Avoid. I really wanted to like this place - but alas. I got a shampoo, cut and blow dry. Pros: Had booking available on the day Cons: Literally zero skills. - extremely rough shampooing - cut hair WAY shorter than I asked for. I had asked for a trim to take off the split ends and he halved the length. - blow drying skills are literally zero - I have better blow drying skills and I do not claim to be a hair dresser. He doesn't even know the basics like how to build volume at the crown of the head etc. I had to keep telling him but he is also the type to both not know anything, and also believe that he knows everything. Oy vey. I am going to rewash my hair now and re blow dry again for the event for which I got this done. -in all this, he kept pulling out a bunch of my hair because he was being so rough and not even trying to be a bit careful. I don't have a sensitive head, if you do - god help you. Children were running around and screaming and crying and jumping off of windows. Not the salon experience I am after for sure. No offer of water or courteous behavior, mostly just barked at to go from station to station. This guy clearly doesn't have his heart in what he is doing and should find another profession. I strongly recommend Yin Lin as your hair stylist specially if you need someone for a Japanese straightening perm. I can be extremely picky and its hard to find a good hair salon where you trust the scissors. She uses amazing hair products, very friendly staff, very good location. I normally don't pay more than $180 on my Japanese Straightening but it was worth it to spent $240 + haircut The place was clean, to me Yin is a Pro she cut and styles like magic, my hair is thick, wavy curly, long, coloured and dry with too much volume. Now I would recommend you to visit this place because they are excellent. After 4-5 hours later my hair looks amazing, soft, shiny. I'm looking forward to my new appointment. I came here to get my nails done, not my hair. The Shellac Manicure was being advertised for $30 dollars. Even though it's mostly a hair salon this review is for their nail service. The person attending me was really accommodating - she took off my old shellac without charge, and let me pick an accent nail with no fuss. She also spent time shaping them perfectly, and re-did one of my thumbs that had bubbled. It was detail oriented and clean (everything was sanitized). The only downside is that you can't see the TV from the station so it's a bit boring (they might want to flip the table) and there's only one person doing manicures so they can do solo trips but not outings with friends. Otherwise, it's good service at a great location (right near Yonge and Wellesley subway station). I would go back for another set of nails. NOT HAPPY!!!!!!!!!! Read review. Beware if you care for your hair. So I am a returning customer, I had my hair cut with Eric a couple of times before coming back for my most recent visit. Not pleased this time. I went in wanting to achieve a smokey grey/lilac from dark brown and a trim. Eric seemed very confident in his abilities and said he could do it in a day but it's gonna take some time. He also said he didn't want to touch my Virgin hair which was about 1/2 an inch of roots. I said that's fine as long as the colours blend and that he's confident he can do it! I especially didn't want a dark crown. He said I would need to bleach two times and then tone twice? Sounded fine. Anyway, fast forward 9.5 hours later and I was still there. They were closed for an hour and another lady was helping him finish. He had bleached my hair 3 times in one sitting because he removed it too soon the 2nd time. Regardless of the fact that my hair was completely fried, he absolutely did NOT achieve my desired colour. We toned 3 times. And I wasn't happy. The crown of my head looked absolutely ridiculous like I had feared. Oh and I still didn't get the trim. He told me to come back the next day and he will fix the colour I'll get a cut. I feel ridiculous because I left that night still paying full price and leaving a very nice tip, I was exhausted and needed to leave -$500 later. I go in a couple days later, I felt very uncomfortable because they made me feel bad for not liking the results I didn't ask for. He gave my baby lights on my crown in hopes to fix the mess, and then toned. He washed my hair and gave me a cut and when he blow dried my roots were RED! His response was confusion and giggles, "I don't know how that happened".... I left paying for the haircut lol he told me to come back the next day and that he would fix the colour. I still can't believe the fact they made me pay full price for everything. So unhappy. There are plenty of amazing salons around the city. This is not one. Save yourself!! I paid 200.00 for the picture I have uploaded of my hair. I had blonde highlights at the end and specifically asked to colour correct since I was going red brown, so I wouldn't end up with two different colours. He said I didn't need to because