I've been getting my hair done with Sue!! I'm a brunette with long and curly hair and always wanted to try something new but I was also scared of damaging my hair. I have a friend whose blonde hair looked so healthy and she recommended Sue to me. She's an expert with both brunettes and blonde. My friend and I have very different hair but we both look amazing and feel so healthy. Since my first session with her she always listened and payed attention to exactly what I was asking while also giving me her input and making sure that my hair's health is prioritized. I really couldn't recommend her more, I don't live here anymore and I still will only come to her to do my hair. She's so accommodating to my schedule and always has the most positive vibes. I've had my hair cut here twice so far and love it! The location is so beautiful as its inside an old Masons temple, so that is pretty cool. Both times the service was very friendly and they have strict requirements for Covid before entering. You must have your temperature checked and fill out a form stating that you have not been sick recently. Both times I had Mila cut my hair and felt that she did a nice job. She is thorough and makes sure I know what I would like before she cuts. I have had issues in the past where hairdressers cut a lot shorter than I wanted, but Mila did a wonderful job! My hair always looks great. I look forward to returning for my next haircut as the prices are comparable for the area if not cheaper than some of the other local salons. read more

Came here with a friend on a Friday afternoon for a massage. The building itself is very unique as it's a converted cathedral. The salon/hair cutting area is upstairs and the spa services are an elevator ride to the basement. I like that it's dark and has a lot of stone but it doesn't look old or dingy! They have a small changing area with lockers and a small lounge area to relax before and after your services. I scheduled a Swedish massage and a scalp massage. Cindi was my therapist and she was amazing. She was very communicative and asked questions to understand my needs but then stopped talking once the service began. Her technique was awesome and she's definitely in my top 5 of best massage therapists. I'd definitely come back for Cindi and to try their other services. read more

I used to visit Bangz to get my hair done by Keer-- not sure if she's at the salon anymore--she was great. What can say, this is a quality salon. They have the skill and talent, and they will get it done. My only criticism, and reason for 3 stars in the lack of diversity. If Keer wasn't doing my hair, there wasn't a stylist there who could manage my kinky curly fro. I remember going one time, thinking that I could get a simple blow out...but it was a struggle. They tried though. Moving on, I learned that the spa was A THING! Previously, I've gotten a pedicure and massages here. Each time, the service was great. Today, I met Karla for a last minute facial. If you're booking a last minute service, there's a 25% off perk. Check the website for the deal. The check in was swift. Karla thoroughly explained the Covid protocols and procedures, as well as each step of the facial. The service was about an hour and included extractions. Karla was calming and gave a great facial and upper body massage. She has a radiant spirit and will make sure you're feeling great. I would not recommend the hair salon (to my squad), but definitely visit for your spa services. read more

I have to say I'm totally impressed with the salon on many levels. Your stylist takes care of you from start to finish there are not a bunch of "helpers" that do the work. The Salon is comfortable spacious and pleasant to be in , you are not sitting on top of other clients and the music is nice and you can here yourself think. Well... I came here by seeing this place in a top spa in NJ in multiple blogs and sites. It was a deep tissue massage. The place is underground and small men's room and women's room. The massage room is a nice, good space. The check-in process is quick. I had a good experience but the only problem was because of not cleaning properly or sanitize the place I and my wife got a throat infection. Massage and oil was a good and nice quiet place. In total price a little bit more than what you get. I have been in other places in New York City and cheaper or the same but get a better offer. Decided to visit this salon because of the DevaCurl certified stylists. In hindsight, I'm realizing DevaCurl certified apparently means squat unless you have loose curls (I have pretty tight curls). When I walked in, there appeared to be some drama over who would cut my hair. The receptionist brought one of the stylists into the lobby and she said that the barber would be "better suited" to shape and cut my hair. The haircut turned out to be uneven and on top of feeling like this place hires stylists who are not comfortable with kinkier hair textures, the barber said I had "nappy roots". read more

