I love books and I love coffee so this seemed like the perfect place. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have skim milk but my cappuccino was very good. It was very popular place to be as many people were there. The bookstore part is a mostly curated collection of fiction, poetry and plays. Visited this coffee shop/bookstore on a recent trip to Chicago and thought it was really cute! We only popped in for a quick coffee but I enjoyed the ambiance and browsing the books. I ordered one of the seasonal specialties the "purple summer". It was an iced ube latte with coconut milk and I opted to add a shot of espresso to cut the sweetness a bit, as recommended. It was good! The ube and espresso combo tasted almost like mocha - it was a rich, sweet flavor. The color was pretty too. The wait wasn't long either with service being quick and friendly. This is such a cute space, pretty big inside and the book selection is great. As you can imagine they have a lot of playwright books. Several versions of Hamlet, guides to the great comet of 1812, incredible selection. The coffee shop is great too, although folks said online they had a breakfast sandwich, this is not true anymore. We came here on a Saturday morning around 10am and we were able to get a seat for three. I got a butte croissant, my child got a chocolate chip zucchini bread, and my partner got the savory cornmeal danish, it has sun dried tomatoes on top. The space is so pretty and inviting. Exposed bricks, lots of books, natural lighting and big cozy chairs, The Understudy has all the fixings for a perfect coffee shop. I love coffee, I drink coffee before I drink water so I'd like to think that I have a decent grasp on it. I've been to the understudy about 3-4 times. The first time, I had the pumpkin cold brew and it was great. The second third and so on times, it was a miss for me. The coffee tasted watered down and I even tried another speciality this time. You can enjoy some sunlight in the front of the store or go to the back and get a bit more cozy. The drinks are well done - I enjoyed their cold brew and although their pastries are from local bakeries, they have a wide option of unique vendors. I appreciate that they put the allergens that are included in the pastry on the display. I got the butter croissant and it was fresh and fluffy. We also got a pecan bar that was delicious. A very cool coffee shop with a small bookstore attached. The barista was friendly and the menu had some unique seasonal options. I enjoyed the coffee but wouldn't say it's the best in the city. I don't live in Chicago, but I visit pretty often- 1-2 times a year. On my last visit a couple of months ago, I finally took a long walk and ended up at this place. It is such a cute, cozy and pleasant coffee shop; lovely atmosphere and aesthetics. Kind service and clean environment. One side is the coffee shop, with ample seating. The other side is the bookshop, with more seating and a wide selection of books. I could spend hours here reading, people watching, etc. The only reason I knocked a star off was because the coffee just wasn't good, I'm sorry to say. This is gonna be a split review for the book store and the coffee shop aspect. The book store is larger than you'd expect to be paired with another business, and the aesthetic of the place is really nice. I don't feel like the books they have are terribly diverse as far as genres go: they mostly seem to be queer or race related, which is fine to offer obviously but they just don't devote much shelf space to other types of books. Maybe that's to be expected in a gay neighborhood though. The coffee aspect has been okay. The first drink I tried was a little too sweet but had great flavor otherwise. My second drink had fairly bitter espresso and was a little more disappointing. It's a bit pricey ($7 for a 12oz latte), and they don't have a ton of good specialty lattes and I'm not overwhelmed by the flavor options for their drinks. read more

I have been waiting for The Understudy to open for months, and was excited when they announced on Instagram that they were ready for the big day! I didn't make it to the grand opening but came in a few weeks later. The decor in the shop is gorgeous, and I love that an owl seems to be their mascot; I have a bit of an affinity for owls myself. There's street parking only around here, so plan accordingly. This store's niche is that it focuses on plays and theatre. While they did have a section with a few books that aren't plays, or dramatic analysis or the like, most of what you'll find here is the latter. It's the brainchild of a couple of DePaul Theatre graduates, and it's just a really cool idea. In the bookstore section, toward the back, there were a bunch of folks and lively discussion taking place when I was there wandering around. I'm not sure if it was a bunch of friends or if it was some sort of impromptu gathering, but I like the community feel that it lent the place. I can't wait to see what sort of events they might end up hosting here. The cafe takes up about half of the shop. They don't have an extensive menu, but they do have interesting specials in addition to their standards. They have some delicious looking pastries if you get here in time; I snagged a cheese danish that was yummy. My chai latte was good, but less sweet than what is served at the other coffee shops that I've gone to. It wasn't bad, and while I can't say it was my favorite chai I also would not hesitate to get it from here again next time I stop in. I love the vibe here, and will be back. read more

Like many of the newer businesses in the area they invested a lot in their decor. The inside reminds me of what I would expect to see at a cafe in Wicker Park; mixed match furniture, plants, random wallpaper, and upbeat music. The staff is unbelievably friendly. Whenever you enter the shop someone is going to greet you with a smile. The energy from the staff is infectious. They have only been open for a few weeks and I already observed them acknowledging the regulars by name and having small talk. The inside of the shop is on the louder side. They have trendy music playing and it is always bustling with people. If you want to score one of the prime tables you have to get here early. They have ample sitting but a lot of the sitting is at high tops. They don't have a lot of plugs available so if you want access to one of the few you have to get here early. I tired the quiche and iced mocha. I loved both of them. The quiche was a nice size for the price that you pay. I got a solid meal from it without feeling like it was too much or too little. The quiche was more solid which I loved because I've experienced quiches that are too soft in the center. The iced mocha was nicely made. It was a little more of the chocolate side but not too overpowering. I could easily see myself coming back here if I want a cafe with a vibe. We are very excited about this new coffee shop/theater themed bookstore in our Andersonville neighborhood. The coffee shop utilizes Metric coffee, which is always a solid choice. For my first visit, I did a black house coffee to stay, and it was solid. Plus the to-stay mugs are adorable. The menu is simple and straightforward with some exciting seasonal drinks to jazz things up. Prices are very reasonable for the area. Refills on to-stay mugs are one dollar. It also appears that they have pastries! I cannot wait to try them in the future! There is ample seating throughout the store for folks to work. The only thing to note is that the tables themselves are fairly small, so know that you won't have tons of room to spread out. But coming to read, work on your computer, or catch up with a friend is perfect for the seating layout. The seating is also cozy, warm, and spread out. The store itself is wonderfully designed. I would divide it into three sections: (1) the chic coffee shop, (2) the beautifully rainbow color-coded theater themed bookstore, and (3) the main seating area + seating nooks throughout the store. I can already tell that I'll need to come back several times to notice all of the wonderfully thought out details in this store, and spend time looking through the books. I'm here doing school work at the moment, but I definitely want to return for a leisurely exploration. Finally, the staff are warm and welcoming as they help all of us get acclimated to the store. Pros: - Solid drinks (not unbelievable, but they were good. Checked all the boxes). - Nice space. Large, with a fair amount of seating. - Nice music - Lots of natural light - Friendly staff - Cool bookstore attached - Open late for a café (6pm!) Cons/neutral: - Music could be considered slightly loud (it did not bother me). They also played albums all the way through, so if you don't like the artist, maybe you won't like the music. - Limited table seating. They have little side tables that people used to prop up their laptop and things, but they only have a few substantial tables. First come first serve. - Not cheap. A matcha was $6, with $0.50 upcharge for non-dairy milk. This is about middle of the road in my opinion. Not a crazy price, but not cheap - I was told that the cinnamon was not evenly distributed in the chai latte, so you may not get much cinnamon taste until you're at the bottom. All in all, this is a good place to get a drink and get cozy. Be warned: there is a fair amount of traffic on the weekends, so you may not have your first pick for seating. read more
