This is a review for the salon Hair as well as stylist Melissa Zola. For those with short attention spans I'll give the reader's digest version up front - Melissa is amazing and the shop is oozing with charm. Melissa has always been awesome and I love going to her to get my haircut. She's professional in every sense. She's not afraid to share her opinion or give you guidance. Her goal is to give you exactly what you want even if you need some help describing exactly what that is. At the same time she's extremely friendly which makes the experience that much better. As for details on the actual cuts - I'm a guy with short thick wavvy hair. Melissa gives me a short scissor cut (no chop shop all trimmers cut a-thank you) and uses some thinning sheers so my hair isn't as heavy. She takes the time to do things right and my cuts last a long time because of it. I've been going to Melissa for about 2 years now (she used to work at another salon close by) and have referred a few girl friends to her as well. They all got the cutest most flattering cuts I've seen on them. I do not hesitate to reccomend her whenever a friend is looking for suggestions on where to get their hair cut. The shop is cozy with room for two stylists. Last time I went in they were doing some renovations, but it looked promising. The best way I can describe it is that it feels like you're hanging out in someone's apartment who also happens to cut hair. Lucky review number 50! There isn't much to say other than how exceptional this salon is, specifically Melissa Zola, who was my stylist. I have been searching for a good place to get my hair cut in the city, and have extremely curly hair. Because of that, I have had my fair share of bad haircuts. Fortunately, I found Melissa. I went in with a few ideas of what I wanted, and brought them to Melissa. She was honest and told me what she thought would work, and what wouldn't, and we settled on what cut she would give me - and I couldn't be happier with it! She did an amazing job fixing the mess I had left over from the last haircut, and totally re-did my bangs. She cut my hair so that it looks awesome straight or curly, and it feels so much lighter and fuller. She also gave me great recommendations for hair products and styles. I am extrememly pleased! Melissa has been the most professional hair dresser who has ever touched my hair. Absolutely amazing. I have to recognize that it's a little bit pricey, I've never spent so much but it was absolutely worth it ($160 for full highlights + tip). She studied what I wanted to do with my hair and told me everything she would do before setting the appointment. It seems unfair for me to give this place one star considering I NEVER ACTUALLY got my haircut there! Believe me it is not because I didn't try. I called repeatedly! At first, I did not leave any messages thinking-I'll just try back later someone is BOUND to pick up the phone at SOME POINT right? Wrong. I still don't get it-am I supposed to leave a message with three dates and times and then she picks one and leaves me a message back confirming? I don't know about you but I rarely check my own voice mail? If you want an alternative to hiring a person to book appointments to keeps the cost of a haircut more affordable-I'm IN! This is a review for Melissa, quite overdue, but speaks to her range. In the past four years, my hair has gone from almost chin-length with bangs to beyond shoulder length without bangs, and Melissa has seen me through a subtle but tasteful transition. She never makes me feel bad for not coming on a regular basis even though I'm sure my hair is an unspeakable mess by the 2-3 month marker. When I start realizing that I have more bad hair days than good, I call, make an appt, and always can get in within a week despite the fact that my work schedule sucks. My hair is straight and thick, she always listens to what I want, and since I am not smart about knowing what looks good, is very helpful in giving advice. I also did color with her a few times (red for my brown hair) and I got compliments from strangers on it (I will get back to this habit when I get that raise). Conversation is always pleasant and interesting without being overbearing, and the shop is homey and intimate without being crowded. read more

Third salon I've been to since moving to NY. OK FOR REAL I hope I've finally found it this time. Kim rocks. She's super meticulous and really pays attention to the hair she's working on. She talked me through what she was thinking about doing with my hair as she could see I was sort of at a loss with what to do about it anymore. She had the right ideas and the cut took a while as she cut what felt like strand by strand. I can say, now that it's been a week, she totally got it. She got my hair, she got my look. I have no doubts it's going to grow out amazing as I'm finding it a little short now. But I know her cutting into it was just part of her PLAN to make it awesome. Today was my third cut by Melissa, and every time I have left, I have felt like this is my best haircut yet. I have thick curly hair which has always been a challenge for many stylists. But Melissa just knows what to do. And since I have been visiting her, all my friends have commented how my hair has never looked better. She also puts in really nice highlights that give my hair a natural sun-kissed look. And they are artfully applied so that when my hair grows out, I don't have garish roots showing. I cannot recommend enough! Melissa is courteous and thoughtful. And not overly chatty. She seems to really be focused on my hair. And good lord, it needs it! Oh, and I also enjoy the music they play. As all of the other 5-star reviews attest, Kim is awesome! I came in and asked for a haircut the way I do everywhere, and offered a few complaints about it's stubborn behavior. She made some suggestions that seemed counterintuitive to me (keeping things a little longer on top, thinning out some bulk), but my hair was a mess so I figured I had nothing to lose. I gave her carte blanche. 