I have friends who go to Bangz as regulars. I have also gone there once or twice in the past 10 years. This time, I went specifically to meet with Sue, a colorist with tons of experience and a great eye for color. Exactly the kind of expertise I was seeking. You see, I wanted to go from very brunette, ( w/ some dull hilights), to almost blonde/white. I had been asking my past colorists to help me achieve this but was ALWYS told it would RUIN my hair. So I kept getting color, each time getting various shades of caramel hilights, and at worse, sometimes, a shoe polish black was applied to my roots!! Anyhow, I digress. I DID meet with Sue and after a great thorough consultation, she set out to work on my hair, like it was her mission! I was so pleased with her hours of hard work!! Finally, on my way to achieving my hair goals!! I was very pleased with this result and plan to return to allow her to complete the process. It's been a year since I've discovered both Bangz and Darian. I have been faithfully coming here at least once a month ever since! Darian is amazing and always does a great job. She's the only stylist I've found that can actually get me to the perfect blonde. This salon is so big! They have a ton of stylists and even have a spa. The service is always good from all employees, whether it's the girls at the front or even employees answering phones. They recently got a new coffee maker, which actually makes really good cappuccino's. On weekends, they usually have some bakery goods available for the customers, too. They have a small parking lot to the left of the salon, which fills up quickly. If you don't get lucky here, parking can be a little frustrating. Other than that, absolutely no complaints about this salon. read more

I would give a 0 if I could. I literally downloaded Yelp to write this review. I got my hair cut and colored here. First of all, the color was fine. But I told her to go to my roots- she didn't. Now my hair looks like a zig zag on top and my roots are already coming in from getting my hair done a week ago. Then she cut my hair. I asked for curtain bangs and showed her a photo. She also said I needed a trim and I agreed, I watched her show me that she was gonna cut about 2 maybe 3 the most inches of hair. When she flips my hair to the front she cut off I would say 6-7. It was beyond short. She also just cut across my front pieces of hair to make "bangs". clearly she had no idea what she was doing. She was talking the entire time and probably wasn't even paying attention to what I was saying. I wish I could go back in time and not go to the salon. My hair is not ruined for months. I had to go get ANOTHER haircut and the lady was in shock for what a "professional" hair spa did. I will never give this place business again. It's trash. read more

I hadn't been to a salon to get my hairs did since I was 12 because I had a bad experience (I mean really bad), but Andy and Lee washed and dyed all that PTSD away. I can't say enough wonderful things about the place, so I'll just say that, from booking until blow, everyone else there, from Suzie and Nicole to Gina, was attentive and professional. Disclaimer: the parking situation in Montclair is CRAZY, you may need 20 minutes to find parking, if you can't find a spot in their lot. Usually, I have a few beers before I cut my own hair, but Andy and Lee took such good care of me I literally wound up keeping my eyes closed in anticipation of the final reveal, and this isn't the free mimosas talking! (I'm at work now, I was at Bangz yesterday) Andy took my "creepy-Chick-chic-concept-do" and did the crap out of it with aplomb and expertise. DO NOT let the "levels" on their website fool you, Andy is more like a level 4,056 stylist. I am a novice at getting pampered and was originally going to request a higher level stylist, but I would have been making a terrible mistake. Andy the Alchemist, cooked up chemistry not only in the foils, but also in my heart. Andy was so in synch with my inner beautician, and he really spent a lot of effort and time making sure we both liked my hair and the trajectory of our inimitable, and heretofore inextricably linked, hair journey. Lee was integral in the logistical aspects of what I really thought was going to be a couple of white clumps here and there, but turned out to be a mini-marathon of bleaching and balayage-ing Andy took the crayon drawing I had in my head, made it a living masterpiece and put it on my head. I'm very frustrated with the service at the front desk today. My facial with Jessica was amazing. She was very thorough and detailed. When I went upstairs to pay that was a different story. Darian, at the front desk, was extremely kind. However, when she couldn't locate my gift card, she asked Tyler for help. Tyler was extremely rude and hostile. Every time I asked a question, she said she had "all the information" with an attitude and didn't answer my question. I told her I didn't have an attitude with her and she goes "well I don't think I have an attitude with you right now so sorry if you think i do." That's not how you apologize to a customer. From the second she walked over she was rude and seemed to lack any customer service skills. This greatly differed from everyone else I came in contact with on this visit. It also ruined my zen and calm experience that had just finished having downstairs in the spa. The first woman who checked me in today was very nice and showed me downstairs to the spa. I just wish everyone at the front desk was as nice. The whole issue was that they said they couldn't locate my gift card and would not honor it today. They also told me they don't expire. I presented the physical copy and they couldn't locate any history of it in the system. Tyler continued to text a manager who wasn't on site but never asked the manager who was actually there for help. When I finally got help from the manager who was on site, Ann Marie, she was very nice. However she still said she couldn't find my gift card and that they would get back to me. So now I will be waiting for them to "check their old system" for my gift card and then they will credit me??? I patiently waited over 15 minutes and paid for extra parking just for them to not handle the issue. I'm not sure what to rate the service today. I would give Jessica five stars but I'm unsure about the end of my experience. read more

