I have been to this salon three or four times. But I won't be going again. While the staff is friendly enough, their training and professional practices are not consistent with those in use at similar salons with similar pricing structure. I waited ten minutes for someone to greet me at my appointment time. Polish color selection, quality of manicure and pedicure products and expected amenities are lacking. Pedicure chairs are uncomfortable. Feet are soaked in plain, tepid water. Base coat and top coat products provided are off brand. Polish removal (gel) is not performed according to best practices (no gentle "soak off", rather polish is aggressively removed using a nail drill and aggressive stripper. After three cycles of mani/pedi services over several months, my originally healthy nails are thin and weak. Manicures are performed on bare, gritty tables with no towels upon which to rest one's hands and wrists. Nails are soaked in plain, barely warm water. (Most modern salons have discontinued this soaking process) the drill and aggressive filing are used to remove polish. Removal products, base and top coat, such as exist, are off-brand. Polish color selection is very limited. Technicians use torn paper towel pieces to cleanse and wipe nails -- no cotton wool or cosmetic squares. No beverages are offered, there is no massage or moisturizing finish offered. Much more like a strip mall "no appointment" salon, Tropical Spa, while located in an attractive building and apparently family owned cuts corners, is merchandised with off brand beauty supplies and cheap jewelry and accessories. Not much attention to quality or style. The impression, despite $100+ cost for a gel Mani/Pedi is of cheap products, abbreviated services and cost cutting. Not for me again. read more

I called and inquired about how long a mani-pedi without gel would take. I was told it would be 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. I made the appointment because I was on a tight schedule to attend a family function. There was also a notice online that said I was eligible for a 25% discount. I arrived on time, but no one was there to greet me. There was no friendly hello or welcoming smile. The aesthetician was late in providing my service and did not inform me that the appointment would be an hour and 45 minutes for no gel. No one communicated the fee, and I neglected to ask. The aesthetician did not seem very experienced; she was slow and awkward, and I although I appreciate the effort, it could have been more professional. After an hour of working on the pedi, we had 10 minutes left for a manicure. She worked slowly and barely cleaned my nails. When I went to pay, I imagined I would not be charged for the mani or at least be given a discount for the following: -false advertising, no discount was offered -inaccurate information regarding how long the appointment would take -incompletion of service. I did not get a manicure. And the price was more than NYC, it was $90. Absolutely ridiculous. TThe price was more than NYC 's--$90. It was absurd. What a difference 10 years makes! I made an appointment online for the "dip nails" service. I failed to indicate that I already had this kind of material on my nails and it needed to be removed. Kevin who helped me was gracious about my error and proceeded. When I was ready for the dipping part, the owner took over. She did a good job and was quick and efficient. Tropical Salon has the same problem so many businesses have, they are short of staff so getting an appointment was terrific. There are few places around this area that offer this specific type of service. (I did book several weeks in advance having learned my lesson a year earlier when I couldn't get an appointment anywhere. I come here seasonally.) Absolutely the WORST Customer Service of any salon I have ever been to in the entire USA. Rude, insulting bad service and very marginal in every service category. Do not waste your time or your money going here! They are terrible! I have been a regular customer for over a year now because they are close to me, but I will never go back after my last visit. I have been here a few times but also used other nail places. We got gels. They took the time to cut and trim my child's nails. Even cuticles. The color is cute and I had him do the ring finger a glitter color. He did many steps and when all done he massaged each hand and finger. Then even asked her a few questions and tried to get her to talk. She had a good time and glad they did an excellent job even if she is a kid. Also I liked how they ignored the phone calls and focusing on the clients. Instead or stopping and leaving to get the phone. Staff was rude and made me feel unwelcome. They canceled the appointment that I made because they "didn't do nail art" which is what I had requested online even though their website says in multiple places that they do nail art. Instead of trying to call me and ask if I was okay with just plain color, they cancelled my appointment in a confusing automated text message. When I was trying to explain what happened to my friends nail stylist, they called me out in front of the entire salon. They ended up being able to do my nails in between their clients but they handled the situation unprofessionally. read more

