roosevelt Ave. In addition the farmer's market on the weekends, there has been Summer Sundays in the Park, which are seasonal performances put on by local Queens non-profits. This is one of the few places I'd recommend for folks to come check out on a casual weekend. Travers Park had a $7.1 million renovation during the Pandemic - and it completely shows! The transformation was truly amazing where there is a beautiful grassy lawn along 34th Ave., PLENTY of nice clean, new benches to lounge on by yourself or with family and friends, new playground equipment and sprinklers, tennis courts (whereas before was just ugly plain asphalt), and long picnic tables, chess tables, and even an amphitheater space. AND ... *drumroll*.... YES, TWO dog runs (1 for smaller dogs and the other for larger)!!! Other Jackson Heights residents and I really pressed our local government to please provide and they delivered!!! These 2 dog runs are side by side and occupy what used to be 1 of 2 handball courts (1 still remains). These dog runs have a long hose that runs water to clean off these grounds and provide drinking water for dogs who visit. (And of course, it has a large poop bag dispenser right in front in case any owner forgot to bring theirs from home!) And YES, there are events that occur during the warm weather months in this park. NOW WHERE IS AN UPDATED MAP OF THIS GORGEOUS PLACE - ???

A bit noisy and since its neighboring JFK airport there's the added airplane noises. Kids don't seem to mind or care for that matter. During hot months it's a heat buster heaven with the giant frog sprinklers blasting. Most areas are shaded by trees and wind is always blowing here. Lots of benches around and some tables with chairs. Basketball court and handball courts are at one end. Major downside here however is that there's no bathroom. The location serves as more like a backyard playground to many of the homes that are across the street . Still not a good excuse to not have a bathroom. There's no direct parking spots right outside the park either. Its the kind of location that you would probably drive by and then wonder how to get into the park but by that time you've already passed it. So the tip is to drive down Lefferts Blvd a block or 2 and find parking on one of the side streets to the left or right . Then walk back to the park. (Be careful crossing- it's the Conduit after all,but there is a crosswalk) If you're ever flight delayed this is a good park to come with little ones to kill time and burn off some energy. Its a quick walk over from the Long Term Parking area at JFK. You'll see lots of airline workers who live close by walking to work.

This park is huge and has several parts . While we always go to the lower levels for playground/…read more basketball areas we decided to visit the upper level Ridgewood Reservoir area . It's an elevated area with views of Brooklyn and Queens . You came see the ait traffic towers at JFK and even The Rockaways from some points. To get up top there are staircases all around the park. If you enter on the side facing parking lot there is an accessible ramp that takes you to the top as well. Up top you can walk or bike ( shared pathway). Walk around to check out the views or hit the middle pathway for the reservoir views. Signage is good and there are lots of historical and informational checkpoints. We went sort of mid morning and it wasn't crowded. Other evening and weekends when we visited other parts of the park there's been a significant amount of people but not crowded. The parking lot however can get jam packed on weekends. Lots of park workers around cleaning and giving directions etc , It's a well kept park. The picnic areas are nice as well. One side of the Reservoir is very noise due to the Jackie Robinson highway running along that end , heavy traffic sounds. Other than that it was a peaceful walk and bird /nature sounds were quite audible. I nice place to get your steps in and enjoy views.

There are no sharp inclines or steep, rocky hills. I like to walk these trails to admire nature and all it's worth. The lake that I came across while walking today made me want to jump in and swim(not sure if that's allowed). Aside from the trails, there are other little playgrounds in the area that might appeal to children.

Thumbs up to their Environmental Center which is very helpful in providing educational programs. I like the availability of car parking and multiple entrances, though some trails are better than others. The best part that I enjoy in this park is it marks the start/end of the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway trail path, it is historic, a scenic trail for walking, running, and biking, a beautiful, green space that offers a break from the city, and the paved path connects it to other parks. The trail path extends about 3 miles which makes it a 6 miles trekking distance out and back. In most weekend mornings, there is a great chance that you might see me walking/biking on this trail, so, see you there.