I have extremely coarse thick hair. As such, not every stylist is able to manage my mane. Usually it takes a couple visits to get it right. Jonny knew exactly what to do with my hair from the first time I became his client (over a year ago). I always appreciate his honesty and expertise when it comes to choosing a color and cut that works well for me. On my most recent appointment I had the pleasure of meeting Emilia (she was assisting Jonny). She was very kind and went above and beyond to make sure the whole experience was a comfortable one. In the past Gigi has helped and she was fantastic as well. Last but not least, Gladys the lady who takes your coat and provides the coffee, tea, water, fruit is incredibly pleasant. Kim is an absolutely amazing hair stylist, who takes it very seriously, to an artform, but without being pretentious, snobby, pompous or arrogant. Kim is a lovely, down-to-earth, artistic, creative, passionate, professional (as in, she has helped design and/or formulate new shampoos), and she is worth every penny! If Winona Ryder, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman, or on the opposite side of the spectrum, Bradley Cooper, Tom Cruise and/or Keanu Reeves got their hair(s) cut with Kim, I am confident, they would all be very impressed and satisfied! The love affair is over.... my original girl left and was replaced with someone who was very nice but we never were able to communicate when it came to color. By the time I had my last appointment the new girl had changed the original color so much that I hated it. Went in for a correction and it was even worse. All my highlights - covered up - all my gorgeous color replaced with something I could have had done at any $10 salon. My hair is now brittle and fried. Breakage all around my hairline and throughout my hair. In an effort to repair it, I called the manager who was very nice and was able to get me an comp appointment with the head of color - Stacey. On the day of my appointment, I was whisked upstairs to where all the top stylists/colorists work. I then met Stacey. apparently someone has been blowing smoke up Stacey's ass to make her feel as though she's justified in talking to customers the way she does. I was interrogated for 30 grueling minutes over my color. She drilled me with questions and when she didn't like my answer I actually felt uncomfortable I was then told over and over again how color works. How you can remove color - how you add color etc etc. I'm not a fucking moron. I know how color works. After the 30 minutes of her brazen personality I had had enough. I got up and left. I went to Vanity and was able to communicate to them the issue I had with my hair. It was obvious to them what happened to my hair, what went wrong, what was done and what should have been done. After 30 minutes there I left with a fix and I'm happy. read more

