I can't say enough good things about this salon. In all the years I've been coming here they've never let me down, but my last visit deserves special mention. This time I made an appointment for roots touch-up and curly cut with Gabby and she really had her work cut out for her, let me explain: I'm really a regular at Hair Ambition but curiosity got the best of me and several weeks before I'd decided to try what I considered a reputable salon in Montclair, well known for color only. After the wash I was led to a self-drying station fully equipped with products and drying & styling tools. So far so good...NO!! As I combed my hair CHUNKS were falling out. To say I was devastated isn't enough, but I digress, this is a review for Hair Ambition. Fast forward, I explained all this to Gabby, she really heard me and I appreciate that She's truly a skilled professional and she worked her magic and fixed my hair. I left feeling great and confident that my hair is on its way back to healthy and normal. The color was spot on as usual and the curls were beautiful considering the damage from the previous salon. I just moved to the area from another state and was in need of a trim. I read a lot of reviews online and decided to check out Hair Ambition. I asked for a trim, refreshed long layers, and refreshed longer length face frame. While the staff was very nice and I generally enjoyed the customer service experience, this was probably the worst haircut I've ever received (and I had some bad Great Clips haircuts as a kid). The layers were super choppy, very short, and not blended at all. The only thing I requested was that my hair still reach back into a low claw clip and it no longer does (I have to use Bobby pins to keep it back). While that is manageable, the thing I can't get past is the awful face frame.... As shown in the pictures, it wasn't actually angled the right direction on either side and just has a chunk missing where it should gradually fade into the length of the rest of my hair. These pieces also won't even stay tucked behind my ears. I'm not one for bad reviews, but felt the need to write one as this was the worst haircut I've ever received and it's going to take awhile to grow it out to a point of fixing it. read more

I took some time before finally deciding to write this review. the pure Devastation and depression I have felt over the past couple of weeks I could not simply let this go without writing about my experience. It is my intention that this will change the way that stylist LISTEN to their customers and perhaps seek additional training and education if they claim to be expertise in an area. I have naturally curly hair, after doing Hours of research to find a shop who specializes in styling and caring for curly hair I settled for this shop as they advertised they do "curly cuts" and "the service provided assists in MAINTAINING your LENGTH while enhancing the body, volume & shape of your hair! " WELL I can assure you that was not the service I received!!! Before booking my appointment I even inquired if their stylist had specialty training in cutting and styling curly hair I was assured the 3 stylist who who were certified had specialty training. On February 9 I visited this shop I wanted my hair to be trimmed so it could be healthy for my birthday trip I had coming up. The stylist Jessica first question to me was "Do you like length or shape? " I told the stylist "I like my length I Want to keep it long just trim and round out the bottom." Putting my trust into her I sat in the chair, relaxed, and she began. About 15 minutes in I happen to see her cut a piece and I said to "that looks like a lot of hair" she respond to me "oh really, no it's not I promise it's not" She proceeded on to do my hair and told me how beautiful and thick and long my hair was. Done lcutting", I went through the wash cycle, then the drying cycle and by the end when I looked in the mirror and I was speechless and mortified. Jessica completely chopped almost 5 inches of my hair off!!!!! I was so stunned I couldn't even say much. I told her it's a lot shorter than I wanted still too stunned, I paid, I left the shop, I sat in my car and this is when I really got a chance to look at my hair and I began to run my hands through it . I finally realized just HOW SHORT she had cut my hair when I went in for my hair to be trimmed and healthy! I was completely devastated. I went back into the shop they could all see clear on my face just how upset I was. The manager attempted her best to rectify the situation but there was no turning back at this point. My hair was gone. The manager refunded me and I left. Everyone knows how Impactful a woman's hair is to her. Everyone knows how important it is to Choose a good stylist to care for their hair. I trusted this woman to trim my hair that day and I was let down. One day before leaving for my trip and One week before my birthday!!! I now had the burden to figure out how to manage and deal with the ear length BOB she cut my hair into. For the past few weeks I have been depressed. every time I looked in the mirror I cried. I kept my hair in a bun my entire trip. I attempted to flat iron and straighten my hair to see what it look like. it is uneven and a complete mess straightened. I have to go get it cut even more so it can have an appropriate shape, and I am going to put braids which will be another expense. Some will say "it's still nice short" which is completely even more hurtful because I simply didn't ASK for my hair to be cut short. It wasn't what I wanted. It wasn't what I planned on dealing with. The fact is I WENT TO A PROFESSIONAL TO TRIM MY HAIR AND I LEFT WITH A MAJOR CHOP" Again I chose to give it 2 stars as My rating of this place is based off of my experience with the specific hairstylist who did my hair and not against the aesthetics, atmosphere or the management of the facility. I even respect that the manager took accountability in the situation and attempted to offer additional services to me in attempts to rectify the situation. I was greeted by Gabby who actually cut my hair. Check in was easy and painless. Minimal wait time , She was so attentive and patient When dealing with my hair nuances which are not easy to deal with As I have really long hair and warn everybody against giving me a chop job. She cut off just enough to keep my hair long but make it look healthy and beautiful, The way she styled it In just a few short minutes defines her artistry and