Halal Street is located inside Detroit Shipping, a food hall with like 6 different concepts. I got the chicken/lamb combo platter, which came with rice and lettuce, and meat mixed with some onions and peppers, covered in a white sauce. I personally would have preferred it without the sauce because it was a lot, and I thought the iceberg lettuce was unnecessary. However, the chicken/lamb mix was very good! It came out fairly quickly as well.

A perfectly fine option to satisfy halal chicken and rice cravings when in Downtown Detroit. Halal Street is located in Detroit Shipping Company, a fun place to hang out, but it's going to cost you and the portion sizes aren't as large as other places outside of downtown. Halal Guys chicken and rice has been a favorite guilty pleasure of mine since I first had it in NYC ages ago, so I'm glad to see a few decent imitations popping up around metro Detroit. Halal Street has the flavors down pretty well, like the white and red sauces. I don't mind that the plate is drenched in sauce but the amount should probably be asked because some customers may want less (or more) than what is given. The portion size for the price - the Mix Platter is $13 - isn't the best deal you'll find in town. That is to be expected at Detroit Shipping Company, but there are other options where you get more bang for your buck. If you're a fan of Halal chicken and rice check out NYC Halal Eats in Troy and Farmington Hills, and Halal Desi Pizza & Gyros in Hamtramck.

I visited Halal Street on Sunday, 5/14/23, during lunchtime. I ordered the Chicken Rice Platter with Hot Sauce. The entire plate was light, refreshing, and delicious. I was full and satisfied after finishing it. The food came out pretty quickly, which I also appreciated.

I got the mixed chicken platter. I thought it was chicken only but it comes with gyro meat. I don't eat lamb. Found out well after having the carry out food dropped off to me at the bench. I see a lot of staff running around dropping off food orders to tables all over the shipping company, second and first floor too. It was $12 for about a half container of meat and lettuce and stuff. It's rather bland and lack luster.

I got the mixed platter- chicken and gyro. Both meats were well cooked and seasoned, not dry at all. The rice was very flavorful and well cooked too. I really enjoyed the sauces. I got extra red sauce on the side. It was much spicier than I expected but a flavorful spice (not just "hot"). They give a good amount of food. One of my favorite vendors at the Shipping Company.

It's not Halal Guys, but their mixed plate was awesome. We got the Lamb & Chicken Mixed Rice Platter - $12. The meat were juicy, flavorful and perfectly cooked. Definitely would recommend their dish for sure!

This is the best NY style chicken over rice platter I've found in Michigan yet!!! I fell in love with these when I was on the East Coast and I'm so happy to have some comfort food to turn to in Detroit. I recommend! Do yourself a favor and ask for extra sauce :)

Got it with the extra sauce this time and it was perfection. The only thing I can negative is that I wish I could order lunch from here! So damn good. This is maybe the best thing that's happened to Detroit in 2020. Maybe when the world goes back to normal you can get a cart downtown and do the full city experience

This is how we did contactless ordering

Disgusting food that felt like it gave me food poisoning and their employees were rude as all hell. I'd avoid this place.

Service from start to finish was pretty good. We had gotten there shortly after they opened so it took some time to order but honestly I didn't mind because we had quite a bit of time before the concert. We were sat in the bar area that had a few table tops, couches, and seats at the bar. This place is a great place for a date and a fun night out with friends. We ordered a few small dishes that felt like a party in our mouth! We started out with the tornado potato that was dressed with Sriracha mayo, pickled ginger, and bonito. If you've ever had Japanese style savory pancake- okonomiyaki, you'll definitely be a fan of this. We also ordered the miso caesar salad, which was absolutely delicious! You could really taste every ingredient in every bite. I just wish they went lighter on the dressing. Still pretty good, I just prefer less dressing on my salads. Also ordered the lobster bao bun that came with popcorn- yes, popcorn! This was definitely unique. For the main meal, we ordered the waygu stirk steak that came with potatoes and mushrooms that was finished off with zip sauce. Absolutely delicious, just a tad on the salty side. We ended the meal off with the taro soft serve with popping boba. Even though it was cold, we were so happy to end the night with this dessert. And the serving size was pretty big.

Unfortunately, they messed up 3 of our orders. They brought my friend the wrong drink, they brought out a wrong order, and they neglected to bring my friend a different drink order. The food itself was all too salty and largely disappointing. We got the dumplings, skirt steak, two different buns, and two different skewers. Our favorite was the mushroom skewer, which was really tasty and well seasoned. Everything else I would not order again. The vibes were all great, but the food was super disappointing. The service also was super slow at the end and it took forever to get our bill. I do not plan to try again.

The restaurant is easy to miss, located on a main road. They do have a small free parking lot. The interior is small, intimate, casual, and unpretentious. At my second visit (my first was several years ago when it first opened) my friend and I came late in the afternoon on a Friday. I'm not sure if we came at a slow time (we were initially the first customers there) or that the Chef was training a new service, but we received VIP treatment. I've occasionally had chefs check in, I've never had service from the chef before! He discussed the menu, as well as his intention for the restaurant. I love Moroccan tea, and the tea service they provide is just lovely. He is certified in tea, and incredibly knowledgeable. My friend and I started with the mudammas fava bean dip, served with pita chips. This was so fantastic I would return just for it. Creamy, just the right balance of flavor, topped with fresh veggies to add texture, I cannot say enough good things. I had the lamb tagine, and she had the kafta meatball batbout. The meatball is listed as a sandwich, it is in house made flatbread. Both dishes were amazing, so fresh and flavorful. The lamb shank was fall off the bone, the couscous was loaded with fresh vegetables. I ended up stopping in for lunch again by myself. I had the harissa potatoes and the flava bean soup, and a slice of pie that was a special. Everything again was fantastic, but it's the potatoes that you will crave after having once. Crispy and brightly flavored, soft once you bit in. I was able to try one of the Chef's teas, and hear a bit more about the restaurant. While the bread for the meatball batbout is made in house, the bread for the fish and chicken sandwiches he obtains locally. I like how engaged he, and the restaurant as a result, is with the community. Chef Omar treats all of his customers as welcomed friends. A quick note that the restaurant does not have any alcohol. They offer alcohol free wine and other beverages. Be aware of this, but do not let it deter you!

Even better, Star is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which has become a rare and precious thing now that COVID has flung our dining options back by 25 years. I stopped by with two friends late on a Saturday night after celebrating's a friend's birthday down the street in Hamtramck. Star's parking lot was brightly lit and is near a high-traffic intersection (Conant & Davison), and the lobby/dining room inside is also brightly lit even late at night. They have a big and diverse menu, even compared to most other coneys. You'll find most of the expected standards here -- breakfast plates, omelettes, and sandwiches; burgers and hot sandwiches; coney dogs; fried appetizers. But there's also quite a few dishes not found at other coneys: chicken wings; burgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches made with naga pepper sauce; chicken tikka sandwiches; but perhaps best of them all are five different kinds of egg rolls, which are large and well-stuffed. I had loaded hashbrowns, chicken tikka egg rolls, and a naga dog. My tablemates had Philly steak egg rolls, a burger, and a breakfast sandwich. We were all happy with everything we got, and I'll gladly go back again even when it's not a post-bar stop. Glad to have you in the neighborhood, Star!