I have been to this spa before and had a nice experience. I believe the spa portion of the facility is really committed to high quality service, so that's why I feel bad about rating it low this time. I came this weekend and did the "sun glow" treatment with Tina, which was an absolute pleasure and I have no complaints. Like I said, the spa portion of the facility is a dream! Then I had a haircut from Pedro and a $20 conditioning treatment. I have never gotten a worse haircut than the one I got from Pedro. I showed up and he had me sit down in his chair. He asked what I wanted to do, and I told him I wanted to keep it long but remove about an inch of the dead ends. I said, "I don't really know what to do with the layering." To which he said, "We'll play around with the layers. Do you like short layers?" I said, "No." I didn't waffle on that. I definitely only said "no." So he cuts my hair and checks with me on the length of the longest layer. I agree that it's ok, but i didn't realize how much shorter the short layers were going to get. As he is finishing up on my cut, the last thing he says about it is, "Your hair is really...coarse." Usually, the end of the cut is the time when my stylist will say, "I really liked working with your hair" or "It must be interesting having such thick hair." or "Wow, your hair looks great!" But no, I got a negative comment right before the reveal. I asked, "Didn't the deep conditioning treatment I paid for do anything?" "Uhhh, it must have done something..." Thanks for making me feel like a sucker for buying the $20 add on. I will never do that again. When I saw my hair, I was appalled at how short one of the layers were. He had dried it with some curl to it, per my request, so it looked even shorter than it was. I have since washed and dried it out to get a good look at the layers, and they are extremely uneven and there is no doubt they are very poorly done. I'm going to post pictures here to show how bad it looks. There is no denying it, the layers are all over the place. I feel like Rachel from Friends in 1997. But her cut actually was cute. He asked me how it looked, and I told him it was "good," but that wasn't true. I was in a hurry to get to lunch with my fiancé (and Pedro had misinformed me how long the cut would take), so I had to run. When the woman at the front desk asked me how I liked my cut, I told her, "It's ok, I guess. The layers are shorter than I had hoped for." And then I told her the thing about the deep conditioning treatment and how, based on Pedro's comments, I felt like I had wasted my money. The woman at the desk did not address my comments on the length at all. She mentioned the conditioning treatment, but nothing she said made me feel good about having purchased it. I am still reeling from the uneven haircut. I'll be in touch with Bangz soon. EDIT: The manager reached out to me based on the review and was really polite and offered to fix it up, free of charge. I declined because I had already gone to someone else for some additional shaping and to be honest, all I can do now is wait for it to grow out. I appreciated the outreach. read more

Not only disappointed, I feel ripped off and taken for a ride! Let me preface by saying I showed up with a camera and specifically told both the colorist and the stylist that I was doing a YouTube review. One would think it would alert them not to screw up, right? So here is my review. Loud environment. You are drowned in chatter the minute you walk in and it does not stop. This was the opposite of a relaxing experience. They have more staff walking around doing absolutely nothing than actually working staff. Sure they give you whatever drink you want and provide pastries and rounds of samples. So does Trader Joe's. Big deal! Sue did my color. I ended up with noticeable dye stains on my cheeks and all along my hair line. My skin is very fair, it looks like I did the job myself while drunk and it will take a week to fade . The stylist had to try to remove them. No apology offered. The color single process was nothing like I asked for. I requested a dark brown with burgundy undertones, I ended up with a brownish orange that literally zizzled my hair to a crisp. On day one you can't tell because they lather you in styling products. But just you wait when you wash your hair the following day. BrilloPad alert! Instead of looking natural it looks like a bad at home coloring job that stayed on too long before washing. Then Michele cut my hair. We agreed on a layered curly bob. Supposedly she is certified Diva curls. Fine. But I also came with a picture of what i wanted. The back was supposed to be an inverted slant since i specifically stated i needed volume in the back and on the top and I DID NOT WANT A ONE LENGTH BOB - I don't want to look like a cocker spaniel. I also specifically stated i did not want the front to be one length because it makes my face heavy (that's the cocker spaniel part). i also asked for my natural curls to be barreled/hot curler for styling. Did she do what I asked for? Absolutely not. I have one length from front to back and no barrel used. Instead she pinned my hair and used the diffuser creating curls so separated that all I can see is my thinning, very white scalp. I left the salon looking like a wet poodle coming out of Petco . She put so much product in my hair, I can't even brush it, it's a tangled mess! The following day I had obvious cocker spaniel sides, and I specifically told her I don't want the "cocker spaniel" look! I ended up recutting my hair - myself - to remove the dog ears and get what I asked for, no length on the side, I want to see my ears. The total for my terrible color and terrible looking cut was $225 and that was not even the highest package offered. And I left them each $10 tip, sucker that I am. So for a total of $245 I got a horrible brassy color that ruined my hair and a bad haircut I ended up fixing myself. This place is a RIP off sucking on the money of the typical stay at home, bored beyond tears wives who need to socialize and be catered to while feeling fancy and privileged. They go to the salon all the time, they can take a mediocre cut for a week as next week they'll get something else. But the rest of us who only go to salons once in a while, a botched color and cut mean weeks to months of misery. I have had better color and style at JC Penney from Maria who does not speak a word of English. This was bullshit. Ps. The brownies were undercooked. read more