Let me start by saying, I'm combining the comments of the wedding party that had nails done here! The Good: 1. We found a place that could mostly accommodate the wedding party on short notice. 2. Decent facility. Modern, attractive, clean, bright. 3. Good results. Nails looked good, no 'painful' moments! The Not as Good: 1. Appointments required. Don't even try to walk in. As described by my wife, it took some pleading with the staff to get the appointments set. 2. Serial process. It took hours to get our three folks through the shop. Seems to be a bit of a staff shortage that meant neither of the bridesmaids got started until the bride was done! 3. Manager attitude. I gather that we were made to feel that we were being granted a favor to have nails done and to pay and tip them. 4. Inadequate ventilation. Nail stuff is stinky, but most shops seem to be able to exhaust lots of the smell. Not Tropical Nails - so prepare to be over-powered! First pedicure since January so it was definitely appreciated that they are limiting the number of customers, asking clients to wait in their cars, making masks mandatory because duh! and wiping down everything in between in addition to giving clients more wipes and hand sanitizer. Oh my, this business has gotten too big for their britches. I am not one to write reviews for anything but I can't not in this case. They have always been a little rude but today I witnessed a new level. Beware that when you schedule an appointment with someone, and wait for a few weeks, you might show up and they have changed you to someone else because they got a more lucrative appointment for that provider. Spent twice as long as usual because the polish needed to be redone. Got my legs scrubbed but she forgot to use moisturizer. The owner and front desk person were very rude and condescending. Nonexistent customer service and rude employees. My four year old wanted her toes polished and they charged me $15, the same as an adult pedicure to just basically do a polish change. When I questioned them about it, the nail tech just shrugged and said "We charge the same for kids to get a pedicure". Only problem is that it wasn't a pedicure. Did they soak her feet! NOPE. Did they cut her cuticles or shape her nails? NOPE again. Ridiculous. frankly, i found the experience to be very uncomfortable. i got the sense that my appointment was more of an annoyance and this is not how i expect to feel when i visit a spa. I left this appointment feeling mentally assaulted because i questioned the process being used for a gel fill. on my most recent visit: the receptionist never engaged me and checked me in - never uttered a word. the technician, also the owner, was quite frankly unpleasant. when i questioned how my nails were being attended to --- Tracey made me feel awkward when posing questions about the products and process used. the manicure has not held up. i recall that i got an email from this spa sometime over the winter where Tracey was excoriating a worker that left Tropical. I now get a sense as to why this worker may have left. Last year, i used this spa for full gel nails and fills and also had by brows done (ombre tatoo). I continued with the spa this summer expecting to be satisfied. not so much. you have lost a customer and i will not recommend this spa to anyone. read more

I've been getting weekly manicures for 25 years all over the world and can safely say that Tropical Nails was the worst experience I've ever had. I was visiting Camden with my mother for Mother's Day and wanted a nice side by side mani/pedi for a special treat. I booked ahead, but when we arrived I knew immediately this was not going to be the relaxing/pampering experience I wanted for us. To say that the level of customer service was abyssmal would be generous. We weren't greeted and had to find someone to help us. The Salon smelled overwhelmingly of chemicals and the two nail techs working were wearing masks. No one seemed to know what was going on despite the reservations we'd made for specific services a month prior. They eventually told us to pick out a color and then left us standing there. We knew what colors we wanted and told them, but they disappeared and we continued to stand there. I eventually went and hunted someone down, who appeared to be quite put out that we were bothering her. She asked my mother to show her hands as if to inspect them. We could not have been more offended. Despite all this, we were prepared to go ahead with our services, but as we were walking to the pedi chairs I noticed a sign saying that they didn't take credit cards on Sunday's. Apparently Monday-Saturday they take credit cards but cash only on Sunday. I had $200 in cash and asked them to tell me how much the services would be to determine if I needed to go to the ATM. They appeared flummoxed and were unable to calculate a total for me. Now, candidly, I can't imagine a legitimate business reason for not accepting credit cards only one day of the week, in addition to which, I have no idea why no one possessed the basic math abilities to total the cost for two mani/pedi's. It was at this point that my mother and I left. The combination of horrific customer service, dubious business practices, and the striking resemblance to a back alley chop shop were too much. In 25 years I have never walked out of an establishment. I also have never posted a negative review before. I worked retail for 20 years and am very cognizant of the fact that people mostly take the time to give feedback if they're dissatisfied, while very few will do the same for a good experience. As a matter of fact, I joined Yelp this evening specifically to share this feedback on Tropical Nails, but first posted several positive reviews of other places I'd visited. Tropical Nails appears to be one of the only nail salons in this area, so perhaps that's why they're able to stay in business. Do yourself a favor, and either get your nails done before visiting the area, or do more research than I did and find a place where they appreciate your business and understand the concept of customer service. read more
