Great atmosphere, it's like a maze, one cafe within another space, pretty neat. We tried their mekong citrus special which is a lime and expresso summer drink. Exactly what I was looking for. Tart, refreshing, and no sweet flavor at all. The coffee is on the acidic side, clean tasting, not too smoky or bitter. It's like a lime-nade with coffee flavor. A really nice drink for summer.

Very nice nostalgic local coffee shop with Vietnamese influence. I highly recommend! Very spacious area, great unique drinks and nice small treats- their croissant banh mi is a very smart idea. I really want to try their black sesame hojicha tea next time.

What a hidden gem in the northside Chinatown on Argyle! It took the wonderful Stir Friday Night's residency to bring me to enjoy their wonderful variety show (every other Friday night) at their new residency here. The venue is comfortably spacious, clean, organized and offers a delicious array of coffees, matcha, teas and I highly recommend the tasty delicate pork croissant banh mi. Highly encourage your patronage and support of Stir Friday Night, longest running Asian American comedy troupe for over 30 years, now led by the talented and devoted director, Jonathan Lee-Rey. Famous alumni include Steven Yuen, Danny Pudi, Suzy Nakamura and many others. Plenty of tables, lounge areas to relax and enjoy a bite and drink etc. Metered and valet parking available.

Came by for their Stir Friday Night Variety Show/Community Showcase which is outside their normal open hours. The evening we went they had a singer, 2 comedians, a local business, and some of the Stir Friday Night cast doing their thang. Haibayo was slinging the drinks and snacks including some drink specials. Jeremy C. had the Vietnamese iced coffee, I had the mango sticky rice drink, and we shared the croissant banh mi which I might actually enjoy more than an actual banh mi?? Is that even possible?? The vibes in the cafe/community space are so cool, one of the most unique spots I've been to in a while. All around an entertaining evening in a really neat spot with unique and tasty food and drinks. They're currently hosting these events every 2 weeks, be sure to check out Stir Friday Night's website to book tickets! But really also just stop by to visit this place during their actual open hours during the day because it's so chill and cool.

A really cool addition to the neighborhood. The place is bright and vibrant with plenty of seating and outlets. The coffee shop is all the way in the back and it looks like there is a small patio. The only downside is it opens at 8:00am, so if you have to go to the loop or log on by 8:30am then you might not be able to get a drink before hand. I went with the Cà Phê Sữa which was pretty tasty.

Loved the nostalgic design of this coffee shop. As a Chinese person, I genuinely had a little "wow" moment when walking through that smaller doorway into the order area - it felt familiar in the best way. The baristas were super friendly, and I especially liked the small board showing photos of their specialty drinks and each barista's personal favorite. I ordered the Mekong Citrus and a Chai Thai Tea with cheese cream on top. Both were excellent. The Thai tea is definitely a calorie bomb, but it's worth it - so good! I also enjoyed browsing the little Asian-themed plant shop next door, filled with books, candles, cups, and other small goodies. We'll definitely be back.

This new cafe is everything to me. Bright and vibrant inside, the cafe drinks match to a T. The orange (Orange Amber) and lemon (Mekong Citrus) drinks are light and citrusy, not a typical espresso drink you'd find at other coffee shops. BUT it is infinitely delicious and you NEED TO come here. The Bahn mi on a croissant was the show stopper. Buttery and spicy. In love. Can't wait to see what this space does. I love it. Good job folks!!

Super cute spot with great coffee drinks and delicious bahn mi croissants. The counter is all the way in the back so you go through lots of tables and seating areas first. Service is friendly and the menu is interesting and well executed. I missed out on the popup that was hosted earlier that day, but my drink and croissant were delicious so I'll be back soon :)

A ridiculously beautiful and spacious (yet cozy) spot, my only complaint is that there are already a couple of fantastic cafes within the same 2 block area and hate to see them have to compete. Haibayo is one of my favorite cafe experiences in all of Chicago, with a good drink selection and a decent banh mi croissant. Since it coexists with a community center, the seating is plentiful and varied but often fills up with how deservedly popular the cafe is. Wonderful place to do work or to get coffee after a meal of pho on Argyle

This is such a wonderful cafe that truly celebrates Argyle's history and culture! I came here to work remotely for a day, and there was plenty of space and outlets available. The decor was stunning, and I loved how it recognizes the creation of Argyle and the history of Vietnamese immigrants who came to Chicago. The workers were very helpful in providing drink options. I loved my coffee drink - it was fresh and had a great coconut flavor. It's also connected to the charming plant shop Qideyas, so you really get it all with this spot. Will definitely be a new go-to spot for me!