professionalism! Amateur Hour, there was no misunderstanding! I made an appointment nearly a month ago for a cut and color. At that time, I was quoted $65 for the cut and $200 for the color (a balayage highlight and root smudge). I was extremely unhappy with the cut today, so Crystal, the owner, said she wouldn't charge me for it. However, they charged my card on file, $240. I knew there was a discrepancy from my original quote, but I had to get home to compare my receipt with the card where I made the initial notes. I was charged to blow dry my hair and clearly more for the color. What salon is wetting your hair after a chemical service and not drying it? And, the fact that it wasn't initially separated leads me to think it was an embedded fee that was separately added today to mitigate the shortfall. If true, that's dishonest. Crystal seemed to take responsibility for cutting about 4 inches off my hair, but then proceeded to absolve herself by characterizing my dissatisfaction as a "misunderstanding". (The hair was swept up immediately, yet all the brushes had previous clients' hair so it wasn't done because hygiene is such a top priority). Crystal never intended to follow my directive to preserve as much length as possible in the back since she only colored the parts she intended to keep. We discussed the length too many times for her to claim this was a misunderstanding. I even said that I could make another appointment if I later decided to go shorter. Even if I did ask her to cut 4 inches of hair, what she did left me no room to change my mind despite charging over $200 for the color, what a cheap thing to do. This woman kept cutting, never creating shape or movement, just eliminating length. Recounting all of these details has taken me from being extremely unhappy with the results to incensed! Who behaves this carelessly with someone's hair? their time? their money? I came in with bra-length hair and left with hair grazing my neck. Before beginning, I said that if there was a theme for today's service, it was that I wanted my hair to appear denser, get face-framing layers and create movement. She declined my offer to show her the reference picture one last time before she began cutting, replying "Nope, I got you".  My hair has no movement, looks less dense, the ends are frizzy, the look lacks a salon finish and the color looks orange with haphazard chunks rather than the natural sun-kissed appearance of an effective balayage. I've had my hair cut and bleached before and it has never looked so dull, and Crystal saying that lighter hair struggles to look healthy is an excuse and further proof that she was out of her depth with my hair type and should have declined the service rather than taking my money and leaving me with hair that I'll hate living with. My hair should have received some sort of moisture infusion or, deep conditioning to combat the dry, fried look if that's something she predicted. My hair looked better before she touched it and I could tell by the way she toiled, that she knew it didn't look good. I'm positively sick of going to establishments, with every reasonable expectation of getting professional results, only to find out the hard way that the person doesn't know what they're doing and wants to be congratulated for their effort! If you have the gall to charge a princely sum, you should be prepared to give me the service I've paid for and at the very least, sincerely admit when you've done the wrong thing. It would be a predictable trope to attempt to dismiss me as a client who's sensitive about my length in self-absolution, but I got almost nothing I requested. She actually asked me if I would wear extensions to which I replied, "Why would I do that after taking my time and money to cut my hair?" "I'm not used to wearing additional hair and if I ever did in the past, it was to recreate the hair density I always had, but if it's short, it's short". I feel like an asshole for trusting this place with my hair, such an important feature of how I present to the world. I hate everything about my hair at this moment. read more

My husband and I got married at a Crystal Springs/Minerals venue, so I booked Say I Do on Location through Hair Ambition for our hair/makeup needs. Their prices, including the cost for travel, are extremely fair considering the quality of their work. Crystal & Jess were the hair team & Kylie did everyone's makeup. The spa at the hotel had no availability, so in addition to me, my bridal party of 8 girls aged 15 & younger, my mom, my mother-in-law, & sister, they squeezed in a few guests without prior notice. Not only did they create the requested styles flawlessly, but they created a fun atmosphere and were extremely kind & patient with the varied requests. Crystal & Jess re-curled & styled our rambunctious flower girls' hair repeatedly, and Kylie reapplied makeup on each girl at least 3 times because they were trying to out-sparkle one another lol. Super easy system and had no issues even though I made an appointment only hours in advance. Shannon was my stylist and she was very friendly. She understood the look I was going for and checked with me several times to see how I wanted my hair to look. I appreciated her patience and attention. It came out to $30 for a blow-out + curls done with a curling iron, which is very reasonable. The salon itself was very bright and clean. Nice modern look. I went to make an appointment, but Erika, the woman in the front desk, told me that they charge for a "consultation" $25 that is deductible from the final price. I deny that, and said, "i dont wanna pay that but i want to do highlights and haircut", so another woman came in and explain what was convenient for my hair. So then i go again to the front desk and they charge me $25 for the consultation which i specifically deny before. So I paid and make an appointment. After I paid the consultation and arrange the day, they say they need a credit card to assure my appointment, and if i dont go that day, they will charge half of the price of everything. So I ask for them to tell me the final price of the service before i give her my card, and she started doubting and she wasnt pretty clear about the final price. I didnt like how she charged me either way for the consultation, and also she never said i needed a credit card before i even start talking to her. AND AFTER ALL THAT, she wasnt clear about the price. Imagine, you do all the service and then they say, "OH ITS EXTRA 40 FOR THIS THIS AND THIS" So i leave, and lost 25 in this hair salon and didnt do anything on my head. read more