I was going darker. I now clearly have two different colours. My hair cut is the worst hair cut I've ever had and ever seen. It's to the point where my friends asked if I went to first choice. Maybe I should have considering I paid 4 times the amount they would charge and would probably get a better result. Please take a look at the picture I have attached to the page. I went in to ask for a refund as everything about this was terrible and embarrassing. They offered to fix it but it's beyond repair in regards to the cut and I can not trust them To touch my hair again for obvious reasons. They said they couldn't refund me because they didn't know how to explain it to "the boss" and because the hairdresser spent two hours doing my hair. When I asked for the boss they said the lady who was talking to me was the boss? Which was clearly not the case with the previous statement about "not knowing what to tell the boss." A refund would mean two hours of the hairdressers time wasted? Well I wasted 200.00 of my money and 2 hours of my time. I have to walk around with my hair like this now until my sister in London Ontario can cut it all off. My sister is a hairdresser and when she saw this job done on my hair, she was so upset with how much I paid she emailed them herself and got no response. I came across Hair District on Yelp as I was looking for a new hair salon to go to downtown. After seeing all the positive reviews, I thought I would give Hair District a shot. I wanted to cut a decent length off (about 3 inches), as well as dye my hair a grey ombre. I would like to start off by saying that all the staff at Hair District are very attentive and polite (I went to the Wellesley location). I also did not have to endure the forced small talk that you experience in many hair salons. Yin was my stylist and she was very helpful in the process. I originally wanted my hair to be dyed a solid ombre (the bottom portion of hair would fade into a solid grey colour); however, she suggested I do a highlight ombre (the bottom of my hair would still have some strips of my original colour) as it would be more natural and less harsh looking. I completely agreed with this as soon as she brought it to my attention. Also, the assistant at the salon (a young Japanese man) who washed my hair was very nice and gave me an excellent head massage! I was at the salon for about 7 hours (I know, very long). However, I know my hair is naturally very dark, so it would take some time for the bleach to sink in. As for the actual hair cut, I really liked it. I was going for a long textured bob, which is exactly what I got. As for the actual colour, the grey was slightly more of a warm tone than what I wanted (I was aiming for a more cooler blue tone) and it was not as much of a gradual fade as I would have liked. However, I still think the colour turned out great, and I truly love my new hair! The total cost of the cut, bleach (x2), and final dye was a little north of $300. All in all, I recommend Hair District for anyone looking for a good hair cut and colour, with fantastic service, and at a moderate price! Will definitely be coming back! Yin is AMAZING. Let me start from the beginning. I have been coming to Hair District on and off for the past couple of years or so to get hair cuts. They are conveniently located along the Yonge Line and a 10 minute walk from my home. I have always been satisfied with my haircuts no matter who has done it. This time, I came in to get a botched balayage fixed. Last week, I made the misguided decision to get a chestnut balayage from the salon my mum goes to in the GTA (I was visiting my parents and thought, what could go wrong?!) The answer is, A LOT. The lady didn't really know what a balayage was and I ended up getting grotesque patchy HIGHLIGHTS which made me look like a washed out hollywood actress from the yesteryears. So when I came back downtown I immediately went to Yin at the Hair District to help fix my hair. I showed her a picture from google images to convey exactly what I wanted. She was not only able to fix the highlighted portion but she also fixed the tips of my hair and added toner to my hair (toner was free!). The end result was beautiful. Once they know what you want, they never forget! I really care about how my hair looks and I am quite specific and picky with what I want. In the past, I've experienced overly expensive and inconsistent coloring/highlights elsewhere. Completely waste of money and just frustrating too when you can't rely on the person with what you are going to look like @_@ Not here, not with Yin :D she's kinda of like your personal hair stylist because she knows and remembers exactly what she did for you and your preference all the time. Very happy to get good color whenever I'm out of the door and most impressively, always the color/tone that I want. There were a couple of places that I've heard good things and tried before but I am sticking with this. Very reasonable pricing and very consistent good result. read more

