How have I been at Hofstra for 10+ years, and this is the first time I came here?! I heard from several students, colleagues, and my brother that the Hair Express salon was excellent, and that they've been going there for years - I'm so happy that I finally tried it out! I was in a bind and needed a haircut in two days because that was my only free day. I was nervous because I've heard that due to COVID, salons were taking weeks to make appointments. Hair Express was easily able to accommodate my short notice appointment request! **This is a professional salon! It's NOT run by students** Barbara was AMAZING! She took the time to get to know my hair care routine, asked where I parted it, last time it was cut, etc. She recommended I cut off 4 inches because my hair was super long and super dead at the end. She also recommended just a straight, blunt cut because I usually just straighten my hair, and it honestly looks so healthy and sleek now! This is located on the second floor of the student center at Hofstra University. I think the price is great for the quality you get. BONUS: They also do nails! COVID NOTE: Hair Express took all of the necessary precautions - Chairs/stations were distanced, cleaned in between use, and everyone had a mask on at all times. I'm very unhappy with the acrylic nails I had done here and feel I need to let others considering this place know. I really wanted to like this place because the nail stylist was nice and it's convenient for me as a Hofstra student, but unfortunately my experience was not good. * EDIT - I went to another nail salon today for a fill and the stylist was also appalled. She said it looks like a person in training did my nails. She pointed out that my nails were lifting even though they were a new set just two weeks ago * While I've only done acrylics twice in my life, I have been to plenty of nail salons and this one is definitely not great. There is no atmosphere - the pedicure station (which I didn't use) looked dirty and nothing like a normal salon's large chair+foot tub duo. This salon is one woman with a table and very few nail polish colors to choose from. I had a color in mind when I showed up and there were no colors even close to it. She doesn't do dip nails, either. The experience of getting my nails done was less than great. I showed up on time and the manicurist was not ready yet. She was finishing up with a client and had to take her lunch break (which I'm all for, but not on a client's time). She was on her phone half the time as well which I think distracted her because my nail shape was supposed to be square-oval and half of my nails ended up looking lopsided. They are also misshaped in a way that one pointer finger nail looks thick and unnatural and the other one looks much thinner. Everything about the nails were inconsistent. When I asked her to fix the shape of some she did but it wasn't doing much and I honestly don't want to have to be on the lookout for misshaped nails while I'm getting them done professionally for $50+. Also, my nails are lifting on some fingers now. All around it was a really sloppy job. I will never come back here, and I would not recommend this place to anyone for nails. read more

First off I'd like to start this review telling you about how badly I messed up my hair yesterday .. I used 3 different box dyes after stripping my hair of dark color. After being completely upset with how my hair turned out I gave up. I had some hot roots. They were bright yellow orange and they didn't blend in with the rest of my hair. My scalp was so tender and in pain. I called this salon and asked if they could squeeze me in cause my hair was terrible which they gladly did. And the receptionist was extremely nice too. The stylist I had was named Barbra she saved my hair!!! She checked my scalp before putting color on it to see if I had any sores or anything and I didn't. She was also gentle and checked on me multiple times. She did such a great job with my color I honestly wish I had taken a before photo to show how much better my hair looks and it feels healthy even though I abused it with products. Barbra cut my hair as well and styled it and I love it. I'm so happy with the results. I thought my hair was not going to get better after messing it up completely and Barbra saved it!!! I'm so happy with this place. I will definitely come back! I recommend this place for sure everyone was very nice and professional. read more

All the hair stylists are top notch and they can always color/cut my hair better than I imagine. Even the makeup artists are sweet, caring, and talented. Going to college means lots of studying and some partying and alot of times the exact reverse. Although at Hofstra University you need to make some time to make yourself look right with a high end haircut that rivals service from the high end boutique salons around long Island. The women who work here are talented beautiful and smart and will be able to create your style however you see fit. Joann has been cutting my hair for over 10 years and I don't know what kind of mess my hair would be without her. Heard great things so I came for highlights and turquoise dip dyed tips. The whole time I was there the staff kept trying to convince me to get turquoise extensions at $50 each instead. No thanks. It's the summer and my hair grows quickly, not to mention I asked for semi permanent which washes out in a month or two. I left with sopping wet hair and $300 broker. It wasn't till I got home and blew out my hair myself that I saw the nightmare. My whole head was bleach blonde white and the underneath section of my hair was navy blue. Huh? Pretty sure this is not what I asked for. I went back the next day and asked for it to be fixed. The stylists had an attitude and all they did was put a toner and wash the navy until it turned a lighter shade. Still not what I asked for and now my hair had an orange tone, yay! Thankfully it was the summer and little kids at camp don't care what their counselors hair looks like. Had it been the school year and at my full time job that would have been another story. Ever since I got my hair dyed for the first time I've been coming here. And even before, I got my hair cut and styled here and I have never been disappointed. Everyone is so nice and are always happy and ready to give you exactly what you're looking for. If you want a quote for any service, they'll tell you. If you want an estimate for how long an appointment will take, they'll give it to you straight. Hair, waxing, makeup, nails, they do it all. Yes, the pricing is expensive, but the service is always so worth it. And everyone who works there knows what they're doing and are all certified professionals. I get my long, curly hair dyed purple every time I go here and I have never left unsatisfied or felt ripped off. With frequent washes with the right products, the permanent dye they put in my hair only starts to fade after at least two months. Even at other salons that have used the same dye on my hair, it's washed right out after only a couple washes. Salon HX does it better than any place I've ever been to. And everything in there smells so good! It helps to be a Hofstra student/staff/faculty member because this salon is right on campus in the student center! When I'm not on campus I live an hour away, and I'm thinking of exclusively coming back here to get my hair done once I've graduated, the trek is so worth it! read more

Went there for 1st time after a recommendation from a coworker and Barbara did a terrific job ... I wanted highlights on my hair and they came out just the color I wanted.. Only reason I gave them 4 starts its because they charge me $25 more without me knowing or have any acknowledgement of it and and i left with soak hair and they didn't even comb my hair after finishing , they want $25 for blow drying my hair, which I said NO...I paid $65 for half head of highlights, plus $25 for blending color(that I didn't know they will do and charge me) at least they should comb my hair or drying it with a towel,not let me go with wet hair... But I left happy with color of the highlights read more

I get my hair blown out here and my eyebrows done here all the time. They never disappoint and they're so nice to talk to! Love it here.

NEVER. Get your eye brows done here, they will be uneven, crooked, and practically gone.
