This is 2023 and Narrative Space is now almost exclusively a barber shop (they don't sell boots and…read moreshirts anymore). I looked online for a hair-cutting place that did both men and women (I am a woman). I didn't want a fancy-looking salon. Narrative has a lovely, old-fashioned look and feel. Their web site said their prices were $40, $45, or $50.00. MUCH too expensive, but I realized I was paying for ambience. My barber was Michael Clark. (One got whoever was free when you arrived.) I showed him 2 sets of drawings of the cut I wanted (front and profiles, the difference between the 2 sets being where I wanted the main curve to be: a little higher or a little lower. To begin with the outcome: The drawings clearly showed that the hair should be even with my chin. It ended up, in fact, 2 inches too short...... just below my ears. The cutting experience was very weird. On 4 occasions, he grabbed the hair at the very top of my head and repeatedly pulled it up and down, as if he were washing something on a scrub board. I don't know what on earth that was about. The way he was separating strands and cutting was quite baffling to me. There seemed to be no organization to it. Unfortunately, I was unaware of how short it was getting. I was focusing on it covering my ears. At the end, it didn't even fall nicely and I had to do some repairs when I went home. Unfortunately it was too short to do all the repairs it needed. He had paid no attention to my drawings or instructions. I knew what the price was before I sat down in the chair. This is embarrassing. I paid $70.00 for this cut.

I had done research on local salons, and Narrative Space was at the top of my list. I really liked…read morethe fact that Chris Burnett had both clipper and scissor expertise. My research paid off. Chris did a great job on my hair - short and tight on the sides and textured on top. Great haircut and great shop - cool original barber chairs, warm, industrial Instagram worthy design and a fab shop pup to boot.

I've gotten raving reviews from my classmates about the place, so I decided to try it. So far I've been here 3 time. The first: between the antiques on the walls and engaging conversations they had with customers, I got a great vibe. When I was finally on the seat, things got a little quiet, perhaps because I was new. The cut was mediocre, but I'm not picky. The second: I gave them the benefit of a doubt and went back. Same exact experience. They asked me the same basic questions as though they had forgotten me altogether. No big deal, but the cut, once again, was mediocre at best. But again, they got the job done. The third and final: I am a very reasonable person but this is, without a doubt, the worst haircut I have ever gotten. The two sides were uneven. There was no attempt to fade the sides, resulting in a stairstepped line. Joe (the short one) left a small cut on my ear with a shaving blade. In the end, he left an absolute mess of trimmed hair on my face and neck, without wiping it off. I have enclosed pictures for review. The overall feeling was that they were unprofessional, unskilled, and unwelcoming to new comers. Short Joe was completely unresponsive when I asked "how are you?" Then he would proceed to take 15-second pauses at a time, as though reluctant to cut my hair. Worst of all, my seat was off center by about 20 degrees the entire time (I was directly facing the wall off to the side of the mirror). It would suffice to say that I will not be returning, and that those I know who are loyal customers will hear endlessly about this.

I was expecting more of a transition to him getting the cut and more distractions. We did arrive no later than 9:05 to his 9:00 appointment. He did get done right after one kid that was previously there and before the other who arrived before us. One of the kids in the salon was given ghosts as a distraction. Maybe his mother brought it with them, but I believe that was something the salon had. This particular kid had Autism or Downs. Either way, I was disappointed because my little guy started crying. Imagine going to a new place, immediately getting strapped down, and water misting on you. Again, I expected more of a conversation to get him adjusted, showing him around, etc. He may be 14mo, but he understands a lot more than people give him credit for. This very well may have been the worker we had for this appointment. Idk, it was our first time. Overall, his hair cut turned out well. Picture, meh, again the worker didn't do much to try and get him to smile so it's mediocre. We got our clump of hair, despite me asking for additional clumps since I have a lot of places for keep sakes (it's my first kid). Ultimately, will I be back? I don't know. If I do, I will definitely slow the worker down, and do more as a parent to get my son adjusted versus assuming that's something they do. Would I recommend this place as a first hair cut? If you use tech time with your kid, this may be a good spot for you. If not, I would go in with the assumption you'll need to do the leg work to get your LO comfy with this.