Very uneven haircut. Worst customer service. Unclean. Expensive considering the aforementioned.

First off, this is a 2.5 star review, but I've rounded up because the staff were super nice and genuine. Let's start with the positive. This is a nice-looking salon, very conveniently located to the Wellesley station area. The decor is calm and soothing. The staff were also quite warm and friendly. Bonus points there. I waked in without an appointment for my men's hair cut, which is $25 (and up I find out) according to their sign. The haircut starts with a washing session. They had a woman who was a little less friendly that did all the hair washing and sweeping, who took me to the hair washing station. This is the weirdest, least comfortable hair washing station I've ever been to. Now, if you're 6'6" tall, it might be sized just right, but I had to really struggle to keep my butt in the seat and my head in the sink. The woman who cut my hair was very nice. A fairly recent Chinese immigrant, who like many immigrants to Canada has a degree and some professional training (in her case hotel management) but ends up working something else. Well, here's where the problem is...I'm not sure that she actually has any official training in a salon. She didn't ask what I wanted done and just started cutting...super weird. I tried to explain what I wanted. She had the strangest technique of sort of snipping the ends wildly. It reminds me of what other stylists do to create texture, but that seemed to be the only technique in her arsenal. At first I wasn't too worried, but then she started looking really puzzled. It became quite clear she didn't really have a plan as she neared the front of my head. Maybe she's better at women than white men. In any case, the top front of my head looks like an over-textured mess and my bangs are not even at all. This is where I got a bit aggravated. The shampoo woman started to ask how much longer it was going to take....oh great, rush the confused woman cutting my hair. Anyway, I ended up on the "and up" part of $25 paying $35. This is why I probably won't be back. $35 is perfectly reasonable for a men's salon hair cut with a professionally trained stylist. it was very clear that the woman cutting my hair had little to no professional training, and that's just too expensive for this kind of cut. P.S. They were super adamant about trying to get me to pay in cash despite having a credit card machine. After telling me the price, they said they'd have to add tax if I paid on a card. Looks like they're keeping some of their business under the table. read more

I came here for a Japanese hair straightening treatment and Yin and her staff did a terrific job. I needed a same day appt because I'm from out of town and was going back to Michigan the following day and they were very accommodating. I arrived at 330 or so and was there until a little after 8. Yin and her team were very thorough and professional; straightening w a brush and iron as necessary during the process to make sure that the straightening turned out well as they applied the various chemicals. I waited 72 hours instead of 48 to wash my hair which may or may not have made a difference but I wanted to give my hair every opportunity to turn out well! Well it's been three weeks and I looooovvvve my hair! I do use an Aveda weekly damage repair leave-in about a couple of times a week due to the amount of processing. On the upside, I have hair that I don't have to blow dry and use a straightening iron on every day. Everyone who knows my 'before' wavy hair asks me about where and what I had done; it looks that good! :) In total I paid around 360 or so including the cost for a small trim (which at $55+ tax was a bit much in my opinion, so clarify costs beforehand). In any case, I will definitely return when I need my roots touched up and totally recommend HD and everyone who works there. :) I'm totally satisfied. read more

I decided to go here as a friend went to Hair District and the girl did a fantastic job! I called up on a whim one afternoon and was able to get an appointment straight away. I was about $30-$35 for my hair cut and I left feeling great. Excellent head massage while I got my hair washed. The stylist really listened to what I wanted and recommended a good length to suit my face. She was meticulous, yes it took almost 2 hours for my haircut, I managed to read 5 magazines in that time but honestly I cannot praise this place enough. I have paid $70-80 for a hair cut and left the salon feeling robbed and unhappy with my experience. The bed like chair at the wash basin...ugh bliss I could have fallen asleep. The staff are welcoming and friendly and had remembered the time before when I was with my friend. Once I find somewhere I like I will be a loyal customer! Next step is to get my coloring done here but I do not doubt for a minute that it will be perfect! read more