Headed out to Montclair for a special event, I needed a blow out or hell, I could always use a hair cut. So, I took to Yelp to find a great new local gem. I passed by Bangz before and I knew it was in this old Masonic Temple, that was intriguing point #1. M good friend Rachel also repped them hard and her hair always looks good, so they had that going for them. The solidly good reviews on Yelp? Nail in the Halloween's today coffin. I ended up with a super last minute appointment with Morgan. I was welcomed with a smile and some tea and we sat down and talked shop. I'm easy, breezy so she confirmed how much I wanted off so she didn't get too scissor happy and I went for my wash. Great wash. Onto my cut. Morgan was awesome. Easy to talk to, really sweet and she really took time with my hair, which I appreciate since I have a lot of it. She layered, she shaped, she blew out, it was great. I really liked my blow out, but loved my cut. She did a great job getting rid of a lot of the weight on my rat's nest and it still looks great, if I do say so myself, with not a lot of styling at home, which is what I want in my life...always. Only con I found is that it's really not the most relaxing of salons. It's quite loud due to that the it's a huge, open space and sound carries and also that it seems perpetually busy. Nothing worth not visiting for, but just to note. Morgan was priced at about $65 which I thought was spot on. They've earned a return visit from me next time my hair needs a fixin'! read more

I am a long time customer getting services done in the Spa, approx 4-5 years. I have been going since I moved to NJ from FL. I love it here! The staff is very flexible and such a delight to come in. Particularly, Jessica Moran who is fabulous and a true professional in what she does! Always giving me advice on skin and nail care. Since the pandemic hit, Bangz salon & spa has taken the necessary steps to keep everyone safe and healthy. They have a questionnaire to fill out before your appt time asking if you have been exposed to Covid19 or are feeling ill, they also take your temperature when you are informed to come in as well as are greeted by someone so you know where you are going. There is no one in the waiting area/coffee bar, as it was closed for service due to pandemic. Everyone that works there is wearing a mask at all times. In terms of facials and pedicures, the staff members are always wearing a mask and mask/shield for a facial. Bangz has kept proper protocols during the Covid19 Pandemic and has made an effort to make me feel safe and comfortable coming in for a pedicure and facial. Thank you! read more