I had a really pleasant haircut experience with Gabby! I wanted to keep my hair long but also get rid of the ends where my old highlights have gone really solid and take off some weight that was making my hair fall really flat. I have a nice new cut and a pretty blowout that has lasted me a few days now. They weren't pushy about product, and it was very reasonably priced -- $50 including a blowout. Everyone in the salon was really friendly and chatty so I was perfectly comfortable. I will likely return to have my highlights done soon! read more

Based on the multiple great reviews for this place I was reallllllly hoping I found my new favorite salon for color but it didn't turn out that way at all :( I even scheduled a consultation first to see if the ombre i was looking to do was feasible and Gabby reassured me it was. I took multiple pictures and my hair was in good condition because i made sure i didn't bleach or anything in a long time. Well...what i walked out with was no where near an ombre and nowhere near being blonde. Instead i had orange/brown colored highlights that had some ends looking gray/white!! Although Gaby was very polite and even offered to redo my hair, it was too late...i was horrified at what my hair looked like and refuse to go back ever! Mind you my hair is about an inch or two past my shoulders, not that long at all. I was initially quoted $175 but was lowered to $125 because i was upset. I really shouldn't have been charged for the color at all!! The only reason I was looking for a new salon was because my favorite salon is in Staten Island and i was hoping to find the same skilled stylists in Jersey but so far no luck! I already made my appt in Staten Island to get this mess corrected asap. Learned my lesson. Gabby was so nice, I feel bad leaving this review but i had to share my experience because the coloring skills here were nothing like the photos posted and people need to beware. Booked an appointment by phone (I believe you can actually book online through their website, awesome!) for a single process dye, haircut and blow out with ease. I also purchased the Yelp deal of $50 for $75. I'm so glad I came across this wonderful business on Yelp! Although I arrived 15 minutes before my scheduled appointment (5:00 instead of 5:15 on a Friday), my stylist Gaby was very accepting and willing to get me all set up and started on my hair experience. I explained to her what I was looking for as far as color and cut and sure enough I walked out fully satisfied. I have really long hair and my ends were kaput! She told me how much I should cut off but of course I told her I just couldn't do it. She assured me she wasn't a "chopper" and would preserve my length of hair. She gave me exactly what I wanted and brought my hair back to life! Gaby was friendly, funny and engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Hair Ambition. They also have a sweet Maltese pup by the name of Bella who stops by offering affection for dog-lovers like myself. In all I ended paying an additional $30 after my Yelp deal. I went about 3 weeks ago for a haircut which is advertised as $50-55 on their site. I was also curious about getting a touch up to balayage I had from a different stylist that moved away. My hair was cut unevenly, I had also asked for bangs and I had to direct the person at least 4 times to ask her not to do this weird side cut thing because I wanted even bangs to the point where I just gave up. In regards to the balayage question, she basically told me it was impossible for my hair to be lifted because it was dark which I know to not be true because I've got 2 balayages in the past year to cool tones of which I showed her pictures of and she was just in shock. In the end I was charged $65 for the haircut (which is MORE than was what advertised but I said whatever because of Covid) I even gave a $10 tip despite being overcharged and right when I was about to leave the woman then says oh I also need to charge you $25 for the "consultation." So basically I paid $95 for a mediocre haircut and to be told it's impossible to do what was already done to my hair. I am very very disappointed and was egregiously overcharged. I really liked this place. Was a little nervous about going to a new salon, but Jessica was wonderful. Price wise I think about the same as other places. It's a cute place and you can park on the street. Everyone was very nice. We also discussed highlights and they seemed very knowledgeable so I'll most likely schedule for some color in a month or so I think, but probably sooner since what we discussed looked so pretty - they really seemed to understand what I wanted. Crystal has been cutting my hair for years, so it was a no-brainer when she opened up her own hair salon that I would follow her. She always gives me the cut and color I ask for - I am never disappointed. The salon is conveniently located on Centre Street and parking is ample on the street. You can call and schedule an appointment or you can conveniently make on-line. I never have trouble getting an appointment for the same week and appointments always start on time. Gabby, one of the stylists in the salon, gives a mean head scrub and I look forward to that wash every time! Her hands are amazing! Services include cut, color, styling, smoothing treatments and spray tan (although I've never tried), keratin treatments, extensions and wedding-day 'dos. Everything is reasonably priced and I've never had any issue with the cost. For a cut and highlight, I think the most I've ever paid is $100 and that is fantastic. Especially when the results are amazing! I will never let another person cut my hair. Crystal is the absolute best! Conversation is always flowing and everyone is always so happy and welcoming. Went last week for the 1st time. Loved that I could make an appointment online! I was with Crystal for color/cut/blowout and hair extension consultation. She is so nice and very knowledgeable on color. I picked a color that was a bit outside my comfort zone but I wanted something different. She made me feel so confident that I would love it and she was exactly right! I have received so many compliments on the color! I returned today for my daughter to get a cut /blowout with Gabby and my daughter now loves it there too. I will be returning in 4 weeks for extensions and a color refresh!!