The americano was nothing special but refreshing on a summer day. The seasonal strawberry matcha was a bit disappointing, due to the lack of matcha flavor (the color was not very vibrant, and the matcha powder itself was likely not super high quality or oxidized) and sweetness. However, I tried the strawberry corn cookie, and it was one of the most delicious cookies I've had. Corn in dessert has been one of my favorites, and the texture of the corn with the strawberry icing to make a sweet and slightly tart summer treat was incredible! Everyone working there was super kind, and if I had more time to hang around, I would definitely bring a laptop and work here.

We were lucky to grab the last small round table for two.  The pastry case was only 40% stocked at this point. We were happy that they still had our favorites -- 2 almond croissants ($14 for 2) and a cappuccino ($5 + $0.50 Oat Milk) to go.  The cashier was very friendly, patient, and welcoming. The decor of the store is modern and charming.  There were a variety of seating options, and many customers were working on their laptops while enjoying their drinks, giving the café a cozy yet lively atmosphere. The bookstore occupies about half of the space and features an impressive collection of books focused on drama and theatre.  If you are interested in theatre, this thoughtfully curated bookstore is for you. We noticed a sign indicating that The Understudy partners with Defloured Bakery, which also partners with a long list of businesses, including another coffee shop in the neighborhood that we frequent a lot. We have enjoyed almond croissants and other baked goods at that café very often, they were just as delicious and large, since they were sourced from the same bakery. However, The Understudy charged $7 for an almond croissant, while the other café charged only $4.50 for the exact same pastry. That's a significant price difference. The cappuccino was another slight disappointment. It was only lukewarm rather than hot, although I am not sure whether the oat milk substitution may have affected the temperature. Judging by how popular The Understudy was during our visit, it's clear that many people appreciate its ambiance, curated bookstore, and friendly service. If those qualities are important to you, you may find the higher prices well worth it.

The shop in the back is cool and has a nice variety of clothes, jewelry, books, and gifts. Lots of travel items to match the theme of the cafe. The desserts are homemade and so impressive! The pear Bundt cake was really moist and flavorful. I loved the peanut butter and chocolate pie that was vegan and gluten free and awesome. So delicious! The milkshakes are amazing! I had a boozy one and it was so smooth and easy to drink. They also have good cocktails. I enjoyed a margarita here. The coffees are fantastic! I loved my Thai iced coffee. The matchas are wonderful. I've had the matcha latte and the matcha freeze. I've loved everything I've had so far. Tasty bagels and eggs. The bagel and schmear hits the spot. Nice salads too. The pear and blue salad is delicious. The menu here is expansive and I look forward to coming back and trying new things. I definitely recommend coming here!

I've been here twice total now, and both times the food has been excellent. I didn't realize this place was pescatarian the first time. I picked the mister grecco panini for the artichoke hearts: It was a little salty due to the olives, but it wasn't overwhelming. I really enjoyed the fresh side salad especially the honey mustard dressing. I would order this again, but there's so many other menu items I want to try too.

I figured the limited hours had something to do with the menu. Now that you all have gotten rid of the DJ table and added more chairs, it does feel more like a standard cafe! I'm looking forward to the menu changes. Thanks for your consideration! Previous review: I really enjoy their beverages and I keep coming back. That being said, there is almost no price transparency. The only prices they have on their menu are for the THC additions. I've mentioned this to the owner twice (he's a cool guy) but he has always sort of shrugged it off. It bothers me every time I'm in. Sometimes my latte with oat milk comes out different prices. Price transparency is so important for consistency . Not including the prices is a bit elitist, especially when the average drink is $6-$8. You should want folks to come in and comfortably order what they can afford. I hope this suggestion is taken into consideration. The drinks are good and like I said, I keep coming back but this has been a sticking point for me for a year plus.