Hairstylist are professional and will make sure you're satisfied with the length of your hair they're also hospitable. Even if you didn't book some stylist will try to help you out I had a hair emergency before a date and they were the last salon in downtown open till 9pm at the time. They usually give a scalp massage when they wash your hair. Price is reasonable. I'm used to having softer, shiny hair after the salon but this one seems to need new hair tools for professional use. Used to go their regularly when I lived around the block. It was the only place that seemed to get my hair right, and understood what it needed. I always went to Yin, she was the best. She is there most of the time, even though she has a newborn baby. I liked how late they are open, I had a busy work schedule, but they were always open until 9pm so I could get it done whenever I had spare time. I probably went their 6 times in total, my hair always came out looking the way I wanted it. My favorite part of this salon was their scalp massage. It makes your brain feel revitalized, if that makes sense. One downside is that the haircut takes a long time. They wash your hair, trim and cut your hair carefully, wash your hair again and massage your scalp, then put the finishing touches on. All this takes a little over an hour for a men's haircut. It is worth it though, they are taking their time to make sure it looks right and its what you want. The only other downside at this salon is that its a bit pricey. At other salons I paid $15-20+tip, this one cost about $35+tip. You get what you pay for though! read more

This is the first time I have cut my hair anywhere in Toronto. I have recently moved here and I am very particular about my hair. I read a couple of reviews on yelp before going here. Well, what can I say. The stylist and staff have exceeded my expectations. My haircut was done by Richard. Nice guy to talk to. Gave me good suggestions for places to see in DT. I showed him a recent picture of me and told him I wanted my hair like that. He took his time and made sure he was being very thorough. He asked me at regular intervals if I wanted them any shorter and went ahead accordingly. There was a hair wash before and after the haircut by a lovely Bangladeshi lady. I, definitely, am satisfied with my first experience here. I hope their service continues as I will be visiting them from now on. All the staff greeted me on my way out too. I went to Hair District last minute to do a Japanese Hair Straightening Treatment. As this certain treatment usually lasts 4-5 hours, I was really impressed that they were able to do it the same day I came in! I first read the positive reviews on Yelp and I called in to ask if they did Japanese Hair Straigthtening often and the man on the phone was very nice, patient and answered all of my questions. He said that Yin does these treatments for her clients often, and is very experienced. My treatment came out looking great, and Yin was very professional, detail oriented and made appropriate converation (unlike those hairdressers who go on and and you become a prisoner of the chair). During my 4-5 hour treatment, I saw that they have a bunch of clientele (mostly male from what I could see)..and their haircuts ended up looking pretty good! Although it may be on the pricier side for a man's haircut...everyone ended up leaving pretty happy with what they received. For those asian people out there, Yin works well with asian hair and she speaks Cantonese, Mandarin and her english is pretty good. I would recommend this hair salon, especially for those girls looking to do the Shisheido Japanese Hair Straightening. The only negative point was that last time I came here for a haircut, they gave me an awesome head massage but I didn't get one this time! Not impressed at all. I went here for wash and style. I could have curled my hair better than what one of the stylists did for me. She didn't even try to do what I wanted. All I wanted was loose wavy curls with some volume. She not only did a bad job at curling my hair, but also flattened out the volume. I had also booked my eyebrow threading with them. But the woman told me she couldn't do my eyebrows because they were too busy. She told me this after I got done with my hair. Very poorly managed. Really disappointed in this place. read more

The lady took her time doing my haircut. I liked the result, but it was one of those haircuts that looks amazing when they are done and the next day wonder whta they did to you. There is no shape left. The hair was styled in the place so i guess thats why its like that. The guy on the phone was useless, he didnt seem to know what services theey offered. Its $35 for my boyfriend to cut his hair, I understand that is expensive. But i told him to give it a shot. He didnt like it as much as the barber shops he usually goes to.... said it wasnt done the same way. read more