30 minutes later, I put on my glasses to take a look at the result. The cut was perfect--just the way I'd always hoped it would look after a cut, except every other time this hope had been followed by mild disappointment. Haircut was ok - atmosphere and service not so much. I got a trim from Kim, nothing special, but she did an ok job cleaning up a bob I'm growing out. I feel that overall it was lacking a bit of TLC - both the cut, the hair washing, and just the overall experience. A haircut is more than just a practical necessity. Its a feel good thing to do for oneself. Kim's Hair felt like an in and out and she couldn't have cared less about it. She also kept telling me I've got the wrong ideas about what I want for my hair or the wrong hair for those ideas or whatever. Price was borderline at $50. Usually before I move to a new city I get my hair cut by the person I've come to depend on for making me look like a reasonably respectable and contributing member of society. This is because the last few times that I took the leap of faith immediately upon arrival I was given whatever style was trendy with the dudes at the time, which I tend to completely abhor. From this I cannot hide, because my skull is absolutely enormous and I look funny in hats. In the name of science, and a complete and total lack of time, I decided to take a chance on Kim. I had shopped around a bit before I settled on Hair, and the other two places which were in walking distance and didn't involve a closet outfitted with a spinning chair and a patronly grandfather figure aching to give me the top mop of the 1950's just so happened to want way more money than I was willing to pay for a cut. Kim, on the other hand, is incredibly affordable -- in fact, the least I have paid for a proper styling in quite a few years and just as many cities. The setting of the place is cozy and intimate, tastefully decorated with a splash of eccentricity, and well-insulated against the throng of Manhattan Avenue. Kim's style is very abstract. Rather than going through the traditional stylistic motions of drawing lines about the scalp and rigidly hacking definitive layers, she shoots for the general length you're looking for whilst leaving herself some extra room for texturising, or as she refers to it: "The Coolness". As a fan of coolness at large, I informed her that she was officially my new haircut-giving-person, and will be booking an appointment at her shop well in advance the next time my hair is in need. Everything about Hair was a great experience. I've waited a couple days after my cut to see if I am still happy with it and I sure am. I have wavy hair that I am trying to grow out as well as bangs that I am growing out so this was a maintenance cut but she really made it so much easier to manage. Kim is great, and she gives genius hair! I had a former hair goddess, Katya, at Tomcats also in Greenpoint but she moved away and I haven't been able to get a decent haircut since. After reading the Yelps about Kim I made an appointment and now I'll be going back as long as she's still wielding scissors. I don't have a lot of hair left on top, which makes it difficult to cut. Kim listened to my concerns and gave a great cut which had legs- not too short, but it grew in well and didn't bozo out at the crown after two weeks. She's an absolute master and a very nice person. I am your average dude that hates finding a good place to get a haircut but alas I have found my perfect spot. Kim is easy-going, plays awesome music and is great to talk to. The first time I walked in she played with my hair a bit before washing it to determine how it grows and falls which I had never heard before but thought was pretty cool and after an hour my hair looked sweet. Kim is amazing and has given me the best cuts! I've been going here for almost a year and am happy I finally found a place to get a quality cut without having to pay a ridiculous amount of money. When I first came in, I was nervous about going from a chin-length hairstyle to a short pixie-like cut, but the style she gave me fits my face/hair type perfectly. Not a month goes by that I don't get compliments by complete strangers on my hair. I've referred quite a few friends to her who have also experience similar results. There are lots of haircutting places in greenpoint, but to me they all seem like either barber shops or salons for ladies. My regular stylist is in Manhattan and I've been going to him for years -- and paying $100 for a men's haircut. I meant to get a "haircut for the holidays" but of course that never happened. I've been passing by Hair for a couple of months -- it has a cute little storefront. When I saw pricing for men's haircuts starting at $25, how could I resist? So I decided to take a chance. My haircut was excellent -- a real salon cut with wash and dry. The space inside is charming and clean. The owner kim is friendly, down-to-earth and obviously loves what she does. Kim is great.. I've been to her twice now. She seems to understand my hair better than I do. The second time, she followed what I said I wanted, but the next morning I realized that the cut was a little rounder than I had meant. I had asked for that style, so I just assumed it was my bad. Just to see if there was anything she could do, i called Kim way too early the next morning and she told me to meet her there at 9:15. She immediately identified the problem, fixed it 123 and now it's one of the best haircuts I've ever had.