I would give this place a 4 for massages and facials- hands down they have amazing customer service and skilled consultants for body and face treatments. I had a heavenly prenatal massage here by Catherine. Then... Onto the bummer part- I just had a prenatal bliss package that comes with massage, spa mani and spa pedi with extra massage on arms and legs during mani and pedi. The mani/pedi was SUCH a disappointment. I'm only on day 2 and it's already chipping. The girl who did it was super sweet etc. but I think they gave me someone less experienced and wow she took ONE full hour for just the mani. I wish I had my massage last because it was so amazing and then I was tense again by the time I left because I kept wondering why she was moving at a snails pace on each nail- I love a nice relaxing mani and pedi but wow. I am not a regular at Bangz Salon and Wellness Spa. I was looking for a haircut and was recommended to the salon by a friend. Making an appointment was fairly easy. They have a unique scheduling system. Their stylists are tiered and their "level" is based on experience, skill level, and certifications. They higher the level, the higher the expectation as well as price. I chose a level 3 stylist, Shayna (spelling?). My cut and blow dry was $75 which is about what I pay at my regular salon. The facility is gorgeous as it is a renovated church. They run the salon like a factory. My appointment was at 4:45 which is when it began and I was out of there in 45 minutes, exactly how long I was told my appointment would be. I was very impressed by the punctuality and time on task of the whole facility. Again, I felt like I was an item on an assembly line in a factory. Now for my service. Wow. Shayna deserves 5 stars. My cut was modern, conservative as she didn't get scissor happy, and the blow out was amazing!!! The reason for 4 stars was not because of my service, I was just a little uncomfortable with the expediting system. However, if I lived closer to Montclair I would be a regular! read more

I went here for hair & makeup for my sister's wedding in November. Because we were for a wedding, they had the bride's, bridesmaids', and my names printed on a VIP list just inside the front door! Very cool! But there was something I didn't like about my full name being broadcast without my permission in a very public place (yes, I know I'm on social media, but still.). Service is very courteous; they lead you from the "waiting area" to the big, open salon space. It really does feel like a VIP treatment! The ONE problem I had: My hair stylist gave me a little bit of trouble at first because my hair was still damp from my shower when I arrived at the salon. She also thought that I hadn't washed my hair well enough because it felt "greasy" to her. Her doubt in my own haircare was a little insulting. She was also being a bit pessimistic, saying that she might have to "wash my hair and blowdry it ALL over again," simply because it was "damp" and "greasy." Keep in mind this whole exchange was very polite and smiley, and I was apologizing profusely, but I could sense her internal annoyance and I felt really guilty. Lesson learned, when they say come with DRY hair, they mean DRY. But she didn't have to rewash my hair at all, as I predicted, because my hair was air-drying rapidly like it always does. She curled my hair and gave me an up-do pretty much exactly like the pictures I showed; I was impressed. It took about an hour and ten minutes. The whole time, she, my sister and I chatted about everything, and by the end of the appointment the whole earlier conflict was forgotten. My updo stayed perfectly intact until late that evening, after the party, when I took out all 60-something bobby pins. My sister and I waited in the very quiet spa waiting room for our makeup appointments. The waiting rooms are stocked with pastries! At least when I went! Too bad I got called to my appointment just as I was about to reach for one :( My makeup artist was more soft spoken but just as nice. We had good conversations as she worked. She was nice about giving me what I asked for, like when I told her I actually wanted lipstick instead of lip gloss. They were even nice enough to give me a small sample of my lipstick color so I could retouch later on! They don't usually do that for everybody, so I felt special! I truly loved my look. It was so vintage; I felt like a movie star. You pay at the end, at the front desk. You pay the general fee to the people behind the desk, and then you get a small envelope on which you will write your stylist's name. You'll put your tips in these. It's a very good system that saves you the awkwardness of having to pay your stylist directly, and the anonymity of the tipping takes all the pressure off. It's a shame I live so far away, because I wish I could experience such luxury on a regular basis! I recommend. read more

Bangz does a great job of managing Covid protocols and offers great service and amazing hair cuts and color!!!

I booked an appointment for a color correction to fix the damage from another salon and unfortunately my hair color looked even more orange after I left. I scheduled another appointment to fix the color and still no luck. I then went back again and Zach told me there was nothing more he could do for me. I then called the manager to see if I could get my money refunded and she refused. Hundreds of dollars later and I still had orange hair. I ended up going to another salon to get it corrected and paid hundreds more. I would not recommend this salon to anyone. read more
