Based on an appointment reminder text, I arrived at the salon for a 10:15 haircut. When I arrived I was told that my time slot was at 9:00 and the door was closed in my face. Later that day, the owner, Denise Pukas, called me at home and was extremely hostile. She told me that it wasn't Mahogany's responsibility to put down the correct time on the reminder text. Really? She took a few days to reply, but this was 90 days in advance for a Thursday wedding. No big deal. I walked in, and was immediately greeted and offered something to drink. Waited less than a minute for my stylist, Amelia, and we went to work. Showed her my hairstyle, and she set to work. She did *precisely* what I asked for, but I've never done that hairstyle before...and I hated it. Mini mental freakout, admitted I didn't like it, and she said, "No problem! We have TONS of time. Really. This happens all the time. Don't even worry about it." She redid my hair about two more times (total time spent on my hair was 45mins), and it was finally perfect. She said, "I'm doing something back here (on the back of my head) that you didn't ask for, but I think you'll like it. It's very "bridal"." She was right. My hair was perfect. Afterwards, she moved me to do my makeup. She gave me a granola bar and more water, reminding me I wouldn't be eating for hours, and we chatted about tons of stuff while she didn't my makeup. Both hair and makeup turned out beautifully, and I thanked her a million times for keeping me calm and staying flexible. I waited ten minutes for someone to greet me at my appointment time. Polish color selection, quality of manicure and pedicure products and expected amenities are lacking. Pedicure chairs are uncomfortable. Feet are soaked in plain, tepid water. Base coat and top coat products provided are off brand. Polish removal (gel) is not performed according to best practices (no gentle "soak off", rather polish is aggressively removed using a nail drill and aggressive stripper. After three cycles of mani/pedi services over several months, my originally healthy nails are thin and weak. Manicures are performed on bare, gritty tables with no towels upon which to rest one's hands and wrists. Nails are soaked in plain, barely warm water. (Most modern salons have discontinued this soaking process) the drill and aggressive filing are used to remove polish. Removal products, base and top coat, such as exist, are off-brand. Polish color selection is very limited. Technicians use torn paper towel pieces to cleanse and wipe nails -- no cotton wool or cosmetic squares. No beverages are offered, there is no massage or moisturizing finish offered. Much more like a strip mall "no appointment" salon, Tropical Spa, while located in an attractive building and apparently family owned cuts corners, is merchandised with off brand beauty supplies and cheap jewelry and accessories. Not much attention to quality or style. The impression, despite $100+ cost for a gel Mani/Pedi is of cheap products, abbreviated services and cost cutting. Not for me again.

I went to Mary Ellen 8 weeks prior & the demeanor was like night & day and she is the one who scheduled this July appointment.
